Mockingbird Place #2

The Cowboy in Unit E

Rate this book
The good news is the most gorgeous cowboy I've ever seen is moving in next door to me. The bad news? He's not alone. Hanging on his arm is a very pregnant woman. Are they a couple? It sure looks like they are. So not only is he not gay, but he also has a girlfriend, or a wife, or whatever. Just my luck.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

I enjoyed this story. Trace has spent years trying to heal from some abuse he suffered as a child, only his paintings have helped his pain. Luke has put his life on hold and suffered in silence since his brother’s death, once he realizes he can still live his life he may have damaged his bridges too much

Both of these characters were wonderful, they are both broken but can see that things will get better. I could see both of their emotions and how they were able to deal with their pasts and help healing each other. Their love is strong enough to heal the other and to form a family with the others at Mockingbird Place. Seeing the unwavering love all the characters have for each other was wonderful.

The cover art is nice and follows the pattern for the series.

On par with book one. I can see a pattern of abuse followed up with a healthy dose of angst! Still worth reading though!

I have lost count of what gay cowboy romance number I am on in this marathon. It is almost done.

I worried that I would be unable to understand this one, since it was the second in a series. It can stand alone, but it will be annoying at times if you do that. There is a ton of rehashing what happened in book one and even a wedding scene from the couple in book one. There is a lot of info dumping and I just couldn’t care less.

This book has explicit sexual assault/rape of a child. The reveal of this happens right before the characters hook-up for the first time which is a huge hell no for me. That is not the time to get sexy. The character is experiencing PTSD and has a lot of anxiety around sex. So sex is not appropriate. Don’t even get me started on the “I have never told this to anyone before” and then proceeds to tell everyone within hours. No. That is just so unrealistic and gross. The mental health issues don’t just go away because you fell in love. Stop.

Speaking of bad sex. There is little to no prep for a character that has never bottomed before to magically take everything at once. There was no condom use for oral sex. I am just disappointed in so much when it comes to this book, that my issues with the bad sex is so minor.

The romance was so boring. They meet and are throwing major drama almost immediately. There are so many issues in the romance. Moving in and getting engaged in a matter of weeks? No. Red flag. Stop.

The weird maybe romance with the roommate that may or may not have happened? Weird. The casual abelism? Also weird. Just overall a really bad book. The writing was terrible. None of the characters stood out. There was nothing that was worth it for this one. I hate to say that, but I read the whole thing and it is one of those books that I regret reading.

Blank Canvas...

Kris Cook has the uncanny ability to bring two men with emotionally troubled pasts and bring them together to form a passionate love story. Trace was abused as a young boy that brought him to a place in his life where it took all of his strength just to exist every day. The only therapy that helped him cope was through his talent for drawing. That seemed enough as he came to terms that he would never have a chance to love.. Then he saw Luke, a gorgeous cowboy that had just moved into Mockingbird Place. But Luke was soon deflated when he saw Luke with a pregnant woman. His hopes immediately shattered into a million pieces.

Luke himself has a devastating past with the loss of his twin brother. His one goal now was to focus on taking care of his brother's wife and soon to be born baby. He experiences for the first time an attraction for another man, but resists because of his obligation to his lost brother. We experience all the pitfalls encountered along the way as Trace and Luke try to build a lasting relationship, but also their genuine feelings for each other as they discover their love for one another.

Trace & Luke end up hitting it off, but there’s a bit of a misunderstanding in how Ava is involved with Luke, who is, in fact, her brother in law, not her husband. After this, there are some misunderstandings & dealings with past problems, but eventually things get sorted out. The place where they live seems to be a bit of a utopia, & things progress at a strange rate (example, the main characters fall for each other without really having had a single conversation, & Ava gives her child the middle name of Trace just a couple of weeks after meeting him, which seems highly unrealistic).

Rough beginning, but good once it got going

I found the fact that Luke and Trace knowing and loving one another’s personality without actually having any personal interactions to be particularly impressive, though not very realistic. Once they actually got together, I liked this pairing - especially when Luke helped Trace realize the hope he hadn’t recognized that was always in his life.

Trace has been painting through his pain but then burying it not really dealing. Luke is suffering from the loss of his twin. But as these men get to know each other they start to find healing. Together with Luke's sister in law and nephew they begin to build family. This story is uplifting and hopeful.

What I love is how each book shows how these men get to Mockingbird Place and how they come through so much. It’s all due to the strong bonds they have. The kind of community we all would love to live in.

Healing

This is a wonderful love story but it's also a story of healing. Both with the kids of innocence and a loss of a sibling & husband. But the residents of Mockingbird Place are a family.

Judging a Book by it's Cover: Another busy, colorful cover. Skyline at dusk or dawn shown below two fully-clothed men arranged on opposite sides above. Synopsis is interesting, yet vague enough to need more. I'm not a fan of this series' covers, but thankfully I'm willing to NOT judge a book by it's cover.

Looking Deeper:
Trigger Warning: Scenes of past Child Molestation / Sexual Abuse of a Minor revisited as flashbacks and retellings: Not graphic, but enough to make you fully aware of what happened with no lingering doubt.
First-person POV from alternating perspectives.
Trace is attracted to the cowboy who just moved next door with a very pregnant woman at his side. He's not a home wrecker, so he tries to bury his feelings for Luke, up until Luke kisses him one morning. Luke's an outstanding, selfless man... he was willing to quit his job on the ranch and take time off from the rodeo circuit to see Ava through school, her pregnancy and the upcoming baby. Loyalty and Honor is tested when Attraction and Emotion tempts and tries even the most stubborn of men. Miscommunications and a hellava lot of baggage on all ends are brought to the table in this one. Both lead men are likeable in their quirks, attributes and flaws. Their chemistry is magnetic. We've met several of the secondary characters in "The Marine in Unit A", but there are a few new characters in play. Dialogue and interaction are very good and feel natural. The plot is very good and the flow is smooth and fluid. There were some conflicts, but they were quickly resolved - sometimes almost too quickly. Predictability was rather low, only one key point was predicted, but it did not really detract from the story. The conclusion is solid for out main characters and provides an exciting glimpse into the third book the series and I cannot friggin' wait for it!!! I love the residents of Mockingbird Place & the newest resident's got me scratching my head, but I imagine his story will eventually unfold for us. I'm hoping Tony gets a story soon, too! Yes, I recommend the series. Smokin' hot and smart men who are not afraid to expose their feelings or get in touch with their emotional side. Well done, again, Mr. Cook! I look forward to the next book - impatiently!

The Cowboy In Unit E-Book 2 in The Mockingbird Place by Kris Cook!!!

21-year-old Trace is a very talented artist but he never lets anyone see his artwork. A hot cowboy named Luke moves into Mockingbird Place but Trace is not thrilled as he's not alone but with a pregnant girl. Now Trace feels he must let go of any attraction to the cowboy as he's obviously taken. Luke's friend Ava collapses and Trace comes to her rescue and soon finds out that things are not what he originally thought. Now that he knows the truth, Trace wonders if it's too late for something special with the cowboy?

Trace can't believe his luck as Luke is what he's always wanted as this cowboy is the first person to bring light into his dark life but he's afraid what Ava is to Luke. Luke is such a great guy the way he is ready to give up so much to make sure Ava has her baby without any drama. The real story was Trace dealing with his hurtful past and Luke trying to help Trace and show him the real meaning of love.

This novel has some dark moments but the author doesn't dwell on them or go into much detail as he just lets us know what these characters have dealt with in the past with flashbacks. I loved that Kris Cook brought back some secondary characters, some of the men from book one-The Marine in Unit A plus some new characters so that was some great reading. I give a lot of credit to Kris Cook for developing such complicated and damaged but loving characters such as Trace and Luke. The author quickly resolved the drama issues that arose with these men especially Trace. This was a beautifully written novel and I recommend it to everyone!!!

Trace is an art major at college which causes some problems since he has high anxiety about anyone seeing his paintings. Cowboy Luke just moved into Mockingbird Place with a very pregnant Ava. When Luke hits on Trace, sparks fly but Trace isn’t about to start something with someone already in a relationship. With all kinds of obstacles, will Trace find love and be able to share his talent?

“He knows me better than anyone. It’s hard for me when my emotions are so strong. I feel exposed.

‘Come on, Trace. Let me in. Please.’

I take a deep breath. ‘Fine. The asshole kissed me.’

‘What asshole? Luke?’

‘Yes, Luke. Can you believe it? The minute Ava is out of sight he starts flirting with me.’ I recount everything that happened. ‘So you see why I’m livid.’”

In Mocking Bird Place Book 2, we encounter more people having a rough time. Luke and Ava have just been through a tragedy and are still recovering. Luke also went through a very traumatic experience. I was touched at how the three of them worked together to help each other heal. We also continue to see how strong of a family unit the residents at Mockingbird Place are. This series is very sweet, and I love the interactions between the neighbors. I always get a lot of warm and fuzzy feels when I read this series.

If you also enjoy M/M, check out this cowboy’s love story and find out what’s going on with the quirky residents at Mockingbird Place. I know I’ll continue checking in with them and reading about what Jackson is up to in the next book.

This may be book 2 in the Mockingbird series, but they can each be read as a standalone. Each book focuses on a different set of characters. We do see a continuing story of some secondary characters, but you will not be lost reading about it. Trust me, if you doubt me, than read the full Mockingbird series cause you will not be disappointed.
Trace's breath is knocked out when he sees, Luke, but the kicker is that he is moving into Mockingbird with a girl. Who is very pregnant I might add! Ok, so just Trace's luck he finds the man of his dreams and he is not gay and with a girl. Just his luck yeah? Wouldn't you like to know what transpires. We learned about Luke and Ava in book 1 and while we didn't know their story, we learn it in here.
The author has once again wrote an awesome story and as the details unfold we are left with our mouth hanging open when we learn of the truth behind Luke and Ava. While heartbreaking how it unfolds and what becomes of this story is so heartwarming and much needed for Ava and Luke.
Trace is dealing with some issues just as Luke was when their friendship began. After much set backs they each were able to heal each others tragic stories.
We got to see a double celebration as well. What you say? Not saying, but I will say that it was awesome to see all the secondary characters that live in Mockingbird together to experience both of these celebrations. Love Jackson and I can't wait to get my hands on his story! The fire extinguisher may not be able to handle this story.

4 out of 5 stars

This is the 2nd book in the series and I read them back to back. The first book was good, but I had a hard time really loving it. This book was so much more better for me. The emotions were stronger. The relationships with the characters seemed deeper. The secondary characters felt more like people I would want to know.

I also liked that the relationship didn’t take as long to develop in this book. It was still 50% through the book before we really had any dates, but they connected faster and deeper than the men in the first book.

This book wasn’t perfect for me though. I still felt like the character’s self doubt is almost too much. Sometimes I feel like authors put too much weight in their characters doubts and then the story gets weighed down with too much drama. I did enjoy that Luke was able to help Trace overcome his doubts and the times when they were working through things were some of my favorite scenes.

Like in chapter 15. I don’t want to give much away, but this chapter really helped me bond with Luke...I felt like after the chapter, he was really a good guy for Trace and their bond seemed to really solidify for me. Then there are the the emotions in a scene with some of Trace’s old friends. This scene really got to me. Like I got goosebumps and everything.

Overall, this author is improving and his work is something I will likely continue to follow.

M/M Romance
Trigger: Pedophilia, rape, death
I was given this book for an honest review by Inked Rainbow Reads.

This story began so sweetly. You had Luke and Ava, the new tenants and then an entire community of people who were all there for each other. Jackson and Trace have been roommates for a long time and while their relationship is not romantic, they love each other like brothers.

Despite some miscommunication at the beginning that causes some angst in the story, the real dilemma and story was between Trace and his struggles - his past and with Luke, trying to figure out where to go from where he is now.

The attraction that Luke and Trace feel is very strong. Cook does a good job describing their initial reactions. And, while Trace is trying to figure out a way in to Luke's heart, Trace has to confront his own demons from the past.

I really liked how Cook was able to resolve those issues and how Luke was the one to show Trace that his past did not have to define his future. I did find it somewhat difficult to figure out whether or not this was a very fast timeline or short one. At any rate, I felt that the romance part was very "insta" and that's not my favorite.

Despite that, I enjoyed the story and can't wait for Jackson's story!!!

Here in the second book of the Mockingbird Place series, we get the story of Trace and Luke. It's a pretty quick read just like the first book from the series, and we get the quirky returning cast of characters that I enjoyed the first time around, plus we get to learn more about our two main characters.

The story starts off with a misunderstanding between Trace and Luke which is resolved pretty quickly, but then another bit of drama is introduced to keep the tension up. This is also addressed rather easily, and it is followed by one of the two central plot points (Ava giving birth) that help bring Trace and Luke together. The other central point is much more emotional and could possibly be a trigger for some reading (child molestation), but is handled with care and serves as another means to cement the relationship being forged between Trace and Luke.

I did feel like this story did not flow quite as smoothly as the first book of the series did, and Trace and Luke's relationship seemed to move pretty fast, but we do get to see character growth (primarily with Trace), and we also get a quick glimpse toward the next couple from the series (can't wait for Jackson and Eli's story!).

The Cowboy in Unit E was a 3.5-star read for me, and it does still have my interest piqued for the rest of the series. Recommended for 18+ for the adult M/M sexual content.

The Cowboy in Unit E is Book 2 of the Mockingbird Place series by Kris Cook.
Mockingbird Place is a 10-unit Mediterranean complex that is filled with stories from each unit. Luke Wagner is the cowboy who has moved in with a very pregnant woman. Trace Cotton is an artist who never shows his paintings and lives in Unit I.
Trace must hide his attraction to the cowboy. But it gets harder as fate seems to keep him and Luke dealing with unexpected events. Trace can not believe he has to stay away from Luke when “He’s the One who brought light into my shadowy existence.” But things are not as they seem, in some ways they are far worst for both Trace and Luke.
Kris Cook’s development of the earlier lives of Trace, Luke and other secondary characters is what keeps you reading. The other residents at Mockingbird Place are involved in each others lives and Kris Cook makes you glad you visited again to see what is happening. Unit E may be the focus of this story but we still get aspects of the other Unit’s lives. The twist and issues that are dealt with in this story will keep you happy to be at Mockingbird Place again. I was given this story. Give The Cowboy in Unit E a try; I am glad I got to visit again. I am ready for the Fireman’s story.

Thanks Kris Cook & Good Writing

Ahh…. Cowboys….
This is the second book in the series and it felt good to revisit this close-knit group of friends. While you could read it as a standalone starting with the first story will give you the background to people and situations that are referenced in this instalment. Anytime there is a cowboy mentioned I admit I’m the first in line. While Luke is definitely a rodeo cowboy he is on hiatus as he focuses on his family as they all recover from a terrible loss.
Trace is immediately attracted to the new resident of Mockingbird Place though confusion and misunderstanding mar their first meetings. Once that is sorted out the real problems emerge and can be tackled. I love how caring Luke is towards Ava and how they both are immediately folded into the complex resident’s family. As Trace helps Luke and Ava, he in turn is helped even more to recover from past trauma that he never recovered from. The romance is hot and sweet, albeit a bit quick, but I couldn’t help but feel for the pain both Luke and Trace were going through.
While still missing that emotional kick that would only make this story better, this is another solid addition to the series.

I think this story was better than the first in the series. I guess with each book Kris Cook just gets better. He writes great stories with complex characters who have real emotions. His characters have dark pasts and so much love to give. They just need encouragement from friends and hope to overcome those hurtful obstacles.

Trace and Luke have some troubling pasts, always having to protect themselves but together they have the potential of hope, love and a future. Kris doesn’t dwell on the past but brings it to light to give us a look at what Trace and Luke need to overcome.

This book is sweet, funny with a mix of angst and drama for an engaging story to keep you invested in this series. You’ll want to know what the characters are up to and who they’re falling in love with.

Mockingbird Place is not just a home but a family unit. I love the characters that Kris has brought to life at this complex. The unity and family feeling is one I wish I was a part of. This was a great follow up in the series and I look forward to more from Mockingbird Place.

This story in the series deals with Luke and Ava who move into Unit E of Mockingbird Place. It also includes Trace and Jackson from next door. There are some seriously messed up vibes between Trace and Luke at the beginning, about Luke's relationship with Ava. Especially after Trace sees the photographs in the hallway. Can they get past that? The Marine in Unit A and Oliver get married, and right after they're married, Ava goes into labor. What happens with that? What happens when Luke and Trace are out one evening enjoying a meal and a football mate of Trace's from when he was 13 walks in? What does Luke do for Trace and the others? I'm not going to say too much more about this, but if you have not read the Marine in Unit A, read that one first, then read this one so it all makes more sense! Just be prepared for one hell of a cliff hanger at the end of this one. I cannot wait for the third book to come out in 2016 now!

Another good read by Kris Cook.

Like book one, this book is written as a single pov until you get to the next to last chapter which is with Luke's pov vs. Trace. This book would have greatly benefited from multi pov. There were so many spots where I wanted to know what Luke was thinking and feel it would have added greatly to the story.

The story concept itself was really good. I enjoyed the read and finished it in only a few hours. I felt a little closer to these characters and felt more engaged with them. The dialogue seemed a bit rushed in some areas, and the descriptions to details at times seemed to flow pretty steady for the most part. There were a few minor misses, but all in all, pretty good.

Even though this is book 2 of the series, it can be read as a stand alone. This does have a HEA.

All in all, a good read.

Would I recommend this book? Yes

Would I read more from this author? Yes. Can't wait to get book 3 next. Want Jackson and Eli's story.

Out off all five books, I think this one may have been my favorite. I felt like it was the most developed out of all the books.

Oliver has moved on, and moved out of Unit J to move into Unit A with his lover Adam. Mockingbird Place welcomes it's newest residence, Luke and Ava. Trent is instantly hit with a case of lust after the striking cowboy. Except there is one problem, he's straight and has a pregnant lover living with him.

Trent settles for just friends with the hunky cowboy and takes Ava into his circle.

When Luke lays one on him, Trent is instantly pissed and thinks they've both betrayed Ava. Until the truth comes out and Luke confirms, Ava is not his. Luke's nobleness keeps him from getting involved with Trent, even though they both want it. Instead he has this idea that he's going to save Ava and give her what she needs for herself and the baby.

( 4 stars)

This is the second book in the Mockingbird Place series, I would suggest reading book one, as there are returning characters. So, this story did deal with some issues that may cause triggers, just FYI.

Luke and Ava are the new people moving in Mockingbird Place, Ava is... well very pregnant. Trace, seeing the two together, obviously puts 2 and 2 together and makes.... well not the right assumption.

Once these assumptions are dealt with, other issues seem to arise. I loved how Luke helps Trace with the issues he had to deal with and in facing his ghost. There is sooo much I could say about this story but I don't want to leave spoilers. I will say there was some drama, some hot guys, and some serious sexy time. I give this 4 stars, and am soo looking forward to book three!

So this installment in this series was about Trace and the cowboy next door, Luke. Basically, as with the first one, this story....at least to me....moved at warp speed.

Luke and his very pregnant sister in law move in next door to Trace and Jackson. Trace is attracted to Luke, but he has no idea if he is straight, married or what. Luke is attracted to Trace however, he feels a sense of obligation towards Ava, since she is carrying his brother's child. After a misunderstanding, some interference from some well meaning neighbors, Trace and Luke finally get together. All in all, a pretty simple tale of young love that ends with an HEA. I was left hoping that the series would pick up after the first one, and at this point, I am still left hoping this will happen. Because this story, was more of the same.

I was given this book by Inked Rainbow Reads for an honest review.

This is the second book in the series Mockingbird Place. Just like book 1 this was a very sweet story. Luke and Trace find themselves attracted to each other when they meet. But due to a misunderstanding they don't hook up right away.

The book had a very nice story to it with Luke's sister-in-law involved in what happens between Luke and Trace. I loved how Luke drew Trace's unpleasant past out of him and turned it all around for him. As a couple Trace and Luke were a very cute together.

A very nicely written story. Looking forward to reading about Jackson and the Eli next.

Trace is floating through his life studying and painting until his new neighbour, Luke, awakens something in him. Confusion over Luke's relationship with Ava stops Trace from pursuing him. Trace's own past is another reason to be cautious. With Luke giving up his career as a rodeo rider after the death of his twin brother, this should have been an intense read.

It was an ok read but it didn't wow me. The characters and their stories had so much potential that I feel as though we only scratched the service with their issues. I did enjoy their story and baby Mick brought them closer together. The ending gave an interesting peek as to what and who is to come next in this series.
