Harlots, hoodlums, and heathens in Brassaï's Paris   "Brassaï is a living eye," wrote Henry Miller of the Hungarian–born artist who adopted Paris after World War I and became one of its most celebrated photographers. Originally a painter before he moved on to writing, sculpture, cinema and, most famously, photography, Brassaï (1899-1984) was a member of Paris’s cultural elite, counting Miller, Picasso, Sartre, Camus, and Cocteau, among his friends. Camera in hand, he scoured the streets and bars of Paris, unabashedly capturing the city’s inhabitants in their natural habitats. Prostitutes, hoodlums, and other ‘marginal’ characters were the most famous heroes of Brassaï’s moody, gritty photographs taken often by night. Including an extensive selection of Brassaï’s finest photographs and an essay describing his life and work, this book explores the world of Brassaï in thematic Minotaure magazine, Paris at Night, Secret Paris, Day Visions, Artists of My Life, and Graffiti and Transmutations.

Hij kan zo ontzettend goed kijken. Hij weet echt de kern van iets of iemand vast te leggen.
De lichtval in zijn werk, de stad, zijn mensen en het tijdperk blijven me fascineren.

'My images were surreal simply in the sense that my vision brought out the fantastic dimension of reality. My only aim was to express reality, for there is nothing more surreal than reality itself. If reality fails to fill us with wonder, it is because we have fallen into the habit of seeing it as ordinary.'

Ellentétben a zseb-Brassaïval, amit Ribeyrolles szerkesztett, ez már egy bátran s boldogan ajánlható verzió. Album, szépséges. Van benne rövid, háromnyelvű bevezető, a kötet fejezetekre van osztva. Nagy előnye az, hogy nincs benne hiba, a már említett Brassaï-kötettel ellentétben az A man dies in the street, Boulevard de la Glaciére, 1932 sorozata helyesen van szerkesztve. Nagy hátránya, hogy nincs benne a világ legjobb fotója, a Les escaliers du Montmartre, viszont van benne egy, számomra ismeretlen fotó ugyanarról a Montmartre-i lépcsőről, csak más szögből, más oldalról, más napszakban és emberekkel fényképezve. Találtam benne új kedvencet is, a Wall of the Santé Prison címűt, éjszakai felvétel, gyönyörű. Nagyon szeretem Brassaït, ahogy játszott fénnyel és árnyékkal, az éjszakai fotóit, a párizsiakat legfőképpen, mert úgy tudott fényképezni, hogy az ember szívesen és azonnal elhiszi neki, még minden ugyanúgy van, ahogy ő ezelőtt 80-90 évvel azt leképezte. Élnek a képei, mielőtt félreérthető lennék, számomra illatuk van és fúj bennük a szél, és ropog a hó a Luxembourg-kertben vagy csordogál az eső, nedvesen csillognak a utcakövek és ott duzzad a tavasz a montmarte-i lépcső fáinak rügyeiben, kora reggel, a Santé-börtön faláról pedig óhatatlanul Van Gogh jut az ember eszébe. Gyönyörű. Soha nem jártam még Párizsban, de azt a régit ismerem, egyre jobban, hiszen a fényképeihez mások is csatlakoznak, könyvek, írók, festmények, más fotósok, komplex és elbűvölő világ.

Great collection of Brassai's photographs. This multitalent, he was writer, artist, photographer and much more, made great pictures. The pictures of Paris by night and the portraits he made are my favorites!

Great book for an introduction to Brassais' work. He really took great pictures and indeed his work was a long reportage on human life. My favorite sections were definately "Paris by Night" and "Artists of My Life".

A great collection of Brassai's photographs and personal view of Paris. It takes you back to another era, and it is most exciting seeing portraits of all those great artists living in Paris at the time. Highly recommended, both for the photography and the historical significance.
