Her Heart's Captain

Rate this book
Jenny was in love, certainly and forever. And Tris was in love with her, with a frank, open admiration which had swept her off her feet. With her, he was perfect: kind, considerate and passionate. But who would she be marrying? Her beloved Tris-or the ruthless Captain Tristram Allenby who ruled his ship with a chilling brutality that frightened and repelled her...

How could she be sure? And who could help her? Not her mother, surely, who saw only the Captain's fortune and family. And not the beautiful Andrea Clement, who had plans of her own for Tris's matrimonial future...

Well... At least some of the characters recognized emotional and mental abuse for what it was?

I reread this book recently and still loved it. It was as good as ever and hard to put down even knowing the outcome. Elizabeth Mansfield has a writing style that I absolutely love, and her books are full of rich, wonderful characters. This book was no exception. The only issue I have with her books is the amount of swear words. Without the swear words it would be perfect.

Content: clean - a dozen swear words, mention of light skirts.

Didn’t find it particularly romantic and the heroine is a little on the insipid side.

frustratingly (how spoiled the brother is, how doting to the point of non-sensical both jenny and her mother are), but cute.

One of my mom’s favorites but I found it a little too simplistic. Sea captain meets meek sister of young midshipman. Nobody sees what a wonderful person she is except for the captain. Girl dismisses captain’s attentions thinking he’s cruel to her brother. Turns out the boy exaggerated and it was all a big misunderstanding.

A sweet tale, even if the heroine was rather insipid. Jenny Garvin is a naive doormat for most of the book, only waking up at the very end when love goes wrong. If I think Tristram Allenby has chosen the wrong woman, well, I'm sure she'll improve with marriage, & plenty of exposure to his delightful mother, Lady Dulcie Rowcliffe, a woman of intelligence, humour & good sense.

This was sweet, actually! I didn't expect to like it. She started off so sheltered and naive and a pushover and oblivious to how her mom and brother looked down on her, but glad to see the character development.

Wonderful story

Poor Jenny, saddled with an awful mother and brother, held herself together anyway. I had to admire her and was happy to share in her triumph. Well-written and well-told.

Re-read from a long time ago. It was an interesting read but of course not as good as Georgette Heyer.

This is the kind of Regency that keeps me reading Regency. A great story with great dialogue , fantastic characters, and a believable plot.

Not her best, the plot is fueled by misunderstandings, but all the same I liked the characters and understood web they misunderstood. and as the book covers maybe 7 months, most of it in 1 month it wasn't too bad. ;)
