The vampire that rebooted the genre is back with a second helping of supernatural snark, and this time he has even more truth to tell about the challenges faced by a paranormal dude just trying to have a normal life. So...yeah. It's me again. America's most sarcastic vampire. I'm back on the blog. It's been a while - about a year, if we need to get into specifics. Which I usually do. It's just a thing with me. A lot has happened since we last chatted - some good, some bad. All worthwhile, in the grand scheme. I've dealt with the whole Living Dead thing long enough now to know how to keep it from taking over my life. What I'm still figuring out is how to keep it from wreaking havoc on everyone else's lives. It's a roller coaster, for sure, but I'm convinced that waiting for me somewhere on the other side of the Other Side is a real-life life, not just some artificially-sweetened half-life substitute. I want a family. I want my music. I want the dream come true, not the dream fell through. And I'm determined to have it, regardless of how eternal this afterlife thing might be. But it's a hell of a lot to keep track of. Barring any unforeseen developments that might undo all my vampirosity, I may have to grow up a little in order to get it all to work out. I'm ready for that, though. As fun as it might seem to hang with the Lost Boys, I can't be Peter Pan-pire forever. What readers are "...if you liked Joe Vampire, you'll love The Afterlife. It's everything you loved about the first book made better." "I really enjoyed reading the first Joe Vampire book, but this second installment was an order of magnitude even more fun to read. It was just the perfect combination of sharp humor, unexpected allusions, and zany metaphors." "...wait until you read what happens to Hube. My heart was racing, and I could not stop reading until I knew every last detail."
Steven Luna likes making things up on a daily basis. This biography, though factual, is one of those things. He's the author of the absurdly humorous Joe Vampire series for grown-ups, the heart-wrenchingly serious Songs from the Phenomenal Nothing for almost-grown-ups, and the magical realism tale Starfire and the Miracle Tree for readers of all ages. Simeon Croom and the Treasure Star, his new comedy-adventure series, is now available.
Joe Vampire is at it again. He's making music, keeping to a strict non-human diet and writing his blog. But in between trying to make his girlfriend happy, keep his vampire life in order and make it big as a musician with his BFF Hube, his life is about to take a turn for the dark.
In the first book, we follow Joe's journey as he changes from Joe Schmoe to Joe Vampire. Although his initiation into the world of vampires is far from easy, in book two we find Joe has begun to adapt, if not quite embrace his new lifestyle. But he has the support of Chloe, the girl he had the hots for in book one, his vampire "godmother" Louise, and Hube, the most loyal friend ever.
Everything seems to be getting even better until Joe and Hube run into some trouble that really heats up the storyline. And if anyone's wondering, Joe is as sarcastic as ever, while being endearing when he's not focused on describing the particular foulness of a vampire's bathroom habits. He may swear like a sailor, as the old adage goes, but Joe is also full of insight, compassion and soul.
If you're interested in reading the second installment of Joe Vampire, I strongly suggest you get to know Joe by reading the first book. His growth is evident between the two books and you'll catch all the initial laughs. Author Steve Luna again has offered a refreshing, and non-glitzy tale about the life of a vampire. Joe is just as human as the rest of us, aside from being immortal, his penchant for blood and teeth he has to saw down every day. Although some of the issues he runs into are decidedly supernatural, he also deals with day-to-day struggles, making for a very real and well-rounded character. Meanwhile, I continue to love how the book's blog format makes it this really relevant vampire story, as oddly as that may sound.
I can't tell you how it all turns out, but I will say there are several twists and turns that will keep you interested until the last page is turned.
Okay, this started slow. I was wondering what did I see in the first book that made me want to get the next 2 - then the book went into full-on roller coaster mode - tick-tick-tick up that steep incline and then over the top into an emotional ride that left me wrung out. Written as a blog posted by an every-day kind of guy who was turned into a vampire, this book takes you into what happens as Joe settles down into what he hopes will be a routine, well-integrated human/vampire life; and then all hell breaks loose. I found myself totally invested in Joe and his world. And looking forward to reading book #3.
So Joe’s back and the book’s tagline of “Even if you live forever, you’ll have to grow up sometime” is very appropriate to this story. While the first book was coming to terms with being a vampire, The Afterlife asks, “What now?”
Without giving away any major plot points. We learn about how Joe’s relationship with Chloe has played out. We learn how Joe and Hube’s music aspirations are progressing. And Joe’s still punching buttons at work with his Vampire Godmother.
The worst thing you could do is discount this book as a “vampire story.” It could just as well be a coming of age story. If you can believe it there is an awful lot of “real life” in this fiction. It’s hard to say too much without giving any major plot points away but let’s just say that Joe wants what most folks his age want. And Chloe wants what most folks her age want. I’ll let Mr. Luna tell you whether or not those wants will bring those two together or move them opposite directions.
When I reviewed the first Joe Vampire book I was a little critical of the blog format saying that the book suffered from the same problems a regular blog does; I can only take so much me, me, me before I need to walk away and revisit later. Too much of a good thing, I concluded, was still too much. However, this time around Mr. Luna found a way to fix whatever it was that pushed me away after a couple of “posts”. I absolutely tore through The Afterlife after I had a moment to really sit down and get into it.
For a vampire with no beating heart, Joe sure has a big one. Heart that is. Not the other thing. Again, as with Joe Vampire, I found myself believing that there could be vampires because Joe is just so believable. It was nice to catch up with the dude vampire again. Sarcasm and profanity is back, but there is so much more to Joe than that.
I’m not sure if it’s worth a mention or not but there is one whole post, and a long one at that, that is basically an advertisement for Mr. Luna’s publisher Booktrope. The story slams on the breaks while Joe interviews various other authors in the group’s author list. While the post is humorous, and well written, and I’m sure incredibly flattering for the authors mentioned, it did make me feel as if I was being advertised to. It just seemed as if that particular post was tacked on.
And since I don’t like ending things on a negative note, I do want to point out one very cool feature of this ebook and that is… easter eggs. Well, they aren’t necessarily hidden but there are a couple of links in the books that link to sites owned by Mr. Luna with exclusive Joe content that, as far as I know, isn’t available elsewhere. I won’t spoil that content, but be sure you check out those links.
In closing, if you liked Joe Vampire, you’ll love The Afterlife. It’s everything you loved about the first book made better. Mr. Luna has taken a step forward as a writer to be sure. Will there be a Joe 3? I am sure hoping so.
It should come as no surprise that I am a huge fan of sarcasm. I also happen to be a huge fan of vampires. And when the two come together, well let's just saw that is sheer awesomeness. I will admit I immediately fell in love with Joe in the first installment and was ecstatic to hear that Joe was getting a sequel. My favorite sarcastic vamp was going to make a come back!!
And come back he did. And this time Joe has found himself in a totally different predicament one that will lead him down roads that frankly he never thought he would find himself. These roads leave him questioning himself, his life and who he wants to be. And well the answer to these questions just might frighten him. I know they shocked the hell out of me. I would love to tell what the questions and answers were, but that would take the fun out of reading it and well where's the fun in that?
The Afterlife gave me everything I wanted from Steven Luna. More sarcasm, more trouble and of course more TMI (you know too much information). I mean seriously there are some things that just should not be shared! But that is just one of the reasons this book is so awesome. You see the tale of Joe Vampire is not told in the same manner as most characters, as Joe's tale is told in the form of a blog.
A blog that is 100% believable. I know I have read blogs like this....well not exactly, but cataloging the inner workings of a life daily. Granted Joe's life is much more interesting. I loved Joe in the first book with his sarcasm, angst, and general out look on life. And in The Afterlife I fell in love with Joe even more. Steven Luna did an amazing job of growing Joe as a character. Often making me forget that Joe was indeed a vampire as he faced both vampire problems and human ones. As I read I couldn't help thinking.....vampire with a soul, uh, how about a deep philosophical vampire with a soul? Cause that's what you get with Joe Vampire. (Talk about major growth). And not only does Joe go through a change, but all the characters in this tale grow. And Hube finally get's more of the spotlight and I have to say that I loved and hated what I saw. (Again read and you will understand--spoiler-y).
Steven Luna blew me away again with his uncanny ability to completely envelope me in the story. One where I felt like I was actually reading about a person's life. And one that left me thinking about cereal, Ho Ho's, Suzie Q's and Ding Dongs days later! Read it and you will understand. I mean how many books can pull off an entire chapter dedicated to the stuff? None, but Joe Vampire!!
The Afterlife may seem to be about just another vampire, but it is about more than that. It is about life, the hard truths of life told with a spin--through metaphors, sarcasm, angst and love.
*Received copy of book from author in exchange for an honest review
Here comes our favorite Vamp. Making sure his ears are covered, his fangs are filed and his cape well pressed. Wait - no - scratch the cape part. No cape for this bad boy. JOE VAMPIRE is back in business!
JOE VAMIPRE: THE AFTERLIFE is the follow up story of Joe Asher, an everyday man who gets his life sucked away and is left trying to live his normal non-vampire lifestyle while being...um...well...a vampire. Things seem to be looking up for Joe this time around. He’s got “this” under control and is living his life the best way he can. As life seems fit, the good things don’t stay good, though. They manage to get bad. And then worse. Joe, as in the first installment of the series, blogs about it all...in detail. Lots and lots of oversharing details. And as always, he has a great sense of snark and sarcasm to go along with the oversharing, that I really dig. Plus, because Mr. Luna is so good at it, lots of pun on pun action throughout.
In THE AFTERLIFE, we get to see Joe and some of the other characters from the first book: Hube, Joe’s family, Chloe, Louise and Bo. THE AFTERLIFE gives us a whole new round of faces to meet. Of course, not all are good, but what would be the fun in that if every new character was happy-go-lucky, right?
Okay, here is where I spill the beans and say that I did get to read THE AFTERLIFE before it was released into the wild. Like - way before. I “met” Mr. Luna about 9-ish months ago on Twitter and after reading JOE VAMPIRE, he allowed me to read THE AFTERLIFE. I loved it! Before writing this review I decided to re-read it (finished it last night) and I still love it just as much as did all those months ago. True story. I even got a dirty look from a guy in a car dealership waiting room because I laughed really loud at a line that I thought was particularly funny. And there were a few scenes I had completely forgotten about that I got all caught up in again. I feel it was time well spent, as I tend not to re-read books as I have a huge “to be read” list.
So, you should really get this book, and the first JOE VAMPIRE, if you don’t already have it. Read them both. Laugh, cry (yes, you’ll cry a little bit...unless you are without a heart!), shake your head at the off the wall stuff and laugh some more. I promise.
I give this book a big 5 out of 5, a must read. I once again found that I couldn't put this book down, I had to keep reading even if that meant walking around my house with my ereader, so I did just that! My favourite sarcastic, snarky vampire has re-opened his blog! Once again Steven Luna' writing is fantastic and I am still drawn into the story from the start. The sarcasm, metaphors, puns and oversharing are all present. There is more sarcasm from Joe and there is more trouble brewing too for both Joe and the people he loves. Steven Luna has done a great job of making the characters grow and develop especially with Joe and Hube. Both Joe and Hube find themselves facing new challenges that take them down some very different paths. Joe finds that once again he his faced with all sorts of problems both human and vampire related. Again the way the book is written still made me think that it was real and being written by a vampire (yes, I know, vampires don't exist).
I can't wait for the next instalment to see just what Steven Luna and life have in store for Joe and his nearest and dearest.
My Favourite Quote (location 2934, kindle)
"She was a regular fucking Vamptopussy, this one."
This is my favourite quote purely because it made me laugh so much; probably just my sense of humour! Also when I read this I was sat in my Local car dealership showroom waiting for my car and I burst out laughing, I looked up only to find that EVERYONE was staring at me!
My honest opinion is that both the Joe Vampire books are definitely worth a read and I would recommend them; I already have to a couple of my friends!
You know how you know a good book? You alternately cannot.stop.reading it even if you have to get up in 4 hours to go to work and at the same time you want to slam the book shut so that you don't see the characters about to make a big mistake.
...well, metaphorically slam the book; it's hard to do that when you're reading an ebook. Anyway...
Delightfully, I had this problem repeatedly with the second installment of Joe Vampire. This book is worth the time to read. I very much enjoyed going back to Joe's blog and see what was going on in his life, and delighted to find out that he had really gotten the girl.
And whole bunch more trouble.
Mr. Luna has crafted another great tale of a vampire who is just trying to figure This out. Joe is a compelling character and the people who surround him help to make a tapestry of life that is believable and endearing. I like the vampires in this world; they are a blend of a new ideas and old, and of course, still don't sparkle. But the story shines.
Buyer Beware: the consumption of food or beverage while reading these books may result in wiping spittle off your e-reading device.
Joe Vampire is back full of snark and refined sugar. This is the second book in Steven Luna's Joe Vampire series. If you haven't read the first book, it is a must read. You can read Joe Vampire: The Afterlife without reading the first Joe Vampire, but it's so amazing, so gut-bustingly hilarious, why miss it?
Joe Vampire: The Afterlife is hilarious and so smartly written. I love the character development in this book. There's all sorts of great laughs, but there's a great story underneath, lots of action and there's some touching moments too. Don't forget to read Joe Vampire as well.
I really enjoyed reading the first Joe Vampire book, but this second installment was an order of magnitude even more fun to read. It was just the perfect combination of sharp humor, unexpected allusions, and zany metaphors. But I think what made it such a fantastic read was that it was sweet (sometimes in a scatological way, but sweet nonetheless). It made me wistful; it made me wish this world was a little more like Joe's world. But then again, that's what a great fantasy book does.
Joe Vampire is back with his characteristic dose of wit and sarcasm. I'm not generally a fan of vampires but Joe has really sucked me in and I find myself getting emotionally attached to Joe and his whole inner circle. There is even a dastardly evil character that I was able to sling venomous thoughts at. Steven Luna is a master with words.
Steven...great book. I so loved the first book-Joe Vampire that I had to order the sequel immediately after finishing it. The relationship between Joe and Hube is a long and complex one, I was glad to see (spoiler alert) that that relationship was "healed" . 2 great characters. I can see it as a tv series or movie maybe....
This vampire story is strictly for adults, not teenagers. Book 2 is a continuation of book 1, not a sequel, so you definitely have to read the series in order. Joe resumes writing his laugh-out-loud blog that describes his life (or afterlife) as a vampire. Funny as it is, the book ends in a really touching tribute to brotherly love that can move you to tears. I'm looking forward to seeing where book 3 will take us, now that Joe is a married man and father.
.Mr. Luna has a way with English - I find many places he plays with phrasings In original ways, and aside from the plot, He has some observation on life that are worth highlighting, sharing, and thinking about.
This is not your usual Vampire story - no super powers (almost), no teen-romance-view, and really - I think the vampire Thing is just an excuse for good writing. I think mr. Luna could have written about his protagonists just as normal people Struggling with Life by John Lennon's description - what happens to you while you are making other plans - and it would Still be worth the time (and money).
I am only giving 4 stars because in some cases, I found some passages to be slightly too long, and long-winded for my taste. Still - I highly recommend this, and kudos to the writer.
The blog format was interesting the first time around, however it just was not that captivating the second time around. Also, the story just took too long to get anywhere.
This is an interesting read. Just as the first book, it starts off written from the perspective of a blogging vampire before transitioning seamlessly into the adventure with the vampire updating you on his blog. It's kind of a strange format to get used to but it makes for a fun read!
Storyline is developing nicely and characters are being fleshed out nicely. Anthropomorphic analysis not necessarily warranted here! Writing as a blog is a nice gimmick.
Listening to Joe drone on about the minutiae of his tedious life is not worth your time or money. This is only the 2nd book in 45 years that I have not finished, it really is that dull.
Loved this one as well. Better than the first if that is even possible. Was sad when I finished up the book i was so wrapped up in the story of Joe Vampire.
There were a lot of long paragraphs that I just couldn't get through. I realize this is supposed to be in the style of a blog, but good editing would have gotten rid of that. Honestly though, I really only skimmed after what happened to Baxter happened. I almost put the book down after that with the intention of never picking it up again. It's kind of a rule that you never, ever do to a dog in literature what was done to him. Still not sure if I'm going to read the third book and I already own it.
