Mindfulness for Life: A Six-Week Guide to Inner Peace

Rate this book
Take a break from your mind and step into the present moment with MINDFULNESS FOR LIFE.

Mindfulness is more than a set of tools to help manage the stresses of life; it's also about enhancing your overall wellbeing. In MINDFULNESS FOR LIFE, mindfulness teacher Oli Doyle shows you how living in the present moment can help in all areas of your life, including work, relationships, family life, creativity, memory and decision-making. Unlike many mindfulness books, Oli deconstructs the practice into everyday language. The easy-to-follow plan is broken down into six-week segments, with each week focused on a basic mindfulness principle. This book is also accompanied by daily online exercises to help your mind work more effectively and build your confidence.

Oli Doyle first started practising mindfulness in 2003, and all he could find were books by the Dalai Lama and other Buddhist writers. Like many others, he found the task of putting those words into practice incredibly difficult, so he set about deconstructing this practice of mindfulness and translating the experience into everyday language. He now teaches mindfulness workshops and through his website and his teaching project, www.alittlepeaceandquiet.com, he provides the practical teaching to help readers deepen their practice quickly. His first book, MINDFULNESS PLAIN AND SIMPLE is aimed at people new to mindfulness and offers an easy way in to the discipline, helping people learn how to be mindful and find peace and happiness.

I found this book a bit too simple and presenting nothing new.

I loved this book! It was well written and easy to understand. I read a little each day over 6 weeks and found it a lovely way to bring more mindfulness into my life. This book has been on my shelf for years and I’m so glad that I finally read it. Great for newbies and those who practice mindfulness.

This turns the idea of mindfulness slightly on its head, only slightly but enough to make life easier. By end I found going too fast for me. 6 weeks is too fast. The author admits this at the beginning. I wanted to finish it in about 6 weeks to give to a friend and complete my reading challenge. So carried on. When I get it back I shall go through it again, at a speed that may be one day a month. A good book which, at least initially makes things as simple as mindfulness is meant to be. Very good.

Brilliantly simple - a great guide for anyone wishing to take themselves on a journey to greater peace. It doesn't go into theory and history like Sam Harris' Waking Up, it focuses on the practical steps to becoming more mindful. It delivers on its promise.

I found some of the more abstract concepts difficult to grasp but overall I found it be helpful for everyday life and presented in an easy to follow fashion.

I really wanted to like this book, and I enjoyed Doyle's last book Mindfulness Plain and Simple. I guess the biggest issue is that is too simple and some of the exercises aren't quite enough to bring me to a realization or make mindfulness any easier than it was before. I think the concept isn't explained well enough and is too bare bones. It's a particularly hard book to get through because it's broken into exercises/activities day by day and makes it hard to read at once so getting through it is a real mission. I think I would have preferred something a bit more weekly like the title suggested in ' a six week guide to inner peace' so more focus on things to do during the week rather than each day as it can make it hard to get into the book and really grasp concepts firmly. I really love Oli Doyle's style of writing it helps beginners to mindfulness grasp concepts and its simply worded with real life examples. However, I think he needed a bit more detail and focus in this book and the daily activities were more hassle than the benefits? I feel explaining most of the concepts better would be more useful than trying to make someone experience a somewhat mild awareness comparatively to a more meaningful exercise focused less often in the book. This book for me- wasn't enough to encourage mindful behavior and had too many small sections that didn't come together for a big picture benefit. I think Oli Doyle's other book was much better and helped me understand mindfulness a lot better so this book was a let down and not a great layout for someone who knows basic mindfulness.

Mindfulness for Life is a self-help book aimed to teach you how to live in the moment. I knew nothing about this subject before reading this book, so at least I learned something new after it.

Mindfulness is a mental state in which you are only aware of the moment, not thinking about the past or the future, just now. It's difficult to accomplish but possible, by following the tasks and ideas from the book.

My problem with it is that it starts with the reader having problems with the past or future, with focusing on tasks at hand or being troubled by memories or the future. I don't really have that problem so all the exercises I saw in the book didn't work for me. I just couldn't identify with any of the scenarios it proposed (I'm not overwhelmed by life, I don't spend all my day on facebook, I'm able to enjoy my day...) so I got bored reading it. I'm sure it can help other people, though.
