Sfar is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics. Many of his comics were published by L'Association which was founded in 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked together with many of the new movement's main artists, e.g. David B. and Lewis Trondheim. The Donjon series which he created with Trondheim has a cult following in many countries.
Some of his comics are inspired by his Jewish heritage as the son of Jewish parents (an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father). He himself says that there is Ashkenazi humor in his Professeur Bell series (loosely based on Joseph Bell), whereas Le chat du rabbin is clearly inspired by his Sephardic side. Les olives noires is a series about a Jewish child in Israel at the time of Jesus. Like Le chat du rabbin, the series contains a lot of historical and theological information.
His main influences are Fred and André Franquin as well as Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Will Eisner, Hugo Pratt and John Buscema.
From 2009 to 2010, Sfar wrote and directed 'Serge Gainsbourgh: Une Vie Heroique', a biopic of the notorious French songwriter, of whom Sfar is a self-confessed fanatic. The film, which draws substantially on Sfar's abilities as a comic book artist through its extensive use of fantasy artwork, animation and puppetry, was released in 2010 to general critical acclaim.

The tendency to extend the 'subjective thinking time' of our cat, that I've noticed in vol.2, is very much visible in vol. 6- an over-the-top, over-expanded exploration of the cat's 'drama queen' moment. And while I understand the more experimental character of this volume, I really did not love being caught in this character's head.
Unpopular opinion: I don't understand why my friend, who recommended the series to me, loved it so much.

How to live whereas your singularity isolates to you. The cat is too intelligent to be a cat, but it is not a man. The cat speaks with a fine judgement capacity.
And its world break down. Zbayla the woman he loves is pregnant. She forsakes it. The cat knows that it will be necessary to share her with the baby. He flees. He seeks the solution in the religion, without success.
It tries to become a normal cat, but we cannot (and do not have to) fight against our own nature. It is a mouse which will show it the cynicism and the lie of the world. The cat will eat the mouse. The world is unjust. Thus it will return home. The cat is jealous. Patiently, it will try to find its exclusive relation with Zblaya.
I had not liked well the 5th volume of the cat (Jérusalem d'Afrique). After Rebatet (trying reading), I sought something of light. Missed. Sfar gives us a deep and serious account on the difference and love.

Aussitôt acheté, aussitôt terminé et beaucoup aimé. Ayant acheté les albums du chat au fur et à mesure de leur sortie, je n'avais plus trop de souvenirs du dernier (paru il y a ... 9 ans) mais il semblait me rappeler que ça n'avait pas été la folle extase. Là j'ai eu l'impression de retrouver tout ce qui m'avait fait adorer cette série : l'humour, l'irrévérence, la réflexion sur la religion... Seul bémol, l'album se lit excessivement vite et je reste avec un goût de trop peu sur la fin mais autrement, super bien.

Une série magistrale et magnifique.
Je la relirai très certainement plusieurs fois, pour mieux en saisir l'essence (là j'ai dévoré les 6 tomes en 24 heures, alors, j'ai nécessairement manqué certaines subtilités).
Les tomes 5 et 6 sont mes préférés.

No i pojawił się potomek, czas wiec czworonogowi zbierać się z domu pełnego szczęśc...blee...nie dla kotów. Chyba jeden z słabszych tomów Sfara, lecz i tak czekam na kolejny. :)

Zaskakująco dobry jak na kontunuację klasycznej serii. Mam wrażenie, że bardziej nawiązuje do pierwszej i najlepszej części Kota, niż jakikolwiek inny tom. Znowu główny nacisk padł na to, co było największą siłą opowieści, a więc filozoficzno-religijny spór między pobożnym Żydem i kotem-indywidualistą.

C'est un bon album mais j'ai tout de même été déçu. Le style brouillon est toujours moche mais je m'y suis habitué. Avec un titre pareil, je m'attendais à quelques grandes révélations mystiques, mais non. C'est juste une histoire existentielle de chat.

C'est loin d'être le meilleur de la série. Le scénario est un peu léger.

Je rejoins quelques commentaires lus précédemment... Les précédents tomes ne m'avaient pas particulièrement marquée et j'ai retrouvé avec grand plaisir les personnages après cette longue absence.
