Admired and reviled, for more than thirty years Robert 'Ming' Menzies stood at the centre of power in Australia. His concerns and political style influenced two generations; from the beginning of his long political career he grew to dominate the practice and language of Australian politics. The first of two volumes, this book documents the early years of the brilliant lawyer, who came to be known as 'Pig-Iron Bob' and who was to create the Liberal Party from the ashes of the UAP, becoming a towering figure in post-war Australia.
The authoritative biography of Robert Menzies. Very accessible for the casual reader (while still being scholarly). Divided into two volumes, 1894-1943 and 1944-1978. The author made a good choice in doing so, rather than publishing one gigantic biography as some have done in the past for similar figures. The author has done well to not get bogged down with irrelevant details, which is a pet peeve of mine for biographies. My only complaint would be that the more personal and intimate aspects are sometimes omitted ... the author nails the who's, what's, when's, where's, and how's, but not always the why's.
