With a little help and a holiday miracle, can a determined animal rescue worker find and save a missing dog in time to give a wounded warrior the Christmas he desperately longs for?
Jeannie Montgomery runs an animal shelter in Kabul, where she not only rescues strays, but also helps Western military personnel bring their newfound pets home when their tour of duty is up. Jeannie's heart nearly breaks when she receives an email from a stateside marine, pleading for her help with finding his dog. As she begins communicating with him via Skype, an instant attraction sparks between them, strengthening Jeannie's resolve to do whatever it takes to fulfill his Christmas wish.
Zachary West lost his leg in an IED blast in Afghanistan. Since returning to Phoenix, he's been living in self-imposed isolation, hiding his scars from the world, but he hasn't forgotten the furry friend whose warning saved his life. More than anything, he wants to have Akilah home with him in time for Christmas. Jeannie seems to be the answer to his prayers. Her optimism and tenacity give Zach hope for Akilah, while her loving kindness helps heal his battered heart. He wants to believe that she's the one he's been waiting for all his life, but how can a gorgeous woman like her ever love a broken, scarred warrior like him?
I'm a hopeless romantic and believer in fairy tales. Even as a little girl, my fondest dream was to find a Prince Charming who would sweep me off my feet. I'm happy to report I've been married to him for twenty-five years. Although I've been an avid reader since I was two years old, I never envisioned myself as a writer until 2009. Now I feel like I've finally found my life's passion. The muses keep the ideas flowing faster than I can put them on the page. I hope that my readers will love my characters and stories every bit as much as I've loved creating them.
I currently live in hot, sunny Phoenix, Arizona with my husband and three mischievous cats. In addition to writing, I enjoy reading, hanging out on GoodReads, surfing the web, watching TV or movies, book shopping, and feeding my insatiable thirst for knowledge.

"Heart of the Season" is the second book in the Loving Hearts series by a Goodreads friend of mine, full disclosure. I can honestly say that I enjoyed this novella outside of being friends with the author. I can't say what I loved more, the hero, Zachary, an Afghanistan US Marine war vet or his dog, Akilah. Well honestly, their relationship is at the heart of this story. Julianna is clearly an animal lover, and she understands the power of the human animal bond. How having a pet can add so much to one's life and save one both physically and emotionally. That foundation of this story is a very strong one, and built on top of it is a believable romance. While this has somewhat of a happy for now feel, I do believe in the love between Zach and Jeannie. I think they are soulmates and they have a strong bond that is friendship, mutual respect, and a meeting of minds and hearts, on top of sexual attraction.
I love that Zachary is truly a very gentle man. While he's a soldier and a warrior, he's also a sensitive person. And it's okay for men to be sensitive. It's nice to be able to see that vulnerability in a hero without it seeming to compromise his masculinity. I could appreciate Jeannie even more that she respected the gentle man that Zach was. I loved how the narrative shows why Zach is the man he is due to his being raised by his grandmother, a sweet, caring woman who loved him deeply and raised him with strong values. Seeing male characters who have been raised by strong female figures depicted in a positive way doesn't get old.
I won't even lie. This book made me cry several times. I am so in love with both Akilah and Zach, and their deep friendship. I do have a weakness for beta heroes and Zach with his scars and his disability definitely snuck into my heart from practically the first page of my Kindle as I read it. Akilah is a precious furry baby. I wanted to give her a hug. The thought of what those poor dogs go through on the frontlines is heartbreaking.I can definitely see why the soldiers fall in love with them and want to bring them home. A relationship forged under those conditions will stand the test of time.
I haven't talked much about Jeannie. In a work, she was a great heroine. She's a principled, warm, caring young woman who is putting her principles to action. Going to work in an animal shelter in Afghanistan is not for the faint of heart, especially for a young woman who comes from a privileged environment. I like that she is a deep person and has the ability to look deep. Her love for animals and people is very obvious and made me loved her more.
This book even has some good action scenes on the frontline. They were well-written and it's obvious that Julianna did her research. Kudos to her for bringing a situation to light where people and animals could use some help.
While I personally am not a big fan of happy for now endings, I think this one works pretty well. I hope that we get to see more of Zach and Jeannie's developing relationship, and definitely more of Akilah.
3.75~5 ⭐️ I thought this book was quick paced and enjoyable. What I particularly didn't enjoy was how quickly the romance developed, while it wasn't Insta love it was close, maybe insta lust, but the romance spans over a month and they only see each other in the flesh for one day through the duration of This novel. While the love between the characters was genuine and believable I just couldn't overlook the time it developed over. I thought each character was likeable there wasn't a single character I detested. I thought Zach (main male/one pov) and his scars were a interesting storyline and even at time heart warming. He thought himself disgusting, unloveable all cause shrapnel disfigured his features. Jeannie (main female/other pov) was kind and overly optimistic, at times too much. I enjoyed the times when she wasn't overly happy as it showed me as a person she had more depth and to me it made her more real the few times she got upset as its not possible for Someone to be happy and optimistic all the damn time. I enjoyed the animal aspect of the story, I particularly enjoyed the scene when Zach was reunited with his lost best friend the k-nine Akilah, I though it was incredibly touching and heart warming. On a enjoyment level this book was a 4 star but I docked it 0.25 stars cause the romance wasn't slow burning enough for me, it was just kinda wam bam, I wanted more time, more conversations, and more relationship development. Anyway I overall I just enjoyed this book.
Kleenex needed with this one, especially if you have a soft spot for animals... heroic dog/Kiki. Very sweet insta-love Christmas fairytale romance between a wounded Marine/Zach and an animal rescue miracle worker/Jeannie. A feel good heartwarming, emotional (sniff), story with a harlequin edge.
I'm the author of this book. It's a new adult, contemporary romance and the second installment in my Loving Hearts series.
My hero, Zach, is a Marine who's been through a lot in his twenty-four years, most recently losing a leg to an IED blast while serving in Afghanistan. More important to him, though, was waking up in the hospital and learning that his furry best friend, Akilah, had been left behind. He longs to bring her home to Phoenix for Christmas but keeps running up against brick walls until a chance meeting with the director of a local animal shelter brings him hope.
My heroine, Jeannie Montgomery, is a cousin to the Montgomery siblings who were introduced in book one of the series. She runs an animal shelter in Kabul. As she begins communicating with Zach over Skype, she instantly falls in love with this wounded warrior with a heart of gold. She'd do anything to fulfill his Christmas wish, but many obstacles stand in the way of her rescuing Akilah and convincing Zach that her love for him is real.
I had so much fun creating these characters and this story. Their journey to love is a touching and emotional one. Jeannie is filled with optimism and hope, while Zach is brooding, uncertain, and very self-conscious of his scars. A shared love for Akilah brings them together, but their newfound love for one another is an unbreakable bond that keeps them going when things look bleak. I hope my readers will enjoy reading Zach, Jeannie, and Akilah's story as much as I enjoyed writing it.
The second book in the Loving Hearts series by Julianna Douglas. Zach West is back in the states after being injured in Afghanistan. He lost a leg and is scarred. Now he is determined to find the dog who saved his life. But there were rules about dogs. Number one was don't get attached. Jeannie Montgomery is over in Afghanistan, running an animal shelter and she may be Zach's last chance in finding his dog, Akilah.
So most of the story takes place with Zach in Phoenix and Jeannie in Kabul. They communicate via Skype. They are attracted to the other but both have their own issues. It was a sweet story and while I'm not a fan of long-distance romances, I really liked this. In fact, I think I liked it better than the first book in the series. I have no problem in recommending this book to Contemporary Romance fans everywhere, especially those who have a special place in their hearts for dogs.
What a wonderful story! I really enjoyed hearing about animal rescue and adoption in the Middle East, and certainly agree its so necessary to our soldiers' mental health. Nicely written, and I look forward to reading more from this author.
To the women reading this, I called dibs on Zach first!
Heart of the Season is by far my favorite of the Loving Hearts series. The story of a wounded veteran trying to find the dog he befriended in Iraq and finding love along the way—what isn’t there to like? Answer: nothing! In my review of His Heart’s Desire, the first book in the series, one of the issues I had was that the main male character was too perfect, but in this book Zach is anything but perfect. He is insecure, scarred from head to toe—and for people who love imperfections like I do, that is a huge turn on. Even though I am a person who prefers multiple sex scenes in her novels, I thought that the one sex scene here was perfectly placed. Adding any more would have taken away from the story. I read this is August as a new release and it was a great story then, but what would have made it better would have been cuddling up on the sofa with a warm blanket and a cup of hot cocoa while it snowed outside and the Hallmark channel played in the background. Heart of the Season was a terrific story that kept me reading until I finished and I see a Hallmark channel book-to-movie release in the future for this author!
Hearts of the Season is the second book in the series by Julianna Douglas. This is a heartwarming entertaining story of a wounded marine, his dog and the woman who brings them back together. It will warm your heart and is full of Christmas miracles. Douglas has the amazing abililty to entice her readers from page one and you will not be able to put this book down. Zach and Jeannie are perfect together for they are both truly innocents. Even though this book is fiction it brought to light the difficulty thst veterans meet when trying to bring their dogs back home with them. I loved this story.
What a wonderful story! Zach a wounded military man on the search for his dog who was left behind in Afghanistan. When he meets the Montgomery family who put him in touch with Jeannie who rescues animals in Afghanistan. Follow their story and see for yourself why this is such an amazing read! This story pulled me in right from the beginning and I couldn't put it down till I finished it. It has it all! The feels, romance, a little danger, and of course dogs! Loved it!
Zach is a wounded warrior trying to find the dog who saved his life in Afghanistan. When he reaches out to Jeannie, she makes it her mission to reunite Zach with his dog. Through Skype, Zach and Jeannie form a friendship that slowly turns into something much more. A lovely book filled with all the feels and a build-up of chemistry that doesn't disappoint.
I love military romance stories!!! Zach has lost his leg over seas and wants the dog that was with him over there. He gets in touch with Jeannie. Jeannie communicates with him online and is trying to get his dog home for Christmas.
It was a tear jerker for me but I absolutely loved it and couldn't out it down. I love military romance and wounded warrior stories!!!
A heartwarming holiday romance, this book beautifully blends love, hope, and resilience. With a touching premise of an animal rescue worker striving to reunite a wounded marine with his beloved dog, it delivers an emotional journey filled with determination and healing. Perfect for fans of feel-good Christmas stories with a dash of romance.
This was such a beautiful heart breaking story of a marine who had been through tour of Duty and wanted a dog!! I loved the interaction of him and Jeannie! This story was just as good as the first one but also it was more heartbreaking!
This was a wonderful story. I loved the characters. It was sweet, tender, and steamy, a perfect combo. I will definitely want to read more by this author.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading this book. This is the second book in the series, but you do not have to read the first one in order to enjoy the second book. The first book introduces readers to some of the characters you will find in this book and will give you an even greater understanding of some of the supporting characters, but you can still understand the characters without reading the first book. That being said, I thought the first book had a completely different feel from the second book.
The plot was well timed and the points of view, which change throughout the book, are easy to follow. The writing style allows you to understand each character better. Jeannie is suffering from heartbreak in her past, but you see her continue to grow and channel her determination into her job. She builds people up and has compassion for both people and animals. I thought Jeannie was a strong female lead who knew who she was and was able to overcome any obstacle. Zach has trouble accepting his past and everything he has been through in his short life. He tries to open himself back up to working and communicating with people. Zach is not as strong of a character, but you can understand why he has insecurities and doubts. The two bond over the goal of bringing Akilah to the United States to be with Zach. I greatly enjoyed getting to see Akilah’s journey and learning more about her connection to Zach. Again, changing the point of view helped immensely with not missing Akilah’s story and the brave things Akilah did throughout the book.
I truly enjoyed this second book by a goodreads friend from way back. I could tell how much she has grown as a writer and appreciated the amount of research she must have done to produce this original plot with two settings and make it come alive for her readers. The characters were very likable and their interaction was fun to "observe" as the hero (and I mean that term literally) was a beta male and his heroine was the one who took the lead in the developing relationship without being super aggressive and off-putting. I am also a sucker for a good animal story so I was totally on board with that aspect of this book. My only criticisms are that, first, I felt there were a few too many cliches and dated turns of phrase. Also, I believe the lead male had too many insecurities. I believe it was enough that he was disabled as a result of his service without also making him sweat over differences in social status between him and many of the (related) other characters. There was also a tiny bit of repetition, especially when the reader experiences an event with one character, and later that character describes the event in the same detail to another character. This is just nit-picky stuff, though, and did not ruin my pleasure in reading this book. Kudos, Julianna - you easily earned 4+ stars, working your way up to 5!
A sweet, emotional, heart-warming story perfect for the Holidays. Zach, a wounded Vet, is all alone. He has no family and has been permanently separated from his Marine “family” due to his injuries. Not to mention his self-imposed isolation in an effort to avoid the stares his scars receive. Zach is desperately looking to find his dog Kiki, who not only made his service more bearable but most importantly, saved his life. He has all but given up hope when he meets Jeannie.
Jeannie, who runs a rescue shelter in Kabul, works desperately to find Kiki. She faces numerous struggles and set-backs but never gives up hope. Zach and Jeannie form a special bond, for Zach she is the first person to see past his injuries to his true self. For Jeannie, Zach is her rock, her person to confide in while dealing with daily struggles of rescuing animals.
A beautiful Christmas story - but it can be read by anyone, not only those who celebrate this time of year. It is a heartwarming, tearjerking, romantic and funny story about a fighter who lost nearly everything and a heroine with such a big heart she cares more for others than herself. Going to Afghanistan to rescue dogs who built a friendship with US soldiers who don't want to leave them behind is a dangerous thing to do but it is done (and part of the price you pay for this book goes to just such an organization, I read) and helps soldiers cope with what they have lived through there. It is a bittersweet love story and I absolutely fell in love with Akhira, the dog, she is such a fighter and I rooted for her all along. But she isn't the only animal heroine here and I really enjoyed that!
The perfect story for the first day of a new year. An injured vet, both physically and emotionally, a kind woman who doesn't see his scars, an adorable dog - what else could one want?
The man in question has lost not only a limb, but a dog that he had "adopted" in Afghanistan. His buddies have tried to look after the dog for him, but bad news follows. The woman, Jeannie Montgomery, works for a rescue organization that brings dogs out of the war-torn country, and Zach makes the connection with his plea for help. That's not the only connection, though.
The story takes you on a roller coaster of hope and loss, before the HEA. Good one.
Fabulous story about a wounded warrior and his two girls - the dog who saved his life in Afghanistan and the woman who brought him back to life. Almost too sweet, but so believable and heart-warming that I don't care, this is a wonderful book. I have a soft spot in my heart for those who serve and protect our country and I love animals. This story combined both in a great way. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to feel good and enjoy a good book at the same time. Two thumbs and a paw up!
Wow, the Heart of the Season is a book I could not put down!!! Julianna is able to transport you into the book with her wonderful writing, its mind blowing!
Heart of the Season is about an Afghan Veteran who returns home wounded and broken. During his healing, he recalls his K9 being left behind and in turn searches for her from another country. During searching he is able to form new friendships, and business relations which in turn leads to a Romantic relationship.
This book keeps you on the edge of you seat, and I can't wait for more.
The only thing I didn't like in this book is the word Sweetie! Now that being said I really liked this book! It was well written and was a very emotional read! Zach who is a scarred veteran is almost a recluse, because of his injuries, is trying to find the dog he had to leave behind in Afghanistan. Fate intervenes with a girl named Jeannie. This is a touching story of two people with a common goal falling in love. Y'all get your hankies ready! You will need them!
This is a lovely holiday HEA book about a wounded hero (Zach) lost in society and a young determined, enthusiastic girl named Jeannie.
The story follows Zach's readjustment to life outside of the marines and jeannie's quest to find Zach's beloved pet dog KiKi, who is lost in Afghanistan.
I love a happy ever after, and found this book a quick and easy read.
Omgosh this book was so over the top and lame. It was like reading an ABC Family, Walt Disney, or Hallmark story. The H and H spent more time apart then they did together. I kept rolling my eyes through out the whole book. I got up to 86% percent and had to stop torturing myself. It was just soo,,I don't know,,,sugary,,,immature,,,not well developed at all.
i was givin this book for my honest review heart of the season had every emotion you could think of love hate patine humor pulls on your heart strings this was my first book iv read from julianna and i loved it i know it wont be my last
I love Zack and Jeanne in this book almost more than Ethan and Becca from the first book. Although this is book 2 in the series, it can be read as a standalone since the original characters make an appearance but do not play a giant role.
I am slightly embarrassed to admit that this book made me cry ... Three times. What I imagined would be a sweet little read, was actually a study in love and devotion, loneliness and hope. And it was all wrapped up in a cute and smile inducing story.
