THIS WAS AMAZING!! The premise on its surface layer was already interesting. Yuzumi, an otome game lover, got a job on a crew that makes those types of games. (They are basically dating simulators.)
But when I realized that it’s a little deeper than that, it got even better. Yuzumi is in a dating sim of her own - but she hasn’t realized it yet. When I had that thought, I laughed because it was so ironic. It just makes this a better and more funny read. The way this idea was incorporated was subtly done most of the time.
I’m not loving the art a ton, but I definitely enjoy it. It’s from a recent manga era where the art specializes in points and sharp edges. Not my favorite style.
It does make the game industry seem easy to publish your work. There are some points where Yuzumi is struggling but it really just glossed over them. Game developers often are much more busy and the programmers have triple the amount of work shown here. They would need a programming team and not just one guy. But I suppose accuracy in the field isn’t exactly what the author was going for.
For anyone that likes otome games then this manga will definitely appeal. My experience with otome games is pretty much non-existent apart from Hatoful Boyfriend (if that even counts as they are pigeons 😂) and ive never quite understood the appeal of otome based anime like Amnesia so the appreciation of this manga may have been lost on me. Overall Otome Mania was inoffensive and has nice art.
I liked learning a little bit about otome (story-based video game romances for women, according to Wikipedia) and how they are made. Unfortunately, the story is set up like an otome game, so we have a generic female protagonist trying to move up in the industry while meeting a very long string of possible romantic interests. I felt bored watching the parade of men wind by and couldn't find the spark of energy in the storytelling that would make me want to root for the woman.
This is a fun manga about making Otome games. We follow a young woman named Yuzumi who is an up and coming game creator. She begins learning the ropes of making games. The characters are cute, and I really enjoyed reading this! If you're a fan of Otome games, I highly recommend picking this up.
I would give this a solid 3/5 stars. For some reason, I'm back and forth on this. This has a cute aesthetic and vibe, as well as gives a general rundown of what takes place in a VN's company. (Nothing specific, as this is a bit dated compared to what a typical company does now, at least in my opinion) The characters are likable enough. I have a hard time believing that the MC is a "master gamer AND game creator", as she constantly makes mistakes. Granted, that's what is necessary to learn more of what the company does for getting their product out to the public, but still. And speaking of which, her personality, as well as the other characters, do fall into a trope. I don't think I have much of an opinion to complain about that specific sort of thing, but at the same time, I have a nagging feeling that tropes should have been put aside. Fleshing the characters out could've helped make this relatable and easier for the reader to fully grasp the situation. As I cheated and peeked at the summary of the second (and last) volume of the series, it's clear to me that the focus of the story should've been fixed on the gaming industry and what they do behind the scenes, and not on who could be a love interest for the MC when that was all in vain. I wanna give the mangaka kudos for wanting to publish a manga about the industry of otome (as she left a side note at the end of the volume about her reason for putting out Otome Mania). The idea itself is great, and I wish I could have loved this more. However, the nagging feeling I mentioned before and reading all the other reviews has pretty much settled that the story was a miss for me. It had potential, and there's a seedling of it still there, but I don't think it would bud well especially after being on the bookshelves for....has it seriously been three years? (According to this post's date) So....it's kind of hard for me to recommend this to anyone when I feel so conflicted about the story. I'll leave it up to you from the premise of my review if you want to jump into this short series. (Also, holy crappers, I just realized the reason why they call the one character "Oil King"....do not let the modernists see it....Please, this poor mangaka wouldn't deserve the backlash after so long of this being published)
Today’s post is on Otome Mania!! Vol. 1 by Yurino Tsukigase. It is 180 pages long and is published by Seven Seas Publishing. The cover has the main cast on it with the main character, Yuzumi, in the center. The intended reader is someone who likes shojo manga, otome games, and girl nerd culture. There is no foul language, no sex, and no violence in this manga. The story is told from third person close of the main character, Yuzumi. There Be Spoilers Ahead. From the back of the book- Yuzumi loves otome games. Her dream is to become a producer and make a game she loves! She makes mistakes and gets scolded by her manager, Tachibana, but she refuses to lose! For all the otome games fans out there, here’s a story about making it through the industry!
Review- This is a very sweet and adorable story! As someone who loves and plays Otome games myself, this was a great read. Yuzumi is a gamer who loves otome games, which are games for girls and women with handsome men in them. Now otome games can be about all kinds of stories but romance is at their heart and Yuzumi knows this very well. What she does not know is how to make one and what needs to happen to make your game a success. But Yuzumi has a team around her to help her make her dreams come true! This volume is about setting up the world and getting to know Yuzumi. She is a fun main character, very much like an otome game heroine, she is sweet, learning the ropes, but is determined to see her dream come true. If you are a fan of otome games then you need to try this series. This was a fun read and I am very excited to see how Yuzumi and her co-workers end up.
I give this volume a Five out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I bought this manga with my own money.
Sepertinya kuharus mencoba sekali bermain otoge, biar merasakan dikelilingi cowok-cowk tampan hahahaha XD
Cute fluffy shoujo manga. Classic passionate but slightly ditzy main chara in an environment where she has to prove herself (that also happens to be a reverse harem). There wasn't anything necessarily bad about this but I think I might be tired of this kind of basic plot at this point, just because I've read/watched so many that are EXACTLY like this. I think I might be tired of this style of shoujo manga in general.
I actually was really enjoying this Manga, but the last part of the book was really rushed and finished abruptly. The time skips became jolted and towards the end missed details that would have been really great to explore. But I would recommend this to someone who wants a less action based manga and is new to reading manga like myself.
Not bad technically, but the story just felt like a glossed version of the game industry in Japan. If the story hadn’t been so keen on parodying an otome game setup, it might have been more interesting and engaging rather than trying to fill in those tropes.
Very Nozaki-Kun vibes with this one. It is exactly what you'd think but she isn't a high schooler and I love it for that. There are few working manga that are this good. Shojo fans this is a definite read.
The characters aren’t as strong as they could be, but I found this a very interesting look into the otome game industry. I wouldn’t have imagined it was so hectic!
Otome games are geared toward women where the goal is to get the male and female characters into a relationship. This manga follows a superfan who wants to become a producer.
I like otome games and also shoujo manga. However, I'm very picky about it due to a lot of stories and scenarios to be completely cliche and shallow that I can't even bother to watch or play the game (ex: diabolik lover). Sadly, a lot of otoge and shoujo manga falls under this scenario.
Over and over again, characters in this kind of genre are very shallow. It's not only the men, but also the main character. The MC would often be described as this dumb, naive girl who wants to do her best!! But she doesn't know sh*t and her supposedly good "trait" is only used to appeal cute and useless and to show that she needs protection from her fellow love interests.
As this manga is clearly based on otome games and the MC (Yuzumi Haruna) falls under the naive MC stereotype, I will also talk about the few otoge MC's that doesn't have this trait, like mystic messenger and also kuni no alice. Sadly though, if they're not the dumb uwu naive MC they would be the tsundere annoying ass hat MC.
Why can't there be any good shoujo manga or otoge with sensible characters?
Amnesia is a good example of a dumb uwu naive girl, but their scenario, the way they introduce the story, the VA and the myseries makes you overlook that. Beside the MC doesn't do or say much unless in the ending. But the point is: They let you shape the MC based on the choices you choose.
Ofc, this is a manga, so the mangaka had to implement the personality. But why this personality? Don't we have enough cliche characters in the anime/manga industry? Every time some new series came out it's basically just a carbon copy of the previous trending manga.
As an artist, wouldn't they be interested to try something interesting instead of something that's appealing to the crowd?
When I bought two editions of this manga, for some reason I thought it's going to be a good manga filled with humour, they describe the characters on the back of the book with typical anime personalities. Which I thought it would mean as a parody. God, I was wrong.
I regretted purchasing two of these book, thinking it would be good. It's the absolute worst. I've never found an actual good shoujo manga and otoge where the characters have more personalities in them. I would never recommend this to anyone.
However, the positive thing I can say about this is that it's easy to read. Though I've noticed some facts about the otoge industries which are just false to the point they're making this even more cliche than the genre otoge already is.
This story also managed to make a big deal out of something that isn't a problem to begin with. They have the basis of telling a story (i.e a journey of a character that's struggling with something) but it just... doesn't appeal at all.
This manga makes the joy of playing otoge (actually overcoming problems, finding more about the stories) to be useless. What is the point of earning these affection from these attractive dudes when there's nothing interesting about your personality or your story? Give the MC some real personality, faults, and opinion.
On a plus note: I wonder why a lot of girls seem to like the asshole guy type? The manager is an ass and I can't stand him. I don't know why people seem to think that type is cool and you just have to "ease up" to him lmao nah btch bye. I guess ppl find pleasure in making someone cold to ease up on you.
Tldr; as bad as diabolic lover (unless you like that kind of stuff), characters and story are shallow, lmao @ yurino tsukigase wyd, not recommend.
I'm not very familiar with otome games but despite this I was easily intrigued. This manga was short and easy. I enjoyed seeing the main character pitch a game of their own and getting the short summary of what it takes to make that otome game. I think if the game that the characters created in this manga existed, it'd be the first and only otome game I'll ever play. Learning languages by speaking to hot fictional men does sound motivating if imma be honest.
Otome Mania follows Yuzumi, a major otome game fan girl, as she works for one of the leading Otome game creators. It follows the development and creation of an otome game, which is more or less a dating simulator targeted towards young women. Yuzumi is constantly surrounded with handsome profressionals with their own unique attributes mirroring the otome games that the manga is parodying.
I'm going to chalk this one up to cultural differences. While it did show the inner workings of game creation more realistically than New Game by Tokunou Shoutarou, I felt this missed the mark. For one Yuzumi is constantly berated and looked down upon for being a newbie without given actual direction. She's usually left floundering for information then she stumbles upon the right way to do it after doing it the wrong way, usually a number of times, and being judged and scolded for not knowing better.
The whole premise feels like it's Yuzumi surrounded by men, kind of a reverse harem, but they're all sporatically flirty with her while kind of scolding/teaching her like I mentioned above. I think it would have been better off if it was less of a teaching manga and more of a work-related manga. You can show the progress of the project without leading the character who is supposed to be doing the job or at least show her being semi competent and profressional, like in New Game.
It felt like it kind of sat on the fence not entirely sure what kind of a manga it wanted to be and while it's as far as I can tell a two volume series there is already a complete story in this first volume. The game has already been created and launched. I'm not sure where it would be going in the second volume or in any future volumes.
The title would have been better if there was a hint of romance even making it a complete parody of otome games. A lot of fan service-y scenes of handsome men fawning over the meek newbie would've been better than what we got.
I really wish Seven Seas would allow you to try a chapter of a manga before buying it so I wouldn't have to guess. This is where Viz and Kodansha shines. It would be very beneficial to the American audience that reads digitally or cannot get to a book store to flip through the pages as a taste test. It also would keep people from looking up scans.
This moves pretty fast, sometimes a little too fast. I guess it fits in with the industry it is talking about but I felt a little more could be done with it. The main character is a tad on the flat side, she hasn't shown much personality yet. I'm diving straight into volume 2 and seeing how that builds upon the story.
