The Merk is restless, dissatisfied with Nexus's performance as champion and executioner since the massacre on Mars. The fallout from that incident is just beginning: Of the two Quatros responsible, Sinclair has disappeared, and Kreed is being tracked by two Gucci assassins hired by the Martian government. The Merk now psychically reaches out to Michana - the youngest daughter of the late General Loomis, bent on revenge.

Nexus doesn't have the luxury of worrying about any of this, though . . . the artificial black hole known as the Gravity Well is on the verge of collapse, which endangers the entire solar system! He and Judah Maccabee set out to appeal to the one creature who can manipulate black holes . . . Ashram, resident of the Bowl-Shaped World. The only time the duo encountered this strange world, they were with the likewise bizarre Badger!

And speak of the devil . . .

I really didn't like the pocket universe of the Bowl Shaped World and would just as soon Nexus didn't return to it. That aside, this volume works very well, as Nexus tries to vary his assassination MO and the muscle-man Creed finds himself targeted by Martian intelligence for his massacre on that planet.

One of the strongest Nexus volumes, as Creed both kicks ass and sacrifices himself, which somehow reinforces Horatio's trip to the mysterious and dangerous Bowl Shaped World, bringing the theme of risk and duty to the forefront. There are several perfect pages, which are rare in comic books.

Badger returns, and Horatio and Judah head into the Bowl-Shaped World to seek the aid of its creator, Ashram. Lots of fun, sci-fi adventure stuff here, beginning in issue 45 (and carrying through to issue 50, in Archive 8). I remember many of the lingering effects of this arc, but I've forgotten more of the arc itself than I'd realized.

The issues leading up to the epic are probably even better, including a personal favorite that has Horatio wondering how an otherwise caring man could be a killer for three years of his life, but a genuinely good person the rest of his life. Going undercover, Horatio befriends him, and eventually discovers that he was possessed by a demon, an ancient and nearly extinct race. Unfortunately, Horatio's intrusion enables the demon to seize control of the man again, and Horatio executes him to stop the demon. It's a pretty harsh ending, and Baron doesn't really provide any cute morals. He just leaves it out there for you to think about.

The subplot with Kreed and Mars is also extremely well done, and I'm anxious to see how it all unfolds. I don't recall the specifics of this storyline either. (It's been ten years or so since I completed and read the entire Nexus run!) Another block of great issues. Can't wait for the next one.

2022 reread - the demon issue loses none of is power. Nor does Kreed's persecution, life or death battle, and surrender to Martian justice.

A nice return to form for Nexus. The one-offs that lead the volume are among Baron's best, as Nexus first gets to know a victim (#40) and then plays with a group of them (#41). What follows isn't as individually great, but shows what a complex world Baron and Rude have created, as they mix together the continuing plots of the Gravity Well, the General's Daughters, the Bowl-Shaped World, and Kreed and Sinclair's Mars Massacre. It's pretty impressive not only that all of these plots are thrown in the air, but also that they meld together seamlessly. The Kreed plot is clearly the strongest, while surprisingly the return to the Bowl-Shaped World begins to drag almost at once.

Bowl Shaped World, Ho! Sure it's goofy, but one of the joys of the series is balancing the somber themes with the consistent universe space opera with the totally gonzo stuff like Badger turning up through the exorcism of an insurance salesman and the bowl shaped world with its layers of challenge and godlike manta ray alien creator. This book is all lead up to issue 50, and its all good. Even the Loomis sisters are properly creepy in this one.
