Katie wants to be just like her teacher, Miss Aberdeen. She wants to be like the pretty stewardess in the plane, too.But how lucky that she is just herself - warm and tenderhearted Katie.Katie is brave too. Bravely she leaves home to live on Grandma Buckley's farm in Kentucky. And she is the one who takes care of thirty-seven small children in a sudden flood.Meeting Katie Kittenheart is like making a wonderful new friend.
This is the sweetest little story about a perky little girl with a tender heart who showed everyone she came in contact with how enjoyable life can be! I must have read it 20 times!
I liked reading about Katie and how positive she is and helpful. I liked how she valued following through when she said she'd do something, especially when it meant losing out on something.
I did not like the parts about secrets or threatened spankings, the book is from 1957.
I wondered why her father would be sent to Arabia for a year, that the mother went along didn't surprise me but that all three young children didn't go did.
"said the stewardess. This will be a secret between us and the cats and the snake. Promise?" pg 40
"Katie had a little secret which she did not tell." pg 67 (she caught mice to have as pets)
"The real reason was a secret. She did not wish to tell about the mice." pg 77
"Any child who does not obey instantly will be spanked!" pgs 112 & 113 (9 yr old to younger students)
"But there is nothing better than a good cry, sometimes. It clears up your feelings just like a storm clears up the air." pg 44
This was a favorite book when I was young, so I thought I would re-read it to see how it stood the test of time. I still enjoyed the story, but I couldn't help thinking that Katie ends up in the middle of way too many adventures for such a short period of time. In addition, several of these events would be impossible now; however, judged by the time the story takes place, it is quite believable and Katie is a very engaging heroine.
Super cute and sweet book of an amazing and intelligent young girl who loves helping out – especially with animals. This is a really good book, and I highly recommend it for a young audience, but as I often read young adult books, I just find this a little less exciting than many books I've read. Overall, great book, just not my personal cup of tea :)
While the story was dated and largely gender biased, there were moments of sweetness. The illustrations charmed me most of all, and I skimmed through a second time just to look at them again.
people have named this a childhood favorite that they kept on their shelf... ... And now that I've read it, I can see why. I'm not sure I'd recommend it to today's families, but I probably would have enjoyed it when it, and I, were young.... I will keep it for a reread before offering it back up on paperbackswap.
