Death Herself #1

Alice Isn't Well

Rate this book
"There are lots of demons in the sky above London. The problem is, this one came crashing down to earth."

Ten years ago, Alice Warner was attacked and disfigured by an attacker in her own home. She remembers nothing of the attack, and she has been in a psychiatric hospital ever since. When she's finally released, however, she starts working as a security guard at an abandoned shopping mall. And that's when she starts to realize that something is haunting her, keeping just one step out of sight at all times... Meanwhile, seventy years earlier, a little girl named Wendy is left orphaned after a World War 2 fighter plane crashes onto her house. Taken to a monastery, Wendy is quickly singled out by the nuns for special attention. They say she has been possessed by a demon, and that there's only one way to save her soul. Fortunately for Wendy, however, there's someone else who seems to know far more about the situation. What is the shocking connection between Alice and Wendy, reaching out across the years? Does a demon really lurk in the girl's soul? And who is Hannah, the mysterious figure who tries to help Wendy, and who seventy years later begins to make her influence felt in Alice's life too?

Alice Isn't Well is the first book in the Death Herself series, about a dark figure who arrives in the night, promising to help deal with the forces of evil whenever they appear.

I don't know how to classify this book... a dark mystery? a paranormal horror? Well... it's a interesting story but it didn't hold my attention after what's going on was revealed. I'll give it 3 stars.

A strange one this.

I'm not quite sure what kind of book I have just read. Horror?, yes. Fantasy?, yes. Thriller?, sort of. I prefer my Amy Cross stories to be dark and brooding. Although it was a reasonably enjoyable read I think I'll give the sequels a miss.

Yep, Alice isn’t well and she has good reason. I like stories where the character is considered to be not quite sane. It allows the author to do a lot with their characters.

I really liked Alice. I was sad that she questioned her own sanity but sure could see why. Wendy’s story takes place many years in the past. At first it’s sad and then it gets macabre. And Hannah is a piece of work. I think I liked how much she lived in her own skin and never doubted herself. She had a weird job and just accepted it and kept on doing it.

Their stories are told separately but then begin to merge and you finally are shown why. A solid story that I read in one sitting. And the author wrapped it up nicely while leaving it pen for more in the series. I’ll be following it.

Very cool book

This book starts off with a bang, like most books by Amy Cross. There is the story of Alice, who had the house to herself one night while her parents were out, but what happens next changes her life and causes her to be places in a mental ward. When she finally gets out she gets a job working security for an abandoned mall. But Alice starts seeing and hearing things. And she remembers a past that is not hers. Is Alice truly crazy or is it more sinister than anyone could imagine?
I am a huge fan of Amy Cross and this book is great and will keep you guessing. Definitely check it out!!!!!

I usually love Amy Cross books, but this one completely threw me & it wasn't until I'd read several chapters that I finally concocted myself I hadn't read it before....it was so The ghosts of Hexley airport all over again in places (this is why I've given it a 4). Overall great time traveling story & I'll admit once I got into it, it kept me gripped all the way till the end. Now onto the next death herself book.

Amy Cross does it again!

Amy Cross picks a character and draws you into a story that seems you are in the same room. This book was especially good and I liked the time travel that puts you in Alice's time and Wendy's. I think this is one of the better books I have read. I have 2 more free ones in my library and then it will have to be the button that says one click payment.

Wasn’t at all what I was expecting! Really enjoyed this book, so much so I just purchased the 2nd in the series. If you like thrillers and horror you’ll enjoy this book. Yes there were a few mis types (wrong characters name used once and their or the in wrong place) but easy enough to get what the author was saying or what was happening.

Very good book

This is second book I've read by Amy Cross. It's as good as the first "The Devils Cross". She has a great imagination. She writes scary stories you can't put down until you finish the book. I really enjoyed this book.

Love it

I know Mrs.Cross doesn't usually write many series, but I hope she will continue this one. It is really a cool concept. As always Cross's stories are really good. Always a good author to turn to.

An unexpected delight!

I really enjoyed the mystery, history and horror woven into this book. Without giving too much away, I hope to see more in this series as I love Amy Cross's straight talking, no nonsense new heroine.

Great story

Haven't read Amy's books in a while so it was good to pick one up again. She has tremendous talent for storytelling and I enjoyed this book basically between good and evil very much. I have the next one lined up. Thanks Amy📕👍

For such a short book,it took me a while to finish. There were bits that dragged too much, and the story felt a bit disjointed - half truly creepy horror and half lighthearted paranormal story.

Hannah is a very interesting character, so I will probably pick no.2 in the series up at some point.

Needs Better Proofreading

There were so many typos that should have been caught. However, the story was interesting enough that a grammar nerd like me was able to somewhat look past the errors.

Awesome ghost story

If I could give this a ten rating that is what I would be doing. Poor Wendy and Alice both had a horrid life thanks to a demon. But the ending is one fantastic ride

2.5

for a time youre reading between the past(wendy) and present(alice) both of them know Hannah. who is Hannah? is she a good entity or a bad one? I found this book to be a bit boring and I didn't like the direction the ending took. I will not be continuing this series.

I won't finish this book. It's well written and nice to read a book set in England, but I'm genuinely not interested in what is going to happen.

A prolific writer

I usually give Amy four stars because of editing errors and justify those stories as five star. Today I did the opposite. Excellent read.

This was one of those books that I didn't want to put down. I initially thought it was going to be an Alice in Wonderful retelling of sorts, but to my surprise and delighted it wasn't. This was a story that expanded through time and eerily disturbing in parts (in a good way). I wanted to know what was wrong with Alice all the way through.

I loved the chapters that went back into the past to London and the bombings. These were so real and so well written.

It's hard to write a review without spoiling the story so I'll keep it short and sweet and say, this is well worth the read and it will keep you turning the pages even when your eyes are falling shut.

I always enjoy this author's stories; I love the originality and imaginative content. This one is no exception.

Alice isn't well - why? This tale delves into the absurd and yet is believable, mysterious and suspenseful, with characters that range from wicked to delusional and plenty in between. I particularly liked Hannah, although I don't give spoilers so cannot say much.

A brilliant horror /fantasy /paranormal story, fast-paced and great writing style, which hooks you from beginning to end.

Recommended.
