In the wake of their first major fight, Dinah’s realized that her new bandmates are completely unprepared to keep themselves alive in a scrap…so it’s time for a training montage! (Cue the squealing guitars!) Plus: Who is Bo Maeve, and why does she hate Black Canary so much?
Brenden Fletcher is a writer who's worked on DC Comics titles including the bestselling Batgirl of Burnside, Gotham Academy, and Black Canary.
He contributed the acclaimed Flash story to the Eisner and Harvey Award winning Wednesday Comics and has recently launched a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Pink series for Boom! Studios.
A fun sequel. I definitely think I'll check the rest out, probably in trade because why not?! Though I feel the art/writing may be drawing too heavily on Fraction's Hawkeye.
The story continues as we find out more about D.D., her band mates and the mysterious people following them. Enjoyed this one more than the first, so I'm really getting interested to see where this series goes!
This issue isn't as bad as the 1st one. It has its moments. Its a tough transition from once leader of the JLA to a singer in a rock band, it's a little bit more grounded with small hints of weirdness as far as who's after them. It's not my genre, but it didn't have horrible lines like the first issue.
Issue #2 was a bit different, mostly because it was just about Black Canary teaching her band how to defend themselves and then Bo Maeve appears, and honestly I don't trust that girl for some reason. I really, really don't. Then the husband (in which I DON'T APPROVE OF) appears out of no where and attacked Dinah, even though he was in a mask and she was shocked that it was him (I was honestly looking for Oliver, but....DAMMIT OLLIE WHERE ARE YOU?)) but I enjoyed it, even though this review was short.
This issue gives us a little history of the band and a lot more information and depth about the characters that make up the band! There's even a nice two-page spread at the end that gives us a fictional interview with them all that sets a few things in place too. Not only that, but the bad guys also get some exposition and it all begins to tie together.
Fletcher has created a nice cast here and is setting up an interesting backdrop that feels more indy then like a part of the DC Universe - and that's not a bad thing! This would probably be more enjoyable as a graphic novel rather than individual issues, but the storytelling is still solid.
I liked Annie Wu's art on Marvel's Hawkeye book, but here it just seems much more sketchy and chaotic. I'm guessing this is supposed to give it an "edgier" rock and roll type feel, but sometimes I find it distracting.
Overall, a worthwhile issue that will keep me reading.
Well this was better than the last one. I think what I'm struggling with is how different Dinah is here. I know it's a comic and here are tons of alternate versions of characters but this Dinah is almost unrecognizable from the Dinah I fell in love with. It will be interesting to see where this goes - but I'm honestly getting a little tired of the comic industry reinventing all the characters to make them ~trendy (especially Batgirl's new version... which is funny because I'm reading this and the little I've read with new Babs makes me seethe).
Much better! The first issue was trying to find its footing because it's ridiculously unfamiliar to anything related to traditional Black Canary. It was a bit weird but the art was cool so I kept it on my pull list. I wish they'd just made a new character for this, but too late for that now...
Anyway. This issue is better paced and easier to follow. There's a couple amusing character interactions too. I'm starting to like the band members as well as DD. I'll keep reading.
The art for this comic might be absolutely stunning, but the writing not so much. I had far too many unanswered questions and, at its heart, "DD" just did not feel like Dinah. Besides that, the pacing was rather weird and it just didn't feel like it was really going anywhere. Riddled with cliches that don't fit the character it's supposedly about, it's a beautifully illustrated hot mess.
I'm really in love with this series. I'm getting to know the characters in a way that is quick but not rushed. The "feel" of the character matches their art and style very well. I can't wait to keep reading.
This next Installment in the series was mysteriously awesome. The band has to learn self defense. And their new singer Dinah is the one to teach them. It's hard to trust someone when you don't know their story.
The tensions are rising for the band Black Canary. Though Dinah would prefer to keep her secrets that choice is eliminated. Now she has to find a way to protect her friends/bandmates...
The art is just stunning and I love the snappy, realistic conversations!
No ha sido tan bueno como el primero pero aún así me ha encantado. Pero qué voy a decir. No puedo decir nada malo de estos cómics. Por fin Dinah tiene otra serie de cómics propia y me encanta.
Ha! It's been a LOOOONNGGG ass time since Dinah was married to Oliver Queen you Lauiver jerks. Man I love this series, the artwork is beyond perfection.
