The third leg of the series and things just got better. It might have take it's time with the story of the newly introduced characters and getting the other players into place, but that final big scene left me teary-eyed and breathless. Quite the set up for what feels like the grand finale coming up in the next book.

As may be surmised from my earlier remarks, this is not a series that can be read out of order or this book treated as a standalone.

The book opens with the introduction of Tolan the earthblood and Elethea the sunblood living quietly in a small village. He works the lord's lands even as he hides the secrets passed down by forefathers time out of mind and she is a healer and midwife. Tolan seems to have the magic touch with growing things, but he is careful not to let them suspect he is anything more than a really good farmer. The lord of the lands is acting oddly and asking questions about magical stone circles which sets him on his guard. Tolan is a widower living with his beloved son, but he and the widowed Elethea have an arrangement. Tolan wants more, but Elethea was abused by her first husband and is determined to never be in a man's power again. And then there is the fact that she is barren and knows that Tolan wants a family and more children. Thea has more than just Tolan's growing attentions to worry about as she realizes that she can wield healing magic and seems to have a connection with the sun, itself. What is happening to her?

Approaching Tolan and Elethea's quiet village are the Warriors of Destiny and their enemy, Lord Hugh. The third magical circle and the two newly emerging descendants of the gods is their destination. The Warriors seek to gain Tolan and Elethea's help to seal off the circle from the evil imprisoned in the abyss and Hugh needs the pair to use the circle to free his beloved goddess.

Tolan and Elethea aren't sure who to believe at first, but then any choice is removed and they must make a fateful decision.

This one started out a bit like the others even as it introduced a new pair and their abilities. Tolan has some knowledge that is handed down through his family, but for Thea, it is all new. Their love for each other is really never in question, but it is the past abuse and Thea's barrenness that causes her to hold him at arm's length.

The story took it's time coming to the crucial point and bringing all parties together. I loved having all the Warriors together and working together. Aislynn is proving an interesting person as stuff that was just hinted in the last book starts to be more and more apparent.

Unlike many books and series, the villain in this one is engaging in his own way. Hugh gets narration time along with the main pair and the others. His motives and thoughts allow the reader to connect even as his connection with evil keep him situated firmly in the villain camp.

The past stories had something of a similar conflict and climax. This one was going that way, but then had quite the twist at the end. It notched up the conflict and tension by a hundred times. Just wow! This is how a set up book should end. I am in a fever for the next book.

In summary, this series built and got better with each book. Love the blend of slightly spicy and intensively active fantasy and historical romance. I can definitely recommend it.

My thanks to Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

The protection of the world against evil continues in this third installment of the Stone Circles series by Terri Brisbin. In this book, we discover the Earthblood, Tolan, and the Sunblood, Elthea. It is now time for them to rise to their destiny and help in the task of preventing the evil goddess Chaela from escaping her prison.

One thing I really liked about this one is the fact that the Warriors we are introduced to are older. Tolan already has quite a bit of knowledge of the Old Ones and about his power from the stories that were passed down through the generations. The previous books had more of a New Adult feel to them, compared to this one which feels more like a straight up romance. I love both of those genres so it really doesn't make much of a difference but I did enjoy the slight change.

However, I was a little disappointed with the vision that Elthea saw. The ritual she witnessed was practically the same one that Ran saw, except this one reversed the gender of the sacrifice. I understand that they need to know how the gods were in those days and what they expected but I just think it would have had more of an effect if it were a different ritual. After that, I almost felt like I was reading the same book over, until around the eighty percent mark, then the situation became unique.

I kept asking myself why don't the other Warriors help the ones that are new to the fight? Does it have to be the new Warriors of that region that need to close or open the gateway? But we finally get to see them working together after the situation turns for the worse. It was great and something that I have been waiting for in the past couple of books.

As usual with these books, the last part was my favorite. That's when everything they have built up to and planned for goes into effect and the real action begins. I know the next book, which will probably be the last, is going to be interesting. They are heading to Ireland now and I am really excited to read Aislinn's story to find out her place in all of this.

Celtic legends blend with true love and companionship to create an entertaining read! Recommended!

**Read as a Judge in the 2017 HOLT Medallion Contest**

Took me a bit of time to get into and through this one - it’s tough to come into the middle of a story. And I had the idea that this was the conclusion, so ending on a cliffhanger wasn’t a pleasant surprise. But as a judge, that happens to me often enough; and I have to take a deep breath and try to judge the book on its own.

This Middle-Earth paranormal romance is chock full of alternate world-building. And it’s fascinating, even if I wasn’t always certain what was happening or why. (Again, coming into this series in the middle.) It was a satisfying, steamy read. The world-building was strong, as were the characters. The villain might seem over-the-top, but somehow, it works.

I was drawn into the story enough to want to read the entire series - that's a good read!

Finally some action! I was starting to lose interest in this series because the plot is so repetitive and the characters are a little flat. But the very end of this book caught my attention again, and now I'm looking forward to the release of the 4th installment in 2024. What a cliffhanger!

Set in a little village with a calm and idiotic sort of life for the habitations, the hero is pleased with his standing with the Lord of the broad property and happy with his life that he shares with his young son. His family has been charged with the protection of a secret stone circle located in the back of his land but he's ignorant of just how important that alter is. He uses his abilities to sooth the earth and encourage crops but suddenly things in his perfect little world are changing. Accompanying a strange marking that burns on his arm, the hero finds his powers growing by leaps and bounds until he himself can become one with the soil and trees around him. His Lord is also making step to uncover stones which he seems to want with a great urgency.

The heroine is also changing too. They have been lovers for some time and until now have enjoyed their affair without feeling to need to press for anything further. The heroine is a widow whose husband was an evil man who beat her and it took him some time gain her trust but now no two people have ever been closer. She loves the hero deeply and craves to be his wife in name even if her body is his in the physical but one thing holds her back. She is barren. He needs children to tend his land and she can't stomach the idea of becoming a burden to him-not to this strong and loving man who makes her feel so alive.

When she discovers a burning marker on her arm that follows suit with strong and powerful abilities to heal, she realizes that things will never be the same again. The hero is pressuring her to marry and she's finding it harder and harder to naysay him, especially once discovering he shares with her these powers. Now, with the Lord of the land sharing time with a horrible and evil souled man they seek shelter with the group come to save the world from the Goddess awakening. They give answers about who the hero and heroine are as well as inform them that the gateway the hero's family have guarded for thousands of years must never open else a vengeful Goddess destroy everything.

The hero was very willing to provide this service-until his son is kidnapped. Pained with the notion his child will be slaughtered if he doesn't obey this man and obey the gateway, the hero makes the only true decision he could. He opens the door and released the horror of an ancient into the world. Burdened by this guilt and torment is nothing, however, to knowing it was for nothing as his only child is murdered before his eyes. Lost in grief and horror, he needs the heroine more than ever to be that solid support and she's more than willing to offer it to him. Together, they must find a way to right the wrongs that have been done and repair the gateway before all is lost.

This book is very fantasy driven in regards to plot but there's enough romance to interest me. Granted the love between the hero and heroine was not really developed. It sort of came with as they've been together for some time and the love is already there and never comes into question. True, they evolved in their relationship, changing from 'lovers' to man and wife but I look for a progression in the romance. Anyway, I did like their easy and very passionate affair and the respect they had for one another. The plot line was interesting but very much like the book that came before what with the gateways and the reappearing villain. It surprised me a little how dark it turned towards the end even though it shouldn't have. Fantasy if different from my typical romance novels in that it's granted permission to turn up the angst and for things NOT to work out in fairy tale ending sort of way. The fact that the hero does indeed open the gateway despite the pleas from the other guardians not to. The fact that his son dies despite his sacrifice. And also, that things aren't roses and puppies by the conclusion. It's very much open ended and allows for a continuation of the series what with the Goddess finally managing to emerge into the world. I give it points for 'disturbing' me in a lot of ways but it's not my typically cup of tea. We'll say 3 star and call it even.

Review:

I enjoyed this third installment in the Stone Circles series.

As Blazing Earth begins, Lord Hugh de Gifford is still on his quest to free Chaela, the goddess of chaos and fire who was trapped by her fellow gods and goddesses many years ago. The Warriors of Destiny, descendants of these original ancient Celtic deities, are doing all within their powers to permanently close the gateways through which Chaela may escape. Everyone converges where the last two Warriors can be found. Tolan, an Earthblood, has heard the stories passed down through his family and has an uncanny ability to make things grow. He is the overseer of Lord Geoffrey’s lands. Elethea (Thea), the Sunblood, is known about town for her healing and midwifery talents, but she is clueless when her godly powers begin to show themselves. Tolan and Thea have an arrangement of sorts but really do love each other, and Tolan would like very much to marry Thea. However, Thea was abused by her first husband and left barren as a result of her injuries, and she cannot bring herself to accept Toran’s proposal because she knows that he would like to have more children. As they learn more about their powers from the other Warriors, their bond becomes even stronger, but they are faced with a horrible choice when Lord Hugh captures Tolan’s son Kirwyn.

Blazing Earth may be my favorite of the Stone Circle novels thus far. I felt a great affinity for Tolan and Thea and appreciated that they were already in a romantic relationship and did not get together because they were “supposed to” as Warriors. Tolan’s love for his son and Thea were endearing. Thea’s pain over her inability to bear children and subsequent feeling of not feeling deserving of Tolan’s love was heartbreaking. I am hopeful that their newfound abilities from the gods will somehow solve this problem in the next book. One can hope. Lord Hugh was delightfully evil, and he never fails to make my stomach turn at least once per book. The other Warriors were featured some in this installment, and it was exciting to see everyone come together.

Tolan was faced with an impossible, no-win choice that no parent should ever have to encounter. I do not know if I would choose differently if I found myself in the same circumstances. The repercussions of this choice led to a welcome plot change with a different outcome than the other books. This carried the story along nicely and kept me reading to find out what would happen next.

I definitely think that the Stone Circles books should be read in order and that it would be difficult to read as a standalone novel. I enjoyed my time in the thirteenth century and look forward to reading the next installment. I recommend Blazing Earth to fans of Terri Brisbin and to readers who enjoy a dollop of supernatural fantasy with their historical romantic adventures.

Tolan of Durrington understands the prudence of keeping his earth magic secret. Elethea of Amesbury follows in her mother’s footsteps by becoming the village’s healer and midwife. Will Tolan and Elethea’s magic be enough to keep the evil goddess Chaela from the world? Or will they unwittingly release evil to humankind?

Tolan of Durrington is the earthblood, a human descendant of the god Cernunnos, with the power over plants and the earth. He is the overseer of Lord Geoffrey’s farmlands. Tolan secretly uses magic to rejuvenate and revitalize the land for planting. He grows worried when Lord Geoffrey’s interest focuses on finding a particular set of standing stones. Tolan also discovers the village healer, the very woman he had been spending time with, is like him. Desperate for answers, he retreats to his farm with Elethea and seeks out the secret hidden there. Danger and unexpected allies arrive in Amesbury. The evil fireblood forces Tolan’s hand. To save his son’s life, he and Elethea must release the evil goddess Chaela from her prison.

Elethea of Amesbury is the sunblood, a human descendant of the god Belenus, with the power of the sun and healing. She is the village’s healer and midwife. Elethea vows to never marry again nor allow another man complete control over her person. She fears telling Tolan of her shameful inability to bear children. After an enigmatic symbol mysteriously appears on her arm, Elethea discovers a new ability to heal with magic. She decides to entrust her lover Tolan with her secret ability, only to learn he too is blessed with magic. Allies convince Elethea and Tolan on why they must thwart the evil fireblood’s plans on releasing Chaela. Unable to help rescue Tolan’s son from the fireblood’s grasp, she swears to share the sin of freeing Chaela into the world.

Tolan had his good points and his bad points. I like that despite knowing the extent of his bloodline and his abilities, he always behaved down-to-earth and humble. Tolan may be strong in his earth magic but he too is prone to the typical human failings. I love Tolan’s willingness to marry Elethea, regardless of her incapability of bearing him more children. I like how he never allows her fears and insecurities to remain; instead, Tolan soothed her doubts and worries in a calm, loving manner. What I admire the most about Tolan is the difficult choice he faced, even knowing his actions went against what felt right.

I love the uniqueness of Elethea’s name. There were moments when her timidity got on my nerves, yet as the story progressed, Elethea started to lose most of her docility. I like how Tolan’s love and open acceptance gave her the confidence to find her inner strength. Tolan’s acceptance of her body’s shortcomings also helps Elethea to come to terms with her defects and move forward to find happiness. Healing people and helping others, I believe, gave Elethea the will and temerity to go on after her late husband’s jealousy controlled her. I like that Elethea is clueless and unaware of her connection to the god Belenus and her bloodline. Learning her bloodline, and adapting to her new ability, aided Elethea in discovering her newfound confidence.

BLAZING EARTH is the third book in Terri Brisbin’s THE STONE CIRCLES series. I have not read the previous two books in the series, but I was able to follow the story and plot without any hang-ups. My only complaint with the book is that the hero and heroine were already a couple. I felt cheated out of witnessing the budding relationship between Tolan and Elethea.

BLAZING EARTH is a spellbinding blend of fantasy and historical. I love the fact that the author included some ancient Celtic gods I am familiar with. The druidic feel of the magic in Terri Brisbin’s mystical world riveted me, and I cannot wait to find the other books in this series.

My Review:
Blazing Earth was on an entirely different level than the previous installments of the Stone Circles series. Its more intense its more somber its more everything. Blazing Earth takes everything we've established in the previous books and turns it on its head. Honestly I really enjoyed Brisbins bravery to take such dramatic risks but it pays off in really big ways. Granted a lot of it is emotional but its all fantastic. I am glad that Brisbin wasn't afraid to go places that often landed in the shady spots and questionable areas. I really enjoyed reading Blazing Earth from beginning to end, and by itself tied me to the series in a personal way. I felt that Blazing Earth was Brisbin's best work yet, and I look forward to reading Brisbin's following installments.

Blazing Earth is the third book in the 'Stone Circles' series by Terri Brisbin. I haven't read the first 2 books and I could tell that I would have enjoyed the story more if I had read the other books first. I am gathering that in the previous books the Warriors of Destiny were introduced, all of them being endowed with a special elemental force in order to keep evil from the world. In this book we find out about two more humans becoming warriors of destiny.

Tolan is an Earthblood, he doesn't understand why, but he knows that he has the power within him to make barren lands fertile again. Many generations of his family have had the same ability, and he looks forward to his son hopefully following in his footsteps.

Elethea is the village healer. She has a special talent with growing herbs and making concoctions that help heal. Unknown to her she is a Sunblood, her powers coming from the sun. She is Tolan's love, and although they have a physical relationship, she knows she cannot marry him because she has been left barren from her previous marriage when her husband beat her so badly that she can never have children.

During one especially passionate encounter between Tolan and Elethea their powers are ignited. Powers they later find are needed to help the other warriors of destiny keep the world safe from evil. A dangerous evil woman was entombed within the Earth hundreds of years ago and there are a group of people determined to free her, and then there are the warriors who are determined to keep her captive. Tolan and Elethea are the ones who have the power to do either. The good and the evil sides are both making a journey to get to the couple first, to tell their story and to hopefully get them on their side.

Will Tolan and Elethea choose good over evil. Both sides give convincing stories, but the evil have a card up their sleeve...Tolan will need to choose between the safety of the world and it's people, or the life of a loved one. Elethea will stand by him no matter what he decides. The fate of their love and relationship is very much tethered to what Tolan chooses to do.

This book had a slow start, and it took me about 4 or 5 chapters to really get into it. I had worried that it was going to be a very long read that I wouldn't enjoy, but once the story really got going I couldn't put the book down until the very end. I was enthralled and excited by all that was going on, and the battle between good and evil was amazing. My only disappointment was that the story ends on a bit of a cliff hanger which always leaves me annoyed, especially if the next book isn't due out for a while. But that's just me, if you don't mind cliff hangers then you won't mind the way this book ends.

I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I tried to get into this. Unfortunately, I just couldn't. It wasn't my cup of tea.

As the third book in the Stone Circles series by Terri Brisbin, this book takes off immediately after Raging Sea. I highly suggest reading the first two books in this series before reading this one. I think I would have been lost otherwise.

Tolan and his family have always had a way with the earth and having prosperous crops. The magic is a family secret that has been passed down for generations, and is accompanied with a responsibility to protect their lands. Tolan's son is almost at the age where he will discover if the magic is in him as well, and Tolan is hopeful to share the family legacy with him.

In the same village, Elethea is a local healer with a specialty as a midwife. Harshly ironic, Thea cannot have any children of her own. However, she does the best she can, and loves her independent life since the death of her late husband. Tolan and Thea have an ongoing involvement at the start of this book.

The ancient fire goddess is still trying to break free of her prison, and her next possible point of entry into the world is near Tolan and Thea. Together it becomes their responsibility to close the gate so that the evil sorceress will not be unleashed upon the world.

This book felt mostly like a place holder. The romance wasn't great because the main characters were already involved before the book began. (Don't be confused however. The heat level for this was high for me. The relationship just lacked substance). The fantasy mission felt like a repeat of books one and two until the end. Tolan seemed to be the only one with anything to do. Thea just seemed so useless. The book left me feeling really down. Not what I look for when reading romances.

Despite the fact that I didn't love this book, I still am impatiently waiting for the last one. I need to know how this ends! Also I believe a reoccurring character I like will be the female lead in the last book. For the overall arc plot of the series, this story had to be told. However, I think it's the worst of the series thus far.

Initial Thoughts: I still feel a little gobsmacked from the ending. I really liked Tolan and Thea. I felt I could relate in ways to both of them. I enjoyed that their journey started with them already in a relationship. Though it is not without its obstacles, it progressed well. This novel, however, had a real different feel overall. I can look back and see the hints, but I was surprised by the turn of events in this one. I do not want to spoil anyone but I found this one to be much more somber throughout. I worry for our heroes and their plight. After the events concluding in this one, I ache to know what happens next. I'm normally a fan of Brisbin's writing, but "Blazing Earth" is a strange book. In the Stone Circles books, Brisbin writes dark, paranormal romance complete with depraved characters and a less faithful commitment to happy, tidy endings than the romance genre usually offers. This installment is slow to start. The middle of the book gave me what I've come to expect from Brisbin: a quick, light read of fierce love developing despite obstacles. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the ending for several reasons that I won't get into (no spoilers). I was left feeling no connection with any of the living characters and no desire to continue the series. All in all, it's not a terrible read, just spotty and far from Brisbin's best.

*** = I liked it.
I enjoyed the characters of Toran and Thea and appreciate that they already had a relationship prior to knowing they were part of the Warriors of Destiny. I had in my mind that this was the final book in the series, but it is not. That alone factors into making this a 3 star instead of 4 star read for me. I like that this third book broke from the mold of the prior two books, and the twists kept it interesting. This is a series that needs to be read in order.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

This is the my least favorite of the series. The main characters are very lukewarm and this feels and comes across more as a some kind of porn novel at points

(These are not standalones, FYI.) Tensions continue to build as both the Big Bad and Warriors gather their forces in prep for the final battle. Slow build romance caps off story. 3.5 stars
