Professor X's mental powers are gone after saving the X-Men from a bomb in the previous issue. What the hell is going on?

Magneto and his evil mutants are back. A new fight inside a brand new hideout: an asteroid orbiting Earth, Asteroid M.

Lots of action!

The X-men are on their own against the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants since Professor X is without his powers. Great showdown between the two teams. It’s been interesting seeing the villain Mastermind because he was never in any of the later comics. Very good issue.

The presence of Magneto and his brotherhood of evil mutants truly makes this issue as enjoyable as it was. Nonetheless, the Professor’s absence was noted. Though the hilarity of Magneto having his evil lair on an asteroid made up for it.

The X-men are keeping themselves busy while Prof X is recovering from the explosion that lost him his powers. The kids try to make everything seem normal when Jean's parents pop by unexpectedly.
Later they go to investigate a new mutant they saw on tv and discover that is the Toad, a mutant working for Magneto. Magneto's evil mutants attack and kidnap Angel and take him to Magneto's headquarters on an asteroid orbiting Earth. He tries to torture Angel into telling him where Prof X is. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver don't agree with Magneto's tactics.
Meanwhile the X-men still have the Toad and they use him to get to the asteroid and beat the bad guys and return home safely. When they go to tel Prof X what happened he tells them that he has seen everything in their thoughts. The Prof reveals that he only pretended to lose his powers so that he could see how they would behave without any of the usual supervision.

This was an interesting one. A lot of fighting. I love how the twins look out for each other. I liked that the X-men actually cooperated with one another. Also I don't find Xavier likeable at all.

What the hell is wrong with Quicksilver? Defending your sister is not a personality, find some hobbies or opinions already! :D

X-MEN #1-8 (The X-Men's First Arc)

The political and idealogical subtext present in this comic book presents perhaps the greatest argument for their inclusion in larger literary canon; Stan Lee expresses something quite touching, compassionate, and profound in a time when all three were inherently absent from comic books. With his entry into the foray, he returned the medium to the maximum potential of what it was capable of; perhaps it is this intensely skilled craftsmanship to thank for the fact he revitalized a dying medium for decades to come... because this is not purely one of the most profound comic book arcs ever written:
it is quite simply one of the most profound BOOKS ever written.

It's interesting how Stan Lee structure's these character arcs around the metaphor of school; each issue starts with a training montage, with the Professor noting a specific flaw in their combat abilities each time. Then the issue ultimately culminates in the X-Men actually having to confront that combat flaw in order to defeat the villain of that issue... and they do, which shows character growth.

In accordance with this structure, each issue of this arc is tailor made for a specific member of the X-Men; each issue focusses on the weakness of a specific member, and he/she has to confront that weakness to overcome the villain and grow as a character. The arc ultimately culminates in each member of the X-Men having addressed their own unique weakness, until they are a stronger team as a result.

The strength, however, is not just the personalization separating each X-Member... it's the leader uniting them. Xavier is a leader that brings his family together; on the other hand, Magneto is a leader that tears his family apart. This dynamic of opposing leaders is a great metaphor for opposing philosophies. The X-Men fight for the philosophy that all peoples can live together in peace, which brings them together; the Brotherhood fight for the philosophy that some people can claim superiority over others, tearing them apart. It shows the philosophy of war is weaker than the philosophy of peace.

In fact, that's really the theme of this brilliant little series. We cannot "graduate" from our weakness as a country if we do not unite under the notion we can be united, lest we be divided under the notion we should be divided.

This was terrible, oh dear.

Last issue was middling, but here we have Magneto at his worst. His powers have been reduced to parlour tricks. He needs a device to make himself more powerful to control the metal in the asteroid - despite moving entire spaceships around the earth and throwing missiles about in the first issue from miles away - all of which amounts to tossing some debris about and putting a metal sheet over Scott’s face. I don’t know if Kirby and Lee decided that Magneto was too powerful after the first issue, but here he’s an impotent duck. To take out Cyclops, he literally runs up behind him and lamps him, then throws him through an airlock. Magneto… the guy that can move anything with a magnetic field and he felt he had to actually punch Cyclops to deal with him.

Pietro and Wanda are also are their most idiotic. Pietro literally has the chance to put a stop to it all when Scott tries to talk to him, literally proclaiming he won’t because the X-Men attacked him… the guy hanging around a killer and dictator and he wonders why he’s been attacked. Likewise, Wanda, who feels she owes a debt to Magneto, seems to think her obligation is of higher importance than murder. Though she does stop Magneto, she then goes with him still, instead of realising she’s probably going to be murdered too. And it’s a shame here, because this dynamic could work easily. If Magneto showed ANY restraint, beyond being a two-dimensional villain, Wanda’s dedication would seem far more believable. If Magneto had, as he does in modern iterations, shown regret at having to kill mutants, even the X-Men, the Brotherhood would work much better. Instead, it relies on them all being morons, lead by a comical, useless villain.

The issue ends with Xavier revealing to his students that he’s an asshole. To be fair, this is something that he will do again…. More than once, haha.

The previous issue left Xavier impaired and incapable of using his mutant abilities, leading to the X-Men pondering what they should do next. But before they can decide on leadership changes, the mansion is visited by Jean Grey's parents. The first half of this issue involves a lot of humorous hijinks as the X-Men must cover for the school's lack of real amenities as work to conceal the fact that this is a training ground for honing their mutant abilities. And as all this is going on, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants are planning an attack on the X-Men.

It's an okay issue, a bit too slow paced. This is the first time we see Asteroid M, and it's also the first of many times that Xavier loses his powers/plays dead.

A fine enough issue, if not spectacular. Xavier's questionable "teaching" methods continue. Kirby's art is a highlight, but the story is not very memorable. Magneto is not seen without his helmet still, nor is any relationship to Xavier explored. Definitely a little more black and white in the conflict, though the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver seem to question their own motives. Recommended for fans of Marvel Silver Age stories and X-Men completist.

This issue is a big battle between the two factions. The first appearance of Magneto's asteroid. Very dense. The Toad trickery and the asteroid rescue almost feel like they should have been two separate issues.
