I received this book for free from the publisher in return for a review.
It's time for all the animals to go to sleep...like this.
This is a lovely bedtime book to read with kids. A touch wider and shorter than A4 in size this book is filled with thick, glossy, colourful pages. Each double page follows the same familiar pattern. There is a picture of an animal with it's baby but where these animals sit there is a half page in the book. At first there is a short half rhyme with a picture of the baby animal awake. Turn the half page and then you see the baby asleep with a goodnight message to them. The half page is so well illustrated that when you turn it, the images blend into the page. My photos will show you how this works.
Every page follows this familiar pattern and it's a joy to read for example, the first animals are rabbits. 'Yawning and dozy, twitchy and cosy. Goodnight, rabbits, like this...' Turning the half page, baby rabbit is asleep with the message 'like this.' And a speech bubble with 'Good night' Every page has a rhyme and then follows the same goodnight...like this pattern. The animals are all different and the illustrations are so lovely.
Cats, fireflies, ducks and bears are some of the animals in this book. Apart from being so beautifully illustrated the familiar words are large and easy for kids to read along together. The repetitive 'good night' hopefully leading to kids feeling sleepy too. The last page has some sparkles on it and the whole book just makes me smile every time I look at it. I love the cute illustrations and would recommend this as a great bedtime book.
I love the word choices and vibrant pictures in this book good for toddlers to kindergarteners. The repetitive phrase of "Good night. Like this." repeats on half pages with mixed medium creating a dreamy mood and calm atmosphere. The students love it as a read aloud.
Good Night Like This was released as a picture book several years ago. It is now in board book form and easily one of the greatest board books I have ever seen or read. I have heard that there will be an award starting next year given out to the best board books. Good Night Like This is certainly worthy. The color palate is gorgeous. Warm, vibrant hues of deep purple and pink. The text is perfect for the youngest listeners. Small format for easy transportation and lap reading. A must buy purchase for a new baby or toddler. I love it!
Title: Good Night Like This Author: Mary Murphy Genre: Flap Book, Bed Time Book Themes: Bed Time, Mothers, Love Opening Line: “Yawny and dozy, twitchy and cozy. Goodnight rabbits. Sleep tight…..like this.”
Brief Book Summary: From bunnies, to ducks, to fireflies, the book goes through a variety of mothers tucking their babies into bed. “good night ___ sleept tight…like this” is repeated throughout the book for each animal. The words “like this” can be found under the flap on each page where a picture of the baby is sleeping.
Professional Recommendation/Review #1 CLCD Kirkus (Kirkus Reviews, December 1, 2015) “The patterned text offers a few descriptive words in a rhyming couplet followed by a simple "good night, sleep tight" wish. A cleverly designed half-page flap then turns to show the animals sleeping "like this." http://www.clcd.com.ezaccess.librarie...
Professional Recommendation/Review #2 Kaitlyn Torres (Kindergarten Teacher) “This is a simple book and the concept isn't completely novel (though the flap variety is fun), but the artwork alone is worth the read.”
Response to Reviews: I am agree with both reviews. I think the book is cute and the flaps certainly make it a fun read. It’s a nice bed time story to read with a young child but academically there is not much too it besides the beautiful illustrations. The story is very simple but like mentioned above, the illustrations are worth the read.
Evaluation of Literary Elements: The imagery used in this story is very well done. Words like “Yawny and dozy, twitch and cozy” and “ Flitty and shiny, flashy and tiny” make the illustrations come to life. One can even envision the characters solely from the imagery provided by the text.
Consideration of Instructional Application: I think this book could be used to talk about family, traditions, and specifically bed time routines at home. If I brought this book into my classroom I would turn it into a writing activity. I would have a read aloud, group discussion, and then have students write about their own bed time routines and experiences at home.

The pictures were simplistic but so cute and colorful, and the warm, cozy coloring added to the atmosphere. Simple and repetitive, which makes for a very nice read for getting young ones to settle down for the night, and the half-pages that show the animals all curled up to sleep seem very nice for a child to turn on their own too. While it doesn't have much to offer in terms of messages or a plotline, it's not quite in the age range for that to be necessary. The word choice brings the story to life even further than the images do, and I'd highly recommend this for a story to read just before bed.
I was only one page in when I realized this book reminded me of an old favorite picture book called "Goodnight, Dinosaurs" by Judy Sierra. I was hooked right away!
I love the repetion. It's critical for early literacy.
The design is unique, with the repetion being on half-pages. It's an interesting idea I'd not seen before.
I don't love the chalk-look of the font, but that's not a huge issue.
It would make an excellent bedtime read.
Note: I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review.
An absolutely ADORABLE book about going to sleep for your little one. The book begins each page by rhyming and ending with "sleep tight," and a picture of an animal getting sleepy, and when you turn the quarter page (an interactive book), it says "like this," with a picture of the same animal sleeping. The book eventually ends by telling the reader that "it's your turn" to go to sleep. I couldn't have been happier with this book.
A wonderfully illustrated book with soft, soothing colors, and cuddly animals that sets the right tone for reading to ones child at bed time. The split pages will allow the child to turn over and see how the babies go to sleep. Such an exceptional book that I now have one headed through the post to my youngest Grandchild as a surprise gift from her Mimi and PopPop. GREAT READ for bedtime for your little one.
I love some of Murphy's other work, but this one was just boring. Maybe because there's no option for the kids to participate like there is in "Say Hello Like This," or maybe it's just because it's a bedtime book so it's trying to calm kids down? Either way it left me feeling meh. Great illustrations, though.
Such a beautiful bedtime story to share with my children. It’s time for all of the animals to go to bed & all of them say goodnight & snuggle up in different ways. Not only does it wind my children down before bed but i feel like it already encourages young children to understand that some people live differently to others just like the animals in the story.
This is a very simple book, but sweetly written with flaps that young kids would like to turn as a parent reads. The short, rhyming text is engaging. The pictures show animals awake, and then under the flap the picture shows the animals as they are when they go to bed.
A bedtime story for the youngest depicting several animals being talked to prior the illustration of them being peacefully asleep. Illustrations are very indicative of the sun going down, twilight coming, and the moon shining.
Creative and unusual rhymes but not trying too hard - just right - invoke a sense of comfort that could make this a favorite for a child and many a weary mother or father.
And the examples of all those adorable animals sleeping might be just what's needed...
Very sweet. Illustrations were cute and the flaps were entertaining. Story was easy to follow, although some of the words were hard to pronounce for my 6 year old
All the little animals get sleepy and go to bed, then you lift the flap and it says "like this" and shows them all cuddled up and asleep. At the end it's your turn to sleep. Great bedtime book.
