After being rescued from a brutal band of marauders, Ellen Hale rebuilt her life in the fortified neighborhood that became her home. But Ellen believes his story, and it’s not just because of his rugged, blond good looks and soft-spoken manner—his skills can greatly benefit their team. As the team struggles to reach the fallback, previously secure locations are overrun, and their chances of success seem remote. With the likelihood of a traitor nearly certain, and the lives of everyone she loves at risk, Ellen must figure out who to trust before the traitor—or the zombies—destroy them all.Is there a spy among the fallback team,or is there another threat lurking in the Kentucky hills?
Lori spent her early years reading books in a tree in northern West Virginia. The 1980s and 90s found her and her husband moving around the Midwest, mainly because it was easier to move than clean the apartment. After seventeen frigid years in Minnesota, she fled to coastal North Carolina in 2013. She will never leave, and if you try to make her, she will hurt you.
She has worked in public libraries, written advertising copy for wastewater treatment equipment, and managed a holistic veterinary clinic. Her current day job, conducted from her World Headquarters and Petting Zoo (her couch) is as a full-time editor for indie authors and small publishing houses.
Her dogs are a big part of her life, and she has served or held offices in Golden Retriever and Great Pyrenees rescues, a humane society, a county kennel club, and her own chapter of Therapy Dogs International.
She has been a columnist and feature writer for auto racing and pet publications, and won the Dog Writers Association of America’s Maxwell Award for a series of humor essays.
Parents of a grown son, Lori and her husband were high school sweethearts, and he manages to love her in spite of herself. Some of his duties include making sure she always has fresh coffee and safe tires, trying to teach her to use coupons, and convincing the state police to spring her from house arrest in her hotel room in time for a very important concert. That last one only happened once—so far—but she still really, really appreciates it.
Ellen's journey through the new apocalyptic world continues with her chosen family, Melissa, Rebecca, Beth. And they are dealing with a new marauder threat. The entire compound community is in danger; the new life they fought for its about to end. But what can they do? This is how the exciting adventure of book 2 in this series begins. I eagerly wait for each new installment of this story to be published. Lori Whitwam writes as if she were sitting across from you at the campfire weaving a tale that captures your complete attention. You can't stop turning the pages because you must know what happens next. Personal relationships, physical strength, perseverance, and oh yeah, ZOMBIES.....who could resist.
Fallback continues with Ellen’s tale approximately two years after the event with Quinn, which has changed her views in life and given her a new purpose. Personally, I like this new Ellen and think her growth sets a new pace to the sequel.
Although the story begins a bit slow, it makes up for it by giving us a bit more insight not only of the characters themselves, but of the Compound and how things operate from the inside. Now we begin to see a tale of post-apocalyptic survival more clearly.
A third of the way in things begin to pick up and the plot starts to unravel one chapter at a time. With every move our heroine finds herself fighting for her life and to protect the group as the zombies become more than a pest and transform into an actual problem.
Next we get to meet Tyler (Ty). I was a little apprehensive about the addition to this new character. It wasn’t clear what his role would be or if he could be trusted. Little by little he earns his way, and the sparks between Ty and Ellen soon start flying.
Ty’s role, at least in my opinion, was a welcoming addition and one that was definitely needed. The last couple of chapters surprised me. The twists the author set up for the readers was not something I saw coming, but I did enjoy how things turned out. I’m not sure if the author has planned to write another book in the series, but I hope she does. Although the ending was satisfactory, it left many open doors. I would like to see them shut one by one before I move on to another series. I’m invested enough in this series that I’d like to know what happens next. And I’d love to find out if Ellen and Ty’s relationship grows and evolves past the flirting and shy kisses.
If Book 1 was Amazing, Book 2 it's PHENOMENAL!! In The Dead Survive, we find a broken girl, in Fallback we have a powerful woman. After some very heartbreaking situations (Book 1), Ellen rebuilds herself in a fiercely warrior, she still has open wounds, but is finally comfortable in the Compound, that place that almost feels like home. So when the undead and bands of marauders became in a real menace, she joins Fallback Team Three and that's where our journey begins! Fast paced, full of action, gore, friendship, romance, second chances, heartbreak, dangerous people, and zombies, Zombies, ZOMBIES!! Do you really need more info?? If you are a fan of the genre, get a copy. If you haven't read this genre, get a copy. If you are Human, get a copy. P.S. Can't wait for Book 3

I personally really enjoyed this book, but that's because I like apocalyptic themed books so I already had an interest in the work. I grew to love Ellen as a character, unfortunately I still didn't grow to know the other characters, mostly the love interest, as I would have liked to, but I'm hoping that means there's another book and I can get to know him better. The fight scenes were on par, there wasn't too much gore (which pleases me as I just find it disgusting and distracting from the overall work) and the whole thing to me was believable. SPOILERS: the only thing I'm curious about is what happened to the marauders after they killed the informant? I know we can't know about the other teams but was another team trapped by where they sent the marauders? Or did Marcus know where the other teams were going as well? All in all I enjoyed it and I hope for another book. I guess we just wait and see.
I did not read the first book in this series, which probably accounts for a slight reason of why I had some troubles finding that connection with all of the characters in this book. However, this did not deter me from still reading and enjoying this book. I like that the author infused life in the characters and not made the zombies just a second string or the typical type of zombies.
Ellen for sure is a leader and strong female heroine. She also has sass. Some of the other readers commented that they were not feeling the love interest between Ellen and Ty. I did feel the connection. It was not in your face but one that started out slow and grew into something real. However as much as I did like this book there were times when I could get easily distracted so I was not fully 100% always invested in the story. Yet, I was always able to jump right back into the book when I did come back to it.
I enjoyed this as much as the first. Still heartbroken over end of the first one, but it was great to read how Ellen has grown stronger. Love Ty... Not sure if there is a 3rd books, I would of read it if there was.
If there ever is a zombie attack please let there be Thor looking men aka Norse god like men to keep woman company... Loved the book again I am amazed at all the great writers I have come across
I sometimes find a second book in a series will not hold up as good as the first but this one surpasses it. Still love Ellen and glad to see she has a love interest. Hoping to see more in this series.
So happy I got to continue on this creepy journey with Ellen! The writing is superb. Whitwam has an amazing style, and I can't wait to read more from her. Definitely a 5 star read.
Loved this book. The story pulls you in and keeps you interested in the fate of the characters. I didn't want it to end. I'm looking forward to the next book! Walking Dead fans this is a must read!
I really enjoyed this book. I hope there’s another book so we can get to know ty more. I understand why Quinn was introduced and his part in the first book but it don’t make it hurt any less. This was a really good zombie series.
RATING: 4/5 Stars = Recommeded Read 4 of 5 as it is 1 of a Series, which as a voracious reader drives me batty as I want to know the finally, "What Happened!?... The End"
Heads Up! This is one book within a Series of Books, so be advised you may want to start your reading of this series with the 1st book, "The Dead Survive." But, if you wish to read from 'Fallback' forward, it's not a problem and you won't be confused one bit! This was the 1st book I read in the series, so I would know. The author explains the gist of prior books utilizing new character conversation, so you do not feel confused or as if you are missing any pieces of the "How did we get in this Jam?" Yet, it is done in a way that you won't even notice, and very adeptly moves the story forward.
EXCITEMENT LEVEL: Good What a Great Book! I'm now hooked! And I'm going to go read the others in this series, because now I have to know what happens!
MORAL OF THE STORY = We shall overcome! It is always good, as a female, to see a strong female lead character that is well written. In this case, that's "Ellen", of 'Fallback', and she has a strong will, is a fighter, and although she may have been scared by her past experiences of abuse, she still remains compassionate towards others. I mention the abuse part, because women/girls who have dealt with domestic violence or any scenario where they've been the victim, can identify with this lead character (or that of her adopted little sister, Melissa). As both young women dealt with their abuse experiences in totally different ways, but they did deal with it, and they show that victims of abuse or violence can come out of the other side. Those who have been there know that it changes you forever. But, you can and do heal, and you move forward to live on, and if you are lucky, then to may be even find love again once you're ready. That's one of the things a reader will take away from this book, along with the rousingly good zombie hackings.
Well, if you are going to live in a post apocalyptic world, it's good to have friends. It's even better if you have somehow made a viable community. All you need is a lot of will power, plenty of weapons, and the determination to periodically hack, shoot, slice, and generally dismember the local living dead! But, what happens when your oasis of "safety" is threatened by some jerk that wants what you got? You know there's always one out there, and usually more than a few! (Jerks & Greedy People) That is exactly the fix that the lead character, Ellen and her adopted little sister Melissa finds themselves in within 'Fallback!" I don't want to give too much away, so you will have to read the book to find out what happens.
VIOLENCE LEVEL: Low I would rate this book in the series as having a low level of violence, at least for a post apocalyptic world. Yet somehow it was still chock o'block full of zombies to be dealt with regularly. Yeah, don't ask me how the author does it, I'm just relating what I saw!
••• REVIEWED COPY: As I am a firm believer in Ethics when Buying & Selling (Hey, I'm a consumer just like you!) Please note: In exchange for my honest review/feedback, I was provided a copy of this book, with the only constraint being, my need to post the review by the deadline date, other than that, there was absolutely no discussion of content. I think as a potential buyer, it is important that you know this, and that what I wrote, or if I gave it a thumbs up or down, was entirely up to me. My review was/has not been discussed at all with, nor reviewed by, anyone prior to my posting it, and all opinions are my own.
Fallback by Lori Whitwam is a great mixture of thrilling attack scenes with a behind-the-scenes look at how this group of survivors secures & protects its own.
We find the group on the verge of splitting into different factions after having scouted out various Fallback positions to prevent another attack by marauders looking to kill the group and steal their supplies.
Ellen is included in a group with her apocalypse-adopted sister, a few friends and others in the group, including new-to-the-fold survivor Ty, who she tries hard not to fall for but eventually gets out of her own way enough to make a connection with.
While on the road, the group encounters various road blocks (figuratively and literally) and the group pulls together to solve the problem while much of the members fight off approaching hordes. The action scenes were fantastic - thrilling and with enough gore to satisfy without overwhelming.
But as is expected during the zombie apocalypse, not everything goes as planned, and one particularly sinister event puts the entire group at risk.
My only complaint about this book (and it’s a nitpicky one at that), is the ending felt too abrupt. I couldn't help wondering about the other Fallback teams and whether they made it to their own locations. I also wondered about the marauders and the after-effects of their efforts to sabotage the survivors.
Once the group makes it to their Fallback position, the story ends. I wanted to know how the other groups fared, if they ever reunited with those who stayed behind at home base. And I couldn’t help but worry what the marauders have in store for the survivors next.
I really hope the author intends to continue the story. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and I’ll definitely go back and read the first book in the series to see how the zombie apocalypse began.
With tight writing, a kick-butt leading lady, a camaraderie between its characters and the threat of more mayhem to come, this one definitely left me wanting more.
Ellen Hale is now a fighter, after surviving repeated traumas; she is now a master with a machete and can dispatch the undead with ease. She is now a fully functioning, contributing and trustworthy member of her compound. Along with her adopted sister, Mellissa, she has built up a life for herself. So, of course a threat to their way of life is not far off. However, the threat is not zombies. The compound leader has overheard that a band of marauders is looking to take over their compound next. He asks for volunteers to move to fallback positions so not all of their people and materials will be compromised. Ellen and Mellissa join up and are chosen as assets to go. On route, the fallback team picks up a stranger, Tyler, a blacksmith with skills the team could use. Some of the team is wary, but Ellen’s first instinct is to trust him. When a traitor is discovered within the ranks, Ellen’s trust will be tested. Ellen has definitely grown by leaps and bounds in this book. Now she is a strong female fighter who is able to protect herself and be an asset to her community. I was really glad to see the logical thinking of the compound leader when trouble arrives; many times this goes by the wayside in times of panic. As the team is on the move, there is a lot more action present than in the first book. Ellen really gets to show off her new machete and survival skills. Also, the behavior of the zombies is described a little more in this book and I think that there will be some interesting things with that. Tyler is a nice addition to the team and his blacksmithing skills and a plus. I really liked how he and Ellen are moving slowly and gaining trust. I can’t wait to see where the story goes next.
This book was received for free in return for an honest review.
I LOVE zombie reads. I love them even more when they feature a strong, intellectual, female lead, who has just decided to give back just as hard as she gets.
This read was absolutely brilliant. The whole premise is similar to most zombie reads, in the sense that there was an outbreak and after the outbreak people must find a way to fight back. However, this story is different in the sense that our main character has dealt with being trampled on and pushed round by the coming of the zombie age, and now she’s decided she’s had enough. She makes the decision to stand up and start fighting back, with everything she’s got.
I really like out main lady. She was written with a great attitude, strength, power, intellect and a plethora of snarky comebacks. She has a load of depth and really responds well to all the things that are thrown at her. I often stopped to think ‘yeh, I’d be like this is I were in the Z age.’ It was easy to really latch onto her and start to like both her and what she stood for – a comeback and chance at life for people.
The pace of the story was great. It had great actions sequences, really getting you into the scene, enough that I felt I may need to start wielding my own weapons of choice. These scenes were fast, fun and exciting. We were also left with loads of time to get to know our character, just why they are where they are and how she thinks. With this blend of action and depth, I really found the read rather addicting.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I will be looking out for more by this author and highly highly recommend you check this book out, especially if you are a zombie reader.
Taking you back into Ellens world we are about a year and a half after the end of book one and there have been some major improvements in Ellens life. She is no longer the broken woman she once was and has used the death and heartache she has endured to make herslef into fighter.
I loved seeing the changes in her as she has become more sure of herself and has actually learned to protect herself instead of relying on others. She is stronger and it made her an amazing heroine to read about. She still had some progress to make, but watching her continue to grow was just one of the things I enjoyed about this novel.
We see more of the community she has become a part of and see how it is that they have managed to survive for so long. Most zombie novels usually involve a small group the is surviving together so seeing a story about 1000+ people working together to continue on was a nice change of pace.
We follow along as a new yet old thret arises and go along on the journey as they work towards their continued survival. My only wish was that the book would have been longer!!! Can't wait to see what happens next!
I enjoyed reading this fast-paced zombie romp and hope to go back and pick up the first book in the series, also. It read just fine as a stand alone, but I loved the fluidity of the prose and the voice of this story. It sounds like the first book is well-worth a read, too. I could tell from her thoughts and actions that Ellen, the heroine has matured and become more selfless since the first book and I’m interested now in reading the story that brought about such change in her.
Here we have a tight knit group of individuals who have suffered horrendous losses and must now split up in order to better defend their community and ensure their survival. Ellen describes that journey with a youthful, contemplative voice I quickly found endearing.
If you love Walking Dead you should enjoy this exciting book. I intend to read the whole series and follow the adventures of Ellen and her friends as they struggle to bring sanity back into a world ravaged by disease and plagued by barbarism.
This book was given to me in exchange for my honest review.
I've been a fan of Lori Whitwam's work for some time now, beginning with Make or Break. After enjoying Book 1, The Dead Survive, I was eager to read Fallback and I was not disappointed!
It was heartening to see Ellen's continued growth and the possibility of a new relationship with Ty. I was on the edge of my seat, chewing at my fingernails as I watched the story unfold with the informant.
I am anxious to see how Ellen and Ty's relationship continues to unfold, if it does. Also, I get excited at thinking of all the possibilities there are for future books as we share the other team's journeys to their fallback locations and beyond.
Lori's gotten everything just right, zombie action, character interaction, romance, intrigue and suspense mixed with the every day actions in the life of someone experiencing the zombie apocalypse.
Fallback is a great continuation of an epic story. It has something for everyone. Keep 'em comin!
I am a sucker for Zombie books and I found this one very enjoyable. What I liked most about Fallback is that our heroine is not the broken girl she was in the previous book. In previous book, Ellen was dependent on others to protect her. In Fallback, she has learned how to fight and has developed into a leader, rather than a follower. I do recommend reading the first book before reading this one. You really have to understand Ellen’s journey to see how far she has come. I relate to Ellen more than heroines that are butt-kickers from the start. We all like to think we would kick some butt and take names right from the start but I fear most of us would be more like Ellen. Like a loved character on my favorite television, some heroines are made not born. We must face the worst before we realize what we are capable doing. I really liked this story and look forward to the next in the series.
Fallback, the sequel to Lori Whitwam's The Dead Survive, finds Ellen focusing on moving forward. The town is working together, and the future looks as bright as it can during a zombie apocalypse. That is, of course, until they find out a group of marauders has made their walls a target. To prepare of an impending attack, the town comes up with a plan to fallback. Ellen and friends head out on cross-country trip, fighting their way through a zombie-infested country in search of safety. This is my favorite kind of zombie novel, and for good reason. A lot can happen when you're on the road, and it's thrilling to get a look at what the world has morphed into at the hands of zombies and lawlessness. If you're a fan of zombie fiction, Fallback is the right read for you. Lori Whitwam has taken it to the next level with this novel, bringing us into a world that's dangerous and thrilling all at the same time.
I really loved this book. As with book one in this series, this book was a treat that I savored until the very last word. I was so absorbed in the story that disappointment hit deep when I realized I was at the end. The author articulates her story in such a way that I immediately felt as though I was a spectator on the sidelines watching everything unfold right before me. Her characters are so well crafted that I had the notion, on several occasions, that I knew these people for real. I cannot wait to see what she will delight us with next. Hopefully a book three and if we are really lucky, several more will follow.
I loved the evolution of Ellen in this one. Life has really kicked her in the ass, but instead of sinking she kicks ass right back! I hope we get more of Ty in another book, as their relationship will be interesting to say the least. This dystopian world can shoot in so many directions, and I can't wait to see what the author does. Before this series I'd never read anything by Lori Whitwam...but I'm pretty sure she has a new fan!
Loved these books. The author did an excellent way of highlighting the characters rather than the apocalypse alone. Their struggles are brought to life and I feel it gave the books much more meaning.
This is a very solid second book in the series. Some parts where predictable. Some parts where colorful. The characters from the first book have grown and a new one has been added. It will be interesting to see where the third book will go.
I read book 1, then grab the second part. What I enjoyed most, it wasn't too goary. Just enough to let you know it was a zombie story, but with the happy ending of a brighter near future.
It wasn't bad, better than the first but not was I was hoping for or expecting. It wasn't a long read, was able to read it in an hour. It was definitely about surviving a zombie apocalypse and everything that goes with it.
