One hundred years - that is how long the Starship Solaris, has been travelling through space, its crew in search of a new home for Earth’s refugees. Twenty-one years - that is how long Cassie Sterling has been an inhabitant of the ship and now her real life is set to begin. Disappointing her parents on her University graduation day, she chooses to join The Landers, the group of soldiers and scientists assigned the dangerous task of finally finding the refugees a planet to call home. Finally she will get to leave the starship, become her own woman.
Will her first landing yield all she hopes? The discovery of a shape-shifting alien on the run from the destructive Grommets promises much, particularly for the sheltered Cassie. Will he be the key to humanity’s survival? Cassie is determined to find out everything she can about Dahl and in turn he opens her up to endless possibilities.
Content Warning This sci-fi romance short story contains mature language and content.
Against her parents’ wishes Cassie chooses a career with the highly dangerous Landers, replacing the previous Medic and Science Officer who lost their lives on a mission. Whilst out on the mission to find an inhabitable planet they encounter Dahl a shape-shifter who through his DNA helps them terraform a planet so that they might inhabit it. Cassie feels a deep connection with Dahl which she herself cannot understand. The fact that Dahl shape-shifts into the man of Cassie’s dreams before they become intimate makes the fact that she has sex with an alien a little less weird. Bear in mind that this is a short story and moves at warp speed. All in all this was a very enjoyable read which I managed to finish in under an hour, if that.
