All work and no play makes Adeline Kendrick a dull girl, so when she heads to a casino resort for a friend's bachelorette weekend, she's ready to have a good time. Until she runs into Brendan Quinn, professional fighter and the one who got away—the one her family drove away—and things take a turn for the interesting.

Running into his ex won't shake Brendan. Even if it brings up the old pain of loving her when she was only slumming. Even if she looks really good. In fact, what better way to get over the past than to take advantage of the still-sizzling chemistry running hot between them? He's there to win an MMA fight, but he won't say no to a little physical relief of a different kind.

But when the weekend is over, Adeline isn't ready to give up her second chance that easily. Brendan is still the one for her, no matter what her family thinks. Now, if only she can convince him of that…

Cute second chance story. It's not very long so it's a great book to read after ones that have a lot of emotion or angst. Brendan and Adeline were in love before Brendan broke it off. She sees him again years later and wants to get closure but that spark is still there and they resume what they once had. Adeline's family is protective and at one point took things too far but they love her and wish to see her happy so they do their best to be there for her. A sweet enjoyable read.

A Fighting Chance is a very sweet, and hot, second-chance-at love romance, and I really enjoy the characters as well as their journey. I found the ending to be a little cheesy, though, and would have liked to spend a little bit more time with Del and Brendan.

Review - (un)Conventional Bookviews

I loved how self-assured and sassy Del was from the beginning of Fighting Chance! She's at a casino hotel, where she's arrived before her girlfriends for a weekend of fun before her friend gets married. As she explores the hotel, she sees that there are MMA fights during the weekend, and she comes face to face with a huge poster of her ex-boyfriend, Brendan, and even in a photo, he affects her just as much as he did in the past. Just before leaving the poster behind, she gives it the finger, and Brendan is arriving at that moment.

A Fighting Chance is hot, and it's a short, quick read, and I think I would have liked to spend more than three days in the company of Del and Brendan. Their romance made sense, of course, since they had unresolved feelings from before, and the chemistry was definitely still there. However, they had a lot of things to talk about, and while they did address some of them, mainly her dad being against the relationship in the past. At the same time, my heart was invested, and I wanted these to characters to get a real second chance that involved more than stolen kisses and hot sex in a hotel.

If all you're looking for is a hot, believable romance, A Fighting Chance fits the bill! I guess I was hoping for a little more of what might happen after that weekend, and while I did get a little bit, I was greedy and wanted more than what I got. Written in dual points of view, first and third person past tense and lots of fantastic dialogues, the story is solid, and it's the kind of hot I enjoy.

Missing this woman had been a constant ache he'd learned to live with over the last six years - like the dull throbbing of a bum knee - but as he looked at her it flared to life. He took a step toward her, but the anger that flickered over her expression made him stop.

Brendan hadn't been her first and he hand't been her last, since she hadn't been sitting around pining for him for the last six years. But he was the one man whose touch she'd never been able to forget.

A Fighting Chance is an adult contemporary romance novella written by Shannon Stacey. I first experienced Ms. Stacey's fun writing through her down-to-earth Kowalski Family series. I love her characters and humor in that series and I just loved her writing plain and simple. Since then, Ms. Stacey has broadened her horizons through series themed with firemen, football players, and now MMA fighters. These have become pretty popular themes in romance and I can respect her decision to jump on the bandwagon but I think she left her trademark fun humor behind. I acknowledge that people grow and change, and author's writing styles evolve through their careers as well and I can accept that. As a reader devoted to just about everything Ms. Stacey writes, I keep expecting an equally humorous but moving Kowalski story to pop up in these other series but that's not fair of me. But as a consumer and loyal fan of the amazing imagination that invented the Kowalski's, that's the way it is.

Based on my personal reading experience, A Fighting Chance was just OK for me. It's a second chance romance between an MMA cage fighter and a girl whose family tried to protect her from a perceived doomed relationship with him years before. An unexpected encounter in Vegas reunites them and you can guess at the rest. It feels like a full-length storyline cut down to fit into a novella. There's a lot of character development/history missing unfortunately and I had a hard time feeling a real investment in the characters and their romance as a result. As always, I will continue to keep up-to-date on all of Ms. Stacey's new releases and will continue to read...but I will always secretly hope for a Kowalski equivalent :)

A Fighting Chance was a sweet, heartwarming and entertaining second chance love story, I really enjoyed it.

Both Adeline and Brendan were likable and relatable characters. You felt their connection from the first moment they come face to face again after so many years apart. They had amazing chemistry and I had no doubt these two belonged together.

Adeline (Del) Kendrick is looking forward to a long weekend of fun and shopping with her best friends. Arriving at the casino resort one day early, she plans to put on her new flannel PJs, order room service, and watch Netflix. Yet everything changes when she runs into Brendan Quinn, the love of her life who walked out on her six years ago.

Brendan Quinn is overcome with emotion when he runs into Del at the same casino where he is scheduled to fight. Although he left her six years ago, doing what he thought was the “right thing,” not a day passes that he doesn’t think of Del. Now that he’s found her again, he hopes maybe they can catch up, but what he doesn’t expect is to end up back in her bed.

A Fighting Chance is a delightful, fast-paced romance that relies on the couple’s previous history to tug at heartstrings and create all the warm-fuzzies. Ms. Stacey does an excellent job creating their off-page past, allowing the reader to feel connected to the couple right from the start. The alternating POVs provided insight as to how much both Del and Brendan still loved one another. Both of these things, coupled with excellent storytelling, gives this shorter-length book the rich feel of a full-length story.

Overall, I enjoyed the chemistry between Del and Brendan. Although their story is easy and things wrap up neatly, it is entertaining and heartfelt. Once again, Ms. Stacey combines all the right ingredients for a wonderful contemporary romance.

P.S. Big props to Angela James and Carina Press for putting a note in the front of the book that the story ends at about the 70% mark because of the inclusion of a long excerpt at the end. I wish more publishers did this. It made the reading experience so much more delightful!

It was a cute short novella. I love rekindled love it's one of my favorite themes. I kind of wish Del had given him a bit more hell but the flipping off his life sized poster was pretty amusing. Brendan was a total sweetheart tho and admitted to his F up and said it was the biggest mistake he ever made. I can respect that and he made it hard for her to stay mad long. I would have also liked a bit more of their past. I know how they met but that was about it. Overall, it was super cute and a very quick read. I definitely recommend this read when you are looking for something light and quick. Bonus: it’s pretty steamy as well.

Del and Brendan dated in college but he broke up with her because he felt she deserved better. Now it's 6 years later and Del is on bachelorette weekend with her two girlfriends when she runs into Brendan.

After breaking up with Del he needed to hit something and became a MMA fighter while still working with his dad. Brendan never expected to see Del again but now that he has he will do anything to stay with her.

I enjoyed this story. It was sweet and held my attention from the beginning to the end. The only issue I really had was it was short and I wanted to learn more about these two characters and to see where they ended up in the future.

It had some real cute and funny moments that had me swooning and laughing. One of my favorite parts was the drunk text messages. I thought that was a nice touch to the story.

This story had some minor sex scenes but overall the two main characters didn't spend that much time together before they ended up back together. I would have loved to have seen them together more. I mean after 6 years of them being apart I think I just expected more from them.

I liked that this story took place around Christmas and Stacey did an excellent job at describing the details of decorations that made me feel I was looking at them too.

If you love second chance at love stories I would suggest this read and it ends with a HEA on Christmas Day.

I'm not a big fan of second chance romances, but this one was cute and I was rooting for them from the start. I did like that Del was a bit salty at the start, loved her flipping off Brendan's picture and that he saw that. I was happy that Brendan wasn't stuck on himself but really humble and reached for Del the instant he was able to, even if it was just for a cup of coffee.

They had such a history it was nice for them to really talk about the past and why Brendan walked away. I think Del was quite surprised by the reason even as she was pissed. They continued to talk, which helped and weren't able to spend all their time together, which I think helped them too.

I loved how this one ended, loved the Christmas present that showed the past was firmly in the past.

I love Shannon Stacey because her stories are so familiar (because they're set where I live, in northern New England), and so low-drama. Real people working through real conflicts, in a way that is refreshingly, well, real.

However, "Fighting Chance" is not Stacey's best. I didn't connect with this one at all, probably because it's novella-length and just too short to feel invested in the characters. Del goes to a casino for a bachelorette weekend with her girlfriends, and meets up with The One Who Got Away... or rather, the guy who dumped her and broke her heart for now good reason. Brendan moonlights as an MMA fighter, and he's got a fight at the casino that same weekend. They see each other in the lobby, meet for coffee and cookies, and basically fall into bed together, old flame rekindled.

The story was just too short to have any nuanced character or plot development. Del works, but who knows what she does. She's from an upper middle class background and Brendan's blue collar, and we're told that is the source of the conflict that ruined their first relationship, but the story doesn't really give us any sense of how class issues impacted their relationship in the past, so as to get a sense of whether anything much has changed now. Del and Brendan both have families and friends, but they don't really contribute anything to the storyline except the occasional mention to move the plot along.

If you want to check out Shannon Stacey (and you should), try "Exclusively Yours," instead.

I am completely unable to stay away from second-chance love stories. I've tried, but I just can't. There's something about the moment when the hero confesses his love and apologizes that I LOVE!

And as an added bonus, in A Fighting Chance, we also have a heroine who 1. flips the bird to a poster of the hero (how can you not love that?!), and 2. totally lets him have it when they meet to talk. She tells him that she's owed an explanation, doesn't let him use excuses, and shows him all her emotions. That's rare. Usually the woman sucks it up and doesn't unleash the anger, but this one didn't, and it was great.

I am quickly becoming a huge fan of Shannon Stacey. She stays away from the cliched storylines and instead writes likable, relatable characters in engaging stories. At this point, I've listened to more of her books than I've read, but I really, really like doing both!

I'm a sucker for a second chance romance so I was excited to read A Fighting Chance by Shannon Stacey. I enjoyed what there was of this novella to me it felt a bit incomplete; I felt like we were missing a big piece of their story and while I was happy that they did get a second chance I wanted more from this story.

Adeline Kendrick is looking forward to her girl's weekend with her college roommates and is excited to celebrate her friend's upcoming marriage. She is also looking forward to a long weekend as she hasn't had a vacation in a long time the last thing she expects to do is run into Brendan Quinn the man who broke her heart and the man who is in town to apparently participate in a MMA fight, an apparently new development in his life.

There was no doubt these two had chemistry and history in spades and I very much enjoyed their intimate moments reconnecting from the sweet kisses to much more, but I would have liked to have seen a little bit about their earlier relationship to understand their strong connection. I am so NOT a fan of flashbacks, but in this case I wanted them. I loved that they were mature enough to discuss their breakup and the hurt from it and the reasoning behind it and I appreciated that Adeline (Del) confronted her father about his role in it, but I kept waiting to understand why they still felt so strongly after the years apart.

I read a lot of novellas and I enjoy them for the most part, but sometimes a couple's story needs more time, more depth and that is the case in this book. While I loved what I read, A Fighting Chance just felt unfinished to me which was a bit disappointing from an author whose work I normally enjoy.

The last thing Adeline expects when she shows up at the casino for her best friend's bachelorette weekend, is to run into the man that broke her heart years ago. Brenden is now an MMA fighter and is at the casino for a fighting event that he's in. When he sees Adeline, he knows he needs to talk to her. They both still have feelings for each other and the chemistry is still off the charts, but they aren't sure if they can make it work this time or if it's worth trying again.

I loved this one! It was so refreshing to have a female MC that has a backbone speaks her mind. She had a lot of attitude and I loved it! Brenden was a big sweetheart, even if he did make some pretty dumb decisions. I loved that the parents acknowledged their mistakes and tried to make it right. Great, quick second chance romance !

this is a short second chance at love romance. this story was probably too short to really get a chance at knowing or really liking the characters. Del and Brennan were in love but he broke her heart because he let her family convince him that they were too different and she would be better off without him. They meet up 6 years later and pretty much everything is erased. I thought Del folded too easy. she was correct when she said that he loved her enough to leave but not enough to fight for her. He never gave her a chance to express her wishes. I thought she was going to make him work harder. Especially after seeing her reaction upon seeing his poster. A longer story would have been better

I am definitely becoming a fan of Shannon Stacey and find myself looking forward to reading her books.

This one was no exception.

This is a second chance love story involving a part-time fighter and a woman he left years before.

It was a good story in that Del was a strong woman and Brendan was sweet and good and the characters were well developed. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Truthfully I'm pretty shocked how much I loved this one. Usually these short novellas leave me wanting to know the characters better but this one gave me everything. I loved how they dealt with the past that was painful and ugly without all the angst and bitterness some books have. This story is sweet and sexy and will definitely leave you smiling. I highly recommend it.

I loved Brendan and his smart-a**ery, "Brendan arched an eyebrow at her . “There’s probably a standard for how many times you’ve been naked with a person before you stop asking if you can ask a personal question . I don’t know what it is, but I’m pretty sure we’ve blown by it.” I love second chance romance books and Del and Bendan had quite the chemistry.

Love this story of growth and love. Brendan always loved Del and has the ink to prove it. But he left her behind not believing in himself after talking to Del's father not saying why. Now a MMA fighter he meets her again but can he make thing right after all this time? Will he fight his fears and believe? The chemistry is still there after all

A nice quick and enoyable read within the reunion romance trope and a bit of MMA thrown in. I really liked the main couple, the secondary characters, the romance, the setting the sexy bits and Stacey's clean, crisp writing.

A good short story that feels complete. A second chance romance, we got filled in on what happened six years ago. Del's dad was really interfering, but he was just being a typical daddy looking out for his little girl. He was an insecure young man who really didn't have much to offer Del other than his love. Her daddy's defence that if Brandon had truly loved Del, his little speech wouldn't have frightened him off.

On the contrary, I think it took a lot of love and courage for Brandon to leave Del, hoping she'd have a better life. She continued to date, while it was implied he did not.

Brandon was a sweet hero!

The way Del's parents and family tried to make amends was terribly funny and touching though; her dad totally redeemed himself in my opinion.

Ugh I hate people breaking up without telling the other person why and especially because they think theyre not good enough money wise. Which he did. It’s so selfish and horrible. Just a declaration that money is more important than their relationship. Anyway, I like that she was very annoyed at him about it. Other than that it was sweet. And as annoying as her dad was he was right when he said the guy shouldnt have just given up on her after one conversation with her dad.

Second chance romances are not usually my thing, but this ended up being really sweet.

There is smut but it's pretty short, and vanilla. Maybe it's the degenerate in me but I would have given this 5 stars with each of smut scenes was more fleshed out and graphic.
