It’s only upon reading this fairy tale as an adult that I’ve realised how nuts it is. It’s almost two stories in one, pretty cool.

This classic tale follows a brother and sister, abandoned, deep within a forest by their wicked mother. The pair navigate being alone and encountering an evil witch, living within a beautiful gingerbread house. This story works with children of all ages, as it can be told in many different ways. The story's lesson, which emphasises the value of not trusting strangers, even if they seem kind, is still relevant in today's modern world.

Reflection: This is a wonderful retelling of the classic fairy tale. This can be disturbing to younger children because it deals with abandonment and a witch.

The decision to abandon the kids in the woods because of famine is absolutely disturbing. But this is not something you’d notice when you read it as a kid.

Not sure if this is the right edition, but I read this children’s classic a couple of times in childhood. Reckon the last time would’ve been when I was eight or nine, circa 1983-4.

A must for all youngsters!
