In a weird turn of domesticity (last week it was canning) I've decided to try to use the bread machine someone gave us as a wedding gift and that I've never used.

Okay, the desire is really coming from the Amish bread I bought at the farmer's market last week that was so f'ing good it's made regular bread look like bark. I WILL figure out how they made that!

Update (2011): I love the french bread recipe in this book, it's best if you let the machine do the dough, punch it down and let it rise again outside of the machine, punch it down and shape it to rise into a french bread loaf (or only do one punch down). Throw three ice cubes in immediately with the bread and it gives it a good crisp outer layer. Yum.

Update (2012): This is STILL my go-to french bread recipe. It turns out great everytime! I use the bread machine to make the dough and finish it in the oven.

This is one of my go-to books for baking and I wouldn't be without it. When I first got my bread maker I was using the manufacturer's recipe book but wasn't impressed with the results, but I got this book and have never looked back. I use it a lot for basic loaves, naan brad and pitta bread, and also it makes a perfect hot cross bun dough for Easter.
