A very funny story about how one boys interpretation of art causes havoc for his mother. Does introduces key themes in art, such as 'movement', 'texture'.

Cute and funny. I would hope to never wake up to the masterpiece at the end of this story in my home. Don’t want to give my sons any ideas hahaha.

This book shares with children the many different forms of art, from nature and colours to movement, textures and shapes. It also shows children that an idea can come from anything that inspires them, whether that be a carrot on their plate or a cracked mirror on the wall. The story itself is very comical as Mum does not always appreciate everywhere her son creates his art. Great book!

This is a wonderfully humorous picturebook! It is about a young boy who cannot stop finding inspiration to create beautiful pieces of art.
Each illustration has intricate details you notice when you read through; with your eyes focusing on something new each time. There is so much on each page to keep children engaged, and with the humour, it is guaranteed to get some chuckles.
I would share this book with Key Stage 1 Children and can be used to explore other forms of inspirations for creating art work.
A great book!

With the most exquisite final double-page spread that had me both gasp and laugh out loud, Altés celebration of one boy's talent and adoration for painting and creativity is as funny as it is painful (if you're a parent). Our protagonist, who opens the story by deftly penciling himself a Dali-esque moustache, explains how he adores art in all forms. What he finds difficult though, is that his mother doesn't see the world in the same way he does.
A beautiful and impeccably humorous account of one boy's passion and one parent's slow decent into a loss of sanity and she tries to manage it, this is a wonderful, incredibly well-mastered picturebook which does all the things I want it to do. It is an ode to vibrancy and spontaneity of art but also to the tolerance and patience of those parents who support their child's passions.

Poor Mum's idea of art is to be well made-up, and then ready for the day - an organised, clean and managed day. Her son's days, however, are filled by creating; drawing, painting, making and constructing. 'Everywhere I look I see art', he says and that's because everywhere you look there is art.
This book is truly an inspiration and appreciation for art; reasons to do it, love it and know about it. I love the hint at role reversal between the Mum and boy, he wonders at one point if he hasn't given his Mum enough attention because she reacts so strangely to his latest project! He decides to pull out all the stops and create an amazing piece of art for her...transforming the house while she sleeps. The last page is unbelievable, he certainly surpasses himself and Mum will surely be left … in pieces!

I love the way kids create something new and see it as an incredible thing. In their eyes, all the things they make are special and pretty. I hope I could look with my kids, see what they see, and let them create on their own.

Title: I am an artist
Author: Marta Altés

Opening line/sentence (type directly from text): “I am an artist”
Brief Book Summary (2-3 sentences in your own words):
In the book, I am an artist by Marta Altés a little boy expresses his love for art by creating projects with house hold items. For example, the little boy broke the bathroom mirror and said he had created a multiple self portrait. This book has some humor to it because the little boy thinks he is creating art while his mother believes he is destroying the house.

According to a book review written by creativeinterviews.com, I am an artist by Marta Altés is a fantastic book to read to children learning about shapes, colors, and art. Within this review it is explained that Marta’s book has beautiful detailed illustrations. In another review written by northsomersetteachersbookaward.com, it is explained that this book encourages humor through its illustrations and discussion on wether or not the little boy is being disobedient or proud of the art work he has done.
Tell Me Framework (4 sentences in your own words):

Puzzle(s): I was not puzzled by anything.
Consideration of Instructional Application (3-4 sentences in your own words):
This book would be great to read to students right before an art project. The little boy in the story expresses that anything can become art. I would hope that this book encourages students not be afraid to get a little bit messy during art class or projects.

I've done a few virtual readings of this book to grades 1 to 3. I always tell kids to be curious about the world around them, listen, and ask questions. This book does a really good job of showing how two people can look at the same thing and yet see something entirely different. (I'm not talking about the colour of a dress on Facebook). The artist in this story clearly sees many things differently and explores the world through a different lens.

The kids and I also talk about how this young artist doesn't need a paint brush, or paint for that matter. His canvas and tools are everywhere. Another little nugget that I draw from this book—I regularly read to kids in a school where trauma is prevalent. We use this book to discuss emotions and how we can use our "downstairs brains" to calm our "upstairs brains."

Much like 'The Dot', this book promotes the idea of a creative curriculum and the ethos that every child is an artist. Children would be invited to plan and create their own pieces of art using any kind of material, colours, style, texture and shape. These would be displayed in a class exhibition titled 'I am an Artist', complete with cards underneath written by the artists to explain their artwork and its title. It would show the class how much both the teacher and their grown ups, value their creative talents and abilities; showcasing their artistic possibilities.

I like how the concept of Art is shown to be whatever you want it to be, for example the differences between the Mum and her makeup 'art' and the child's perspective of placing colourful plants in the fridge!

When creativity strikes, a child can turn anything into an artwork and every surface becomes a canvas. What I see as a pile of mess is a spaceship to my kids. This book captures the creative thinking of a young kid and how he expresses this at home. As a parent, you might have encountered some of these "works of art". Crossing fingers, not all of them! This book is fun to read with young children who are in the midst of their creative explosion. Simple texts with quirky illustrations, Marta Alte, author and illustrator, celebrates the artist in every child.

A lovely book that not only promotes art but also shows that there are many different forms of art and each person can find what they like best. The little boy in the story has a very different idea of art to his mum which doesn't always please her. The end pages are funny and I can image children would enjoy them. I think this would be a nice book to read to KS1 children before an art unit allowing them to think about and then explore different mediums for using in art and what they can create with these different processes.
