Janice Maynard came to the writing life early! When her third grade short story, “The Princess and the Robbers”, won a red ribbon in a school arts fair, Janice was hooked. She followed up that early success with a more commercial piece in the sixth grade… “Why My Mom Loves To Drink Coke”. No advance for that one, but she won a six-pack of Coke… remember those great little bottles?

In junior high Janice began circulating her work to a wider audience. A dozen or so notebook pages stapled together made the rounds in some particularly boring classes, with the riveting tales carefully hidden behind textbooks.

High school meant the big time… editor of the school newspaper, the Maroon and White. Janice used her insightful editorials to delve into such meaty subjects as “locker room odor” and “why we need two-ply tissue in the student bathrooms”.

College brought lots of writing, but very little of it creative… four years later, Janice stepped into the adult world as a fully certified elementary teacher.

Despite motherhood, full-time employment, and keeping up with an “always into something” husband, Janice never lost her love of writing or the desire to be published. In 1996 she realized her long-time dream when Kensington Publishing bought her first book, Sweetheart. That exciting moment was followed by the sales of two more books in the Precious Gem line.

In the fall of 2002, Janice left the classroom to pursue writing full-time.

#nevermore

Case Baxter has a real problem trusting women. Years ago he fell in love with and married one of his employees. When he discovered she was a gold-digger, only with him for his money and what she could get from him, it stung him badly and severely bruised his confidence and judgement. He was so sure she loved him...but she didn’t. He couldn’t believe she had pulled the wool over his eyes and he has never trusted a woman since nor has he allowed one to enter him home.

Now that he has taken upon the position of the president of the Texas Cattleman’s Club and running his prosperous and busy ranch, he needed a housekeeper. When he answers his door for the meeting with a housekeeping service he is shocked to see a red-headed beauty.

Mellie has big plans for her business and expansion. Having Case Baxter as a client, whom she could ask to give recommendations, would certainly boost her business. He gives her the job but regrets it as he is physically drawn to her so he does his best to be gone before she arrives and not return until she’s gone. When Case chooses to believe untruths about her he treats her terribly and says unforgivable things. Can he dig himself out of this monumental mistake he’s made?

This one took a little while to get in to. I was a bit put off by Case, he was just a little to intense for me. In the end I enjoyed it.

COURTING THE COWBOY BOSS

As new president of the Texas Cattleman's Club, Case Baxter has his hands full. He needs a housekeeper, but he's been burned before by gold-digging employees. Still, when fiery redhead Melinda Winslow shows up, his attraction is undeniable.

What a great book, such romance and excitement of what will or will not happen. I could not put the book down, I wanted to find out if Case and Melinda would make it as a couple and be together as they both have had hurtful relationships in the past.

Case knew that taking on the presidency of the Texas Cattle Club would add extra work to his plate so hiring help around the house is exactly what he needs. What he wasn't expecting was Mellie. Mellie has worked hard to build her cleaning business and the chance to work for Case is the boost she needs but neither can deny the attraction. Will either of them be able to walk away from the possibility when everything seems to be pulling them apart? A great quick read with a fun novella included.

Landowner and the Hired Help

Standalone, but enriched by reading the volumes in order. The story is lifted by its older main characters, and grounded plot. The central conflict, however, falls on the weaker side, and issues that could have been plumbed, are simply addressed.

A cute, easy, quick read. The characters were engaging. The story was good but the romance seemed a little rushed at times.

Very good start to the new series. Case has just been elected as the new president of the TCC and is feeling a bit overwhelmed by everything he has to do. He has a busy ranch, his investments to track, and now the TCC. Unfortunately, his house falls at the bottom of the list and it is beginning to show. He needs to hire a housekeeper to replace the one who retired.

Case is a very private person who has trust issues. Long ago he had fallen in love and married an employee, who turned out to be interested only in his money. Since then he has kept his liaisons superficial, and women are not invited to his home. Mellie's company comes highly recommended, so he decides to take a chance. He doesn't expect his new housekeeper to be a beautiful redhead who piques his interest.

Mellie has devoted all her time and energy to her business, with big plans for eventual expansion. Having a client like Case would be an excellent advertisement. The last thing she needs to do is fall for a man who is way out of her league, but she can't deny that he tempts her.

I loved the relationship that developed between Case and Mellie. There were sparks from the beginning, but not all of them were good. Case was kind of obnoxious with his attitude about his privacy, and sort of put his foot in it when he asked his friend the sheriff about her. I loved seeing her stand up to him and let him know exactly how she felt. It also added to the sparks of attraction he felt for her. They came to a cautious truce over the next few days, though Case had a disconcerting way of flirting with Mellie that left her off balance.

Things got really interesting when she arrived one day to discover Case down with a bad case of flu. It was pretty amusing to see her try to help him while attempting to maintain her distance from him. A feverish Case was pretty funny, as was his conversation with his doctor friend when he started to recover. Mellie had some pretty interesting conversations with herself as she was caring for him. It really broke the ice between them, and as he was recovering they spent a lot of time together. Case really started laying on the flirtatiousness, determined to get her into bed with him, and Mellie was finding it harder to resist him. The night of his TCC party finally brought them together, but not without some later doubts on her part. She's afraid that she's falling in love with him and that she'll end up with a broken heart. The night's problems are capped by the appearance of Mellie's father.

Mellie's father is an alcoholic, a gambler and a man who takes advantage of Mellie's love for him. We see several instances of the way he treats her, and it isn't pretty. There's definitely a feeling that he is going to find a way to ruin anything she might have with Case, and that feeling turns out to be accurate. His actions that night are really terrible and leave Mellie caught in the middle. But it gets even worse after he sobers up.

In the prequel, Reclaimed by the Rancher (reviewed at the end), there is an oil company that is buying up land all around Royal. In this book, Mellie's father, whose company owns properties around Royal (including the land on which the TCC stands) suddenly uses his position to threaten Case and the TCC. He also claims that Mellie knows and approves of what he is doing. This plays into Case's fears about being used, and he makes a real ass out of himself, saying some really terrible things to Mellie. Though devastated and heartbroken by his attitude, I loved that she doesn't just fall apart. Mellie takes action, and I loved what she did. It was really satisfying to see Case, once he got over his own feelings of betrayal, to realize what he had done. Then "all" he has to do is find a way to apologize and see if he has succeeded in ruining everything. I loved his big moment and seeing him properly grovel in front of her. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series and finding out what the story behind the land grab is.

I really enjoyed this book. I got two books for the price of one. Both books was a fun way to pass away a Sunday afternoon. In Courting the Cowboy boss, Cass had just been elected as the new president of the Texas Cattleman's Club. He is a bit over whelmed. He is a man that loves his privacy. He has never brought a lady into his home since his divorce. He knows he can't do it all. So he breaks down and hires a cleaning company. He was a little shocked when Mellie the owner of the company shows up to clean his home. Millie has worked hard devoting all her time, and energy into getting her business up and running. She has not dated in years.

I think both Mellie, and Case are a little shocked at the chemistry the two shares. It was sweet to see the friendship, and trust that developed between these two very private people.

Mellie's father is the town drunk. He is a alcoholic. She knows he needs help. She begs and pleads with him. Her father always promise to be better. It was touching and made my heart sad at what her father put her through. My parents were both alcoholic's, and I know how she felt. She was ashamed of her father, even tho she loved him. When you have a family member like that, you don't want anyone to know. It forces you to become a private person.

All in all, this was a great book.

2 excellent reads by two excellent authors.
Courting the Cowboy boss by Janice Maynard tells the story of Case who has been burned in the past by gold-diggers, but now needs a housekeeper as he is the new president of the Texas Cattle'mans Club. Melinda runs the local house cleaning service and when these two meet sparks fly. Brilliant as a stand alone but looking forward to future Texas Cattleman Club book as there is always a side story that keeps you wanting to know more.

Pregnant with the Rancher's Baby by Kathie Denosky tells the story of Nate who is a Bull rider on the rodeo circuit and has been having an on off affair with Jessica. When Jessica shows up to tell Nate that she is pregnant Nate proposes and due to the past history of their relationship Jessica turns him down but agrees to a month trial to see if he can prove himself to her.

Loved both books.

Courting The Cowboy Boss by Janice Maynard is another wonderful read.

Case Baxter, new president of the Texas Cattleman’s Club can handle the job just fine. Getting his home in shape is another matter. He sets out to hire a housekeeper but is leery of being burned by the help. Case agrees to give Mellie Winslow a trial run.

Melinda (Mellie) Winslow owner of Keep N Clean agrees to personally handle Case’s cleaning needs. She figures it will be a plumb in getting her business more clients. Mellie was expecting to find her newest client so attractive.

After Case and Mellie renegotiate her contract it seems to be smooth sailing. They give into their attraction but Mellie loose of a father may cause more harm then good.

Courting The Cowboy Boss is a gem and another winner by Janice Maynard.

D2409 Nov2015 TCC: Lies and Lullabies #1 Case Baxter learned a hard lesson after he married one of his employees. He's vowed never to get involved with another one. He's been elected as the new president of the Texas Cattleman's Club. His home needs cleaning, his housekeeper has retired. Melinda owns a cleaning company, she could use the business that doing Case's house would generate.
Her father is a big problem, threatening to raise the rents of the artists' shops in the buildings he owns. He only comes around when he needs money. Melinda steps in when he threaten to sell the property. There's been someone buying a lot up property since the tornado went through and destroyed buildings and the drought has ranchers selling out.

This was my first book by Janice Maynard. It took me a few chapters to get into this story, but once I did it was enjoyable. The storyline is straight-forward, and while I liked the characters for the most part, there were a few times where I thought both characters overreacted or acted childish. This is a bit annoying considering Mellie was 29 and Case was 36. The progression of their relationship also felt kind of fast given the limited amount of time they actually spent in each other's company. Still, it was a cute read.
