Our Mother Daughter Book Club used this resource extensively when we formed our Mother/Daughter Book Club. I highly recommend it and all the books in it!
A great list of books (for those of us who like lists and books) assembled to teach kids about people of different backgrounds. It includes a great deal of historical fiction, books about other cultures, and books about different social classes. These are books to encourage kids to look outside themselves. It should really be titled Books for Kids to Grow On. Good summaries, ideas for discussion and activity suggestions. It doesn't just give all the great books that you already know about (though those are in here, too)!
Well-written approach to sharing the reading experience with young girls (with the added benefit of gaining insight into their thoughts and life). This inspiring book encourages parents to use fiction as a way to open lines of communication with our daughters. Implicit in this reading list is the idea that we underestimate our children. Ms. Dodson asserts that reading and discussing books that explore various "issues" is a great way to guide young girls without lecturing.
AND, as an avid reader, I cannot imagine a better way to communicate with my daughters than by reading together!
A must have for moms and girls who love to read together. The list is full of all different kinds of books that the girls and moms in our book club have really loved.
I haven't read every page of this books, but it would be a great book to use in a girls book study group! Interactive questions and offers some good recommendations!
Our Mother-Daughter Book Club LOVED the book recommendations. We were together as a book club from 4th grade through middle school -- 5 years. Many thanks to Shireen and her daughters for this book and their Mother-Daughter Book Club book.
Now, April 2025, I'm re-reading all those wonderful books plus others by the same authors, remembering reading them aloud to my daughter. We have great memories of the stories and the new (often British) vocabulary.
