She'd promised never to be like her mother. One man stands in the way of that promise. Renee Winters has the voice and the face of an angel. She’s the worship leader at her church, runs the Brides for Christ program for young teenage girls, and is the chaste “bride” modeling the gowns for the bridal shop she works at. The problem? It’s all a lie. As a child, Renee's alcoholic mother paraded a slew of men in and out their home. Renee vowed she would never turn out like her, but one broken night, she ran from the nightmare of her home and into the arms of handsome bad-boy Ian McKnight. She tries to erase her moment of weakness with years of faithful service. Yet each time she stands before young girls, preaching about the beauty of remaining pure, she is painfully aware of her broken vows. Then Ian returns—a wounded soldier, a recovering alcoholic, and no stranger to broken vows. Ian knows the truth, and Renee avoids him, unsure if she can trust him—or herself. When the bridal shop hires him to create a website, she realizes she must face the truth. With his camera pointed in her direction, he tries to capture the real Renee, the one behind the veil of lies. Will Ian tempt Renee to break her promises again, or will he help her understand the true nature of her vows?

When Michelle Lynn Brown was a teenager, her mother used to take her to used books stores at least once a month. It was there she fell in love with the written word. As a writer, she uses this passion to share with others the joy of having a personal and intimate relationship with Christ.

She is a housewife, mother of three, military spouse, writer, blogger, hopeless romantic, and a cuddly lap for one very large cat. She was born in Dayton, Ohio, but raised in El Paso, Texas. And since she married her husband, the military has blessed her with the opportunity to live in many locations, from Germany to Pennsylvania, where she now resides.

Like the flawed characters that grace her books, she has had many stumbles and struggles in her life. God’s grace and mercy through these trials have kept her on her knees. It is from this humble position that she seeks to minister through her writing – not as someone who has it all figured out, but just someone who has figured out how wonderful and awesome God is.

So this book may be a bit cheesy, and very predictable. And yes, the plot and characters are not all that complicated. This is certainly not an intricate book, it's an easy and quick read. But here is the thing, I liked this book. I liked it a whole lot. The characters may not be that deep but they did mature. They also endeared themselves to me. The plot doesn't have many twists and it doesn't contain many layers, but even so, the story spoke to my heart. Yes, I liked the characters of Ian and Renee a whole lot. And, I very much liked the story, the entire story. I am a satisfied reader.

Veils and Vows is an engaging romance novel in Reconciled and Redeemed series by Michelle Lynn Brown. Although part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand-alone story. Renee and Ian have been friends since their teenage years, both having struggled with family lives that were far from ideal. Can one night in their past keep them from each other forever? Will Renee be able to keep the vow she made? Can Ian help lift the veils of guilt and fear from his friend's heart? In the light of Christian values, the author realistically deals with some very real and raw issues of human life--alcoholism, promiscuous lifestyle, and premarital sex. Readers can relate well to the characters as they deal with guilt, brokenness, forgiveness, and restoration. I listened to the audiobook version of this book. Leonor A. Woodworth does an excellent job narrating the story and bringing the characters to life, making for an enjoyable listening experience. I received a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a review and the opinions are my own.

Isn't wonderful to know that we don't have to be perfect to be forgiven. Over and over in this sweet romance, the author, reminds us of this blessed truth. God's love goes far deeper than our capabilities of being a 'good' person. Not only did Michelle bring that truth out, but she also brought out God's truth on love and intimate relationships between man and woman, husband and wife. She explained the nature and the special gift that God granted us by needing, wanting and sharing love. Kudos to Michelle for not only giving me a great read but one that reflects the beauty of the Father's love. This was my first book by Michelle Lynn Brown, but it will not be my last.

Veils and Vows
: Michelle Lynn Brown

This is a sweet clean story of love and God's redeeming power. Do people's past dictate their future, or is forgiveness and love enough. A young woman meets the young man she loved as a teen. Can they overcome the one mistake in their past that could keep them apart forever?

The narration was well done. The characters were well portrayed. Leonor A Woodworth performs with a beautiful spirit that fits so well with the story.

Forgiving the Past

Ian and Renee battle their past mistakes. No one can move on in life if they keep dredging up their past. Living in the shadows of parents that were less than good role models will only pull them down farther. None are without failures and sins, but in Christ we can be forgiven. This book has a clear message of salvation, forgiveness, God's unconditional love, and faithful, godly friends who stick closer than a brother. I enjoyed this book and had to force myself to put it down. I fully recommend this book.

Although I thought Renee took far too long to see the truth and focus on her commitment to God rather than her own standards, I enjoyed the story. The book was in need of more extensive editing--for example conscious was used for conscience repeatedly.

I do appreciate that the book is a stand-alone even though it is part of a series.

A great story of redemption!

This is a story of Renee and Ian who go through years of suffering the consequences of their parents' and their own bad choices and sins. But God! They both are found and redeemed by the Lord and then are blessed to have the right kind of love and relationship. What a wonderful story of the Lord's Grace and redemption! A sweet happily ever after.

Veils and Vows

Each book has dealt with offsprings of alcoholics or drug users dealing to overcome their past to move into their future. To go forward you sometimes have to go back to the root cause to forgive them to accept who you are and can be.

Michelle Lynn Brown deals with something the world does not even blink an eye over anymore, premarital sex and the sin it is that separates a person from God's love and forgiveness.

Renee Winters has lived under the shadow of her mother's sinful life starting with her own conception. When her mother's foster parents and friends turned their backs on Renee's mother's pregnancy, she turned from God to alcohol and prostitution to support herself and her baby, Renee. Now eighteen, Renee, struggles to keep herself pure and acceptable to God. The only person who does not have issues with her, is Ian McKnight. Ian has a reputation of being a 'Bad' boy. But he has never treated Renee with anything but respect in fact he calls her his beautiful angel.
After having been nearly sexually assaulted by one of her mother's johns, Renee seeks comfort from the only one who can relate to what she is going through, Ian.
Only comfort turns to something they were not ready to handle. Ian realizes this as he watches Renee sleeping. Ian leaves, running away to army to prevent him from witnessing the hatred he knew in his heart Renee would have when she woke and had time to allow things to sink in of what they had done. Renee awakes to find Ian gone and her mother's words comes home to haunt her, that Renee was just like her and all men were after just one thing. Renee vows to God this will never happen again and she would never become her mother.
Eight years later, Renee is the worship leader, and leader of their Church group, 'Brides for Christ'. In Renee's eyes, she has kept her vow to God and is a good Christian woman living for God. However Christ uses her past to show Renee that she is trying to be a Christian on her own strength instead of surrendering all of her life and not just part of it for His forgiveness and healing by bringing Ian McKnight back into her life.
Now Renee must decide how to deal with the hidden sins of her past or continue to live in denial and the affection of a good Christian man, Elliot.

Ian and Tracy made a mistake when they were teenagers that have kept them apart for years.

Neither Tracy or Ian want to end up like their parents. Tracy hides and try to handle her attraction to Ian without relying on God to help. They both need to learn forgiveness, healing and rest in God's help or they won't have a future. Tracy has a warped understanding of a right relationship with a man based on her mother's life. This is is precious story and highly recommend to young girls trying to remain pure until God brings His choice of a man into her life.

This was my third venture into Brown's writing. While I continue to be non-plussed by some of her plot development, I appreciated the realistic portrayal of the main character. Renee was flawed, but striving for a better path. She was presented as being worn out from trying to be good enough to earn God's grace. In contrast, Ian, while sharing a similarly fallen history, has found the freedom of forgiveness and lives in the peace of a life lived out of victory. The journey these two face is well-written, and the resolution was satisfying and complete.

I really enjoyed this third series of the book. I liked Ian's character from the second book and his struggles so it was great to know he had his own story. Plus, the tension between him and Renee was great. I like the sweetness of it with the bridal shop and photography and the double meaning using the veils. All in all a satisfying ending to the series.

Unforgotten Mistakes

Much like Renee, we have all tried to live down a mistake from our youth. But, as Renee finally learned, we have to let go and let God take control. No matter how hard you try to do the right things, if you're still trying to control the outcome, nothing will end right. Beautifully written Christian romance which I highly recommend!

Great redemption story

I live how the author addresses a hard topic in Avery real, practical, biblical way. Almost anyone can relate to and benefit from being reminded that God forgives everything and offers healing from everything.

A great reminder to believers

When we choose to follow Christ, we surrender our will to that of His. It is a lesson many do not understand but is essential to our walk.
