With one powerful sneeze, Mijo is finally able to grow the beard of his dreams! It's handsome, luxurious, and... verde. But Ma-Mee doesn't agree. She says the beard is gross and it's got to go! Can Mijo find a way to convince her that his barba should stay on his face? Or will Ma-Mee put her foot down and order him to... shave?
I picked up Booger Beard because I really enjoyed Navarrette's work in Sketch Monsters 1 & 2. Booger Beard is a really fun, well told story about a really cute/gross concept. I loved the characters of Mijo and his mom! The art is very cute and Navarrette does an excellent job of integrating Spanish words in with the narrative; as a semi-bilingual person, the conversation between the kid and his mom felt very natural and my kid was able to pick up the meaning of words through context. The sketch art in the back is also a really nice bonus, especially for kids who are interested in making comics themselves. Perfect for little kids, but my 8 year old daughter thought it was great. It's a super cute book! I'll definitely pick up anything else he puts out!
I like the bilingual element, and the art is fun and colorful, but on the whole the way the concept was expanded just didn't land well for me. As a children's librarian, I am surrounded by gross-out humor constantly and gross-out humor has to be something really unique for it to garner my praise :). i'm sure it will have no problem finding fans.
