Gay Ever After #2

Potions & Prisons

When John the woodcutter realises he is about to lose the love of his life, he seeks out the wicked witch of the Enchanted Forest, hoping to buy a love potion to win his lover back. The witch refusing to help is only the start of his problems, for--on the stroke of midnight--the witch's cottage vanishes from the Enchanted Forest with him in it.

Mathias is the grandson of a wicked witch and, like his mother and grandmother, he is cursed to be trapped in the cottage in a desolate wasteland for the rest of his life. He and the cottage only return to the Enchanted Forest on Midsummer Day each year. The last thing he needs is an unexpected house guest.

Thrown together for a year, the spark between the two men soon ignites into passion, but can John live the rest of his life in a prison and would Mat even ask him to?

I live in England, in a quaint little village that time doesn't seem to have touched. No, wait a minute- that's the retirement biography. Right now I am in England in a medium sized town that no one has ever heard of, so I won't bore you with the details. Keeping me company are numerous sexy men. I just wish that they weren't all inside my head.

Please note, L.M. Brown is no longer active on Goodreads. Although she does occasionally check in to comment on another's blog the visits are few and far between.

5 fabulous fairy tale sexy stars!
Wow.. I loved this second entry in this series even more than the first. OMG John and Matthias are pretty damn awesome! Watching them circle round each other, slowly getting closer and closer was awesome. And the ending kept me guessing til the end! What pure unadulterated FUN this story was from start to finish! And the writing was polished to a shine!

‘Potions & Prisons’ is a slightly odd name for a fairy tale, even one that reimagines things and pretends the people inhabiting this world are real. But it’s a perfect description of the essence of this story about John the woodcutter and Mathias, who goes by Mat, the wicked witch. As in ‘Let Down Your Hair’, the first story in this series, there is a mix of several fairy tale elements that, by the time the author added her imagination and stirred everything, creates a new story with a slightly different flavor. While I loved the characters, what I liked was the way they ended up dealing with the curse. Not at all what I expected, and since I like surprises, this was a good thing.

John the Woodcutter is searching for the wicked witch in the Enchanted Forest. His lover dumped him deciding to get married to a woman and have kids with her. His only chance to be with the man he loves is to ask the witch to make a love potion for him. The day is almost ended when he finally finds the witch's house. He asks for the potion but the woman refuses to make one for him. They are still arguing and the woman is telling him to leave before is too late, John doesnt understand what the woman is saying, he will not leave without the potion. Few minutes later the Forest disappears and the witch tells him that they are now stucked together in this reality, just the 2 of them, for one year.
The witch's voice seems different. When the "woman" takes the cloak off, John finds out that is not a woman but an handsome young man, which name is Mathias.
Mat is a witch like his mother and grand-mother before him and like them he is under a curse. The 2 women were evil but he never hurt anyone.
He cant leave the house if not for one day, the same day when the house appears in the Forest. The poor man was alone almost all his life and now doesnt know how to act with John. He is pissed by the man and would like to be alone. But now they have to share this house for an year and the man can at least be useful.

The days pass and the relationships btw them evolves. They become sort of friends, John tells Mat about his life and Mat shares his past with him. When Mat was younger he had tried to leave the house but everytime the spell had called him back here. He has never had a real lover, just one night-stands. The only few ppl he loved left him. When his mother died, the love spell she had put on his father had ended and the man had left him. His first lover, the one that had took his virginity and with he wanted to leave, had never searched for him again after the spell had called him back. All the other lovers he had didnt last, no one wanted to wait an year to be together with the person they loved and none of them wanted to be with him in that house without being able to leave it, if not for one day each year.

Things are about to change. When the passion btw John and Mat explodes and they finally make love, John starts to think that he doesnt want to leave Mat, but the other man knows that this thing btw them cant be more than a fling and tells him so. He knows that he is lying to himself but if John doesnt know, he thinks that all will be ok.

One year passes, and they are back in the Enchanted Forest. This is a busy day for Mat, he needs to buy all he will need for the next year. He says goodbye to John and they part ways. During the few hours they are apart, John cant stop thinking about Mat. He is now sure of his feelings. In the end he decides to go back to the Forest and the witch's house. He is running, and can see the house, he is sure is on time, but soon after the house disappears and with him Mat.

John is shocked and his heart broken. He lost the only person he really loved, what was btw them he had never had with any of his previous lovers. He will wait one year for Mat, and then they will finally be together. He is leaving the forest when something attracts his attention. A little vial. He drinks it.

He can see Mat's house again, the man is sleeping on the bench made by John and has been crying. John wakes him up and tells him that he is back home.

Mat had made that vial hoping that John wanted to be with him. The vial took the person who drank it, to the thing/person they most desired and cared for and he had hoped he was that for John.

They are in love and will be together forever. Finally Mat is not alone anymore and I'm happy for him. John was a good and simple man.

The story was short, and wasnt so bad, but there are a lot of things I didnt like and would have changed. This book was a bit sad, and i was really sad for Mat, his life was terrible. Evil mother and grand-mother, the father leaves him and all the lovers abandon him, poor guy. Finally now he can be happy.

Nature and Nuture

Another very sweet little fairy tale! In this fairy tale world we meet a woodcutter and a witch. The witch is a descendant of the Evil Witch and still suffering for her crimes. John, the woodcutter, goes to the witch for a love spell. But the witch Mat won't give him one. John tries to plead his case but to find himself swept away as the house and all in and around it are sent to another world. Mat is tied to the house and the punishment for his heritage is to live in a desolate dimension all but one day a year. Now John us stuck with him for that year.

John and Mat are attracted but the circumstances keep them apart for a long time. John came for a love potion and is still getting over the man he lost. Mat knows that he is trapped and nothing will change that, so he can't drag someone else into it. Lingering for both of them is also the concern of their actions and motivations. Mat has had generations before him that have gone mad and lashed out at humanity. He fears going mad himself, driven crazy by his prison-esque house. John worries that he can't be good enough, a man who was willing to manipulate another with a love potion. He also fears being trapped after feeling that way growing up in a small town. Neither is able to commit to each other which makes it difficult to love each other.

The consequences of past magic and present actions continue to create these new fairy tales that are captivating and full of their own magic!

I absolutely love this series. I can't wait for the next installment. Potions and Prisons may not have the comedy of Let Down Your Hair, but it has a lot of heart, just like any variation of Beauty and the Beast should.

Sweet and enjoyable

This was an enjoyable short little read. I liked Mat right off but John had to grow on me. All in all a sweet fairytale ending.

Cute, heartwarming, very engaging! I liked the way the main characters were drawn together and the twists the author used to make the story stand on its own. *Kindle Unlimited Review*
