Magic of Love #1

A Man of Character

Rate this book
What would you do if you discovered the men you were dating were fictional characters you'd created long ago?

Thirty-five-year-old Catherine Schreiber has shelved love for good. Keeping her ailing bookstore afloat takes all her time, and she’s perfectly fine with that. So when several men ask her out in short order, she’s not sure what to do…especially since something about them seems eerily familiar.

Caught between fantasy and reality, Cat must decide which—or whom—she wants more.

Blending humor with unusual twists, including a magical manuscript, a computer scientist in shining armor, and even a Regency ball, A Man of Character tells a story not only of love, but also of the lengths we'll go for friendship, self-discovery, and second chances.

Don't tell anyone, but I started reading romance at the age of ten. I'd worked my way through all of the children's books available in the local bookmobile, so I turned to the adult section, where I spied a book with a woman in a flowing green dress on the cover. The back said something about a pirate. I was hooked (and still wish I could remember the name of that fateful book!).

My delight in witty repartee between hero and heroine, in the age-old dance of attraction vs. resistance, in the emotional satisfaction of a cleverly achieved Happily Ever After followed me through high school, college, even grad school. But it wasn't until I turned forty that I finally made good on my teenage vow to write said novels, not merely consume them.

I live in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley in Virginia with my fantastic husband, two fabulous kids, and three funny felines. You can usually find me in front of some sort of screen (electronic or window); I've come to terms with the fact that I'm not an outdoors person.

Looks like my previous review disappeared into the the void somewhere, so let's try again!

I'm familiar with Margaret's writing from the weekly flash fiction contest we participate in (Flash! Friday), so I already know that she is a great writer that can create fun scenarios and interesting characters in very few words. I was genuinely curious what she could do with tens of thousands of words to play with, so I downloaded her debut novel as soon as I heard about it.

I have to admit I was a little wary going in, predominantly due to the genre. I haven't read a romance novel before, but I certainly had preconceived notions about what to expect. I was fully anticipating hunky pool boys and non stop bonking. I strapped myself in and prepared for the cliches, but I should have known better. The story is well written, multi-layered and most of all enjoyable. Margaret has a lot of fun playing with genre conventions and there are plenty of playful nods throughout. Even as a non romance reader I could tell that she knows this genre inside and out.

I immediately liked Cat, the main character. I found her to be interesting and genuine, and her various relationships were realistic and complex. Due to the central premise of the story (which I don't want to spoil) some of the male suitors fall into stereotypes, but this is quite intentional and Margaret uses it to cleverly highlight the flaws in trying to find the 'perfect' man.

The book brings in elements of multiple other genres. The central premise has a touch of sci-fi/fantasy, which gives the author plenty of room to play with. Don't get me wrong, the book never forgets it is first and foremost a romance novel, but it is happy to dabble in other areas if it helps to improve the overall story. There's a surprising amount of humour (which i loved!) the dialogue in particular being fun and witty with lots of playful banter between the characters. There's even a hint of mystery as we all try to figure out the limits of Cat's new found abilities. All these elements are blended together with an expert touch.

Overall I enjoyed the book immensely. Consider me a romance novel convert ;)

What a refreshing, old fashioned read! Okay, I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but if you've read a lot of contemporary romance lately, you know they're all starting to sound the same: first person, deep DEEP pov, characters who are self-absorbed and self-obsessed, and almost always a vampire or two, if it's meant to be a paranormal.

This book, while it is a paranormal, doesn't dwell too much on the paranormal aspect--Cat, the main character who discovers she has the power to create her own heroes, is as surprised and dismayed by this strange ability as anyone would be. She's entirely relatable--not too pretty, not too smart (although she does speak Latin, useful when translating old manuscripts), not too wealthy, not too nice--just an average person with an above-average ability to, uh, create her own boyfriends. (And also, can I say, I felt a bit guilty reading this book on my Kindle, since Cat owns a book shop that, like all independent bookstores, isn't making a lot of money. I found myself wishing I'd bought a print copy from a local bookstore.)

The writing is flawless, the plotting is exquisite, and the characters are ones you want to cheer for--in fact, the secondary characters are deserving of their own books, so thankfully there's a peek into Eliza's story at the end of A Man of Character.

MINOR SPOILER: (I'm hoping William gets a shot at a story, too. He was just too tempting to leave on the table, you know what I mean?)

I truly enjoyed reading A Man of Character. I found myself eagerly flipping the pages, something that's all too rare for me these days. I look forward to Margaret Locke's next book, hopefully quite soon.

I received this book as a giveaway on Goodreads.

The scenario is engaging. When bookstore owner Cat's written fantasies come to life, she has to chose between them or another, harder to get man. The characters are cute, the story is cute, but not much more.

This book could have delved more into the nature of love, and the impact of betrayal. Not that the book intended to be a monument to realism, but many times I just didn't get or believe the main character. Following the harsh betrayal of her fiance, she didn't even look at another man for six years. The length seemed far-fetched given the reason. It is refreshing to have two (or three) romantic leads who are all likable, and don't make each other miserable from the start. But I like my female characters to have a little more edge and both Cat and her best friend are too saccharin for my taste.

Having said that, I still enjoyed the book for what it was. It is written well. The chemistry between characters is believable. I recommend it for those looking for a sweet romance style novel, with a bit of magic and fantasy.

This was a cute read. The men are interesting and attractive and the other characters engaging. I didn't like the heroine Cat in the first part of the book, but as the book went on her personality changed (I guess back to what she was before she was jilted) and she became more fun. The concept of the magic book was entertaining and I'm a sucker for bookstore owners and Austen, so this book was perfect for a quick read.

Very droll. A delightful romp that’s layered and filled with fascinating characters, each playing an important role in this convoluted romantic fantasy adventure that’s also an exploration of a woman’s, perhaps everywoman’s, psyche and imagination. Locke’s writing style is natural and pleasurable to read. A wonderfully entertaining read. I look forward to reading more of her work.

This was well done. I am often skeptical of magical realism since it requires a suspension of belief that I don't always like to give, but Margaret Locke did a good job with this one! I think what helped with the magical side of things was that the main character, Cat, also had her doubts. She didn't readily accept what was happening, which helped make her character, and the story, more real. It had When in Rome and Kate & Leopold vibes, which made for fun reading. Loved the story and the depth of Cat's (and Eliza's) characters. If you're looking for a fun magical realism book, this is it! :)

A Man of Character is such a fun book! It's lighthearted (which is how I like my romance), sexy without being dirty, with just enough magic to make the never-grown-up believer in you happy, but enough reality to make your jaded adult self believe magic just could happen. There's actually less about the big magic item than I would have expected (may I suggest a novella giving us the back story on that item and maybe even letting us read it, Ms. Locke?), but it leaves more room to focus on the romance, which is the heart of this story.

As the blurb above implies, Cat ends up with several suitors, each of whom I liked in a different way. (Okay, one of them was a jerk, but we've all known and wanted someone like that at some point in our past.) I found myself rooting for each one to end up with her at different points in the book. Now knowing the ending (which was A+), it's interesting to sit back and analyze what it is that makes each man attractive and what part of me, and Cat, he was appealing to.

This book is the delicious kind of fantasy you never want to end. What girl doesn't want to experience these dream dates Cat goes on? One made my toes curl it was so hot, and one was so perfect, I almost jumped up and down with glee. This is the kind of story you don't want to put down and can't wait to get back to because it touches an inner longing for that storybook story (to use a phrase associated with The Princess Bride) we're trained as little girls to want. Actually, I think a modern-day fairy tale is the perfect way to describe it.

The supporting characters are well-rounded and relatable, especially Eliza, the romance-reading, Jane-Austen-obsessed best friend. She's like your real friend, one who is genuinely warm, forgives you for not being able to look past your own nose, but isn't afraid to tell it like it is when you need her to. She's got a surprise twist in this story, one that I'm excited to learn from the excerpt at the end, we'll get to read all about in the next book.

In short, A Man of Character is a fun read that will make you swoon, while leaving you clamoring for more. As a reader, it made me feel all the ways I hope my books will make others feel. I highly recommend it to fans of light contemporary romance. Margaret should enter it into the RITAs next year. It's that good folks - it really could win romance writing's highest honor. Five stars.

“A Man of Character” by Margaret Locke
Simply Brilliant Novel, from beginning to end! Not your typical love story!! You will certainly fall in love with each character, even the cat, Elvis.
“A Man of Character” is a HIT!!! Margaret Locke’s first novel is a true gift to any of us that enjoy romantic comedies with a whimsical twist. And, her book is definitely whimsical! In such a delicious way!
I was enamored with this story from the beginning! This book is the perfect recipe for many of us to enjoy! I mean the heroine; Cat, Owns a book store, the Treasure Trove. She has an amazing best friend named Eliza, who loves her dearly, and supports her through thick and thin. Cat has given up on love for six years, but now suffering from “so many men, so little time” syndrome.
This book is just plain FUN!
……Margaret Locke writes of poets, poetry, writers and novels, especially Jane Austen. This book had my name written all over it!! She is a very smart writer; you could tell she knew a lot about her genre and more.
Margaret Locke is a superb writer! A wielder of words! A story-telling Genius!
I was totally hooked when Cat opened a gift from her Father; who had passed away 10 years prior, to find a Magical Medieval Manuscript. This manuscript was given to her father by his Grandmother, and it holds the powers to bring characters to life. As soon as she opens it, the romance stories that Cat wrote in the past start coming to life. I was so impressed with Margaret Locke’s ability to make this “power” seem so effortless, and not farfetched. At . All.
I was enraptured with all of the love and friendship that was weaved between these pages.
I don’t want to give away anything more specific about this book; because that will take away from its whimsy.
Read “A Man of Character” and you will be anxiously awaiting her next novel with me for “A Matter of Time”. It comes out this Fall.
Thank goodness this is not the end!

I loved this book! And before I write my review, I have to say that when I saw the second book excerpt at the end, I was super excited.

This storyline – having characters from stories you wrote about the perfect man come to life – is a new one to me. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline. Not to give away too much of the story, I found it quite interesting how the “perfect” men of Catherine’s stories came to life and she fought a hard battle with her feelings before realizing that what was perfect man at the time she wrote the story, wasn’t necessarily her perfect man now. The book is about her journey and the discovery of a special power that she has that she is unaware of and friendship and romance.

The writing was great; sentences well-formed. I love intelligent dialogue and this book had it. I am not talking about dialogue above anyone’s head, just great writing. And, I did not find one grammatical error, which if you follow my reviews you know that I am a stickler for errors. I spot them too easily and so I find them quite distracting. I do want to say that if I receive a book that clearly states “uncorrected proof” I do not comment on the errors I find, but I do expect a completed book to be pretty much error free.

I am giving A Man of Character five stars. It’s a great book with a brilliant storyline, developed characters and you won’t want to put it down.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The premise of this book riveted me from the get-go. Cat Schreiber gains possession of a medieval manuscript that, somehow, gives her the power to create the perfect man. When three men show up in her life, all of them familiar characters from those long-ago stories, Cat has to decide if she wants a storybook romance that she's penned herself, or if she should hope for something more.

It's a fascinating read. The characters are well-developed. Cat's story arc is seamlessly done, growing from a closed, gun-shy woman with a deeply painful romantic past into a woman who overcomes emotional obstacles, opening herself to love and a life with the man of her dreams. Her best friend, Eliza, is a brilliant foil for her, imbuing humor and optimism into Cat's Eeyore-ish tendencies.

There are many laugh-out-loud moments in this book--the dialogue is free, easy, and engaging--as well as some emotion-filled passages that pull out the tears. Like any good romance, the happily-ever-after ending leaves you content (and a little dreamy), and the last chapter opens a nice segue for Eliza's story in book two (which I can't WAIT to read!).

A Man of Character is one of the strongest debut novels I've ever read. Margaret Locke has a brilliant future ahead of her, and I look forward to following her career.

This book showed up under my Amazon recommendations. I liked the cover and read the blurb and instantly had to click buy. What a great idea to have Book Boyfriends come to life. It’s every girl’s fantasy or at least it is one of mine to have BB’s I’ve read about over the years come to life.

There is more to this story than just BB coming to life. When looking back on the story you can see how Cat grows and progresses during her life in what she wanted, what she needed, and what she deserved. Cat writes about each of the guys at different points in her life for different reasons. Each of guys she meets is so different. Some you just know it’s not going to work with while others you really hope it works out with. She makes mistakes throughout the story as we all do when it comes to love but she manages to pull it all together.

Now that Cat knows how the book works it sounded like she was going to start using it to help others. It will be interesting to see how she uses it in the future…who she helps and how. I loved what she did for Eliza at the end. I hope this series continues.

What a fun concept for a book and I absolutely loved every minute of it.

What would you do when after 6 years of hiding away from men in general, you became the one that everyone was chasing after. Well that's exactly what happens to Catherine. The men of her dreams all of a sudden become a reality. Not really sure as to why the sudden change until her and her best friend figure out that it has to do with an ancient manuscript she received as a present from her father (years after his death) that is bringing her past stories, to life.

Although the thrill is there, are these men really the man of her dreams? Do they like her because of who she is or because of how she wrote them in her short stories?

This was a cute, fun, read about coming to terms with who you are and what you want in life.

Can't wait to read more from Margaret and continue the journey!

I loved this book! Here's the basic story line:
A 35-year-old bookstore owner decides she is finally ready to move on with her life and start dating again. After receiving an old manuscript from her mother (who mailed it to her after her father's death) Cat (the bookstore owner) starts being swamped by cute, eligible, dreamy guys asking her out. There's Derrick, the constant high school jock; Grayson, the poetry quoting player; William, the billionaire tycoon who is every girl's idea of Prince Charming; and then there's Ben, the computer science professor. But wait. Ben has a girlfriend. All these guys (except Ben) sound just like characters that Cat made up for stories she wrote about herself. And what does this ancient manuscript have to do with anything?
This story has a wonderful ending with a yearning for what comes in the next book.
I laughed. I cried. I loved every moment!

Imagine being able to create the perfect man, but simply creating him in a story. That's exactly what happens to Cat - only she didn't know she had that power. As Cat suddenly meets all these men, and begins to realize that they had similarities to short stories she penned as a teenager, Cat's world is turned upside down. It's a really fun read, leaving every girl who reads it the hope that she too can create the perfect person for herself.

I don't usually read romances, but I couldn't quit reading this one. It arrived in the mail late Thursday, and I finished it Friday morning. This novel has a clever premise, cool characters, a neat twist toward the end (a perfect set-up for the sequel), and a great sense of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and can't wait for Margaret Locke's next work.

I was blessed with a free copy of this book, and have chosen of my own volition to share my review with you!

Wow, another great read from Margaret Locke! The characters are well-developed. The story line has a steady flow with a few unexpected twists and turns. There is a bit of sexuality in the book, but overall a clean read.

Imagine being given an ancient family heirloom that can change your own future. Cat, the main character, has been given just this kind of gift; except she is given no direction on how to use the gift. Fumbling along she discovers how the gift works, and has to decide if she will use it. Read to discover the fate of these decisions.

I really enjoyed the plot of this book, Cat and the guys chasing her were very entertaining, as was her relationship with Eliza.
From the moment Ben was introduced I wanted him to be the winner of her heart, though.
You’ll have to read and see who captures her love on your own.

What I didn’t like about the book was that I felt like I was reading an older historical romance, when it was set in the 21st century. The language was an old fashioned and modern mixture and it just didn’t click for me. Knowing (from blurbs) that there are other books by this author in the historical romance genre, it kind of makes sense, but at the same time I wanted to feel in the moment, and I felt more like I was time traveling between centuries.
Again, I did enjoy the storyline, it had great promise and was fulfilled, with love and adventure. If you are able to read passed the odd terminology and not have to use the dictionary often, I would recommend you try this book.

This is the first book I have completed by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story line was creative and compelling which kept me interested and made me think. I will look for other books by Margaret Locke. I listened to the book rather than reading it as I have a very long daily commute. The narrator, Kathryn LaPlante is very talented. She has a very captivating voice which she skillfully adjusts to embody each character. Very impressed!

I received a free copy from instafreebie, with no obligation to leave feedback.
This was a good story. The flow started to slow, but after a certain point picked up. The main characters are mostly likable, there are a few points that Cat bugged me, it was hard to like her at first. Ben, though likable all a long thru the book, just seemed on the fence about Cat too much thru most of the book. Loved the supporting friend Eliza. I'm interested in reading the next book, cause it's her story, & her time travel situation seemed more interesting. The plot to this book had some holes that kept me puzzled, though not enough to hurt the reading enjoyment.

Interesting problem

Cat receives a medieval manuscript with a intriguing poem in Latin. It implies that live stories written will take flesh or become real. Soon she needs to choose from 4 very different men. Most interesting is what happens to her best friend Eliza when she writes about her. Lots of fun.

I received this book for free from the author at AXP.com; this is my honest review. 4 stars.
This is my first book with this author and I was pleasantly surprised. The editing was expertly done; I just found a few errors but nothing to keep you off track. When I first read the description, I thought about two movies I had watched in the same vein ("Ruby Sparks" & "Stranger than Fiction"). This is another take on a writing/coming-to-life story. The prologue sets off the story of what could have been, then the plot is established in the first few chapters. The story is told at a steady pace giving us the details of the legend bits by bits; it's enjoyable and realistic (without the magic part) - the angst, the fear, the friendship, etc... The story flows slowly but steadily and keeps you going page after page. I thought "Dr. Lancet" was a good touch (vs. the Lancet Medical Journal). Two things I could've gone without: There were too many instances where the heroine kept pulling her hair out of her face or someone else was doing for her.

Meet Catherine (Cat) Schreiber, singleton, bookstore owner and heir to an ancient manuscript with magical powers. She shies away from romantic entanglements ever since a life-altering moment at the altar, and for years has been successful. That is, until Cat’s mother presents her with the manuscript, bestowed upon her from her paternal grandmother. It comes with the promise of great power and love, but with that power comes even greater responsibility. Cat struggles to understand the magic contained within the manuscript, and the power of love. Along the way, she learns that sometimes dreams do come true and true love isn’t just fantasy, but reality.

A Man of Character begins with a great premise. Romance, with a twist. Paranormal, without vampires. A new, fresh voice and unique story line. Without vampires. Or over-the-top, graphic and gratuitous sex. Ms. Locke grabbed my attention from the story synopsis. I’ve never been a genre-specific reader, but avoided the romance aisle for all the cliché covers of half-naked men, and women appearing as the subservient character. After reading this book, I’m inclined to call myself a romance (among other genres) reader.

The main character, Cat, had believable, relatable struggles through the book, despite also wielding magical powers at the tip of her pen. Her anxieties were palpable, although the repeated reminder of her angst became redundant. The primary supporting characters were well-crafted, adding both levity and depth to the story. In my opinion the story drags for a brief period, around the halfway mark with a family crisis and an additional love interest for Cat, but otherwise keeps good pace and reader interest. Ms. Locke sets up her chapter endings in a manner that makes you want to turn the page and keep reading. The end was predictable but satisfying, and fulfilled my expectations of a romance novel.

For the busy mom looking for a paranormal romance (without vampires) or a light, fun read, this is a great choice. The ride is definitely worth the price of admission! I really enjoyed it, would recommend it without hesitation and look forward to reading more by Ms. Locke. Her characters are endearing and she wove in a set up the second book in her “Matters of Love” series, following Cat’s best friend, Eliza, on her own magical romance. Stay tuned for my review of her story in A Matter of Time! In the meantime, happy reading and happy trails!

Reviewer’s note: Ms. Locke is a member of Shenandoah Valley Writer’s Group and a founder of the critique group I joined this past fall. I purchased A Man of Character after meeting Ms. Locke at one of her promotional events in June 2015. She did request a review of her novels in January 2016. Advanced review copies of her books were not provided, as I had already purchased them both. She was offered the courtesy of an advance read of this review prior to its posting. I pride myself in fair reviews and strive to ensure my personal relationships do not influence my ratings or opinion of an author’s work.

The consequences of a dream come true....

What would you do if you held a unique magic in your hands? What will be your reaction if you had the power to turn your fantasy into reality? If you were able to create your dream man and make your writing turn him into flesh what will be the consequences? And most importantly, is your Mr. Perfect really what you want in life?
These are the main questions around which Margaret Locke's A Man Of Character revolves around. The story contains Cat, a bookstore owner who comes to possess a medieval book from her grandmother, through which she unknowingly gains the power to convert the writings of her dream men into reality. Along with her regency England obsessed friend Eliza, she commences into a hilarious, confusing, and clarifying journey of her suddenly hyped love life. With three suitors of her own creation, Cat comes to realize the value of genuine love and spontaneous affection of normal not-so-perfect man over forced attraction.
The characters are instantly likable in their authenticity and quirkiness. The heroine Cat reflects the single middle aged women of our society, who are wary of love form past experiences but still holds a flicker of hope within their heart.
The hero with his goofy, nerdy, and sincere vibes, spreads a wave of longing to the readers- for their own adoringly flawed knight, who slays their computer dragons with power cables and imaginary swords.
The three suitors whose appearance ultimately propels the plot and makes Cat realize her true feelings, comes across as seductive, cocky and, sometimes as too perfect of a mix- none of which truly appeals to Cat. This proves that ones truly does not know the mind, and the vast distinction between dream and reality.
The plot is fast paced with startling clarity, showcasing the tumultuous state of Cat's mind, while providing funny situations with her friend Eliza and her love affair with regency romances. Mention must be made of their cat Elvis, whose uncanny appearances in strategic places of the novel makes an excellent addition.
Also the subplot of Eliza's love life adds an exciting dimension of time travel and historical undertaking into the romance.
This is a book where the childish fantasies of youth, which never completely faded, rises their head from time to time to teach us to shed the bondage of pessimistic views and enrich life, enliven it. It questions our quest for that unattainable perfection , changes our view of the ideal, model, flawless, faultless, of the exemplary ultimate, and asks, whether that perfection is truly desirable or not.
Lastly, the ending of the book is masterly, providing an ingenious twist, proving the author's dexterous appeal and her adroitness with the written word.
