Fall of Gods

Rate this book
She is gone.

The gods have long ago vanished. In their place, two rivaling races now inhabit Midgard; the humans and jotnar. Fifteen years ago, a coalition of chieftans drove the jotnar race from Midgard. Now, from each side of the border, humans and jotnar eye eachother with hatred and suspicion.

When his wife, the estranged daughter of one of Midgard's most powerful chieftans, is mysteriously kidnapped, a retired warrior takes up the hatchet and sets out to rescue her. But he risks unleashing the wild demon buried deep within him and losing his soul in the process. His journey will bring him into conflict with terrible forces as a cynical plot is revealed and the dark mythological past of the North begins to awaken once more.

A uniquely realised illustrated novel, Fall of Gods brings the legacy of the Norse mythology to life in a new and breathtaking way.

So I backed this book on Kickstarter... eight months ago, hoooo boy was it worth the wait. The artwork is gorgeous (and obviously the point of the book) and the story, while not anything groundbreaking, is solid and well told.

It amazes me how well they were able to build a world in so few pages - I regularly read 400+ page fantasy epics which have less impressive worldbuilding. Of course a visual medium over literary helps, but nevertheless - I just want to jump back into that world again. And since apparently it is the first of a planned series, I'll be able to!! So excited.

Very good, very worth the money - and most importantly, well worth the wait.

Created by two Danes, this is a stunning, dark tale set in an alternative, Viking age Scandinavia, where the Norse gods once existed, but have fallen into lore. Instead of retelling the well-know tales, they’ve written a story of loss, vengeance, racism, imperialism, and letting an anti-hero be the protagonist, a man cursed by a beast inside him. There is no good or evil, there is only survival.

The artwork is simply gorgeous, the digital paintings look like cinematographic shots, with blurry motifs too close to the “lens”, and foggy backgrounds obscurring details, all done in muted colors, which gives it a dirty, noir feel.

I bought it a couple of years ago, and today I bought the sequel, and celebrated by finally getting around to reading part 1. Simply a fantastic piece of work!

Backed this on kickstarter and so glad I did.

This is the kind of book I've been trying to get someone to collaborate on for several years. Full works of art combined with narrative text that create a story both visual and textual. This does it brilliantly.

The writing isn't the best, but it does what it needs to. It's very noirish in style and we have an interesting and mysterious antihero searching for his stolen wife.

But the visuals are why I paid and they're really exceptional.

Fantastic little novel highly influenced by Norse mythology. Looks like this is the first in a series and I'll probably be funding it to completion.

If you can get your hands on it, do it.

Kickstarter-backed stuff.
And not a typical book - more like a short, viking-themed story with beautiful illustrations that actually play a major role in narration.

Pros:
* story may be very simple, but it's VERY darkish, murky & naturalistic - until the very end
* vast majority of illustrations are of VERY high quality - beautiful is the perfect word to describe them

Cons:
* story is very short - it doesn't matter much TBH as I prefer it brief, but meaty, but after 8 months of waiting, the appetite was for something longer
* some of illustrations that were not included in the main story (but are in the appendix) actually seem better then what was used - odd

In the end, I've got pretty much what I've expected & I think I'll be coming back to FoG from time to time.

Never read a book with such spare text that has evoked such an emotional response. While normally reticent about computer enhanced illustrations these are works of art. The photo-realism enhances the atmosphere and drama of the story.

Buy it - inhale it - relish it. Wear white gloves and keep the book wrapped in bubble wrap. It's a keeper.

A three-star story (would have benefited from a competent content editor) gets five-star artwork (beautifully dark photo-realistic digital art) to make a wonderfully produced four-star mythological fantasy that is fully steeped in Norse legend. A keeper. This is a quality art book. I'll certainly be looking in-depth at the next tome in this series.

Wow, this book was awesome. The story is simple but very dark with a Norse backdrop which is pretty cool. That being said, the story is short. It bummed me out considering how much money I paid for this book. Still, the art is phenomenal. It's of very high quality where every page dripping in detail. I wouldn't say the art is beautiful because the art goes with the dark/murky story. Though it is still gorgeous in its own way. I pretty much got what I expected from this book. A grim tale with flawless art. I'll definitely come back to this book in the future and flip through these wonderful pages.

As it is it’s not perfect, but I just love the “cinematic book” format, and hope the publisher keeps exploring this. I like the world this is set in, with a fresh take on Norse mythology. Will probably read the sequel. Filed under “guilty pleasures”.

If I were to rate this book only for its illustrations it would get 4 stars. The writing, however, was bad. While myth can sound timeless, this retelling of a part of Scandinavian mythology follows a templete of pretty much every modern YA book

- A tough as nail fighter with troubled past falls in love with a gentle woman and they live happily and peacefully, until... – check
- The woman gets abducted hence giving our fighter a chance to show how tough and rough he is
- A fighter female pirate who saves the day – check
- white ruling people presented as corrupted imperialist slave traders – check
- The or subjugated wild races like jotnars, trolls and forest people, constantly pitied by our sjw norseman hero – check

Enjoyed it. Beautiful artwork, and I liked the disjointed story telling style. Too short to justify 5 stars however.

The characters' depth could have been deeper, but the illustrations saved the day.

The art work alone would be 5 stars but the story....the way it was told just didn't sit right with me.
