The Passion: Photography from the Movie "The Passion of the Christ"

Rate this book
The Passion is a visual portrayal of the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus. Gripping photos taken on the set of Mel Gibson's new film, The Passion of Christ, together with the biblical narratives in the New Living Translation, present the story in vivid detail. A sweeping presentation of the Passion story in powerful images that will enhance the movie experience! “This is a movie about love, hope, faith, and forgiveness. He [Jesus] died for all mankind, suffered for all of us. It's time to get back to that basic message. The world has gone nuts. We could all use a little more love, faith, hope, and forgiveness.” —Mel Gibson, Icon Productions

2022: I can still remember the first time I saw this movie. Reading the book is a good way to ponder the events of the Passion at your own pace. I need to do this every year.

2008: A beautiful meditation for Holy Week or any time of the year which can be done with or without the film. Scripture quotes accompany full color pictures on each page. I have the Catholic edition which is accompanied by the biblical narrative from the Douay-Rheims Bible as well as Aramaic and Latin text.

"You are My friends. There is no greater love than for a man to lay down his life for his friends. I cannot be with you much longer, My friends. You cannot go where I am going. My commandment to you after I am gone is this: Love one another. As I have loved you, so love one another.''

A film detailing the final hours and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

James Caviezel: Jesus

(A review of the film, story and visual artistic experience...)

"What is Truth?" asked by Pontius on Passion, from John chapter 18, verse 38 of the Gospel of John, is often referred to as "jesting Pilate" or "What is truth?", of Latin Quid est veritas? In it, Pontius Pilate questions Jesus' claim that he is "witness to the truth" (John 18:37).

From the enigmatic beginning to the climactic credits, Passion of the Christ demands full control of ones body, mind and emotion. So visually spectacular and physically effecting, Passion had me literally convulsing and writhing in pain. Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, starring Jim Caviezel, is a retelling of the last hours of Jesus Christ in beautiful Aramaic. Believe me when I say that this production is more than a story, more than a movie, this film can only be described as an ethereal spiritual experience.

Remember the fish symbol, remember revolution, remember the people who stand for change in dark times...

This Passion of the Christ is fantastically brutal, gory and sadistically torturous. From beginning to end, blood drenched flesh is smeared across the screen in a ghastly fashion, putting even degenerate SAW or Hostel films to shame. Gibson defends his incredibly graphic depiction by noting that the bible states Jesus was beaten and tortured beyond recognition. I assure you, beaten beyond recognition hardly describes soft tissue being torn to the bone as blood drips into puddles on the ground. The violence shown in this film is unlike other Hollywood violence - it's uncomfortably personal, in effect unforgiving. The scenes are moving, the violence perhaps repetitive, that the chapters appear to take place in your very mind; imagine before you a man being torn to bloody shreds; you're powerless to intervene, you're reduced to a spectator.
Jesus the carpenter, the healer, the revolutionary of an age... The twelve disciples show friends ultimately can betray you. This doesn't stop you from loving them regardless of their actions or sins.
Everyone betrays him and even his own disciples. Anyone who has read the Gospel of Judas may also note that Jesus asks or rather commands Judas to make a great sacrifice as well: He tells him to betray him and this is also significant and emotionally charged, powerful.

''You have heard it said you shall love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you. For if you love only those who love you, what reward is there in that?''

As any appreciator of the finer things in film might see, The Passion of the Christ is artistic genius. Mel Gibson stated that his film follows the last 12 hours of Christ in accordance to the Gospel, and although biblical scholars have confirmed this to be true, it is also true that a certain artistic license was taken to particular moments in the story. Nothing anti-biblical was added, but inside a sense deep meaning was inserted through symbols and actions not actually recorded in the gospels. This artistry serves to aid the story and engage the audience - artistically and culturally, expect nothing less that a film superbly crafted. The Aramaic language also gives the film and story a realistic essence that the audience can taste, hear and feel. You are witnessing a struggle.
Set your expectations high, this one can handle them.

No matter your personal background, no matter your views on evolution or ideology, no matter your beliefs on the afterlife or views on heaven, this Passion needs to be seen. The art, the culture, and the magnificence - see The Passion of the Christ and you will have seen a glimpse of history spanning over two thousand years ago.

Seen the movie many times, but viewing the pictures, especially at your own pace, really add to the weight of the 'biblical event'.

Though my faith is not what it once was, this book still holds a lot of power over me.

It's an excellent book to scroll through, published before the 2004 movie became a major hit. It depicts photos from the film finalizing the 12 hours before Jesus's death. A few photos depicting the filming of the movie conclude this table-side book.

Director Mel Gibson provides a personal, genuine foreward. Scripture references coinciding with the still photography are interspersed within this book, together telling the story.

Perhaps this book could have been published with even more photos from the movie, including more photos of its filming behind the scenes, but that should not hinder you from making this part of your collection.

This book features gorgeous & moving still images from the blockbuster Movie, The Passion of the Christ, by Mel Gibson. Sometimes, it's easy to forget the brutality of the supreme sacrifice that Jesus went through to offer us the free gift of salvation. If I feel myself starting to kind of "gloss over" the cross and the crucifixion in my mind, then I head straight to this book where I've marked the images that shock me the most. It completely humbles me and reminds me that I am not my own and that I'm bought with a price.

The movie stills in this book are of beautiful quality, but of course that doesn't make many of them any easier to look at. I remember I was so disturbed by this film when I saw it that I needed the images in this book to stare at, to make them stand still, so they'd stop swirling around inside my head. Not so sure it'd have the same effect on me now. I'm jaded enough to just see prosthetics and makeup.

It's a film. A great film that depicts the history of Christ, the reason why he is here, and the reason why he had to be nailed on the cross.
