Next up in Iain Rob Wright's horror fuelled adventure through the alphabet is J and the subject matter is of course Jaws. Now I really had high hopes for this one, sharks and the like fascinate me, Jaws is a top film and there really is no answer to combat creatures of the deep. Unless you've got a pretty fool proof plan involving not going on or anywhere near the water.

Ok so we've got some friends out on a boat, you can guess the scenario, two guys, two girls, one hot and the other not so much but with a lovely personality. Everyone gets down to some serious sunbathing, sleeping or shagging and suddenly the boats drifting, the anchors been cut. Jaws has a submersible grinder and out pops James Bond's nemesis with the metal teeth and an axe to grind.

Only joking hot babe goes swimming and all we see is a 'large grey boulder' that splits down the middle and a rather large set of teeth the size of fence posts. A proper monster of the deep it seems and things can only get worse from here on out.

To be honest there's only so many ways you can go with a story like this and whichever path you choose it's unfortunately going to be predictable. The stories written well but there's no surprises and little in the way of tension. I'll definitely keep trying because one of these is going to blow me away, hopefully I don't have to wait for Z and Zombie’s or a Zebra with an Uzi.

A 2.5* rating.

Review:
Shudder...this brings back memories of certain films featuring horrors at sea, of which I've seen far too many. Yes, it's all been done before, but J is for Jaws is written with intelligence and respect to its predecessors.
In some short stories, it can be really difficult to get much sense of the characters, but here they are described in such a way as they are instantly likeable (or not!) so you can root for them (or not!)
Another great instalment.

Another cracker in the A-Z series.
These quick fun stories just seem to be getting better as they go along.
I was almost expecting this one to be a bit cheesy. Oh Jaws, here we go. But I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It's unique and an enjoyable read.

Iain Rob Wright continues his A to Z of Horror series with "J is for Jaws," a short story whose title should give any reader who has ever seen a movie a good idea of what it involves. For those unfamiliar with Wright's series, he's written an anthology with a story for each letter of the alphabet. And there's a common theme that runs through these stories, even though the stories themselves are very diverse as to tone and setting. However, in each story, he tries to build the tale around some basic instinctive fear that most people share.

In "J Is for Jaws," the fear is the sea, or, more specifically the very large creatures with very large teeth that reside somewhere beneath the ocean surface. "Jaws" focuses on two couples out for a weekend outing on a large pleasure boat owned by Conrad, a wealthy banker. Business has been good for Conrad, so he's invited one of his more successful associates, Tate, on the outing as a reward for a prosperous year. Also along for the ride are Tate's girlfriend, Ellie, and her friend Natalie. After an evening with plenty of booze and plenty of other nocturnal activities, the outing turns sour the next day when something large literally crashes the party.

What happens in the rest of the story will be very familiar to anyone who has seen Steven Spielberg’s classic movie, and, to be honest, the entire story will be pretty familiar. And, that’s exactly the author’s point. He has fashioned a story that’s an homage to the Spielberg movie, and, indeed most other horror films in which a small group of people are trapped in an isolated setting. Readers know what’s going to happen, so they play along, trying to figure out just how and when the first attack is going to occur and then figure out the order in which characters will meet their demises. (Here’s a big hint: the one who acts the dumbest and most obnoxious is inevitably the first to go.)

Of course, the movie Jaws was limited in the shark effects that were available with 1970’s technology, but author Wright’s word processor has no such limitations, so the creature is something well beyond your typical great white shark. Wright did learn from Spielberg the lesson about playing some things close to the vest, so he tantalizingly leaves some bits of the description of the monster to the imagination, so that the remaining characters aren’t really sure what they are dealing with. And, when the end does come for some of them, the descriptions are a bit gruesome.

Wright does vary the Jaws formula a bit with a trick ending that probably won’t be a big surprise for most people, and that ending does deter a bit from the rest of the story, but, for the most part, traditional horror fans will have fun with “J Is for Jaws,” precisely because it feels so familiar. This is the literary horror version of comfort food, a story that doesn’t break any new ground but manages to make genre readers feel right at ho me. Fans of this series, or of horror in general, will want to take a bite out of this story.

J is for Jaws (A-Z of Horror, book 10) by Iain Rob Wright. This short horror story reminded me of the movie called Jaws in parts.

Ellie, Natalie and her boyfriend Tate were living the dream aboard Conrad's yacht in the Gulf of Mexico. He was not only their boss but a friend of Tate too.

Little did they know what was going to rear it's ugly head from out of the water. Conrad calls for the Coast Guard vessel to rescue them and they kill the sea monster outright.

Unbeknown to them there is someone out to get revenge for killing her baby and she will not be singing a sweet lullabye sometime soon.

As predictable as the core storyline is from the title, this short story is still a success in my book as it provides great motivation to readers by making us invested in the romance aspect of it. I found myself rooting for Nat and Conrad to live.

As with any shark-centric works of literature, the majority of the suspense comes from the chase between the predator and the prey. In that area, I was satisfied. Unfortunately, we don't get to know what the monster in the water is. But, the great twist at the end made up for the lack of depth in the identity and origin of the monster.

"Stop playing with your food." ~ Every mom, everywhere.
Iain Rob Wright's A-Z OF HORROR series continues with it's tenth installment - J IS FOR JAWS.
A day of fun in the sun aboard a friend's yacht sounds like the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon - until a creature rises from the depths and wants to play, too.
Saving the day, with a little help from the Coast Guard, is usually cause for celebration. But don't tip those longnecks just yet... playtime isn't quite over...

Reading the synopsis for this story, I was totally expecting to have a 'Meh!' moment at the final paragraph. Some of these A-Z stories have been disappointing as we veteran IRW readers have come to expect a lot more from anything with his name on it. I am pleased to be able to say that I enjoyed this story very much. I was disappointed when then ending came too soon but with an amazing finale.

I'm a big fan of shark horror, and Jaws is one of my favorite movies. (The book not so much but I digress.) This is a great sea monster tale in that same vein. The ending to me was a little too predictable and took the story down a notch, but overall this one was entertaining.

If you like horror stories set on the sea, pick this one up.
