3.5 stars rounded up. Could have been a clear 4 star if not for the ultra flimsy vengeance angle.
The story really kept me interested, but there's lame HP tycoon excuses for revenge and then there's this.
Heroine's mother married the H's uncle when she was 17. Over the course of a few years, when she went to visit her mother in Venice, she and the hero had become attracted to one another. But the H assumed she was like her shallow mother and the h saw him as a playboy who probably only wanted her for sex. Finally, when she's 21-22 they have a one-night-stand and the next morning he says some nasty things to her. It wasn't real specific on exactly what happened, but sounds like he basically treated her like a slut. So, she slapped his face and left Venice to return to Australia where she was raised by her father.
Sooooo... he needed vengeance because she slapped him and walked out after he was very insulting following a one night stand. Guess she was supposed to say "thanks, may I have some more."
Luca went to elaborate lengths to get Valentina back in Venice 3 years after the fact. He'd had to be patient because his plot involved lending her spendthrift mother more and more money until he was at the point where he could toss her on the streets and the mother begged the heroine to come and try to talk to Luca. Luca then planned to offer her a deal. He'd fix her mother's financial situation if she'd be his mistress.
The OTT obsession with the heroine made it worth the read and there was some angst. I also really liked the h. She took the bull by the horns and made demands of her own. She wasn't a total doormat martyr as I worried she might be. I hate it when the heroine goes to ridiculous lengths to save a family member who really doesn't seem to care much about her. In this case, the h was fully prepared to let her absentee mother learn her lesson and deal with the consequences of her overspending, until the H convinced mom to ask the heroine's father to put up his Australian farm to help her. Her dad was a different story, he had raised her and been a devoted parent. Of course, she could have leveled with Dad about the true situation (not her mother's twisted version) and prevented the whole thing with honest/open communication. Obviously we can't have those shenanigans in HPLandia.
Still, I wish the author had come up with some slightly less insane reason for vengeance. Especially since his plan was to cruelly make her fall in love with him and then ditch her - really viscous, considering she didn't do anything that could even be considered a tiny bit unreasonable in walking out on him. I agree that most of these vengeance plans are nonsensical at best, but this one was particularly flimsy. Of course we're to believe it wasn't really vengeance as much as a lie the H told himself to get the h back in his life - which is pretty much the backbone of 90% of the vengeance HPs. Still, put some imagination into it. Come up with something that allows the H to feel self-righteous and in the right in some twisted way, not something that is just flat out petty and childish.
ETA: I could have done without the miscarriage part. Yeah, it added angst, but otherwise I didn't see how it added to the story.

But then, he’d broken ties with Lily almost twenty-five years ago now. It might not have been a long marriage but, knowing her mother, he’d more than served his time.

A few more outings and the papers would blow it out of all proportion and wedding bells would be predicted and gambled upon. And she would start believing it herself. Amazing book! I could not put it down. The hero seeks revenge on the heroine for walking out on him after a one night stand. He then puts into motion some plan to get her back and extract his revenge which is having her back in his bed only to publicly dump her and embarrass her later. Valentina accepts cause this is the only way she will repay her mother's debt but of course neither can't help falling in love. What Luca doesn't know is that 3 years ago Tina was pregnant with his child but their baby died soon after he was born. This story was bittersweet and highly emotional. The epilogue left me smiling even with tears streaming down my cheeks!

There was some great intensity in this story and angst - but the revenge plot made no sense. Hero was angry because after a ONS in Venice, the heroine slapped him and went back to Australia. It's not spelled out, but I think the hero initiated the ONS to begin with because he was angry at the heroine's mother inheriting the house he grew up in.
His revenge was thwarted then, so he's having it now - three years later - by blackmailing the heroine into his bed for a month. In turn, he'll set the heroine's amoral mother up in an apartment and forgive her debts.
The heroine is willing to let her mother suffer the consequences of her actions but when the hero drags her sheep farmer father into it, she capitulates.
I liked that the heroine was justifiably angry with her mother, but also that she tried to overcome that anger and forge a better relationship. Still for all the angst about the I could never warm up to these characters. They were all self-centered and petulant. Dear old dad out in the Outback had the most heroic qualities.
And I share the heroine's dislike of her mother's hoarding Venetian glass. All that dusting. *shudder*

I wasn’t liking this too much at the beginning, but as it progressed it became so much better.
It worked itself into a crescendo of angst, lots of emotions and a beautiful epilogue!,,
Didn’t like either character much, but they developed and evolved into like able characters.

Well, it's another 'revenge' themed romance, the characters are nice and somehow the romance angle of things kind of...works? However, the ending feels a bit too rushed I mean.....the hero had been a real jerk to the girl at the ending part of the story (okay, he is also pretty much a jerk before, but it's the kind of things that I can handle).....why must every book ends with marriage and HEA so quickly!? Won't it be nice to have a 'let's build a stronger foundation for our relationship, get to know each other better and then get married one year later, or even a few years later'?
Anyway, it's an enjoyable escapism stuff.

Very intense read, very emotional and fraught with tension and passion. The blackmailed-into-his-bed trope has been used more than I care to count but Trish Morey's writing style gives it a fresh appearance. I like Valentina and my heart aches for her grief. She is strong and mature in spite of her young age. But on the other hand, Luca, with his desire for revenge, appears one-dimensional, childish and immature. I couldn't warm to him till the last chapter when he belatedly tries to redeem himself. But to be honest, the reasons for his behavior don't convince me one iota. After one night stand, he feels a connection with Valentina, so instead of running scared, he insults her. And when she slaps him and walks away, he is angry coz no woman walks away from him ! and he plans his revenge to have her back and then dump her publicly! As I said before, not very mature. I fail to see his logic! And my satisfaction with the whole story suffered because of that.

This book was terrible. Not the writing itself, but the plot. Luca is one of the worst male leads I've ever read. The reasons for his plan are ridiculous and his methods are disgusting. How any woman forced into this situation could fall in love, is beyond me.

This novel was so emotionally draining to read. I adored it. I have to admit to crying a lot of tears but at the same time I couldn't have asked for a better novel.

Luca was too much of a b****** to be redeemable. The explanation at the end was no justification at all, rather it was a typical hollow, false and egoistic explanation given by just another hateful, chauvinistic, misanthropic Neanderthal that weak women gladly accept to satiate their unrealistic dreams of love. No guy who loves a woman can be so unfeeling and hurtful towards her and for no real reason at all.

I really enjoyed this book. The emotions were high throughout the book. Luca, and Valentina had a one-night stand. It never stated, but I can only assume he said some ugly things to her the next day. She slapped him and left Venice making a vow to herself never to see Luca again. She moved to Australia to live with her dad. She had never been close to her mother. Her mother borrowed money from Luca, and now Luca wants it back. If not, he will take her home away from her. Valentina’s mother calls up and begs her to come and talk to Luca. She didn’t want to go. It was her dad that said she should try to help her mom out. Luca wanted revenge. He has never forgotten the slap across his face. Luca makes a deal, one month of Valentina in his bed, and he will help her mother out. Valentina was ready to say no way, and walk away. She found out her dad would lose his farm if she didn’t make the deal. Her dad was a good man, and had offered to help out his ex-wife. There was no way she was going to stand by and watch her dad lose everything he had worked so hard for. During that month she and her mom talked and got to know one another. She understood her mom more. Hate for Luca turned into passion, and passion by the end of the book turned into love. It turned out to be a really good book.

A story like many others in HP-land, but with good images of Venice (Murano visit, cemetery visit in an island). I like these small details, although they can be compared to a travel guide, but for me are always positive.

Luca and Valentina have a sex encounter after which he treats her like a slut. She slaps him and run back to Australia. She is pregnant and loses her child. Three years later H has prepared his revenge: she will be his mistress for one month to save her father’s farm. He plans to dump her publicly when she thinks he’s in love with her. But h books her flight and tells him she’s leaving. Messy ending. Many many things don’t work here. First, H is angry because she slapped him after he called her a slut out of nothing and plans a convoluted and difficult revenge for a thing like that? He is past thirty not six! How can a banker, a businessman who as the word says should be very busy, a grown up man, have the time and the mind for a thing like that?? Not believable. Then there is the miscarriage at 5 months, a very sad thing, still it is not treated with the due consideration. The blackmailing part, where she tells him she hates him but then enjoys herself whenever she goes out with him. He is angry with her but it is immediately clear that he is completely besotted instead. He doesn’t act like a grown up man, he seems a teenager with hormone problems and self esteem issues. He is sulky and scowling and very very touchy. What a bore. I didn’t find him sexy or interesting at all. And when she talks seriously about something he tells her how beautiful her eyes are when she’s angry (roll my eyes)... and this should be a banker? I don’t want to have my money in his bank for sure! The heroine is a little bit better, she has a backbone and I liked the scene where she goes to his house and tells him she accept his proposal, she turns the tables and seduces him instead of playing the drama queen. Not a difficult book to read but it’s a little shallow and messy.

Luca is intent on revenge against Valentina for perceived wrongs. I always love a book where the hero assumes he knows something, exacts revenge and finds out he is in love. Enjoy the book.

Well... I generally really enjoyed reading this but for some reason I don't think I would give it five stars. The passion and depict of the characters was one to behold but one certain thing niggled at that back of my mind.
Throughout the book you hear of Luca's plot and plan against her for some sort of a revenge and it constantly built up the anticipation in me, keeping me wondering what Tina could possibly have done. It was kind of a huge disappointment when it is revealed at the end and left me in dismay.
It struck me as really, extremely petty that he would go through all that torment and harsh behaviour towards her for the sake of some 'hurtful' rejection from a woman after she'd spent the night with him on a one night stand-Ego and male pride considered. It doesn't seem what you might call 'realistic' and I cant help but mention that 'Hey, it was a ONE-NIGHT-STAND annnndd it was a single slap from a lady you'd probably never see again AFTER she slept with you!?'
Maybe its just me, but I think that if the secretive reason behind Luca's thirst for vengeance was elaborated to something a bit more... well, dramatic? -Or at least something more serious that something like a literal slap to his male pride- It would have made the story more inclining to give it 5 stars.
My personal and own view is above but don't let me stop you from giving it a go. It was a decently enjoyable read despite my opinion. x

Bartering Her Innocence by Trish Morey will make you cry, will make you laugh and will make you fall in love.
Valentina Henderson has always tried to prove that she is nothing like the mother who abandoned her and her father when she was but a small child. Entitled Prick? I think those two words are the best to describe our piece of crap hero. Everything else works well in the book but him. He is literally does everything to hurt the heroine but is mad when she reacts how he wants her to! The reason she left in the first place? Cause he said something awful. Then blackmails her by using both of her parents against her. Then when she is getting ready to leave still is planning on PUBLICLY humiliating her! Listen dude, she just slapped you and left last time, why are you jacking this all up to 100? Then accuses her of some ghastly shit! And refuses to listen. His 'excuses' for everything are very weak and don't make you get where he was coming from at all. I liked the heroine! I liked her father, even the mother who is dumb as a pile of rocks sometimes added a different flare. The locations was wonderful. And everything the heroine went through, you rooted for her. The weak link is the hero and his sorry ass excuses. Heroine, stay in Australia this a-hole doesn't deserve to be with you.

I don't like the plot of this story it's so unreal (lol It's really is a FICTION) The Heroin is a martyr while the Hero is so selfish, mean Billionare. I don't think he deserve to have a wife like her she's such an angel. In fairness I like the way the author put so much emotion on the heroin's pain while she talk about her lost son. Anyway HP always ends in happy ending though I can hardly believe for the heroin to forgive the hero who make her life miserable for 3 years so easly as if it's all her fault! All for love that's it no question ask!

Um, all kinds of no. This book just made me angry.
And she didn't barter her innocence.
And to top it all off, in the story, the female lead's mother collects Murano glass and the male lead's cousin owns a glass factory. There's a scene where the female lead watches a demonstration at the factory where they make a glass horse. They popped it off the punty, put it on a table for a bit of cooling and then handed it over to the female lead, who is still sitting in the audience, while it was still warm.........Uh...huh...

This book did nothing for me. It is a typical Harlequin with the blackmail plot, and nothing else to offer. Hero blackmails heroine into bed for a stupid reason, heroine accepts, hero realizes he has misjudged her. Throw in a bitch of a mother, a kind father and a difficult past for the hero. And you got the story.
Yes, there are some emotional moments towards the end, but even that is nothing new. Been there, done that.

Luca was too much of a b****** to be redeemable. The explanation at the end was no justification at all, rather it was a typical hollow, false and egoistic explanation given by just another hateful, chauvinistic, misanthropic Neanderthal that weak women gladly accept to satiate their unrealistic dreams of love. No guy who loves a woman can be so unfeeling and hurtful towards her and for no real reason at all.
