A calling he never wanted.
A co-defender he can't ignore.
A choice that changes everything.

As if Hamilton Dinger needs any more frustration at the moment. Not only has he accepted his duty as a starlight warrior, he's got swim meets to prepare for, his little brother to babysit, and an annoying new girl in his class. Plus he's got his 'mentor' dragon, Elysian, on his back every chance he gets, and his 'co-defender,' Starry Knight, urging him to quit the superhero business after every battle.

As the Seven Deadly Sinisters and their leader, Orpheus, search for new ways to gather power, Ham finds both betrayal and friendship in unexpected places. Desperately searching for a way he can get stronger, he finds his own inner struggles costing him the most as he attempts to keep the rest of the city safe.

Will Hamilton realize his potential in the power of trust? Will he be able make peace with Starry Knight, or will their quarrels be the downfall of them both?

FROM THE BOOK:

I found every layer of myself chiseled away, the blackened cynicism of my heart breaking open and oozing the kind of fear which only stems from the deepest sort of longing. "Don't leave me."

And then I kissed her.

FROM THE AUTHOR:

Continue reading through the epic fantasy series from young adult author C. S. Johnson, as fallen Stars/superheroes Wingdinger, Starry Knight, along with their dragon Elysian, fight evil as much as they fight with each other.

Perfect for young teenagers or disaffected college students, or adults who enjoy some satire mixed in with some sweetness!

WHAT REVIEWERS ARE SAYING:

Johnson really manages to make the main character's growth very believable. Even starting from where he left of in the previous book it is clear that Hamilton Dinger - just like all the rest of us real human beings - still has a long way to go.  ~ Jake Yaniak, author of Morality is the Problem

Calling (The Starlight Chronicles #2) by C.S. Johnson and narrated by Nicholas Santasier is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary. I really liked the first book but the action hero part started at the very end of the book but this book started with the action hero stuff right away! Again this has the self centered Hamilton, full of himself, that has obtained his super powers, and has the help of a shifting dragon. He also has another sharp shooting pretty archer that thinks he is a menace to himself and mankind basically. Of course there are the arch villains! This is a fun book and I enjoyed it more than the first. The first book I enjoyed how full of himself Ham was but I thought teens would be the only ones enjoying the book. This book takes the book further and goes into super hero territory where those enjoying that genre will enjoy this book. It is also witty, snarky but fun, and lots of humor sprinkled through out. We get to see growth in Hamilton too. Learning to grow up a bit in many ways, subtle but he is getting there. Power didn't corrupt him like it might others. Of course he already thought he was next to God, lol. Fun book.
The narrator was the same but his inflections were better in this book and seemed more in tune with the characters. I still think a different voice would be better but it worked.

It had been a while since I read C.S. Johnson's Slumbering (book I of The Starlight Chronicles), so I was a bit concerned that I wouldn't remember enough of the story to get into the sequel.

Fortunately, Johnson does an excellent job pulling you back into the life of Hamilton Dinger without having to retread every event and every character in the previous book. I remember when I finally read through the Harry Potter series I had the suspicion that the books got longer and longer simply because of all the past events that needed to be recounted. 'Calling' doesn't do this, and before I knew it I found myself enrolled in High School alongside Hamilton and his quirky friends.

As with the previous work, there are strong spiritual themes. These are clothed in the language of super heroes, and so they avoid some of the cliches that one normally encounters in religious fiction. It is kept just out of sight, where it can be sensed, but where it doesn't interrupt the story. You can tell throughout the story that the moral/philosophical/spiritual ideas and emotional angst the characters wrestle with are more than just plot devices. The author has clearly thought them through and felt them for herself.

I mentioned in my previous review that the author on occasion passed from the past tense to the present when recounting some of the more intense action sequences. It is effective when it appears; and so far the only other author I have seen use this technique is Jules Verne (as I learned recently while reading his Journey to the Center of the Earth). So Johnson is in good company there.

One last noteworthy detail is the fact that Johnson really manages to make the main character's growth very believable. Even starting from where he left of in the previous book it is clear that Hamilton Dinger - just like all the rest of us real human beings - still has a long way to go.

This is NOT my favorite genre by a long shot. I don't particularly like first person narration (the humor of watching Hamilton's cool-kid mind makes this enjoyable, however), I don't like reading about high school (the realism of high school life makes the reading nostalgic), I don't like super heroes (the focus on interpersonal matters makes this an interesting setting nonetheless). I don't know exactly what it is, but somehow C.S. Johnson manages to pull me into the story anyway. And, honestly, I am looking forward to more.

The world is crazy about super heroes these days thanks to the movies. When I was a kid you hid your comic books and science fiction novels in order to escape ridicule. The genre and the world has come a long way since then. It seems like everyone has jumped on the super hero bandwagon but once in a while a good book or movie makes good natured fun of the genre and does a great job of it. Calling by C.S. Johnson is one of those books. It pokes fun of the idea of superheroes by showing us a more realistic look at what the life of someone with powers might be like. I liked it. I like Wingdinger. I like his girlfriend Gwen. I like his teenage friends and the way they keep him running ragged while he tries to balance being a teenager and saving the world.

Most of all I like the villains. They are hilariously pathetic and sometimes their hearts just aren’t in it but they always keep you laughing. Calling is not the story of some noble American teenager rising to meet the challenge of great power and great responsibility. This is the funny story of a kid with all the problems and absurd situations in his life that we all have plus an obligation to drop everything and fight for the world at the drop of a hat. The satire is heavy and hard hitting. The comedy will keep you laughing all the way to the end. It was a fast delightful read for me.

Well, our charters are developing into more responsible adult now. At least by the end of this installment our lead charities began to think of others and their feelings and even toned down his ego a bit. He actually learned a Hugh lesson from life experiences.
Still clean, a some kissing but nothing more for those who like it that way. Not as much blood filled battles, but the people who were affected did quarantine for an unknown illness caused by their souls being drained. They did all recover. There was also more religious connotations added which doesn’t bother me, but those that are, remember the author is a Christian writer. Over all safe for younger young adults
A bit of a simple storyline but fun to read. Not too much suspense, which makes it a great story for a hot lazy summer read. Gets you away to another place for a bit to take away your own personal issues. (For me a squawky cockatoo who wants to have me take him out so he can destroy my tablet. 😂)

High school Superheroes

I enjoyed book two much better than the first installment. The character arcs are starting to develop more strongly and they are actually beginning to learn something. Hamilton especially is finally beginning to realize how badly he treats people. There is a great subplot between him and his best friend which I really appreciated.

This is a really fun second book that picked up where Slumbering ended. The author does just the right amount of tie-in between the first book and this one without becoming repetitive. You know what's going on, you know who the characters are, and you can enjoy the book equally if you're just starting the series or if you are coming back for more after the first book.

The main character remains flawed and somewhat annoying. There is a good amount of sarcasm, snark, and humor added on top of the super hero/ fantasy story, which keeps things interesting. This book seemed to have many more religious undertones to it, which I found off-putting. I wish that the religious aspect hadn't been present at all, but I understand its use for the story. High school and YA themes remained, but this book had more of the coming-of-age type of YA which made it seem a bit more grown up. The main character definitely develops and grows throughout this book, though he's a long way from finished maturing.

The narrator was the same at the first book, and he still isn't my favorite. He seems to have grown a bit, just like the characters he was reading, though. He added more enthusiasm and adjusted some inflections to make it a more pleasant listen, at least for me.

I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this honest review.

OMGoodness gracious!!!! It’s magnificent!!! For me, it’s an easy 5 stars for just having sucked me in right from the very start, and having never let me go. I didn’t put it down (at least… not by choice lol). I'm not going to write a re-cap of this story, since there is already a re-cap posted. Instead, I'm just going to REALLY, REALLY advise you to pick up this series and start reading.
I have no doubt that ANYONE who reads these novels, young or old, will be able to connect with each character, and be swept off to another time, and place!
Happy Reading...off to the next book!

Hamilton is finally 'waking up' from his narcissistic ways.....yes! Still not sure where it is going next, but I need to get the next book to find out!

Hamilton Dinger doesn't take his Calling very seriously much to the dismay of Elysian and Starry Knight. He'd rather be more popular and focused on his schoolwork instead. He abandons his Calling and thinks his life is better off. Only to discover that his Calling is more important than he originally thought it was. He's determined to regain his Calling and do better as a Starlight Warrior. Can Hamilton really change himself? Can he regain his Calling? Find out in Calling.

By far one of my most favorite young adult book & audio book series!!!

"Calling,” is the second book in the Starlight Chronicles series.  I received a copy of the ebook & audio book from the author, C.S. Johnson and just loved the whole story line and characters.   I love the way that this series is written.  I find that each book is written with an underlying meaning and lesson learned, which is great, for a YA book.  It isn’t just a story, but there is also a form of guidance and meaning throughout the writing and each book in the series.  It has been very strategically written, in my opinion.  Hamilton Dinger is a typical teen, and I mean at times, funny, cocky, confident, crude and at times very frustrating lol. His character really grows on you throughout the series and the book is well written, through the characters eyes.    In this book, I find that Hamilton really struggles with commitment to himself and the greater good.  He also comes to some major realizations about himself that are hard to accept, however, Hamilton is a strong willed character and by mid to end of the story has learned many lessons from the mistakes he has made.  You have to make mistakes, in order to learn from them and commitment to what is important is a very valuable life choice that should never be thrown away.

Overall, I couldn’t of spent my time better.  After I read the ebook, I listened to the audio book, narrated by Nicholas Santasier. He did an outstanding job. If you dont have time to pickup a book, try listening to an audio book. I love to listen to audiobooks every morning during my morning commute!
Overall, this was a wonderful story and I cannot wait to finish the others…Happy reading!!!

First off, read the first book in the series, because it's also great, but nothing wrong with starting here, then you won't be able to stop yourself from finishing the other 5 books in this series, because you'll want to devour them that much. It's such a great book to read, and both the young audience it's aimed at and older readers, like me, who like fantasy and superhero genres, will thoroughly enjoy it.

An absolutely fantastic continuation to the first novel in this series. Characters are grabbing and entertaining, whether you like their personalities or not. The characters relate to each other in very human reactions/ responses. Such a great series with a twist on religion, faith, interactions with great underlying messages.

Really fun. I thought it was pretty clever and I liked how it continued the series from the first book. I thought he did a good job with the action and fantasy. Great fun, and clean, too, so that's impressive. Recommended for people who like superhero stuff.

Super heroes and dragon... what an adventure!

A vast improvement to book 1, reading this book was a much quicker and enjoyable treat. I am pretty sure what i found disagreeable in book 1 was done out of necessity. I am am quite anxious to read book 3.

Good read

I only gave it 3 stars because the main character is a bit of a Jerk. It's like the guy you love to hate. Good story line and well written. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

The perfect follow-up to Slumbering. Can't wait till the third book is out. New characters, and a deeper look at some old ones. Plenty of fun, action, and high school activities.

Hamilton has a lot on his plate, what with having to babysit his brother on the evening of his date with Gwen, the girl he has been dreaming of dating for ages, the swim meets to excel in, a horrid girl who gave him a new name to be called by, and who just rubbed him up the wrong way all the time, sitting behind him in class, and a changeling dragon mentor who never took his side. He decided to stop being the superhero wingdinger, a role he had never asked for, and which kept calling him to do his duty at the most inopportune moments, that's it so he quit. However when his best friend Mickey turns into a monster during the swim meets, and the seven sinisters and Orpheus attack the city once again, Ham had to take action. This decision which he took by himself this time brought him face to face with Adonaias, and he asked to be granted faith, courage and strength to do what was needed of him. Then Aletheia, the guardian of memory, turned up and gave him his sealing sword, one which would enable him to capture the hearts of the sinisters, and he was told he was the fallen star of Mercy. Furthermore he and Starry Knight finally accepted to work as a team and things happened between them which changed Ham's idea about Gwen and where he was going with that relationship. Wow so much happening, and Ham's transformation can only make him more likeable I hope. I am really enjoying the Starlight Chronicles which are jam packed with action, superheroes battling the forces of evil and teenager angst and goings on to make these books such a fun read!

This series only gets better with each book! I don't see Hamilton as offensive, I see him as selfish and needing to grow up but wow he is amusing in his thoughts! He's a typical teen trying to avoid his calling and live his life on HIS terms. However, his attitude towards his friends does get worse in the plot until there is a showdown at a swim meet, YIKES!

I seriously got more annoyed with Gwen. Yes, she's a nice girl, but she can't make up her mind about whether to date Hamilton or not. I was really hoping he would break up with her, she just doesn't get it with him and his life will not get less complicated as things progress.

As egotistical and selfish as Hamilton is, there are three parts in the story where he makes up for all that. One of those scenes he is powerless but still goes TOWARDS the danger. I was glad he made up with his friend.

Starry Knight is definitely my favorite character in all of this, although Elysian is also so funny and well written!

LOVE Mrs. Smithe and the banter Raiya has with Hamilton in her class!

I got this book when it was available for free and so glad I finally got the chance to read it, really enjoying this series!

Narrator Rating: 2 stars

I was given a copy of Calling in audio format in exchange for my honest review.

Calling is the second installment in the Starlight Chronicles. It continues to follow Dinger as he decides to "quit" being a starlight defender.  Being a defender became too much for him. He struggles with balancing a new girlfriend, school, swimming, his friends, and even his mom trying to sue Starry Night and Wingdinger on behalf of the city. As events unfold, Dinger slowly starts regretting his decision. Some of his cockiness starts to dissipate, even though he is still highly arrogant. I look forward to his continued growth in becoming an actual likable character. Even though I do not currently like him, his character traits are vital to the story so it works out and continues to be enjoyable. I really liked that this story took to the theme of what happens when people become jealous and the monsters they become. I am curious if Dinger has always been so narcissistic or at what point did it happen in his life where he felt so entitled.

I reviewed book one from an ebook format. This is the first book in the series I have reviewed as the audio version. I do not like the narrator. His voices all sound the same so sometimes it is hard to know who is talking. Also, the editing on this audio was not the greatest. There were several parts where the narrator stopped reading and picked up again, like he had lost his place. He also stumbled on a couple of sentences/words. I would listen to the story in parts, because it takes a little while to get used to the narration style. I will continue to review the books in this series for the audio format, but I can't guarantee I will continue to listen to the narrator in future books. I feel I am being over generous for the narrator's rating. I hope as he gets more comfortable in the story line, it becomes better. But also, in his defense, the editing is the fault of whomever is in charge for cutting out those bits and pieces where there are pauses or mistakes that are supposed to help the story flow smoothly. That is why I gave the generous 2. I can't fault someone for making a mistake in the narration, when whomever edits is supposed to cut those parts out.

Even though I enjoyed the books, I think the narrator may be a miss for some people. That is why I give a narrator rating as well. The story was great, fast paced, never dull, and action packed. It is uniquely original in a sea full of the same styles of stories.

I look forward to watching the chemistry between Starry Night and Wingdinger unfold. I have my guesses of who Starry Night is, and am anxiously waiting until her identity is revealed. I have a sneaky suspicion that Dinger is not going to be too thrilled. I wont give away who I think it is, because I think readers and listeners should make their guesses themselves, because it is highly entertaining!! I also hope that there is more development in the Seven Deadly Sinisters and Orpheus. They are very intriguing and I look forward to learning more of their back story (hopefully) throughout the series.

Hamilton is back, and I couldn't be happier. I devoured the first book in this series and was ecstatic to jump right into the next one. I am both happy and sad that I have just discovered the worlds of author C.S. Johnson. Sad that I didn't know about these books earlier, but so glad that I can just binge this entire series one, right after the other. Hamilton is the kind of character I love to hate. He is just so wonderful and annoying. I cannot wait to watch Hamilton grow and see what he becomes. As if Hamilton isn't a good enough reason to indulge in these book, Raiya is so vibrant. I have never met a character I adored quite as much as her. If you're looking for a terrific world to immerse yourself in, I cannot recommend this series enough. I gotta go, Hamilton is calling and I have a world to fall into. Yay, five more books to go.

Full of action. Fighting against evil sometime you have doubts that you can do it. But when your friends are in trouble you are going to jump in help right?

Yeah so maybe you and you friend are not in good speaking terms, are you going to leave them hanging when they need you the most?

Dinger is going through so many changes. Trying to keep his grades up, being in the swim team, trying to find time for the people he cares about and being a superhero can get very tiring.

Will he make a decision that will effect everything and everyone he cares about?

Find out the answers in the this book and more.

This series I can't put down.
