David Owain Hughes is a word-slinger of horror and crime fiction, who grew up on trashy b-movies from the age of five which helped rapidly instil in him a vivid imagination. He’s had multiple short stories published in various online magazines and anthologies, along with articles, reviews and interviews. He’s written for This Is Horror, Blood Magazine, and Horror Geeks Magazine.

Hughes is the author of six horror novels, four short story collections and a plethora of novellas. Although he predominately writes within the bracket of horror and its multiple sub-genres, he’s recently branched out into crime fiction and is slowly carving out a superb series of crime/noir thrillers under the umbrella title of South Wales.

There are horror books and there are HORROR BOOKS. The difference between the two is how scared you are to leave your bedroom after finishing it at 3am and needing to go to the bathroom. This book scared me, really actually scared me and I read a lot of horror and it doesn't happen very often.

I waited a very long time to go to the bathroom (not recommended).

This one is not for those that balk at profanity, graphic scenes, gore and splatter or killing scenes that make your eyes pop out of your head. But if you are game, I so double dare you to read this book. It's absolutely fantastic and it's unlike anything I have read in a long time.

Meet Crystal and Harry – lovers who work in the entertainment business: after murdering three critics for poor reviews, they decide to skip town and head for the coastline. Hooked? I was.

Sitting in a van, driving across the beautiful countryside you find in Wales, a book is found in the glove compartment (why is it called that, nobody puts gloves in it really do they?) and starts to read the stories. As the stories get read, you the reader get to be part of each one. Flip me some of the stories were so super scary, so in your face but with some twists that were just so well done.

I quickly established that the book, the van's passengers an the journey were all beautifully connected. But by what? And why? The author keeps you guessing. The stories are short and have sharp quick endings, but dear reader there is a reason for this. All shall be revealed.

Then....

There is a particular reveal in this book that made my head spin (not literally, that's a bit horrid), my eyes were popping out of my head and in the dark, reading my dim lit Kindle with my two cats plopped on my lap I said "what the...." and I had to actually read the paragraph more than once. Then I set the Kindle aside and just let it sink in. It's brilliance, that's what I thought. Could not see that coming in a BILLION SQUILLION YEARS. Very clever.

I recovered, back to the book. Hairs on my arms standing on end. Even my cats were scared to I am sure. As the van drives on and more and more scenes of horror, murder, death, twisted events and weird freaky stuff was revealed I was totally hooked. I read this book in one sitting and could not stop reading.

David Owain Hughes has gone where many authors don't go. The book is really creative as well as readable. It's got some very clever parts to it like the file records of the inmates at the mental asylum where Crystal is heading to see her dear sister.

What terrifed me was at the end of the book there are stunning hand drawn graphic novel, comic like artwork of some of the stories I had read in action. I had been scared reading the words but by golly seeing the images really truly freaked me out. Incredible artwork too, very good.

I don't usually delve into the more graphic gore type of horror but in this case I am so glad that I did. I just really enjoyed this book, it's true that David is no Stephen King, but I have read some King books I hate recently, I didn't hate this, I really liked it.

I dare you to go to the dark places and be suitably chilled and scared. Will you take up my dare? Or will you run?

I didn't care about perfect writing as I read this book, no time to worry about anything like that, it's just a book that sucks you in to every word, every scene, every twist until your mind is a splattered thing alongside other things in the book. Pure entertainment.

5 paw prints from Booklover Catlady. A very unique and enjoyable journey into terror and fear. I read it in the dark, not sure I would recommend that. I am now very keen to read David's other works. Very keen indeed.

I went into White Walls and Straightjackets expecting the standard novel format, and instead found myself reading a much more “unique” approach. We start out with our main characters, Crystal and Harry, leaving the scene of their most recent murder. Getting into a van, Harry suggests going to the town of Porthcawl to get away for a while. When searching the glove compartment for a map, he finds a mysterious book of stories, complete with illustrations. There is no author listed, and neither Harry nor Crystal have any idea where the book came from.

This is where things start to get interesting! Harry reads aloud the stories in the book, that are artfully woven into our overall tale. These added stories are a brilliant touch, spicing up Crystal and Harry’s own reign of terror with those of the equally twisted individuals in the book. In between each “story”, the action involving our main characters continues on its own journey.

Warning–this book is not for those who are bothered by gruesome scenes, sexual comments/situations, and rough language. However, for those looking for something different, this may be the book for you. An example of one of my favorite parts comes from Crystal when she was fueled by jealousy:

“”You want something stiff in your mouth, suck on this!” Crystal yelled, ramming the nozzle down the girl’s open mouth until it wouldn’t go any further. Spew burst out at the side of the pump and trickled down her mouth and chin….”

The stories continue to get even creepier, and a name or location occasionally rings a bell for our main characters, who remain as mysterious to us as some of the villains in the “stories”. Crystal comments after one particularly nasty tale when they are casually discussing various ways to murder:

“”Yes, and an inventive kill.”

“True, Harry agreed. “A petrol pump down the throat ain’t bad, either!””

This is the way these two interact with each other throughout the entire novel–a series of dark humor (that had me laughing aloud at times), and condescending comments that somehow manage to convey their commitment to each other.

When events finally start fitting together in this puzzle of a novel–you’ll be left looking back at the series of situations in awe of David Hughes. All of the pieces incorporated here take on a sinister new meaning, one so artful drawn that it was difficult to pinpoint just when things started to blend into the current reality.

This was a graphic, gory, and yes, a fun book to read. If you’re looking for something with a unique approach, this may be the book for you.

Recommended.

This book is very different to anything I have ever read before, both in format and writing style.

It is like a series of short stories linked together by Harry and Crystal, who find a book in the glovebox of their van, and decide to read it to enliven the journey while driving to visit Crystal's sister Sam, who has been incarcerated in a mental institution for many years.

Harry and Crystal are at first amused, then unsettled as they find themselves appearing in several of the stories.......for it means that someone knows who and what they really are.

This would have been a 5* book for me except that I found the violence a little too graphic, and at times I felt that it appeared purely for the sake of violence and less as an attribute to the story. I prefer a little more subtlety and inference...leaving my imagination to do the work.

And sorry David, but I wasn't scared or frightened, not one little bit.....and yes, I did read it late at night.

Having said that I found most of the book enjoyable and I look forward to reading more of David's work in the future.

Thank you to author David Owain Hughes, VIP Reviews, and Booklover Catlady Publicity for the gift of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I need to start by saying that this book was very different than anything I have read recently. As younger person I read horror story anthologies and that was probably as close as I came to Hughes White Walls. Although I don't read a lot of horror, I have watched a ton! From my earliest memories I loved scary movies, not just the blockbuster hits but maybe even especially, B-Horror movies. The ones you can find now-a-days in the RedBox (in my area this is a DVD rental kiosk outside supermarkets), or on Netflix, with new titles appearing weekly. This book, in my humble opinion, would make a fabulous movie! Although I can honestly say, that even as a child, I have never (seriously not once) have I ever been scared by a movie. I remember one little girl wasn't allowed to sleep over my house because I watched Wes Cravens New Nightmare the last time she was over. Books don't scare me either. So I understand that I am in the vast minority in that. So no, this book did not scare me. (the only show I was frightened of as a child was Unsolved Mysteries and America's Most Wanted, which my mom would watch. Both discussed crimes in which the bad guys haven't been caught and I was afraid that they could come to my house. I knew those guys were real!!

So back to the book (sorry for that aside). This book may not have scared me but it most definitely entertained me!!!! I smiled, I laughed, I said , "Oh, No WAY!!". It was loads of fun for a horror-lover like me. The best comparison I can make is to the 90's TV show Tales From the Crypt. I could definitely imagine the plot of this book as one of the "Tales"

The Plot
Crystal and Harry are entertainers. They have just committed some grisly crimes against some critics who have handed down bad reviews. They must skip town. On their way out of town they decide to stop at the mental hospital for the criminally insane that houses Crystal's younger sister. As they begin their drive out, they discover a book of stories in the glove compartment. Neither of them put it there. Weird right? Harry starts reading. At first they are just entertained. Then they realize, they have cameos in some of these stories. Are these stories true???

I don't want to ruin anyone's fun but here is some of what you will come across: Santa Klaws (Santa Claus' evil brother who wants him dead), Mr. Tickles (a clown with a not so traditional side-kick), a talking ventriloquism doll, even the author himself gets a cameo!!

My Thoughts
Although I wouldn't want to compare this book to others I have read in other genres (for instance, I've given 4 stars to many of Patterson's books and the Rizzoli and Isles series) I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants a break in their normal routine or those who love horror (books or movies) David Owain Hughes knows how to entertain! I will be looking forward to reading more of his work in the future!!

Much thanks to the author and Booklover Catlady Publicity for the opportunity to read and honestly review this book.

Review: WHITE WALLS AND STRAIGHTJACKETS by David Owain Hughes

I am addressing this review primarily to fans of "extreme horror" [don't hide--you know who you are]. If you've read any of Welsh author David Owain Hughes' anthologized short stories [for example, "His Name Was Simone" in BLACK CANDY Halloween anthology, or his piece in the BAH! HUMBUG! Christmas charity anthology ("Little Sh** ts"--my elision), or any of his other work, you already know he is an author not to turn your back on (nor his characters!) It's no holds barred, nothing held back, and over the top with Mr. Hughes--and I love it. Could not put the book down!

WHITE WALLS AND STRAIGHTJACKETS is over the top horror couched in a plot arc, then explicated through short stories, contained in a mysterious "found" book. If you enjoy Crystal and her psychotic wooden ventriloquist' s mannequin, the foul-mouthed, abusive, Harry, worry not! These performing artists/vicious killers reappear in ESCAPEES AND FEVERED MINDS, along with a cast of characters you hope are only fictional.

This was just an incredible book! Very unique in the way it was written and thoroughly entertaining!! I just love the way the stories flowed and I loved the little details and pictures added at the end. This is not for you if you are squeamish or opposed to gore! But I just loved it so. Add a new author to my favorites!

Thanks to Booklover Catlady Publicity for sending a copy for me to review for an honest review.

This is the first book I've read by this author David Owains Hughes.

Polite notice, this book has graphic sexual content, gore and profanities.

Horror isn't usually a genre I read, I love watching horror films and could easily see this playing out infront of me as a movie as i read the book.

The book mainly revolves around Crystal and Harry, who are engertainment artists with a liking to killing on the side.

The book is set with short stories that Crystal and Harry find in the glove compartment. It slowly comes to light these are linked somehow.

The stories are full of graphically written killings, sex, and more profanity, there is a plot within the plot and the book is full of psychos!

I read this book very quickly as i was drawn in to how and why....i am sure i missed a few pointers.

The style of writing is consistent throughout and totally bonkers at times as to work out what is real.

I am left at the end slightly baffled, which is excellent as it really takes in how well this book is written.

The whole book is cleverly pulled off.
Don't miss the great artwork at the end of the book.

This book didn't make me feel terror,it compelled me to carry on reading it.

Different to other horror stories I've read before but I really liked it. Crystal and Harry, are killers who want a new start after leaving the scene of their latest killing. As they are driving away they discover a mysterious book in the car. They have no idea where this book has come from and it doesn't include the author's name. (This is when I thought the story got really interesting)

The stories that Harry starts to read I thought were very creepy and scary. This is a book that is very dark and is filled with many twists that I really enjoyed. Some of them I found very shocking.

I liked the records at the end of the patients at the hospital.

I would recommend this book if horror is your favourite genre. It different to other horror stories I've come across. I think if you like them then you will enjoy this. I wouldn't recommend this if you don't like gory or graphic scenes in stories.

Thank you to Booklover Catlady Publicity as I won a copy of this in a giveaway.

When David Owain Hughes writes a book, you know you are in for a hell of a ride. This book simply bleeds originality, and twists on every page. I read this in a couple of hours, which for someone with the attention span of a shrew, says a lot about this book. His characters are bizarre and twisted, and the scenarios even more so. Extremely well crafted.

I received a free copy from the author and his publicist in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, David Owain Hughes!
For once, I am speechless. This is a deeply disturbing but amazing book. I don't know whether to give it a million stars or zero. It is a cross between pulp fiction (the genre, not the movie), cheesy horror shows like Tales from the Crypt, and simply the most twisted, sick horror you could ever read. The way it weaves all the stories together is masterful, the twists and turns could be ridiculous, if they didn't make so much sense. It is full of gore, blood, guts, sex (not the romantic kind) and profanity. Last night I dreamed that my cat was missing both arms and the blood from his arteries was showering me. I am blaming David Owain Hughes for this. Which takes me back to my not knowing how many stars I should give this book. I feel like I should be appalled at the content and say it is a horrible book, but I completely loved it, which makes me worry that maybe I’m a psychopath and don't know it. As an extreme horror fan, this book has shaken me, so I have to give it 5 stars (just because Goodreads doesn't have the million stars option). Don't miss the illustrations in the back, they are awesome, even if they are nowhere as gruesome as what you will picture in your head while reading. If you are not squeamish, you will enjoy the ride, just be forewarned: it will give you nightmares.

White Walls and Straitjackets is a relatively short read and would say it was more of a novella.

To start with I took an instant dislike to Harry as it is obvious straight away he has no respect for woman what so ever and just generally seems like an idiot. Crystal I actually thought seemed a nice but dim lady but I couldn't have been more wrong!

Crystal and Harry set off on a journey and to kill time Harry reads a book, that has been found in the vehicle they are driving, to Crystal whilst she is driving. To start with when the story flicks back to the main two characters I actually found those parts more gruesome than the stories themselves.

The story goes back and forth between the characters and the book and as you get further into the story you start to realise that things are not as straight forward as they seem.

White Walls and Straitjackets makes for quite a gruesome and dark read. Best of all though it is really twisted and there are some great surprises in there which from the start of the book you just would not expect. Will certainly read more by this author.

Many thanks to Booklover Catlady Publicity & Reviews and the author as I won a copy of this book in a give away over on Maxines book page.

What starts off as a collection of unrelated short stories, soon begins to form a web of interlinked tales, with characters from one story reappearing in another, courtesy of a book found in the glove compartment of a van. Central to the whole tale is the odd but terrifying pairing of Crystal and Harry; she, oozing sex and violence, he, foul-mouthed and domineering and the only thing that appears to frighten Crystal into submission. But what is the truth behind the dynamics of this relationship and is it all it seems?

As Crystal and Harry drive through Wales on their way to Porthcawl, the reader is treated to tales of sexual perversion, delusion, psychosis and voyeurism – think Tales of the Unexpected revved up by several gory notches with axes, chainsaws and hammers and there you have White Walls and Straitjackets......................

To say that I found this book unnerving is an understatement and it is not for the squeamish or the easily scared, but if like me you relish a good gorefest with some fascinating twists, then this is for you. The main thing I took from this book is that Wales isn’t going to be on my list of places to visit any time soon, as the only sane people in this book appear to have been sectioned, while there’s a psychopath called Norm (great choice of name!!) on the loose!

What perturbed me is what sort of mind could produce the tales in this book and wouldn’t they have to be a little disturbed to think up such scenarios? The author even delights in inserting himself into the book!! The Tyger by William Blake came to mind............

What the hammer? What the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?

I was given this book by the publicist in exchange for an honest review. The cover art is superb and on that alone I would have been interested in this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and stories found within the pages of this book. It leaned more on the gore side rather than the "I need to hide under my bed because I am scared sh*tless" type of horror book. There was a very clever twist as well that literally had me shouting "OMFG" as I certainly did not see it coming.

Crystal and Harry are definitely the two characters that hold each of the stories together. We meet others along the way, each with an important part to play but Crystal and Harry are the ones that will stand out in your mind...well after you have finished this book. They sort of reminded me of Mickey and Mallory Knox from the film "Natural Born Killers". Absolutely no conscious, kill for the sake of killing as they get an extreme rush out of it and God help you if you piss them off!

The ending was brilliant as well. I will not spoil it but can say that it wraps the book up nicely and ties into the title perfectly.

I would definitely recommend this book to fans of the horror genre but would suggest you wait until the current price comes down as it is a little bit steep for the paperback which has some fabulous artwork in it. For the stories themselves the e-book is priced just right.

This is a fantastic collection of gruesome and disturbing short stories. But what really sets it apart from most short story collections is that they are contained within and a part of the entire book. I don’t believe I have ever seen this before.

White Walls and Straitjackets follows Crystal and Harry as they are driving to visit Crystal’s sister. As they make their journey, Harry finds a book in the glove compartment and reads the disturbing tales to Crystal as she drives. This was an inventive device that made these stories read like a full length book. It creating a unifying factor that brought everything together.

Now, with regards to the writing…David Owain Hughes is a disturbed individual and has created some stories that will shock and appall you. If you’re anything like me, you will be looking for more books from David Owain Hughes. He has pushed the limits of sexual violence and has created a fantastic story to leave his readers wanting more.

Crystal and Harry are a fantastic duo. Their banter goes from comedic to completely inappropriate to clinically insane. They are very well developed and I think that there could be more from Crystal and Harry in the future, and if so, I’ll be there!

My review of ' White Walls and Straightjackets'

So, I received this book in exchange for an honest review,

White Walls and Straightjackets is a book about a 'couple' reading a book, but its not convoluted, its written really well with very distinct crossovers, so it isn't confusing, but is really fun to read. Our homicidal heroes are driving to see Crystal's sister, And discover a book in their vehicle that neither one has put there. The book, they discover, is a compendium of carnage! but there is a little something odd about our little story book, as Crystal and Harry soon discover that they themselves are guest starring!

SO, no spoilers! I enjoyed this book, ( as I would enjoy any book set in the most awesome country in the world! ) its a very different take on the horror niche, I was warned that this book was scary, I didn't find it so but then I'm EXTREMELY desensitised, but I can see how people who weren't raised on David Wilson would be scared.

Its very well written, and I've heard the accompanying pictures are very disturbing, unfortunately viewing it on a kindle first gen I couldn't see them, maybe this was just a rendering issue.

so, Short point said long, This is a good story set in Wales, I recommend it!

One of the things I enjoy about horror is the tension, different because of the sense of dread.

This book has that kind of tension in spades. Dropping us into scene with a couple, Harry and Crystal, on a killing spree, the book immediately puts us into a world where everyone is in danger, including the killers. During their ride, they find a book with no author and start reading grisly stories, some of which feature them, and we understand that we've fallen into a place ruled by chaos, where anyone is vulnerable.

I loved how relentless this book was. The way the story drops into different vignettes reminds me of a gut-curdling version of The Canterbury Tales, or for horror film buffs, scary movies like "Creepshow" that are structured into shorter stories. The structure of the book weaves these shorter tales into the longer narrative as we follow the two lead characters, which keeps the pace tight, and never gives the reader a moment to wonder if they're safe. You're not safe in this book. And when bad stuff happens, it's going to be rough. But this makes it a better book.

You want to be scared? Well, this book was born to empty bowels. Pick a night when you're feeling brave and dig in.

This disturbing horror novel doesn't pull punches as you are introduced to Crystal and Harry, who are two very messed up diabolical characters who take you through the string of short horror stories that are actually a part of the bigger picture of the book as a whole. Set in South Wales, we follow Crystal and Harry as they flee in her van and subsequently find a book in her glove compartment, the book is called White Walls and Straitjackets. The plot turns more sinister as they discover they appear in the pages of the book.

I'm not a big fan of short stories, but the stories here are linked together by Crystal and Harry, which made this book a pleasure to read. I also found the major plot twist hair-raising and was swept away by the graphic and grotesque elements of the story. The newspaper articles and mental health notes at the end add to the chilling factor of the book.

A must-read for horror fans.

OMG!!!!! This book was FREAKING GREAT!!!! I absolutely love dark and twisted horror stories. I the bloodier and gorier the better. I am a true fan of Mr. Hughes. This is my first book by him and if his other books are like this one, I definitely be reading more. I am a huge fan of Bentley Little. He was dark and twisted and was not afraid to write about some pretty sick and twisted stuff, but he hasn't put out a book recently. I think that Mr. Hughes may have taken his place.

This book was written to make it seem like there were several short stories, but at the end they all tied together. Not for the squeamish or faint of heart. Wonderful!

A hell of a fast paced ride. It's reminiscent of Irvine Welsh's Acid House, however replace the acid with meth amphetamine sprinkled with touches of American Psycho. A collection of intertwined short stories of the extreme kind that pull the characters together into a more complete story. Clever twists and turns that keep you turning the pages. Would definitely read more from this author.

What a rousing collection of short stories that aren't as separate as they seem.

I'm not new to Mr. Hughes' jarring way of telling a story. His obvious lust for gore, sex, and his characters ever-spewing obscenities has surprisingly endeared me to his way of storytelling.

He's earned a lifelong fan in me and as long as his stories stay gory, bloody, and sexy as hell, I'll be there.

-Will expand upon this later, just had to write something about this awesome book.

Absolutely loved this horror! It's a little bit twisted and a lot gory and everything a horror should be. This author definitely has a gifted way of writing in this genre. I loved the way it seemed like a series of short stories but all tied in with a "larger picture" story over the top. Am looking forward to the sequel.

This book was his best yet! I read the whole thing in one sitting and loved the way all the stories came together. Pretty much just balls out nuts people doing crazy stuff. Whilst there is murder and gore the writer still sticks with his off the wall humour that anyone who loves his books knows is a constant in all his work.

This author's writing style may take a bit of warming up to, but after a page or two, you're hooked. It's in-your-face, dark, dirty, deranged--Exactly what you'd expect from true horror.

What appeared to be random stories within a story turned out to be a brilliantly woven plot. There's mystery and mayhem and glorious bloodshed at every turn, and you begin to question your own sanity by the end of it. In fact, I still don't know if Harry is real or not. And I like that.

I read this in one sitting, which is a first for me in the past few years. I have no choice but to read it again; I may have missed some "aha!" moments the first time around because I plowed through it so fast.

Many people know I base reviews around the physical structure of the story as well as the story itself. Though there appeared to be formatting or editing issues sprinkled throughout, it was refreshing to find a story so compelling as to silence my inner editor with a sharp, appreciated backhand.

I can't wait to read the sequel.

"What I would like to see is something from Mr Hughes without the “different”. Reading this book will not by any means put me off picking up something else of his in the future. I think a “straight” horror book from him would be entertaining and horrific because there is no doubt that he can certainly write."

So I have been slacking on the review side due to my ongoing projects. So I was super excited to get some downtime and read this bad boy. David won me over with the line "it's inspired by the album From The Inside by Alice Cooper ''. I practically screamed take my money now bitch. Yesterday I sat in the waiting room reading it, I didn't put it down till 10 o'clock at night. This was a mad twisted rollercoaster of awesome that had a mix of horror movie-inspired tropes and loads of music references. I love the style this book is written in, it's very Tales from the Crypt with the way you follow the journey of Harry and Crystal on their adventure. But also follow them as they read through a mysterious book that somehow knows more about them than they care to admit. Starting with an intro that makes you really feel sorry for Crystal having to deal with her abusive 'boyfriend'. But holy shit that changes as you go through the story with them. This dainty girl who seems to be the subject of constant abuse, turns out to be as messed up as Harry! Then we gotta talk about Shelby because that guy is mad as a bag of cats. This reminds me there is a part involving a cat which may make readers cringe. But to be fair I was cringing and making faces through the whole damn book. The set-up was bloody, brutal and brilliant so all the Bs, and David weave the world together beautifully. Bringing one story into another so you feel that you are trapped in this bizarre twilight zone world of mad people with a love for rock and metal. I love the Alice Cooper references dotted throughout the novel, especially a particular track from the Dragon Town album that I adore. The character Mr Tickles definitely is the image I had in my head when I listened to that song. Now the other stories really have a mix from extreme horror to bizarro to one story that pulls at the heart strings called The Quiet Room. He really mixes it up and those twists he throws in I did NOT expect. I mean there was not even an inclination when it came to Harry's secret. As for the other characters in the story, he left me wanting more. Shelby was a sadistic misogynist with a warped mind. I was singing man in the mask every time he popped into a story. Crystal and Harry had a Billy and Mille's vibe mixed with his song this maniacs in love with you. The layout was also unique. Near the end of the book, you get to read newspaper-style clippings and see patient files that were a cool touch. I went from horrified to shocked to laughing maniacally at some points. This book was a great source of entertainment and had some extreme elements that really added to the demented setting. I love someone who can build a whole world into one book, it's hard to do but David did a great job. I also was left with questions regarding a continuation, did Jessica get murdered? Will we get to learn more about the Hobbs? What happens to Crystal and Harry? Will her sister get out of Castell? It also gave me insight into the area as I didn't know a whole lot about Cardiff and other rural areas in that direction. But I would love to visit the places in the book, if the institute is actually there then get me a train ticket! But I doubt they will release me. Then David tells me there's a comic to go with this! I'm like Whhhhhatt!!! I need to see this! So yeah 10 Creepy Bunnies out of 10 for this psychology head screwy excellence.

David Owian Hughes is an up and coming new horror author who is building himself quite the awesome and uniquely diverse library thus far.
Wind-Up Toy, Walled In, and Granville I have read and loved so far and now this, White Walls and Straitjackets. To say I was impressed would be a vast understatement.
This is a series of shorts with a weavearound. Ooor is it??

Harry and Crystal are a couple of lousy theatre actors who consider themselves thespians of the highest caliber, they really reeeeallllllly loathe bad reviews. Do not give them bad reviews, in fact, just do not go to any of their shows ~ period.
They are deadly psychopaths. Harry is very demeaning and blunt towards Crystal but she takes it all in stride, she's a bit lovesick and most likely somewhat leary and timid of him...ooor is she??
Hopping in a van, after taking care of some psychopathic business, they set out on a road trip to go see her poor nuthoused sister. They come across a book called White Walls and Straitjackets - author unknown - hidden in the glove box and therein lies some of the most heinous and creepy stories that all seem to hit a little too close to home.

T.M.M. ~ Shelby is a serial killer who likes to lurk about and hide out in unsuspecting ladies closets, sniffing their knickers. He may have met his match with his latest "unsuspecting" gal though.

The Quiet Room ~ A man confined to the Castell Hirwaun loony bin for massacring his family, he is said to have amnesia, not even knowing his own name other than the Mr. Stevenson the staff call him....he is forever stuck in the memory of what truly happened that bloody and horrific day.

Mr. Tickles ~ A shout out to the inanimate clown friend of Simone from Hughes amazing Wind-Up Toy novel. In this, he is quite real, 40ish and grossly appalling. Along with his pet raven, he's getting ready to preform his heinous circus act with his bound whore in tow.

Santa Klaws ~ Santa got a evil brother hell bent on offing him every Christmas. Kiddies don't want a visit from this particular St. Prick, he relishes and actively seeks out collateral damage.

Lips ~ A little backstory of our main characters; meet Cynthia, David, and Walter, the 3 reviewers who sealed their fate when they dared to bash Harry and Crystal's show stopping performance. Crystal may not be as meek and mild as she lets on and gleefully channels her hurt ego into a pure vicious rampage worthy of Oscar gold.
Who knew being a critic was such a dead end job.

Canvas ~ 23 year old Sid decides it's finally time to get himself a tattoo. After much research he picks the perfect parlor. Settling on a boa tat, he proceeds to the procedure. Well, turns out he not only picked the wrong tattoo but the wrong artist as well. These tattoos have spiritual and symbolic meanings that can make or break you.
Coincidentally, Crystal also got a more 'enlightened' choice of a tattoo at that same parlor and also meet her love Harry there.

Stitch ~ Norm still loves his wife but since her accident he's had to look outside his marriage for certain gratifications, accommodations, and modifications.

Hob's ~ Jessica works in a shithole diner that doubles as a bar. She has an ass for a boss who has a slag of a wife. Poor Jessica, she was late to work due to car troubles and has now secured a ride back home from a kindly gent named Shelby. He seems nice enough. Damn her father for being late.

The Works ~ Jessica's father finally gets to Hob's looking for her as the sleazy proprietors are running their lucrative side job. Think glory hole solicitations for cost effective menu items.
*Also, our Crystal finally meets up with her lil sister, it's been years. Samantha is bound to the medical bed at her long term and permanent residence home away from home, Castell Harium, and is none too happy to see her big sis.
They have issues.

02:00 am ~ Steve enjoys going for super early morning runs, camera in tow and under the cover of night, he seeks and creeps into sealed off crime scenes, which there are plenty of in his neck of the woods. After accidentally witnessing a disposal of sorts...well, bye Steve, you seemed like a nice enough, albeit creepy as hell, dude.

Brilliant little epilogue chronicling some of the inmates at the Castell Hirwaun loony bin. Just a bit more insight and clarity to it all.
Ya know, South Wales is an absolutely beautiful and stunning place, however I think I'll completely scratch it off my 'places I'd like to visit' list.
A lot of nutters, wankers, and psychos run amuck there.
Apparently including Mr. Hughes himself, an inmate as well due to his.....wait for it ~ sex addiction and overt infatuation with stocking-ed up legs. Of course, this part is puuuure auto biography.
Running gag through all his books, David's got a real hard-on leg fetish.

This is actually a pretty complex little tale of tales, it switches up past and present and has unusual little intertwining elements in it. One must really pay attention, it's worth it and all adds up in the end.
It may seem to come across as a tad bit disjointed at times but fear not...there are always rotten rhymes and retched reasons to his methods of morbid madness.

Also included at the end, are perfectly little creepy comic pics illustrating all the tales in gory and explicit detail.
I have a signed copy of this book heading my way, I hear it also has the pictures.
YAY, I love picture books, makes me feel like the unbalanced little kid from yesteryears long past.

I have summed this up to the best of my ability, there are far faaaar many more treats, surprises and WTF moments a plenty.
It might hurt your brain a tad, take a Motrin or pop a handful of Valium with a rum chaser.
Worked for me!!

Thankfully and self perseverancely, it is highly unlikely Mr. Hughes will ever get a bad review from me. I value my little existence far too much and am in such awe of his unique genius and unrivaled flare to ever even see a need to go there.
Seriously, if any fans of extreme horror have not checked this author out, you should!! He will quickly rise towards the top of your new favorites authors list!!

What a Horrific, Yet, Entertaining Read!

David Owain Hughes is a new to me author and most definitely has my attention, this won't be my last read either.

I knew this was an Extreme Horror story, but, I did not expect to be as entertained by unexpected twists and such gruesome turns! This book kept me at the edge of my seat from page one. The author definitely has the knack for strategically placing plot pivots at just the right time. Bravo!!

The characters Harry and Crystal are well developed, likable, unlikable, and believable. The banter back and forth had me rolling at times, then it would upset my apple cart, so to speak. I never knew what Mr. Hughes was gonna picturesquely portray, so it definitely kept me intrigued.

If you like Extreme Horror this is a story for you!

What a darkly humorous ride. What i really like about this anthology is it feels like the old film ones where all the stories are within one whole thing. Twilight Zone the movie with Dan Aykroyd in the car telling tales.
This is about two unusual (but not in horror terms) serial killers, Crystal and Harry going on a revenge spree after their act is critiqued in a bad way. Along the way they find a mysterious book with no author in the glove compartment of their van, within the book is stories depicting gruesome and horrible things.
If you're a fan of gruesome horror with a bit of cheek this is for you...

This was my first book by David and what a gore-fest it was!! Reminiscent of classic 70's / 80's horror.
The main characters, Harry and Crystal are a twisted couple on a journey filled with murder and mayhem. I took an immediate dislike to both of them for very different reasons; each part of an extremely toxic relationship, but nonetheless this, in part compelled me to read on.
The short stories being read by Harry to Crystal as she drives, from a book found in their glove compartment are dark, gruesome and twisted, however it's actually the main characters parts of this tale which disturbed me the most. Loved the hospital notes at the end.
An original, well thought-out read
