A Collection of Architectural and Historical details of 30 landmarks in New York City with black and white photographs of each plus text describing details of owners, architects, and architectural features.
Excellent summary of the many great and beautiful landmarks in NYC for both resident and traveller alike. Includes a stunning collection of B & W photos.
• Brooklyn bridge: The world's first steel-wire suspension bridge. One week after opening 12 pedestrians were trampled to death when the crowd panicked thinking the bridge was collapsing.
• Ellis island: Only 2% of the immigrants were sent back (usually for tuberculosis or other health reasons).
• The Flatiron Building: Built in 1902 it marked the beginning of the skyscraper era in NYC. Last year we came up from a subway station and wondered why everyone was taking pictures. We turned around to the jaw dropping view is this building. In New York City you must always look up.
• Times Square: Dropping the New Years ball since 1904
• The Plaza Hotel: Home of Eloise!
• Grand Central Station: "I hated that place as a kid. We went away to camp from there. Going away you couldn't find your counselors. Coming home you couldn't find your parents." From Helene Hanff's Apple of My Eye. Yes, it's ginormous!
• Empire State Building: Tallest skyscraper in the world from 1931-1973. Cost $41 million, $19 million UNDER budget. The monumental spire is hit by lightening ~500 times/year.
"Sleepless city on the Hudson of eight million strong, Where fortunes are made and monuments are built. An island of skyscrapers reaching for the starts. A window cleaner's dream - or nightmare. The apple in Eve's eye, New York." - C.J.Z.
