About the author

Dr. Ian Shaw (born 1961) is an Egyptologist and Reader in Egyptian archaeology at the University of Liverpool.

His field work was largely focused in el-Amarna, but in recent times, he has done extensive excavations of mining and quarrying sites from many different Ancient Egyptian periods. He primarily focuses his recent work on methods and mechanics of Egyptian craftsmen and laborers. However, he has produced several works regarding ancient Egyptian warfare; a topic that had long been ignored or only briefly commented on by other researchers.

Besides writing original books, he also has edited several "dictionaries" of Ancient Egypt (which might more correctly be labeled "encyclopedias"; they are in no way lexicons).

The only thing I wish it had was more detail about the gods and goddesses but this is an excellent first ancient Egyptian dictionary that I got at the age of 11 when we visited the British Museum and I cried at artwork for the very first time in my life and it wasn't even the Rosetta Stone, it was the statue of the Geoffrey's Cat.

Ancient Egypt is quite possibly the most popular historical time-line to date. This book has some of the most up to date research at time of puplication, with one or to updates requiering some amending.

Highly recommended.

Ancient Egypt is studied in AP World History and also in African History. This book would work with any student enrolled in one of those classes.

A very useful reference book and a stand alone book in its own right, easy to find specific subjects/objects/people and easy to read, not overly complex given the subject matter
