I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.

Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!

I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

4 - "This is what we do." Stars!

Kill Without Mercy is the first book in Alexandra Ivy's new ARES Security Series. I have previously only read novella length books by this author, and have to say that after first impressions I had high expectations for this book.

"It's not easy to live with a secret."

So let me introduce you to the ARES guys, all ex-military, all battling their own demons and with their own specific skill sets that make them all an integral part of the team. Rafe, Max, Teagan, Hauk and Lucas. We pretty much meet all of them in this book, but the story focusses on Rafe Vargas, and the shit storm he finds himself in the middle of, when he returns to his Grandfathers house to clear it out after his death.

"Never challenge a soldier, sweetheart."

Its been fifteen years since the capture and suicide of the Newton Slayer, who during his time prior to being caught managed to kidnap and brutally murder seven women. But for Annie White, he was just her father, a man that left her milk and cookies out when she returned from school, and read bedtime stories at night... As you would expect, all is not as it seems with Annie's memories, or her return to Newton, especially when women start going missing again.

"You're safe in my arms."

I really enjoyed this story, Rafe's easy going cheekiness, in the face of Annie's almost innocence and vulnerability built really well into a sexy relationship against the back drop of a superbly crafted suspense/thriller. The author threw a lot of things into the plot, but at no point did the story feel crowded of overdone, and I found myself ploughing through the story with complete enjoyment.

I only discovered this Alexandra Ivy in 2015, and I know for sure that I will be early looking to read more from her in 2016 on the strength of the books I have read so far.

****Full Review****

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Annie is starting to have visions again, considering these visions have to do with women being murder and her father was the "Newton Slayer", she has reason to be concerned. Going against her foster mother's wishes, she travels back to Newton, the town where her childhood was shattered. Rafe has been putting it off but he eventually decides now is the time to pack up his deceased grandfather's house and get the place sold. While in the small town diner he rescues a pretty woman from a town gossip and ultimately finds himself in the middle of a serial killer mystery. A buried past, lies, and corruption besiege Annie and Rafe as they search for the truth of what happened years ago and fight to stay one step in front of the current danger and their feelings for one another.

The first in a new series, Kill Without Mercy, introduces us to Rafe and his four friends. They were all in the military, captured in Afghanistan, and tortured before their eventually escape. All discharged, they now live in the states and are starting up a new security business called ARES. A prologue gives us all the men's names and what their specialties in the military were, while throughout the story we get more snippets of the men through conversations and interactions with Rafe as they all work together to help Rafe find the serial killer. It's easy to think about why they would have a close bond but I missed having at least one scene of their time in Afghanistan to get a better feel for them as a group. There were a couple times where one or two of the friends were focused on a bit much for what is supposed to be Rafe's story and ended up feeling like series baiting but that is typically a problem in firsts in a series.

Annie was one of the more level headed heroines usually found in romantic suspense books. She took Rafe's advice and listened to his expertise but still exhibited strength of character. However, with the murder mystery and introduction of the AREs' men, she became a wallflower in her own story at times. The story arc of her visions also ended up feeling somewhat tagged on as the explanation for them felt puzzling and disjointed. Rafe was a non-arrogant alpha; he was bossy but not misogynistic in his attitude towards Annie. There were times though, that I could feel myself side-eyeing how obliviously controlling he could be. He never sees any other outcome than Annie doing what he wants. For example, he tells his friends she is moving to Texas with him to live on his ranch (they have known each other for about two weeks) without ever even discussing it with her, to him it is a foregone conclusion because that is what he wants. It was little things like this that made me slightly uncomfortable with him and gave me problems with the romance aspect of the story.

I wouldn't say Annie and Rafe's relationship was insta-love or lust but insta-connection; they are just immediately together. With Rafe's surety that Annie would go along with all his plans for them, it eliminated some of the excitement of the two coming together. I know in the romance genre this is a foregone conclusion but the spark of the journey ended up missing here. I found Annie to disappear the most when it came to their relationship part of the story. While I found the romance to be weaker, the murder mystery was the strongest part of the story for me. It was interesting with the author showing you first where the details of the serial murders had landed and then going back and showing you how/why they landed that way, thus connecting the dots and telling the true story. Secondary characters played a big part in this aspect and for the most part, were flushed out enough to create a believable story.

The romance part of this story was simplistic but if you're looking for more of a mystery than suspense, this was a good “figure it out and connect the dots” read. It was well written and overall well paced; keeping the reader wondering just what went on in this small town all those years ago. The hero was a bit pushy but with four other heroes waiting in the wings, one is bound to be a favorite if looking for a new series to try.

Kill Without Mercy by Alexandra Ivy is the first book in a new Romantic Suspense series that has definitely made it on to my must read list! I have read Alexandra Ivy’s paranormal romance books and enjoyed them, but this book is that step above that I am always looking for. The series follows five soldiers, who become a band of brothers that survive and escape a Taliban hellhole. They come home and form their own high tech security company, ARES Security.

Rafe Vargas, a covert ops specialist, is in Newton, Iowa to clear out his grandfather’s house. He just wants to get it done and return to his ranch and the life he is building in Houston with ARES Security. He runs into Annie White at the diner and is instantly drawn to her. Annie White lived in Newton years ago with her father, who was dubbed the Newton Slayer. She is back because she is having visions that the killings have begun again, but how can that be? Rafe knows she is in danger and vows to protect her and catch the serial killer.

This story keeps you reading because the characters are interesting and you want to find out everything about them. The romance is hot and believable with a sexy alpha male and a beautiful, strong yet troubled heroine. The plot keeps moving at a fast pace and there are several plot twists with a big twist at the end. I highly recommend this book. I can’t wait to see who the next book features because this one was so good.

Thank you so much to Kensington Books, Zebra and Net Galley for allowing me to read this ebook in exchange for an honest review. It was my pleasure and delight!

What a fantastic start to a most promising RS series!

Rafe Vargas, together with his four soldier buddies recently started their own security firm, ARES. They have an unbreakable bond, forged by their determination to survive and escape the torture they endured after being captured in Southern Afganistan.

Now Rafe is in Newton to clear out his grandfather’s house, so that he can sell it. He’s determined to get the unpleasant task done a.s.a.p., but then he meets the beautiful and troubled Annie, and everything changes.

Annie White is the daughter of the Newton Slayer, a serial killer who murdered 7 women 15 years ago. She has trouble connecting with people and trusting her own instincts, because how could she not have seen that her loving father was capable of being a killer. She has returned to the town where it all happened because she believes that someone is killing again. And this time she is determined to save the women being hunted before they are killed.

I must say the suspense was absolutely fantastic. The author did a brilliant job in writing a plot that was gripping and captivating. There was a surprising twist to who the mysterious new serial killer was, and why Annie was the main focus of the killer. And even though I had my suspicions about the identity of the killer, I was very surprised about the why.

“Oh Annie, my desire for you has nothing to do with causes,” he husked, his eyes blazing with a hunger that made her body clench with need. “And everything to do with a man so fascinated with a woman he can barely think straight.”

I absolutely loved Rafe! I loved that for a change the hero wasn’t into casual hook-ups, he didn’t have any commitment issues, and that he was instantly attracted to Annie. He knew right away that he wasn’t letting her go and did everything he could to protect her and to convince her to give him a chance.

Annie was the more broken one in this book, and who can blame her with her past. Even though she had many issues, she wasn’t weak. I really liked her, and the fact that she didn’t allow her past to stop her from doing what was right.

The romance was very sexy and hot, and balanced perfectly with the suspense.

I just loved Rafe and his 4 sexy partners, and was hooked instantly from the first mention of them. I just loved the banter between all of them, and how loyal they are to each other. Ms. Ivy revealed just enough about the other sexy men of ARES to make me salivate over them, and wanting their books NOW.

I was so very impressed with how great the first book in this series was. It met all of my romantic suspense criteria: hot and sexy romance with gripping suspense. I cannot wait for the next book!

A must read for all who loves romantic suspense. You won’t be disappointed.

HAPPY RELEASE DAY!

5 "Edge of your seat suspense-mystery-thriller-romance stars"!

It's been a a while since I've read Alexandra Ivy, and I forgot how much I enjoyed her writing and voice.

Kill Without Mercy (ARES Security, #1) by Alexandra Ivy is the first book in a new contemporary-romance-thriller series.

The main characters were just how I like them.
Broken, smart, independent, witty, and bad-ass.
Needless to say, I loved Rafe and Annie's characters!

Annie is the the surviving child of a serial killer. She has been brought up in a foster home by a loving family who only want to protect her from her past.
When Annie starts having dreams of women being killed, she fears that it has started again.
Annie goes against her parents advice and returns to the town where it all started Newton, Iowa to discover that women have gone missing who have the exact profile as the women her father had killed.
Annie wants to find out what's going on, and how she's connected through the visions.

Rafe is retired special forces-now security specialist.
Rafe and his friends have formed ARES, a security firm in Texas.
Rafe has returned to Newton, Iowa to clean out his grandfather's house because it finally has a buyer after a year of being vacant.

Rafe first meets a skiddish Annie at a diner, and soon discovers that this girl is in desperate need of help.
All of a sudden Rafe's protective instincts kick in and he and his team set out to discover what's going on in this small farm town.

This story is engaging, filled with action, mystery, and suspense... and of course a simmering romance.

I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading the rest of the ARES team's story.

I recently had the pleasure of reading a short story by this author in All He Wants For Christmas which introduced the guys of Ares security so when I spotted this book I just couldn't resist it. Ok I will admit there are several series out there that feature military types running their own security business but the addition of a heroine who is the daughter of a serial killer took my breath away. That's sufficiently different to catch my attention but when you add in the fact that Annie is connected through dreams to the multiple deaths then this book is completely and wholly unique!
If you are already a fan of this authors paranormal books then you will be very keen to read this story that ties up action, suspense and of course romance. A very strong alpha male type hero in Rafe who never for one minute doubts himself or those he loves. Yes I said loves because there is no doubt in my mind that these seemingly different war veterans are a tightly woven group who would go to the wall to support each other. When he meets Annie not only is he attracted to her but she brings out all his protective urges. It's a small town full of prejudice but Rafe quickly discovers that Annie is in danger!
Annie is haunted by the events that took place when she was just a child but lately the dreams are back with a vengeance. Going back to Newton is hard but maybe she could finally get some closure? Well that's unlikely as when Annie arrives it's to discover there's a copycat killer on the loose and someone is sending Annie strange notes that clearly mark her as a target. Who can Annie trust? The sheriff who rescued her all those years ago or sexy Rafe who just won't take no for an answer?
I absolutely loved this! The author has done a fabulous job of mixing action with passion and an intriguing mystery for readers to solve. Wonderful supporting characters who we still have lots more to learn about. The guys who form Ares have secrets and it will be a joy discovering more about them. For now though it's all about Rafe and Annie. He is without doubt a charmer and he sees in Annie a future but first he has to not only save her but also convince her she belongs with him! Poor Annie just cannot believe she has a future with anyone really and her self defence and need for preservation sees her putting up all kinds to of walls but luckily Rafe isn't the sort to run from a fight. Annie may start out in a dark place but with Rafe and his friends ( who are like a family really) there's definitely light at the end of the tunnel.
Bottom line is I loved the twists and turns as the mystery unfolded and whole heartedly recommend this book

Kill without mercy is a good book with the right amount of suspense and romance. After reading a particularly emotionally draining book I was glad to read this book as it was light, fun to read and had a really good plot.

Rafe Varga covert ops specialist, Max Grayson trained forensics, Hauk Laurensen a sniper weapons expert and Teegan Moore a computer wizard

It should have broken them. Even the most hardened soldiers could shatter beneath the acute psychological and physical punishment. Instead the torment only honed their ruthless determination to escape their captors.

And so ARES Security was born.

Rafe Vargas is on his way to Newton, Iowa to clear out his estranged Grandfathers house. He doesn’t want to but he knows he has to.

Annie White is the daughter of the Newton serial killer. Her visions of women being taken have picked up again after 15 years so she travels from Denver back to Newton to see if her fears have come true. Unfortunately they have.

Now there are loads of former military opening their own security firm but I really enjoyed this one. Rafe had so many opportunities to hook up with other women but he solely focused on Annie. They were really good together.

There were good twists and turns that were unexpected.

I can’t wait for the rest of the series to come out. 3 solid stars.

The writing is good and the plot had loads of potential, but in the end, I didn't really enjoy the book that much. I was constantly pulled out the novel frustrated by my reactions to the story.

For the most part the suspense plot got put on the back burner so that we can have way to many he's so hot/she's so hot moments. The H/h barely know each other a day and she's moved into the guestroom in his grandfather's house. She's tingling all the time because he's so good looking. One minute he thinks she's too fragile for him to make a pass at and then he's taking her to dinner so that he can feel good about seducing her.

I really need more suspense and less cliche romance. It's really not even romance it's just insta-lust.

A few examples of some of my issues:

Page 106: Annie thinks "…if she was a normal woman she would tell him to park the truck so she could get him naked ASAP." So a normal woman goes around having sex with men they don't know just because they are good looking? I really think most of us are normal, but we aren't jumping good looking men left and right that we don't know. I really think that a normal woman would want to get to know a man first.

Page 135: Rafe thinks "...indulge her with dinner before taking her back to the hotel..." Now there's a cave man for you. So nice that he wanted to indulge her by feeding her. Just pages (2 days) earlier he thought she was too fragile to pull the moves on her. And then he goes straight to wanting sex and to take her back to his ranch. HE DOESN"T KNOW HER OR SHE HIM? Am I supposed to believe this? It's impossible to suspend disbelief and buy into their "relationship".

Page 285 Teagon Snorted. "Rafe is going to keep her, so she belongs to us." What??? Is this the middle ages???

There was also a lot of excessive man posturing by Rafe and the other team members and some really less than stellar dialogue - standard romance cliches which just leave you wanting something more believable.

It seemed like the whole plot happened off page as one or another of his team make a discovery usually by spending hours on the computer. And while they are on the computer, Rafe is trying to get into Annie's pants. The plot was barely noticeable as you had scene after scene with Rafe trying to convince Annie to move to his ranch.

Sometimes I start to believe that I don't like romantic suspense, but I do. My all time favorite books are romantic suspense (que Karen Rose and Laura Griffin). What I need are real suspense plots that happen on the page. What I need are real emotions from the characters. And I just didn't find that here. There were so many times I just wanted to stop and read something else, but oh yeah I'm trying to make it to book 2. And if it's more of the same I'm going to die.

On the positive side, the author knows her basic writing craft. Things like story arc, grammar and sentence structure are good. I gave 2 stars for these. I seem harsh, but I keep hoping that some of these good writers will drop the cliches, stretch their talent and create that book that you can't put down. I think Ms. Ivy has that talent.

As a fan of Alexandra Ivy’s paranormal books, I was excited that she is starting a new series with a slight paranormal flare.

Annie had a terrifying physic ability, as a child she saw murders as they were happening. Her father was arrested for these murders and killed in prison before he ever went to trial.

Years later, Annie is an adult and the dreams have returned. She is again plagued with the dreams of murders. Annie decides to return to her hometown. She needs to find out if these are just dreams that haunt her from her past or if a murderer again is claiming the lives of the women in her hometown.

Rafe’s estranged grandfather has died, leaving Rafe the beneficiary of a rundown home in a small town. Last thing he expects while facing this difficult chore is finding a woman that ignites his every protective instinct and desires.

When one in the Ares team gets invoiced the entire team has their back.

I absolutely loved this book. The mystery thriller with the physic connection was awesome but the over all story telling style sealed the deal for me.

Flat out, Kill Without Mercy was an extraordinary new read and series by one of my go to authors, Alexandra Ivy.

Kill Without Mercy by Alexandra Ivy is a 2015 Kensington publication. I as provided a copy of this book by the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Count me in. This is my kind of romantic suspense. Terrifying, pulse pounding suspense, with red hot romance and a hero that will have you eating out of the palm of his hand.

Alexandra Ivy is mostly known for her kick butt urban fantasy series. So, I was more than a little curious when I saw she was beginning a new romantic suspense series.

Many of you know that romantic suspense is my favorite genre, but these days I'm finding fewer and fewer series to sink my teeth into and have begun to rely on discovering older titles with more traditional outlines.

So, I have to say I am doing the happy dance over this one. The author has combined the tough ex-military team with the more traditional romantic suspense themes I enjoy most, making this book a must read for romantic suspense fans of all flavors.

Annie returns to her hometown in Newton, Iowa, after the disturbing visions that have plagued her since childhood begin to increase, leading her to believe she must finally face her worst nightmares.

Annie was the lone survivor of the “Newton Slayer” a serial killer who also happened to be her father. But something about the case is nagging at her, so for her own peace of mind, she needs to make an attempt at finding closure.

Rafe has left Texas and his newly formed security firm to put his grandfather's affairs in order, a task he finds particularly distasteful. But, his chance meeting with Annie sends his protective sensors into overdrive and before long the couple are working together, seeking answers to the old case involving Annie's father and a new crop of missing or murdered women.

Are these killings related to the 'Newton Slayer'? Is it a copycat killer?

Either way, two things have become crystal clear: One- Annie is being watched and could be in danger and Two: Rafe has fallen head over heels for her.

This is a dark story with a super creepy serial killer, some morally bankrupt characters, lots of volatile secrets, and an action packed race against time that had me holding on for dear life.

There were a few times when the story lagged, just a little, mainly due to the necessity of introducing the main characters, which sets us up for future installments. However, any down time was short lived, and the pace stayed balanced, building the suspense little by little, and ending with a spectacular showdown.

Ladies, if you don't find Rafe hotter than fire and if he doesn't have your temperature rising, then you better check your pulse! Whew! This guy has 'book boyfriend' written all over him. He definitely comes down on the Alpha side of the fence, but, he's also super sweet, very loyal, and will put his life on the line for the woman he loves.

Annie, was not one of those women that comes with a sarcastic tongue, a tough as nails attitude, or the ability to hold her own against a guy ten times her size. Her terrifying visions aside, she's an everyday, normal person, with a plain vanilla life, until she gathers the courage to face her past. She's vulnerable and a little fragile, but she rises to the occasion, unlocking a fierce fortitude, and does what she has to survive and bring down a twisted, sick serial killer.

Rafe and Annie make a great team, and a great couple.

I really enjoyed this first book in the Ares Security series and so I am SO stoked for the next installment!

Kill Without Mercy is the first book in Alexandra Ivy's ARES Security series. In this series we are introduced the men of ARES Security. These five men have been through hell and back together. And the glue that brought them back together after surviving and escaping is Rafe Vargas.

The last thing Rafe wants to be doing is cleaning out his grandfather's house in Newton, Iowa when he has a new life and business down in Texas. Rafe didn't have a relationship with his grandfather, but he knows his father would want him to clean out the house. He has only been in Newton for a few days when he first sees Annie at a local diner. He is instantly drawn to her and wants to learn more about the woman that has captured his attention so completely.

Annie White is a child of a serial killer. Fifteen years ago, her father was the Newton Slayer, the local serial killer that killed 7 woman. Now at 25, Annie has made a life for herself in Denver and has moved past the stigma of being a killer's daughter... or so she thought. Annie is seeing visions of death again. So she desides to head back to Newton to see if her visions are becoming reality...

...And they are.

Rafe has ALWAYS been one to trust his instincts, and his instincts are telling two things: that Annie could be in trouble, and that he will do anything to protect her and make her a permanent part of his life.

I really enjoyed everything about this book. I loved the men of ARES. Their relationships and banter showed how much of a unit they are. I loved Rafe and Annie as a couple and individuals. They made each other better people but still allowed each other to be individuals and make their own decisions. I am really looking forward to future books from this series.

ARC Review

Kill Without Mercy is book one in the ARES Security series.

Rafe Vargas is a member of the recently formed ARES Security. Rafe heads to the home of his recently passed grandfather to clean out the house when he meets Annie White. Annie has a notorious history in this town and she is brought back by the frightening dreams that are plaguing her sleep. Her dreams are premonitions and she is fearful that these will come true. Unfortunately, there is a serial killer in town and she is the key to finding and stopping murderer.

This book reads more like a mystery thriller than any other that I have read by this author. I’m a fan of Alexandra Ivy’s paranormal pieces so I knew it was going to be a good story, but I didn’t expect it to be the taut thriller it turned out to be. The paranormal elements are minimal and that still works f because there is strong suspense. I welcome the killer’s perspective as it adds a creep factor that enhanced the story.

The central characters intrigue me, especially Annie. Being the daughter of a suspected (and convicted in the court of public opinion) serial killer, her experiences as a child are horrifying. I can only imagine what it must have been like for her and how heavy the burden of that stigma must be. I also liked Rafe, although he is just this side of bossy for my tastes, I appreciate his earnestness in trying to help Annie solve the mystery of her dreams. He has a need to be the hero. However, I question the chemistry of the two of them as a couple. He acknowledges that she needs protection and help, but is that enough to start a long – term relationship? It seems rather one-sided.

Because it is the first book in the series, we are introduced to team which will be the focus of the books. ARES consists of Rafe, the covert ops specialist; Max Grayson, the resident scientist and nerd; Hauk Laurensen, sniper and weapons specialist; Teagan Moore, the computer wizard and other nerd; and Lucas St. Clair, hostage negotiator. As a team, Ms. Ivy has introduced some interesting personalities. They are a brotherhood forged through their experience in war. It is repeated often they are each other’s family. I’m a fan of stories featuring “teams” and I am excited about forthcoming books.

IN A NUTSHELL
A intriguing thriller, this is a great start to a new series.

I've never read an Alexandra Ivy book that I didn't love and Kill Without Mercy was no exception. I knew the woman could write, there's no doubt about that, and while I love her PNR, I'm so glad she decided to venture into romantic suspense... Seriously, she killed it! And I cannot wait for the rest of the books in this series!

After leaving the military, Rafe and his buddies stayed in touch and have been working on setting up their own security business. Unfortunately Rafe has to take a time out to travel to Newton to clear out his late grandfather's house so that he can sell it. It's in Newton that Rafe meets Annie and his priorities shift.

Annie is haunted by her past and when she starts getting visions that she long thought buried, she knows that she has to travel back to her hometown. Women are missing, just like in Annie's visions from fifteen years ago, except the Newton Slayer, aka Annie's father, has been dead since he was arrested and killed fifteen years prior. Annie always thought her father was innocent and now she needs to find these women and prove whether the new killer is a copycat or if they got the wrong guy in the first place.

I love the immediate connection between Annie and Rafe! Even though Annie's not in a place to be starting a relationship she can't help but feel safe around Rafe. And Rafe... Sigh! He feels protective of Annie from the get-go and is determined to help keep her safe. I love that although he wanted to protect her, he also knew that he couldn't stop Annie from trying to find the missing women, he just stuck with her every step of the way.

There's a whole lot of suspense in this one that kept me on the edge of my seat... And some twists and turns that I did not see coming! Just when I thought things were going to go one way, Ms. Ivy up and changed the game on me and I couldn't believe some of the things I was reading!

While I absolutely loved this book I was really hoping for a little more at the end. Yes, Rafe and Annie got their HEA but I was really looking forward to some heartfelt confessions of love once the suspense was over. Overall though, I really can't complain over how everything worked out and I can't wait to see whose book is next!

Overall I really liked the story. Rafe was a passionate and compassionate hero. Annie was a sweet, shy yet strongwilled heroine. If I could give half stars this would be a 3.5. The only thing that kept me from giving a solid 4 stars was the repetitive use of words. "Demanded" was pretty much on every page. The story would profit from a little editing in this regard.

I will definitely read the next installment of this series. I love the brotherhood of these five men and the way they treat a woman.

So, I knew who the killer was before the character was even mentioned or introduced. There are just too many stories with this plot to not recognize it immediately. That was a bit of a bummer, as the mystery was ruined pretty quickly. But the suspense was still there, and of course... the romance. :) Not to say there was no mystery, there are at least three mysteries in this book that need solving. But one of them was blatantly obvious.

Rafe was a character I have zero complaints about. Typical alpha male, but really smart and in possession of a great personality. I only wish we had a bit more character development for him. But that seemed to be Annie's thing - she began as a determined, but frightful little thing and I found her insanely naive at times. I liked her, though. And I liked how she became stronger and more confident as things progressed. She still made missteps, but she recognized them immediately and tried to fix them. I also totally understood why she was unsure if Rafe would still be interested in her once she was no longer a damsel in distress. Their relationship was entirely free of the usual "I'm leaving you to save you" bullshit you usually find in romantic suspense stories.

One thing that drove me crazy - absolutely insane, really - was this one line in the book. "Squashed it in the bud"... that is not a phrase. "Nipped it in the bud" is the correct phrase. And I even Googled it to make sure there wasn't some weird version of the phrase that used "squashed" instead of "nipped". Nope. That's not a phrase. And I constantly thought back on it throughout the rest of the book. It bothered me so much, I couldn't stop thinking about it. Now, if you read this book, you won't stop thinking about it, either.

Soooo overall... I did enjoy the story very much. It wasn't entirely predictable, but the execution could have been a teensy bit better. The other men of ARES - Lucas, Hauk, Teagan, and Max - will undoubtedly have their own steamy stories with lots of drama and mystery. And I will absolutely read them. Especially Lucas' story - he had very little page time in this book, I don't think he actually showed up on page anywhere. But I am intrigued to the extreme. And oh look, his is the next book. Guess I'm gonna go buy that right now.

Definitely recommended.

3.5!

Good start to a new series, five ex-military friends have banded together to start their own security agency.

Rafe is in town to clear out his Grandfather's house, which he is selling. While he is there he meets Annie, instincts tell him that she is in trouble and he is determined to help her. Together, and with the help of Rafe's friends, they unravel the truth of what had happened fifteen years ago.

I did like the story, the mystery was good, though the ending felt a little rushed. I enjoyed meeting Rafe's friends who we get to know a little in this book, though Lucas is still a bit of a mystery. I am guessing Hauk's story is next as there were little hints dropped in this book and I am definitely interested in reading about that.

This wasn't a bad read by any means; it was actually well written. Unfortunately, there was absolutely nothing new here, nothing I hadn't read a dozen times before. The RS serial killer trope and the little heroine is in the killers sights. For a while there, I thought I was reading a remarkabley similar book written by Cynthia Eden. The last part of the book verged on the truly ridiculous; though there was an interesting twist at the end.

Bottom line; it was enjoyable enough if nothing that stood out in a sea of similar books. The lack of originality was a killer for me. I did like the setup for the other guys on the team, so who knows...

I pondered long and hard how to put my thoughts about this story into words. I've never read Alexandra Ivy's works before and the blurb was the one attracted me to read this book. As such, I must have had an expectation of what I'd find within the pages; one that soon dashed. It's not that the whole book was a let down. Individually, the aspects work fine and I quite like Ms. Ivy's writing; as an ensemble though... it's not a smooth sailing for me.

Kill Without Mercy is the start of a new series "ARES Security" which centered on five ex military men who'd been through hell in Taliban's prison. Though personally I didn't feel this book tell much about that background. That's too bad, really. It would've given more impression on what formed the men's fierce loyalty and protectiveness toward each other.

The mystery, or the real killer, could pretty much be predicted early in the book. In the sense that the true crime(s) were covered by people with "power". How they were divulged, the steps the MC did, was rather frustrating for me.

Not that I disliked the hero, but I wasn't entirely pleased with him either. Granted, Rafe Vargas's specialty was covert ops, not murder investigation, but it grated me that he didn't feel the urgency to find the villain until . For all the "damsel in distress" aura Annie White oozed throughout the book, she also showed level-headedness and will of steel that I liked.

Added to that Rafe too possessive and instant attraction to Annie. Based on... her face or body? I mean, for someone with his background, to basically throw cautious to the wind and go Neanderthal, with a loose serial killer around?? This didn't add up to the character at all. Heck, even Annie was more sensible most of the time.

Distracting her from troubles with food and sex were fine, so long as at the same time he's also done something to speed up solving the problem. But honestly, I thought Rafe's approach was too casual in handling the case.

Annie also had "gift" in visions that connected to the murderer. However, this didn't have enough weight in the story; again such a letdown for me. Later on, it's even revealed that . So, basically she didn't really have that power. -more disappointment-

The redeeming part came in the form of Rafe's four partners who swooped down and help the situations. Their actions and concerns in dealing with the whole problems, even the off page ones, were more up to snuff. For me these guys alone would be enough reasons to continue the series. I dearly hope the others's stories will be more gripping than this pilot.

Kill Without Mercy is the first of a new series by Alexandra Ivy. It centers around a start-up security company called ARES Security. The partners are five former special ops guys who shared a horrid ordeal – being held in a Taliban prison. They forged an unbreakable bond that continued after they escaped and left the military.

I’m not sure why I don’t read more romantic suspense since it’s a genre I really enjoy. Especially when it’s a book full of hot, alpha, ex-military guys who are stoic and tough on the outside, but who reveal their inner marshmallow center once you get to know them. Mystery wise, this one kept me guessing and although I had my suspicions, I wasn’t sure of the who, what, and why’s until most things were actually revealed.

Annie White has an incredibly dark past. Daughter of a convicted serial killer, she starts having visions which lead her to believe the killings are happening again, even though her father has been dead since shortly after his arrest so many years before. She feels she has no other choice but to go back to the town to see if what she fears is true and if there is some way she can help since she has a freaky connection to the killer. I liked Annie and felt for her and the things she struggles with. Her visions give the book a slight paranormal/sci-fi feel, but nothing that would turn off anyone who’s not into that type of thing.

Rafe Vargas is the fly by the seat of his pants covert ops specialist of the group. With the impending launch of ARES Security the last thing he needs to deal with is dropping everything to see to his late estranged Grandfather’s estate. Suffering from a slight savior complex, he had an instant fascination with Annie when he first laid eyes on her, as all was obviously not right in her world. Intrigued, he basically sort of gently bullies his way into her world, intent on at least figuring her out at least. As the mystery reveals itself and women start disappearing and more and more it seems things revolve around Annie and her past, he finds himself falling for her. As a hero, I was all over Rafe. He was sexy, bossy, and knew what he wanted. I also loved the fact there was no unneeded angst caused by other women or the “I’m not good enough” trope. Once he figured out she was it, he had eyes only for her. Loved this.

I was glad we got to know the rest of the guys that make up ARES security. I love the tight bond they have and the support they gave Rafe and I’m looking forward to reading their stories as the series progresses.

Spice’s rating: 4 stars.

Things that were good:

The murder subplot: It was actually pretty well executed! A bit clichéd, and some of the leaps in logic were super arbitrary and kind of stupid. But it really was actually pretty good. There are much, much worse mystery novels out there.

The serial killer: He was delightfully creepy. But, I don’t like how sympathetic the book seemed towards his character. I mean, it’s nothing new as far as serial killers go, but it was well done.

Things that weren’t so good:

Dialogue tags: The author kept using “demanded” instead of “asked”. It would be like: “’How are you feeling?’ she demanded.” It’s not French! Demander != asked. Sorry, pet peeves. And there were a few words that weren’t actually words. They may be colloquialisms, but it still really bothers me. If you want me to spend actual money to buy a book, at least make sure all words are real words.
“Male”: stop. Stop using that word. What does “male” scent even mean? Just ten week’s worth of Axe? Sweat? But women sweat too!
Gender stereotypes/roles: I get that this kind of thing appeals to some people. But isn’t it insulting that being male is uncivilized and raw sexuality and irrational and all that? Isn’t it insulting that all the women in the book are either:
o Psychotic

o Falling over themselves for the main character and derided by the narrative for it.

o Or completely spineless?

Books don’t have to be politically correct, but it bothers me.

The purple prose: The descriptions are absolutely ridiculous and overblown. Just out of nowhere: “honey strands strewn in the wind”. It was hilarious.
The Taliban thing: You don’t get to use something as heavy as that as backstory, and finish it off in one para. And then only refer to it occasionally.

Overall?

Really? It absolutely might appeal to you. It’s the whole power fantasy, alpha male shtick that I can see people liking, but I definitely don’t. It’s not literary genius and there are some pretty obvious language mistakes. It would really benefit from some hard-core editing.

I don’t know how well it works to combine a kind of serious topic with this kind of overblown, ridiculous romance thing. Is it okay to not take it seriously sometimes?

I don’t know; it seems a bit amateur, and it kind of reads like fanfiction. There is a lot of room for improvement.

It pissed me off sometimes, but I also laughed at how pandering and over the top it was.

You may like it.

Great start to a series. Five hot ex-military friends starting their own security business. Rafe is the first to fall for a girl. Of course the girl is being "stalked" and Rafe and his friends come in to save the day. Whole lot of yumminess hanging around.

Rafe and Annie are so sweet together. Rafe readily steps up to save the day and the girl. His friends immediately step in to help and protect. Annie is strong and easy to like.

I can't wait to read the rest of the partners HEAs. Now is Ms. Ivy going to make Hauke wait until last, or does he get to go next?

Rafe Vargas is a member of the ARES Security team, a group of five military guys who were held in a taliban prison before returning stateside. Now they're working together. Rafe's grandfather dies and he heads up to Newton, Iowa to clean out his house before selling it. While there, he meets Annie White, daughter of the serial killer, the Newton Slayer, who was caught and killed 15 years earlier. Annie has started having disturbing visions and women in Newton have started disappearing in the same manner as the Newton Slayer. She and Rafe end up teaming together and investigating, eventually pulling in the other members of the ARES team. Rafe is nearly head over heels the instant he meets Annie and, being someone with a bit of a savior complex, can't help but step up to help her. But he's also sure it's more than just his savior complex - it's Annie who has doubts. She also has doubts about whether her father really was the true killer and who might be out there continuing the work of 15 years earlier.

Pretty good story with a nice solid suspense plot and rather sexy romance. Rafe and Annie just sort of stumble upon each other and as she reveals her story, Rafe just falls more into the case and gets himself hooked, not only on her and how tough she's had it but on solving this case so she can put the tragedy behind her. I did like the fact that Rafe knew about his savior complex and that Annie was wary of it...because otherwise I would have completely figured that's what their relationship was based on. Rafe was definitely over-protective of Annie and she was way too willing to let him be. It bugged me to no end that he was hiding information from Annie because he hoped to protect her emotionally when she needed to know the truth. I'm not sure if he was right to do so because Annie did seem pretty damn fragile or she could have been strong enough to handle it, since she'd handle everything else up that point. I think I just wanted more open and honest communication between them and a little less over-protection. Protection was fine and needed, but Rafe went overboard just a tad. Also - wish there'd been either more or no focus on the fact that Annie had visions...as it was, this was something I kept forgetting about her because it was used so infrequently. And then it's brought up later why and who she's having the visions with and then completely dropped and forgotten right after it's mentioned.

The suspense plot got very interesting as we went further into Annie's past and her background with her family. This of course reveals who the Newton Slayer was and the reasons behind this person's killing which again, was pretty fascinating (and makes you think about the motivations and reasons and whether they're forgivable or make someone sympathetic) .

Rafe Vargas and four close friends were prisoners and survivors of war. Two years after returning to the U.S., the group decides to start ARES Security in Texas. With the firm on the brink of opening, Rafe is called away to deal with his deceased grandfather’s estate in the middle of nowhere, Iowa.

Annie White had a new job at a prestigious accounting firm, but after six months, she quit. She’s the daughter and only survivor of the Newton Slayer, a mass murderer known for killing women when Annie was a young girl. Annie claims to have had visions of the murders AS THEY HAPPENED … and two nights ago, those visions returned. Now she’s decided to go back to Newton, Iowa, where it all happened, to find out what is going on and why the visions have returned.

Kill Without Mercy is the exciting first book in a new romantic suspense series by Alexandra Ivy. The book is engaging right from the get go, and I had a tough time putting it down. At only one chapter into the book, the author had already pulled out not one, but two mysteries, plus some family drama, without making it overwhelming. The world building was accomplished over the course of the book, mainly through the interactions and dialogue between Rafe and his companions, weaving seamlessly into the storytelling.

When Rafe spots Annie at a local diner, he’s instantly attracted to her like no other. So when he sees that she’s clearly rattled, Rafe jumps in to help Annie out. And when he discovers the dangers that surround Annie, his inner-hero rises up, and he feels the need to protect her. Rafe calls in his buddies to help get to the bottom of the murders.

I completely appreciated that Ms. Ivy wove so much world-building and hints about the other characters into this first book. She didn’t just introduce them and then have them in the background. Rafe and his counterparts are more than a team-they are a family; therefore important to the overall story and series.

The story behind the mystery was gripping, and I was wrapped up trying to solve it along side the characters. The thing was, I got so caught up in the mystery, and it was a gruesome one at that, that the romance felt out of place. I just didn’t feel sparks. It's not that the author did a bad job, but rather, I was more interested in keeping the characters safe and finding out who was behind the murders, than taking time for Rafe and Annie to connect. But really, it didn’t bother me, because I was so caught up in the Newton Slayer storyline and the side stories with the other characters. So if I pull this one apart, the romantic story line was pretty slim and not very engaging, while the suspense was really well done. The book was entertaining, and that’s what matters. Plus, I’m totally hooked on the series based on the bits and pieces about the other characters that the author sprinkled here and there throughout the book.

Overall, I enjoyed Kill Without Mercy, and the suspense storyline was both gripping and engaging. I liked the twists and enjoyed how much of it I was able to figure out - not because it was obvious, but because it was a good mystery, and I loved trying to put the pieces together. With as much as I liked the action and suspense, I found the romance a bit flat and not very engaging. It’s not that they were a bad couple, but I just didn’t care about their love story as much as I cared about discovering what was going on. So in the end, while I didn’t find sparks in the romantic side of the book, the total package is an entertaining story.

I’ve enjoyed the Bayou Heat series and have always wanted to read more books by Alexandra Ivy based on her contributions to the series, but never found the time. So when I saw that she was starting up a new series there was no way I could pass it up but while I liked the book I didn’t love it. Much of it has to do with the fact that while I thought the mystery/suspense side was done well, the romance side of things just fell flat for me.

I liked Annie. The poor girl has had to live with the stigma of her father being a serial killer and ramifications of that have caused her to keep herself somewhat secluded from the world, not that I blame her. But despite all of that she has an innate kindness surrounding her as well as a steely determination to do what she feels is right. Rafe is charming, protective and while has a good alpha streak rolling through him isn’t an asshat and has something of a hero complex, but comes by it honestly. My issue with Rafe though is that I honestly never felt as if I got to know him. I got bits and pieces of his life and how he felt about them, but it all felt as if it was only surface information.

This lack of connection with him made it difficult to really get into the romance that was developing between him and Annie. I got that they were attracted to each other and there was that gut level pull between them but much of it was because I was told that was what was going on, not really shown. There were a few moments that I caught a glimpse of why they’d be good together, and enjoyed the fact that Annie didn’t allow him to run rough shod on her, but I needed more.

Though the romance part didn’t really get me going, I did enjoy the hunt for the serial killer side of things. There were some twists and turns that I saw coming, but there were also some that I didn’t so I enjoyed being able to say “Ha! I knew it” as well as being surprised by the ones I didn’t see coming. I really liked Teagan, Hauk and Max, Rafe’s friends and business partners, didn’t get much time with Lucas but a bit of mystery is always good. They added a good bit of humor as well as gave a little more depth to Rafe and who he is through their bantering and their knowledge of his character.
The Bottom Line: Decent start to a new series and I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next one.

ARC REVIEW

Another exciting book from Alexandra Ivy Kill without Mercy is the start of a new series Ares Security.

From the hellhole of a Taliban prison to sweet freedom, five brave military heroes have made it home—and they’re ready to take on the civilian missions no one else can. Individually they’re intimidating. Together they’re invincible. They’re the men of ARES Security.

Each man with different backgrounds, personalities, talents, and specialties in different fields have been bonded together through trauma. I have great hopes for this series, each of the guys when introduced you almost immediately sympathize with them. They are protective of each other and would do anything for each other. Rafe Vargas is the heart of the group, he is the one that brought them all together with the idea of starting their own company. This band of men is the only family Rafe has ever really had. He had loving parents but his grandfather disowned his father for joining the ARMY. The old man is dead now leaving Rafe everything he had, which was a whole lotta nothing; the man was a hoarder. Either way Rafe still had to go and clean out the house before the realtor can sell it.

Annie White never wanted to return home but she has been having dreams that scare her, dreams that tell her woman have been disappearing again and being murdered. As impossible as it sounds because the manner of which they have been taken is the same as the Newton Slayer and that man has been dead for years. Annie returns afraid of what she might find, hoping that they are just dreams; she never expected her dreams be to true and to be swept of her feet by Rafe. Rafe fell hard and fast for the pretty honey blonde woman, a woman who needed to be saved from her past and her present; a woman with a past even she didn't know about. Rafe together with his Ares brothers help save Annie and expose the truth.

Overall, this is typical fantastic Alexandra Ivy.

Kill Without Mercy by Alexandra Ivy Kill Without Mercy (ARES Security #1)
by Alexandra Ivy

Rafe Vargas is only in Newton, Iowa, to clear out his late grandfather’s small house. As the covert ops specialist for ARES Security, he's eager to get back to his new life in Texas. But when he crosses paths with Annie White, a haunted beauty with skeletons in her closet, he can't just walk away—not when she’s clearly in danger…There’s a mysterious serial killer on the loose with a link to Annie’s dark past. And the closer he gets, the deeper Rafe’s instinct to protect kicks in. But even with his considerable skill, Annie’s courage, and his ARES buddies behind him, the slaying won’t stop. Now it’s only a matter of time before Annie’s next—unless they can unravel a history of deadly lies that won’t be buried.

My Review:
I'm not into the whole 'Me Tarzan you Jane' hero's and heriones who tolerate it.
Being put off the h/h from the beginning didn't help me invest in the rest of the book.
This series has potential but my interest is in the floor.
When did manipulative, controlling, weirdos become the next big thing in he- men lead roles in romance novels? Its everywhere lately. Why are so many of the female leads tolerating this? Why are so many authors using this formula? Why Ivy? I've always liked her male leads but this one was a total turn off for me.

I wasn't expecting the unexplainable, supernatural element to this book, as our heroine, Annie, gets visions about women being murdered. As the daughter of a serial killer, she has struggled to get away from the little town of Newton in Iowa, but she's dragged back to relive the past by these visions, and the locals are suspicious as women are going missing just as she returns.

Rafe Vargas is an all-male fighting machine with a pack of military friends and a high tech security company behind him. He sees Annie and instantly wants to protect her. There is no real tension in their relationship, they both want each other and there's a token resistance for a chapter and then they're in love. No build up at all on that front. I really didn't like the romance aspect of it unfortunately, too much emphasis on Rafe instantly wanting to protect and nurture her, just because she happens to be a hot female.

The male characters all seemed the stereotypical, predictable military characters. The expert in surveillance, the expert in fighting, the tech guy, blah blah blah - they may all be described as hot as hell but I just didn't find them at all interesting. Other than the random psychic visions this book was fairly predictable to me, and didn't really satisfy me from a thriller point of view, or from the romance point of view. The writing was decent and I would definitely check out this author again, but I don't think this series is for me.
