A Daughter's Love

Rate this book
Nell Goodman is a good daughter. Her job in the local brewery is the only thing keeping her and her mother afloat. But with her mother becoming increasingly eccentric and requiring more and more attention, Nell is starting to feel the burden of her responsibilities. Nell asks George Wilmot, the brewery's owner, for help and he offers her a job as a live-in servant at Wilmot Grange. While working at the Grange, Nell begins to grow closer to Devlin, George's son, and it looks like Nell's luck is finally changing. Yet, an unwelcome discovery and an unexpected tragedy shakes everything. Devlin pulls away from Nell, her mother's behavior grows worse, and there are secrets around every corner. Somehow Nell finds herself in the heart of all the drama with no idea of the part she is supposed to play.

This book was far too dull for me to enjoy it. It started off kind of OK with Mabel, a young girl, that's working to get a better life, but then the story took a jump to the future and her daughter Nell took over and then the story started to drag. I just didn't care for her and her mother anymore because the story went on and on and on without really getting anywhere. At least that's how I felt.

Nell has been let go of her work and her mother Mabel is not really clear in the head since Nell's father died when she was little. Mabel accuses a man called George of being responsible for her husband's death and she keeps on doing it over and over in the book, living in the past and letting her daughter take care of her. And, at that time in history, 1910, the only places for a woman like that either a lunatic asylum or a workhouse and Nell is trying everything in her power to keep her mother from the places and I should be touched by her plight, but I was more annoyed with Mabel all the time getting in trouble and speaking to everyone that she met how George killed her husband. Nell is a very good daughter and I feel I should be taken with her love for her mother, but I couldn't help being annoyed with Mabel and I wonder how on earth could she even raise a daughter with her state of mind, but perhaps it deteriorated. It's hard to know when you jump twenty years ahead in time.

I just kept reading to know how it all would and to my surprise (a bit of sarcasm) it had a HEA ending with Nell finding out the truth about the circumstances around her father's death and finding true love at the end. The true love thing felt weird since there had not been much said about the love between them before that. I would have preferred a more subtle ending with some hints about a promising future for them instead.

This book felt long and it took me a long time to read it since I kept reading other things instead because I just couldn't really get into the story and I wish I could because the author died this summer so this is her last book. But this book just didn't work for me, I didn't find myself engrossed in the story and several times I just skimmed the text to get on with the story to get to the end. and, that's too bad because it didn't start off so bad.

Thank you Piatkus for providing me with a free copy for an honest review!

In ‘A Daughter’s Love’ we meet Nell Goodman. Nell has been taking care of her mother Mabel ever since her farther died suddenly when she was just a baby. Nell is the one who works to bring money in. But sometimes this becomes really hard. Mabel never recovered after her husband died and now she keeps thinking it’s still twenty years ago. Working and taking care of Mabel, is taking its toll on Nell. And when Nell loses her job because she had to bring her mother home, she is desperate to find a new home and job for her and her mother. But a terrible secret from the past is getting in the way of Nell’s job search.

I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this book before I started reading. Since I love Historical Romance novels I really wanted to give this one a try. And I definitely was in need of a good romantic novel. (Something about this cold weather makes me want to read romance novel!!)
The writing is ‘A Daughter’s Love’ is easy to follow. Right from the beginning I really wanted to know how this story would end. So I kept reading because I just really wanted to know what would happen next.

But I had some issues with this book. For one, I thought for a long while that I was reading the wrong book with the wrong cover. The back of the cover said this book was about Nell and Devlin, but I was reading about Mabel and Harold. It definitely took me a while to get what was going on and that this book was written in two parts. This really bothered me a little.
Secondly this book was not really a Historical Romance novel if you ask me. It was Historical, but the romance wasn’t there until maybe the last page of the book. This book was a story about life as a woman in the early nineteen hundreds. It was hard, sad and at times really frustrating to read.

In the end I did enjoy reading this book. It was very different from what I expected, but it really was a story that touched me in the end. The title ‘A Daughter’s Love’ fits perfectly to this book and it was in it’s own way, a beautiful story about a daughter’s love for her mother.

I loved this book and read it in just over a day. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I was slightly disappointed with the ending. There was the happy ending that you want but, for me, there were also quite a few unanswered questions. Overall though a great book.

This book is split into two parts, the frist focusing on Nell’s mother and events there, and the second part focuses on Nell.

I loved the frist part of the story. The romance slowly built and the story is great. There is something mysterious going on with the dealings in the brewy, a mystery to be solved and a love to be championed.

But then the second part of the story seemed to let the rest of the book down. I liked Nell, I thought she was a fantastic character. She was determined and strong and she never gave up. She was a character who was really easy to root for.

But the story, it dragged on! There was lots of wondering around and statements of determination. And of things going wrong and then being resolved. It was a bit boring to be honest.

And then to make matters worse, all the issues are resolved quickly and yet I still have questions and I felt like some of the background or the knowledge I wanted was missing. To make sense of the story, like the hold over George (without going into too much detail!). I felt I got half evasive answers.

This was a great story but I was left wanting. One that is for all the ages and one for whatever your mood!

I was sorry to read that Catherine King passed away in 2015 and this was her last novel.
I enjoyed this story although in places I found it to be a,little bit slow. It has quite short chapters which is always good as it makes me feel I'm getting through it quickly and there's always time for another chapter. The central character is Nell Goodman who looses her job and has to try to find other employment while also looking after her mom who has suffered from a breakdown many years ago and never recovered.

This historical romance is a wonderful, gripping read. Nell is a powerful character for the time period she lives in, and her journey in this complex, unforgiving world is hard to put down! Highly recommended.
