These annual books are treasures of when Taste of Home Magazine was at its prime. I am enjoying the early years leading up to when I became a subscriber.

This cookbook was my October 2014 choice as I select a cookbook a month to try out. I received this cookbook years ago from my grandmother. She gave me this one along with a 1998 subscription to Taste of Home magazine while I attended college. The recipes are simple - requiring little skill or advanced tools in the kitchen - and quick. I've made a few recipes out of the magazine over the years (keep a subscription because it reminds me of my grandmother), but until this month I hadn't made a single thing from this cookbook. For nostalgia reasons, I wanted to rate this one higher. Yet, there wasn't a single recipe I made this month that I would go out and buy the ingredients to make again. It wasn't that the recipes were bad...the opposite. Unlike my previous months' selections, there wasn't an inedible recipe made from this one. All were edible and generally OK, although under-seasoned. But we didn't like any of them enough for me to go out of my way to make again. For example, the herbed pot roast. This is a basic pot roast with carrots, potatoes, and onions seasoned with a dried herb blend. It was OK but wasn't better than my usual pot roast. The rich chocolate brownie recipe was pretty good - good texture and frosting - but it was so sweet that the sweet overpowered the chocolate. Decent brownies, but I've made other recipes that we liked better. The only true negative of this cookbook is that the cook times for all the meats I made were too aggressive. I would suggest using a meat thermometer to cook meats to the correct temp rather than use the cook times here, most of which were way too long overcooking the dish.
For first time cooks, college students with limited cookware or tools, or anyone looking to build a basic recipe collection, this cookbook would be OK.

If I had to pick ONE Taste of Home annual to buy, this is it. I originally went through all my mother's back issues of the magazine and noted all the recipes I wanted--this book had the most by far. This appears to be when Taste of Home magazine was at it's peak--several years after starting yet before the publishers started tinkering with a good thing.

LOVE this cookbook...
So many of the recipes in this book are on the Blackburn meal rotation. I have memorized the rich chocolate brownie recipe because I make it 1 to 2 times per week. The recipes are just good old fashioned weekday meal ideas with the sweet areas added in.
