Jade may be losing her mind. Or gaining a piece - she's not sure. Something she thought was dead inside her is waking up. Something she thought she'd lost years ago.
Someone she thought she'd lost years ago.
Lily.
Each night, Jade dreams of her childhood, of a lake, of Lily, and of a strange, cloaked woman who will not show her face. Jade starts sleepwalking and losing control of her powers. Coven witches complain of abnormal magic in the Nature Preserve and Jade doesn't know if she's responsible for it or not. Her lizard familiar, Bruce, is showing signs of sickness - something that only happens to familiars when their witch is ill. Her body isn't made to hold the kind of power she has; maybe the stress of being a witch is finally catching up to her. Jade needs help. Can she trust enough to ask for it? Can she accept it when it's offered? And what will happen if she does?

Margarita loves the art, creativity and romanticism of storytelling. Sometimes, however, the act of putting pen to paper proves challenging, elusive. She develops genuine, relatable characters which grow in the hearts of her readers. From that foundation, the stories flourish into a warm friend.
She enjoys pursuits which blur the lines between the analytical and creative sides of her brain. This includes her day job in electronic data management, where she uses her creativity to solve logical problems, and also her lessons learning to play the cello, where she finds beauty in the structure of music and the instrument. She believes there is a place for both logic and imagination to work together. When they do, the results are magical.
Margarita has a special spot in her heart for dogs and lives with three of them. It can be a little overwhelming but the quality snuggle time makes up for it.
I am thoroughly enjoying these books and the characters. The main character Jade has been growing throughout and learning through her trials.
I only have one complaint. I enjoy them so much I can't put it down. It really only took me about 2.5 days to read it and now I will most likely wilol have to wait a year before the next one as this one has just come out!!!
There are times inhaling books are not necessarily a good thing. At any rate I would recommend this book and the complete series to anyone I know as an enjoyable read for it has a delightful mix of paranormal, fantasy and mystery all rolled into one.
Jade starts hearing Lily and her eyes are occasionally turning the green of Lily's. She desperately wants Lily back and has been very lonely since she left. It was very hard for Jade to be suddenly on her own and this is a big factor in her PTSD. We don't know why yet, but for some reason Lily can remember a time without Jade, but Jade can't remember a time without sharing her body with another person.
The coven is learning to cope with the new magic after Paris had to tune it to Jade's. It's causing a lot of calls to come into her job with Counter-Magic. Jade is having nightmares about sparrows and water. Sometimes she wakes up in the closet, but she's also woken up in the bathroom and I think the kitchen.
Lots of exciting stuff happens and I don't want to give it away. Jade is relaxing around Paris, but any romance is a long way off for Jade.
I really enjoyed this book and tried not to let the many typos detract from it.
I read this immediately after the first two (the advantage of finding a series well into the author's timeline) and I did enjoy it as much as the original two books in the series. I wish the "romance" would move a little faster between the main characters -- or even just the "intimacy" rate increase.
Transition to Coven life hasn't exactly been easy but things seem to sorting themselves out. Jade's enjoying her new job solving magical problems, she's got a circle of friends she can call on for help and she's got her sewer lizard, Bruce, who turns out to be her super rare witchy familiar. So all is good.
Except for the dreams that are starting to intrude on her life, all the complaints regarding bad feelings and Jade's magic at the lake and the constant visits from the demon, Seth, warning her of potential danger. But Jade is handling it. Probably.
This installment was a bit too long and the pacing was just a bit unbalanced. It felt like the author was waffling while trying to build up to all the drama and then just decided to hit with everything at once and it was just a bit too much. There was revelation after revelation and then there was an abrupt cliffhanger and it didn't quite work for me. That said, the writing was still good and I was still invested in Jade and the plot, it was just a bit bumpier than the previous installments.
As for Jade, I loved Jade's prickly nature in the first two books but Jade's stunted emotions got a bit trying after a while in this one. I felt like she regressed a lot in this one, reverting to a much more juvenile state of mind. It was explained by the end but by then I don't know that I really cared. Plus with Jade acting so young, the resulting sparks of romance between her and Paris just felt wrong. To be fair, Paris was all young and fluttery as well but I just wasn't feeling it.
In regards to the drama, I just wanted Jade to spit it out. The waffling over trust was just tiring. Especially when she knew she couldn't keep the dreams and the sleepwalking and her feelings about the lake to herself. I would've respected her more for trying to get herself the help she needed. Reading her go back and forth between wanting to tell and never coming forward was just irritating.
The dynamics of Jade and Lily was much more interesting but the build up was really long and the ending really abrupt. I have no doubt it'll be addressed in the next two books but it was annoying that it was just there and it added more questions than any answers. To be fair, there were answers but definitely not enough to satisfy my curiosity. On the other hand, it was definitely one of the more unique storylines out there. In some ways I guessed where it was going, in others definitely not.
I feel like the potential contained within this volume wasn't quite unveiled in the output. It's well written and contains a unique plotline (and a lot of surprises besides) but it's let down by the prolonged emotional turbulence and the unbalanced pacing. Regardless, I'll be picking up the rest of the series - I have to know what happens! 3.5 stars rounded to 3 stars.
a unique twist to the usual witch and coven stories. Jade has troubles sleeping, taking up sleep walking and its making her question her sanity. Jade has always had Lily but the truth about herself and Lily is almost mind blowing. Especially when Jade learns the identity of the Sparrow woman. As Paris helps Jade uncover the truth and Lily is now part of the coven, he is in the surprise of his life and no one could prepare him for the secrets, lies and truth.
I thought this was a trilogy, but was very happy to find out that the series will continue! Jade's back story was finally explained (at least in part), and I have to say it's one of the more original plots I have had the pleasure to read in quite a while. I can't wait to see what the next part of the story has in store for us.
I know this story had to be written to continue on with the series, but this was so boring. I had to really push my way through this thing. Suggestion: Skim the first half of the book and then concentrate on the final half. Needless to say, I can't wait for the next.
Finally a five star. No obvious mystery or wtf who's that? in there. The revelations were astounding and all that happened, with Lily, Paris and Jade... OMG good!
Great book. It needs another in the series! What happens now that Paris knows his mother is alive? What is the favor that has is pending from Jade? Definitely another book!
