Will Adams has tried his hand at a multitude of careers over the years. Most recently, he worked for a London-based firm of communications consultants, before giving it up to pursue his lifelong dream of writing fiction. His first novel, The Alexander Cipher, is a modern-day quest to find the lost tomb of Alexander the Great. Published in November 2007 by Harper Collins, it is being translated into twelve languages, including French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch, and will be published in the USA by Grand Central Publishing.
I didn't get as drawn into this book as I did with others by this author, but overall it was still a very enjoyable read. There are a lot of different characters, and I think that makes it a little hard to follow, but it does all come together eventually.
I’m not usually one for mysteries, but Adams makes it more than palatable by mixing it with archaeology, history, and myth. The Trojan War, and especially the fate of Aeneas, is especially interesting, so this story, relying on the mystery of Dido’s palace, is doubly so.
As usual with Adams’ books, it helps to be familiar with the history or myth on which a particular book is based, but it’s not a must. The author does a good job of bringing the reader up to speed. It transitions smoothly into the second plot line regarding the dividing of Cyrus between Greece and Turkey.
The book made an impression, and I may pick up his other stand-alone novel.
Started as a poor mans Da Vinci Code and then tapered off to be a B grade action story that relied on a content of Ancient History to make it readable . For me it didn’t work
It took a while to get into this book. The action is there from the start but the reader is kept in the dark on so many of the motivations. Finally the motivations are revealed in the last hundred pages.
The story takes place in Turkey, Egypt, and Cyprus and involves the legends of the Trojan War, Dido, and Aeneas. Recent history of Turkey and the 1973-74 war in Cyprus also figure in. An entertaining read with some elucidation of legend and history.
A bit of a let down. Most of the premise of the book was given away 2/3 of the way through the book. The historical treasure hunt appeared to have been tacked on in order to keep Adams' core fans happy .
fast paced thriller based in turkey and Cyprus and a sub plot of a terrorist bomb going off, also the delight of the classics too with abit of homer as well.
Will Adams does it again. I am a fan, and have been for some time and this one did not let me down! Go out and grab your copy today, you won't regret it!
Nuts and bolts thriller, slightly out of the ordinary given the classical references but while it rolls along, it won't live too long in the memory. Ideal airport fodder!
The book was ok. I liked the main character but the plot/story seemed like it was a bit disjointed. I have liked other books that he has written so this could be a one off for me.
