She presents herself as male in her comics. She publishes her webcomics on her weibo account. She has never claimed to be trans or even brought the subject up, but uses male pronouns on her Weibo account because of her Mosspaca character.
from illustratorslounge.com: "Old Xian (Old先) is based in Hangzhou, China. She graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in 2013. Whilst at university she meet a writer called Moss. The two decide to collaborate and released two manhuas before even graduating. In 2012 they released The Specific Heat Capacity of Love as well as Xiao Chou Dan Ni (aka Clown Danny). Xiao Chou Dan Ni earned Xian a Shueisha Tezuka Award and a Golden Dragon Awards."
What...?! I was just hit--in the face!--with FEELZ. Thirty-five pages, about the love between a seagull and a shark, imagine that!, and I'm crying while my heart squeezes itself in my chest, holy sorrowful jezus.
Since Kynthos-the-Archer recommended it to me, I thought it would be some depraved kinky dark BDSM manga. To my shock, it was not. Instead, it is a melancholy piece filled with yearning, mourning and sorrow. Beautifully drawn, beautifully written, this moving piece of art is touching and calls to those who are ocean lovers. This magical story of water and air lovers who could be enemies yet become more is devastating. It hits upon a sore point for me. Shark killings. This love story blends in the horrific and wasteful practice of shark fin fishing. Deplorable.
Loved the story and highly recommended to everyone.
At first, I didn’t understand what was happening until I saw the dead seagull then it all clicked into place and I cried a little bit because that was so sad. The Specific Heat Capacity of Love was written so simple and beautiful, the art was gorgeous too.
Readers will feel melancholy slowly flow through their tears and veins. May the ocean and the sky exist in sorrowful harmony.
This is only a one shot and I've read it 7162728 times but I still cry every single time. Whomst've known that the love story of a shark and a seagull will make me feel like this make it make sense.
So I tried out reading this shounen ai one shot about a girl who finds a strange looking dude while she's hanging out with friends on a beach. It turns out the strange dude is a seagull and his lover is a shark. To be honest, I didn't have a effin clue wtf was going on lol. As some review said, it is kinda poetic in which I don't normally read but at the same time, the whole story left me astray...
It's a beautiful sad and short story about a seagull who became friends with a shark. It is weird, but the good kind of weird, the one that makes you realize that art is art and therei's no limiting rule to it. It can get as strange and pointless as you make it, as short and as dramatic as you like and it's still art, whether it gets popular or not, appreciated or not.
Wavering between 4 and 5 stars, let's go with 5 because the art, plot and characters are just so good. I think I'm in love with the artist's style and plots.
This is the beautiful story of Seagull and Fish, two would-be enemies that became something else entirely. It is sad and melancholic, heartbreaking in all its simplicity and with an art style that takes your breath away.
I only wish it weren't so short. I really would have loved more glimpses of their relationship (but then again, I would probably cry my heart out). Well.
What an original concept! The story really blew me away, and it's the sort to keep you thinking about it afterwards. The art work is beautiful. It is very short, but in a good way. It got the message across powerfully and succintly. I often find that in mangas/doujinshis/manhuas there are a lot of repetitive and needless descriptions, streams of thought of and dialogue. This is not one of those. Prepare to be blown away by the ocean breeze ;)

This is the best from the six mangas I read.
I held my breath when I finished this story. It really did blew me away. The art is so clean. The story is so unique. The characters are so bizarre.
I started this manga without no idea or anything what I was reading. It was confusing at first as I am not sure where it was heading. But yeah, when I totally understood what was happening, there’s no turning back. I can no longer unread what I just read. The story is so melancholic that is full of yearning for re connection and solitary loneliness.
How the manga was illustrated perfectly fit the flow of the story. The art is so magical and detailed. I felt like, I was able to feel the strong ocean wind in my face. It’s so realistic. I was able to feel the pain of the characters. I was with the characters in their journey for answers. The creators crafted a story that is more than just a love story. It became an exploration of the complexities of falling in love and the sacrifices that we can do for the one we love. I appreciate how environmental awareness was infused to the story. It maybe odd, but it worked for me.
Devastating and totally heart-wrenching, this manga has a powerful message to its readers. More than just accepting fate, it talks about the actions that we people do to our environment specifically to other living creatures here in our planet. The book’s story revolves around two characters who became separated because of people’s inhumane actions. This book’s purpose is for people to re-evaluate their actions and to practice selflessness. This book encourages its readers to practice empathy towards other living creatures.
I like the flow of the story, it moves perfectly well with its pacing. The story is really tragic but towards the ending, there’s that redemptive feeling. Breathless.
"HE WAS A LONELY FISH. PERHAPS EXISTENCE MEANT LONELINESS TO HIM. EVERYTHING AROUND HIM WAS BEAUTIFUL, AND HE COULD SWIM WITH SUCH SPEED, SUCH THAT HE HAD NO ENEMIES, AND NO ONES WANTED TO BE WITH HIM."
"IS YOUR SKY BLUE ALWAYS BLUE OR IS IT ONLY MY OCEAN THAT'S LIKE THIS..."
"SEAGULLS ARE THE BEST TYPE OF BAIT. THE SHARKS COME AS SOON AS THE SMELL BLOOD."
"BEFORE HE HAD TIME TO BE TERRIFIED, PEOPLE HELD HIM DOWN AND TOOK AWAY HIS ONLY WING, HIS SOLE PRIDE. WHEN HIS SKIN EMERGED FROM WATER, HE COULD NO LONGER DISTINGUISH WHERE THE PAIN WAS FROM. STRUGGLING AND CRYING WAS INSUFFICIENT, TO EXPRESS THE PAIN OF THAT MOMENT, SO HE CHOSE TO SUFFER SILENTLY. THAT WAS THE LAST MEMORY LIFE GAVE HIM."
"MAY I USE THIS STORY IN EXCHANGE FOR A FAVOR? JUST ONE. THIS IS ALSO MY LAST WISH.
WILL YOU TAKE ME BACK INTO THAT OCEAN? HE IS WAITING FOR ME."
"I KNEW YOU WOULD COME."
"EVERYTHING AROUND HIS WAS BEAUTIFUL, HE HAD NATURAL SPEED. HE HAD A FRIEND CALLES SEAGULL.
FISH RETURNED TO HIS SKY, YET SEAGULL CHOSE THE SEA. I AM STILL UNABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE TERROR AND BRAVERY OF SINKING INTO THE SILENT OCEAN."
This is a story of friendship between a seagull and a fish.
First of all, let me say this: I am not a fan of manhua or manhwa. This one shot has been on my want to read list for sometimes and I almost removed it from my reading list and I am so glad I didn't.
This manhua presented friendship in a very unique way. The concept was very unusual. The characters were amazing.
I would like to talk about something about the art though. The sketching of the nature and surroundings were beautiful. But the main two characters could've been sketched a little sharply? Specially the jaw lines and chin? I don't know. It's my personal opinion. The rest is just awesome.
If you are an one-shot reader, or any kind of reader I highly recommend this one. Happy reading.
This was the first manhua that I read, my first heartbreak too. I remember getting a recommendation from a friend a few years back and reading this while sobbing in my bedroom.
I read this again yesterday. I still haven't truly understood what the artists were trying to say. But it was still heartbreaking to read such a relationship. It shows me how much one person could willingly give to another.
Great work. Will be reading this again in the far future.
Before I even began to read, the title, "The Specific Heat Capacity of Love," had gotten my attention. I was captivated by the artistic touch and story line. The symbolic meanings of the story truly brought me to tears. I would recommend it to anyone who understands the metaphorical meanings behind a main plot.
The story of this oneshot is about a girl name Xue Yi who unraveled the mystery of the melancholic relationship between Seagull and Shark. I love the art style, it's absolutely refreshing and breathtaking.
