Like a Love Song went straight for my heart. The characters, their histories, their futures, the setting, the plot. All of it spoke to me on a level that went beyond the romance and aimed steadfastly toward Jesus. Joe and Sue’s love story was, of course, a highlight of the book for me – it was cute, sweet, and even breath-stealing on occasion. But in all honesty, it paled in comparison to this truth that Camille Eide framed so gorgeously: God’s love never fails.

After turning the last page of Like a Love Song, I just sat and pondered the question, what made this story so very special? Elements that I always look for were present, such as a vivid sense of place – the Juniper Ridge Canyon area of rural Oregon – richly-drawn characters, a well-crafted storyline, and a strong spiritual thread. Relationship dramas often lack the action that some readers crave, yet I was immediately captured by the complexity of the characters and emotional depth of this story.

In a perfect world, every child would know the love of a human family, yet this is a far-from-perfect world. One factor that elevates Like a Love Song is the realism that makes this such an eye-opening story. At its heart is Juniper Ranch, a home for at-risk youth – such as children from terminated adoptions, discarded and unwanted. Children with the foster care background – having lived in a home, yet never quite part of the family. Children always on the outside, completely stripped of self-worth. I will never again look at children in need and those who commit to caring for them in the same way.

Sue and Joe have both been betrayed by a parent or foster parent, and the far-reaching effects of their experiences are fascinating. Joe loves the Lord and has a gift for worshipping with passionate abandon that makes this worshipper envious. Sue, on the other hand, is driven to protect these children from disappointment and make them self-reliant, without ever needing anyone. “When you don’t need love, no one can hurt you.” The children totally captured me emotionally – but it was Jasmine, with an unimaginable childhood in Cambodia, and Chaz, who likes to take things apart – who stole my heart.

But I believe that it is the spiritual element that makes Like a Love Song so special. Camille has used the power of story to entertain, but most importantly, to draw our focus to the One who loves us more than we could ever imagine and is always working things out for us – in His time. We often see fictional characters erect walls around their hearts in an effort to block out all that would cause hurt, but Sue’s self-realization made me reflect on the unintentional effect of this action: “The walls around your heart not only keep people locked out, but they also keep fear and hurt locked in.”

From the children themselves, to a moving redemption scene, to a hope for the future, Like a Love Song is a poignant and compelling story, one that often brought me to tears. This verse of Scripture that Sue found on the home’s old sign beautifully encapsulates the overarching theme and will speak to all who read this story . . .

“Father to the fatherless, defender of widows – this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; He sets the prisoners free and gives them joy” (Psalm 68:5-6).

Camille Eide is a gifted writer who crafts stories that touch the heart. Highly recommended.

I loved this book! Susan Quinn, social worker turned surrogate mom to foster teens, is a very strong, compelling character. She uses her past to push her to do everything she can for the kids in her care and to relate to them on a level that others can't. When she reaches the end of her rope, she turns to the only option that seems available, a brawny handyman with a guitar and a relationship with a God he keeps calling Father. However, this handyman also has a past and is on a mission of his own. As the sparks fly between them, can these two work together to save the group home and be there for the kids in her care? Or will their pasts catch up to them and tear them apart?

The kids in this story will break your heart! I loved the interactions Susan and Joe had with these kids and the way they were able to relate to them and help them. Their individual personalities shine through and you'll root for their happy ending.

This book is very well written with plenty of drama, a little bit of mystery, an endearing romance and an emotional, inspirational, compelling story-line. You won't want to put it down once you start it!

Like a Love Song is a beautiful story of perfect love casting out fear. Sue has been hurt and damaged by life experiences. Growing up in foster care, the examples her mother showed her, all add to hardening her heart and making her a jaded, fearful woman. My heart ached for her. Fear has her so entrapped, that she operates her group home teaching the kids that they could only depend on themselves because she's too afraid to love them with a mother's love they deserve.

Then Joe comes to the home offering help as a handyman. He decides to walk in obedience of the Lord to show Sue God's love. He has is own issues, trauma from his time in foster care, but His dependence on God has made him a peaceful man. But one wrong misstep opens old wounds.

Y'all there are some heart wrenching moments in this novel, but the payoff is so worth the tears. Ms. Eide has a way with the pen that creates a world that is realistic. One that makes you wish you could help the characters in the story. This novel tugged at my emotions until they had no choice but to spill over at the beauty of the story. The message: perfect love casts out fear. Like a Love Song captures that scripture perfectly.

Susan Quinn, a foster mom to castaway kids, just wants these children to have a healthy, safe environment in which to grow. Her childhood was a nightmare, so to give these kids hope and stability, Susan would feel like a success. But because of her past, she's not very trusting, and men are at the top of her list of who not to trust.

Joe is trying to find his siblings who were separated when their mother abandoned them, later to be found and taken to different foster homes. Joe just happened to have grown up in the very house Susan Quinn is running, only then it was called "My Father's House". Prior to that, though, he had some awful experiences, but this last foster home was his salvation, literally.

He found himself at Susan Quinn's foster home on his way to another job, broke, and all his things stolen out of his truck. She gave him a job while he waited to start the other, but much of the time she wasn't sure she could trust him, especially with the kids.

God's words to him were clear. "Show her My love". But a self-sufficient, broken, healing abused woman has no need nor desire for God. Joe had his work cut out for him, but these kids that had such rough beginnings were a huge bonus. He loved them and they loved him. It was just Susan that had her doubts.

I'm not sure I'd classify this as a romance novel, but it sure is a love story. Very good, inspiring and worth the read!

Oh, just an aside...this was an audiobook read by Becky Doughty. I've had the pleasure of listening to her lovely voice in other books. She does a great job!

LIKE A LOVE SONG was so much more than I was expecting. This story was sweet, but it was also heartbreaking, emotional, inspirational, and deeply romantic. It pulled at my heart with anger, frustration, hope, and joy. A heartfelt and beautifully written story from beginning to end.

I really felt for these characters. They're full of broken hearts and pasts. They're searching for love even when they fight against it. I wanted so much for them and so much for Sue. I really wanted to shake her sometimes for not letting go, opening her heart, and taking a chance. At the same time, I saw why she felt and acted as she did. Joe was amazing. I mean 100% man with a heart of gold and a work ethic, honesty, and steadiness that was a perfect match for Sue. I loved the kids and each of their personalities, as well as Bertie who worked at the ranch.

The story is so heart-wrenching. The kids. The adults. The abuse and neglect. How much these kids need love and acceptance and a place to call home. How much Sue and Joe need them and need to make a family. How it all comes tumbling down. How Joe keeps his faith and how Sue fights against that faith. This is definitely a Christian romance, but the inspiration was powerful. There was hope that one day Sue would accept, forgive, and embrace a future of hope and love. It was beautiful.

Another wonderful story from Eide's that will pull on your heartstrings, inspire, and even bring some swoon-worthy moments. I loved it!

I simply could not put this book down! Joe is a hardworking man whose heart has been softened by his faith despite a scarred childhood. Sue has lost her way thanks to her own horrible experiences, but fails to see all the ways God has saved her & has lost her faith entirely. An injury puts Joe & Sue in close contact, & they learn to lean on each other just a little. The teens & staff on Sue's foster care ranch are never without conflict or bad decisions, but it's just one big happy family...or not! But there's no telling if the sparks between Joe & Sue will warm their hearts or burn before some deep betrayals cut them all to the bone.

This book pulls at your heart strings from the first page. Sue and Joe are both hurting from their past as children, will they help each other heal and find the love they both deserve.
I found it slow in places, and somewhat predictable.
This book is about forgiveness, not only receiving it from our Heavenly Father, but learning to forgive yourself.
Overall it was a good read, one perfect for summer!
Highly recommended!

Like a Love Song is a masterfully written story by Camille Eide.
The characters in this story are diverse, well-developed and personable.

Susan Quinn is about to lose her home and land on which she runs a group home for teen that have difficulty in the foster care system. On a referral from a friend, Susan hires Joe, a handyman in between oil rig jobs, on a temporary basis during the holiday season when she comes up short-staffed. Susan is an all work, no nonsense woman who devotes her heart and life to the teens.

Joe is a laid-back, hard working, high faith Christian with a guitar and the love of a good song. Joe relates well with the teens and quickly earns their trust.

Both Susan and Joe have childhood issues that surface as they battle to save the ranch from foreclosure. Joe's plan to confront his former foster father for past sins dispates when he finds the man and his disabled daughter living is utter poverty. Joe's decision to take charge of his former family's welfare is both an inspiration and a mytery to Susan.

One of my favorite scenes in this book is Joe singing in the dinning room and one of the teens joins in. They do a little duck dance around the dinning room table. "I lika way you walk..." I found myself singing that song for days after reading it.

There a lot of plot twists in this story thay I will not mention so as not to spoil the surprises.

Camille Eide's writing is vivid and sensual. Almost too much so during the two brief kissing scenes. I sort of felt like I was intruding on private moments that should remain private between the two people involved. The language was completely clean, but the reader can sense the heat between Joe and Susan as their love risks exposure, backs off and then moves forward again. Susan's trust issues keep her guarded regarding romantic relationships.

Overall, an excellent story of loyalty, love and faith.

I really enjoyed the first book I had read by this author and got this one as soon it was available, and I loved it as much as I did Like There's No Tomorrow. It is the compelling story of Sue, the director of a home for troubled youth, who is fighting to keep the home open and Joe, an oil rig worker, that is trying to help her but she is not sure she can trust him. The author does a wonderful job of capturing the personalities and heartaches of the children that Sue is trying to help that have been through so much and are needing love and stability so badly. I was pulled into the story line from the first pages and the author kept me turning pages to see what happens. It is a beautiful story of love, hope and second chances.

Once I started this book I became more intrigued with the characters as the ook developed. I wanted to learn the inner workings of the main characters and more about their back stories to see how their past shaped their present. The author did a great job developing the plot, and throwing in some good twists to build up the momentum, especially between Joe and Sue. You will find deeper appreciation for the word "family", and realize it can also be used to describe people who go through life together, support each other through the ups and downs, and who want to see other grow to be the best forms of themselves.

I laughed, I cried, and cheered in the end. The author writes characters that are so real, they stuck with me afterwards. While some aspects of the story line are difficult, they’re handled with sensitivity. The description of the setting (Central Oregon) was so real, I could smell the sage brush. This is a story about loyalty, sacrifice and forgiveness that will tug on your heartstrings.
May I suggest you pick a weekend when you haven’t much to do, curl up on the couch with a casserole made and plenty of hot tea so that you won’t have to stop reading. Because putting this book down is nearly impossible.

Camille Eide does it again. Her ripped-from-the-headlines reality takes the reader into the desperation felt by two lonely people, both doing their best to make the lives entrusted to them better. I've read both of Camille's books, and they are amazing! She digs so deeply into her characters that when you put the book down for that last time, you continue to wonder what happens to them. For book two, Camille has chops! And she's not afraid to use her love of writing to create amazing new stories. This is a keeper to be read again and again.

Like a Love Song is a delightful romance, and oh so much more. It’s one of those books you never want to end. I didn’t know what was coming next, but I knew it was going to be good. Like a roller coaster ride, the story towed me up steep hills, then plunged me downward into deep valleys and carried me through the heartaches, adventures, and the joys of the residents of Juniper Ranch.

Truly fine work by Camille Eide. I’m ready for her next book.

Like A Love Song is a captivating ode to second chances, love, faith and forgiveness. From the witty, often heart-wrenching dialogue, to the prose that conjures up the scent of pine and warmth of the sun, this author knows how to keep a reader turning page after page -anxious to see how the story plays out, but sad to reach the end of a wonderful literary journey.

When Sue, an untrusting foster group-home owner meets Joe, a big-hearted oil rig worker, fireworks fly--but not in a good way! Mix in a handful of ragtag foster kids and nothing is certain. Author Camille Eide skillfully draws us through a story of brokenness and hurt to a place of hope—ever pointing to the true source of healing. And love. Five stars! Highly Recommended.

Like a Love Song was an endearing, edge of my seat, couldn't put it down story! My heart went out to Susan & the children in her "orphanage" with each twist and turn in the plot. Christian author Camille Eide does a wonderful job of weaving in the importance of faith and how past experience shapes our views of God. This is a must read filled with emotion, suspense, romance and faith!

Enjoyable Read

Light predicable read and yet hard to put down. Funny in parts and yet in most parts it tears at your heart strings for the lack of love for so many children that have or do live in abusive homes. This book is the story of a woman who is trying to run a home for unwanted children. Look forward to reading other books by this author. Christian fiction genre.

When I finished this book, I had a happy, peaceful smile on my face. Difficult issues were dealt with sensitivity. God's grace was brought to light through powerful characters and a realistic plot where the fate of children of failed adoptions hinged on one woman's determination and struggle
to give them a home. This was a fantastic book to end the year with!
