I wanted what she had, she had what I wanted. With her long blonde hair and her legs that never ended, she had him, but I wanted him. We can’t always have what we want, and sometimes that’s the way life is meant to be. Sometimes destiny places other people in our path, a path that should not be mixed. But also sometimes, just sometimes, the paths cross, causing an explosive reaction. Tanner was my crush. A crush that I’ve had since I first laid eyes on him. But now he’s dating my friend… my beautiful, flawless and perfect friend. Then out of nowhere Kyrone bursts into my life, taking me over bit by bit. I don’t know how to feel about that. I don’t know what to do. He frustrates me. He annoys me. But most of all, he makes me smile.
USA Today Best Selling Author T.L. Smith loves to write her characters with flaws so beautiful and dark that you can’t turn away from. Her books have been translated into several languages. If you don’t find her in her home town of Queensland, Australia you can usually find her travelling around the world to sitting on a beach in Bali, to exploring Alcatraz in San Francisco or walking the streets of New York.
C.J. and Kyrone attend college together and have a habit of antagonizing each other. C.J. likes Tanner who is a teammate of Kyrone's on the football team. Kyrone is the captain of the team and has girls falling all over him. He has a rule of only dating them once and not looking at them again. C.J. finds herself becoming drawn to Kyrone after she realizes that Tanner and her friend Katrina declare their love for one another. Throughout most of this book C.J. was so self-centered that she missed all that was happening in her friend's lives. She even didn't know that he friend was getting married, nor who she was marrying. Kyrone and C.J. both stubbornly let years go by without trying to see if a real relationship will work. I should have felt sympathy for C.J. but instead found myself thinking she was a self-centered b**ch most of the book. I had a hard time with the fact that whole years pass without these two seeing each other or even keeping in contact with each other but still professing their love. Parts of their history were glossed over and that left me with some unanswered questions. When they finally get together we are given a brief glimpse at the HEA. It was one drama after another and left me depressed instead of happy reading it. I am all for some angst but the constant angst in this book was just too much for me personally.
TL Smith never ceases to amaze us, every book we pick up from her has blown us away and this one didn't disappoint. TL's plots and characters pull you in and keep you hooked.
"We can’t always have what we want, and sometimes that’s the way life is meant to be. Sometimes destiny places other people in our path, a path that should not be mixed. But also sometimes, just sometimes, the paths cross, causing an explosive reaction."
What do you do when you want something sooooooo bad yet that thing you want is a man, a man who is dating your best friend?
After moving to California and settling into school with friends that aren't really her style, but a friend is a friend hey! What surprises you more is how close you become to some. CJ is so different to the other girls she is friends with.
CJ has had a crush on Tanner since the moment she laid eyes on him, those aqua blue eyes drawing her in, Tanner is perfection. The one thing she wasn't expecting was for her best friend to end up beating her to him. They are everywhere she goes, she just can't seem to escape them, their romance was being thrown in her face. While still being a private person with her friends she did have one escape that none of of her friends knew about, dancing.
When CJ needs her escape she heads to the gym to dance it out, what she wasn't expecting was for someone to catch her. Not just anyone either, Kyrone. He's always been a douche and a player but the guy is hot, and he knows it, he's cocky, my (Kristy) type of guy. BUT he's always had a bit of lust for CJ. When he sees her dancing he wants her even more, sure the dancing is sexy but it's her personality, she's so different to all the other girls that throw themselves at him. Surely just a one night thing get burn some energy and get it out of there system.
Hmmm that doesn't go too well, since CJ has gotten under Kyrone’s skin, he wants more and CJ isn't opposed to having more, he's started to grow on her she's letting someone slowly in. Of course this happens right when she and Tanner have a moment, a moment when he confesses his feelings for her.
What's a girl to do? Go for the guy she's always had a crush on even though he's dating her best friend? Or take things slow and see where it goes with the once cocky yet sexy as sin Kyrone?
When a job opportunity comes up and she moves away with her friend, life is hectic and before she knows it a year has gone by and so much has happened. While CJ is busy with her career, Hillary, her room mate, is dating Tick and they are now on their way back to Texas for a friends wedding.
Heading back to Texas is going to put her face to face with the two delicious football players she left behind. Seeing Tanner again is not what she expected, seeing Kyrone again again isn't what she expected either and her feelings for one of them has taken her by surprise.
Our thoughts
Kristy - I LOVED Kyrone right from the very beginning and told TL Smith that, he is mine lol. I love hot sexy, cocky males who love to have banter with a girl, I love the story lines when the chick gives it back just as much if not more. That is just one of the reasons I loved this book.
Kayla - I adored CJ’s character. We know from TL’s previous books that all her females are strong and have sass and that's exactly what CJ brought to this book. She held her own against the cockyness of Kyrone and she didn’t let the struggles she faced in life deter her from getting what she wanted, she just needed to work through it all. This book was so relatable, and faced many struggles people face. I hope TL keeps writing these books, with men that we always seem to fall in love with.
This book was given to me by the author for an honest review. I give it a resounding 5 stars! TL Smith is one of my favorite authors! This book is no exception to her fabulous work by the way. I don't even need to read the synopsis of her books to one click any of them! Once I started reading this book i couldn't put it down! Kyrone and CJ's love story wasn't easy or short by any means, but it was wonderful. They met in college and she had a thing for his best friend who was dating her friend. Then when they started sleeping together Tanner, said friend she was crushing on, made a move on her. At that point it was to late and she was already falling for Kyrone. Then she moves to New York and he goes on to play football. Will they end up together at the end? Guess you'll have to read the story to find out ;-)
Antagonize Me is the second book from T.L. Smith that I have read. I love the style and the pace the author sets. This story moves along quickly, but without being rushed or missing a beat. Interesting plot, great characters, and a happily ever after that I hoped for while reading this journey.
I really enjoyed CJ. She is not your typical romance novel kind of character. She’s quick witted, sassy and doesn’t follow the script of a love starved college girl. She desperately wants Tanner, who is actually one of her best friends, but he’s taken. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make the attraction to him disappear.
Kyrone is exactly what you would image a college aged football player to be. He’s got only one thing on his mind and once he gets it, it’s time to move on to the next luck gal. CJ can’t stand him and does everything she can to avoid him. She soon discovers that when Kyrone wants something, he doesn’t give up.
These two characters are such an odd pairing, but it works. The batter between them is hysterical at times. He’s straight forward and she throws it right back. I was rooting for them to make it work right from the beginning.
I recommend this standalone for a quick paced and easy read. It’s full of silly moments, heart breaking moments, and moments of confliction. I promise you will enjoy it!
I almost didn't read this whole book and there were parts where I questioned why I was reading it. BUT for some reason the good parts were good and it sucked me in.
1- It is painfully obvious that the author is not from America. I was guessing British so it was not surprising when I found out she is from Australia. Between the mannerisms and slightly different dialogue I actually thought the main character might also be from England or something initially. I kept having to reread to make sure I was in the correct setting in my mind.
2- Lots of colorful ways of describing the female anatomy-a tad bit unnecessary.
3- I did enjoy that the characters did seem to grow up (Hillary was slightly annoying in College)
4- I liked that CJ did not end up with Tanner. I'm glad she turned him away when he had a gf.
5- There were quite a few grammar errors. But those were not as distracting as the Australian vs American differences.
6- CJ and Kyrone although cute at times, seemed to base their relationship solely on sex...I mean you could see them begin to fall in love but man, every conversation they had involved sex in some way.
Oh I do love a nice YA/NA story and this one had certainly caught my attention right from the start. The characters were both endearing and loveable and the story heartfelt.
CJ is a beautiful but feisty girl who innocently thinks her life revolves around the one boy she can't have, her best friend's boyfriend, Tanner. CJ and Tanner have been friends for years but it's not until her friend starts dating him that she realises that what she wants above all else is Tanner. Trying not to spend time in their company, CJ uses her love of dance as an escape mechanism but what she doesn’t expect to find in her release is Kyrone, Tanner's team mate and captain of the football team. Gorgeous but arrogant, he is CJ's biggest antagonist but slowly he ingratiates himself into her life and into her bed. Kyrone is cocky and dangerous but he sees something in CJ and that is something he wants, badly.
From the moment they first come together, CJ and Kyrone's lives become a twisted and complicated mess and this is where the story took a nosedive for me. I was expecting a love triangle but it never really developed. Instead, CJ became a slightly irritating and indecisive person and despite knowing her feelings for Kyrone were developing she kept pushing him away only to be offended when he was with someone else. Putting it simply, there was just too much angst and it detracted from the story. There was also unnecessary sensationalism in an attempt to give the story more spirit in my opinion. It quickly became a story which was difficult to read and enjoy but at the same time, I needed to reach the ending to see if CJ and Kyrone got their HEA.
I guess this book will suit those readers who love their books full of angst, drama and emotion. For me, the story lost its continuity and felt slightly rushed at times but despite this I was glad I saw it through to its conclusion.
I have to start by saying that T.L. Smith I flipping adore you and your writing. Here's to another 5 star read!!
Kyrone is this hot ass sexy guy that will and does get any girl he wants but he never sleeps with them twice. This man knows what he wants and he eventually always gets what he wants. He is more than just a hot sexy body, he is kind, loving, gentle, and so much more...But you have to be pretty damn special to be able to see that side of him. Christina is this beautiful creature that is so not like all the other girls. She will go to a party with skinny jeans and a tee shirt on, where most girls try too hard with short skirts and heels. She is what some would call different and weird. I call her brilliant and amazing. This character is now one of my favorites... Now trust me I want to go into detail and tell you this entire story because it is so damn good. This book is full of love, lust, secrets, and heart-break. I will not lie there is a particular part of this book where I had to put it down and wipe my eyes and take a deep breath. The writing that T.L. Smith gives you will rip through your skin and she will allow you to feel these characters emotions as they are feeling them. I for one am so in love with this story. If I had it my way I would rip Kyrone right out of this book and make him be real. I liked him in the beginning and then once I got to the ending I feel head over heels for this character. He is the perfect man...yes rough around the edges, cocky, a pain in the ass, but one of a kind. The best part of this book is this... "Shoot for the stars, he would say to me. Dream as big as the ocean, you can do anything you want, anything. Just imagine you can and your possibilities are endless. So that's what I am going to do, dream as big as the ocean, imagine like the sky above. No one can stop me." Once I got to the end of the book I realized that this was more than words on my kindle. This story...these characters are inspiration. I know that in our life’s we end up taking different paths most of the time they are not the original ones we dreamed of but that is what makes us even stronger than we were before.....and then it all makes sense when the time is right. T. L. Smith bravo with this book. You have my brain running circles and now at the age of 32, you have me dreaming bigger and better things and you now have me wanting to color my hair blue ;)

What happens when your crush, the one person you want to be with is with someone else? And what happens if that someone else that’s with your crush is your friend?
This is what CJ has to deal with each and every single day.
You see her feelings for Tanner are intense. CJ wants it to be her that he holds, touches, hugs and kisses, not Katrina.
But CJ knows it will never happen. Because Tanner’s heart belongs to Katrina.
Seeing them everyday at school is heartbreaking, but they are inseparable. So the only thing CJ can do is suck it up and just get on with her life. And the one way she copes……
Dancing.
It’s her escape. Her way to block it all out. A way for her to be free of the hurt and anguish caused by seeing them together.
But one thing CJ never counted on….
Kyrone.
Kyrone. Sexy as sin with a dirty mouth. He’s a womaniser. A player. One night stands are definitely his thing. Love and attachment is something that Kyrone will never do.
Or will he?
A one-nighter shared between CJ and Kyrone will change everything.
Will CJ and Kyrone ever be anything other than f#@k buddies? The chemistry is there. The desire is there. They crave each other.
But can both CJ and Kyrone ever allow their guards down? Will they ever open their hearts? Will CJ ever be able to let go of her feelings for Tanner? Can Kyrone allow CJ in?
You are simply going to have to read Antagonize Me to find out.
This novel is nothing short of brilliant. From beginning to end we couldn’t put it down.
It’s fun, sassy, light hearted and at times comical. The banter between the characters was simply brilliant. And some of the one liners…..Prepare yourself for the laugh of your life.
It’s also sad and heartbreaking. We could feel the anguish and the hurt. We could feel the pain. It has so many emotions that we were either laughing our asses off or crying our eyes out.
And the sex…..It’s of the charts….It’s damn hot!!
All in all definite must read.
To TL. Thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to read Antagonize Me. It’s one of our best reads to date.
Antagonize Me should be an absolute must on everyone’s TBR list.
A Sexy, funny, sweet, romance This book is fast paced, and keeps your attention throughout. This is my first read by this author and I really enjoyed it. This story is about CJ, she is smart, sassy, beautiful, she has a great sense of humor, and secretly loves to dance. Unfortunately for her she also has the hots for the one guy she can't have. That would be Tanner, and in her eyes he is perfection, the moment she lays eyes in him, he is hot, with hypnotizing blue eyes, is an I'm shape football player and is an all around good guy. So go for it right? Wrong! Her best friend makes the play before she can, and she can't go there after that can she? As if it's not bad enough that she doesn't get the guy, she has to watch her bestie with said guy. Then she meets Kyrone, who is annoying, full of himself, snarky, always out to get laid, also a football player and also Tanner's teammate and friend. Still there is something there with CJ and Kyrone. CJ ends up in a situation where she has to sort out how she feels about both guys. There is so much more to the story, it is so worth the read. It is so well written, the characters are real, and emotions run high in this book. I found myself caring so much about these characters. I laughed, I shed tears, I was really pulled into the story. I great read. I was given a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of the book isn't new at all, and honestly, there are books that do it faaarrr better. The writing, I'm sorry to say, was simply AWFUL. Everything was waaayyy too rushed. Instead of the book being paced well and there being detail and an actual storyline, everything is thrown in right off the bat. So the main character, I don't even know what the hell her name is, Christina maybe? Anyway, she goes to a party and danced like a stripper, and everyone goes crazy because she can dance soooo well. Then she wakes up in Kyrone's room, runs away, sees Tanner her bff who she's in love with, then leaves. Same thing happens in next chapter except this time Kyrone strips and then him and Christina have sex. This literally happens in like ten minutes. Then the next day they go at it again and Tanner kisses Christina even tho he has a girlfriend who loves him. Christina pushes him away and says she likes Kyrone. This happens in like TWO chapters!!! The plot for the entire book was smushed up into these chapters, meaning the writing was bad, there was zero description, and there's no depth in anything. If that description of the book sounded awful, confusing, and just plain stupid, then you have noooooo idea what the book is like. I just made it sound good. I mean HONESTLY, I don't understand all the reviews!!!!!! I did NOT finish this one. Absolutely not.
I liked this story. I would have rated it higher but I also had a lot of issues with it. It was mostly about timelines and other continuity issues. Like one part of the story the heroine states she is taking finals and it seems like she may be graduating soon or if not just leaving to go work, but it also is the last game of the football season. Football ends in like January so I don't see how they could be taking finals. Also they seems to just go from NY to LA or TX like that is an hour flight. Another part had them in Texas and then in living in Los Angeles. I was getting confused. And another part that's a bit of a spoiler but one character was hurt really badly and went back to a physically demanding job. I just doesn't see that as realistic. But the heart of the story was really about CJ and Kyrone. I really liked them together even though they were content with the friends with benefits relationship and CJ really had her sights set on her friend Tanner. If you can get past the issues this was a really good story for me.
Antagonize Me is another instant 5 star hit by T. L Smith. Antagonize Me is so different from T.L’s other books but it is easily just as great, her ability to write such different storylines shows her talent as an author. Have you ever wanted something you couldn’t have? I think we all have and that idea is what made this book so easy to relate to. The characters were well developed and likeable. I totally emersed myself in the world of Kyrone and CJ. Kyrone and CJ's love story wasn’t simple there was some conflict there were some things that had to be worked out and those elements only helped to make the story great. I need a story that has a HEA and this did not fail. I don’t want to give away any spoilers so I will just say that this is totally worth reading, you will be glad that you did.
TL Smith's Antagonize Me was a quick, but awesome read. Funny, serious and yet poignant in parts, I loved the way this book moved me from laughter to tears.
TL's female lead characters never cease to amaze me with their strength and resolve, and Christina or CJ as she is known to her friends is no different. She has a crush on her friend Tanner, but he is with her girlfriend Katrina and this proves to be a bit of an issue for CJ, but like all crushes they are soon replaced with something much more solid and grounding.
CJ meets the irrepressible Kyrone, athlete extraordinaire and downright ladies man, or so he thinks. Does CJ tame the ladies man Kyrone? Well you will have to read to find out.
TL, you have dished up another fantastic book, loved it and worth of the five star rating I am giving it.
I gonna dive right into this story. Kyrone, Was hot, sexy, funny, sweet, and all alpha! This story is about having a crush on one of your ver am y good friends and how that friend doesn't return those feelings into its to late I really love T.L. writing style it's so refreshing and how strong she makes her female leads. Now let's talk about CJ she was pretty, smart, refreshing her character is one I really enjoyed reading about and how she was conflicted about her feelings for the two men in her life. But also the emotional, ride she has to go on throughout this book did I say how amazing T.L. Smith, writing was because this book will definitely leave you in a hangover for days. I am dying to know more about the secondary characters. **I received an ARC in exchange for A honest review.**
Let me start by saying this book is so MUCH better then the blurb. Ok. I love TL Smith and her blurbs are amazing... but they're semi misleading. I didn't walk away from this book thinking it matched the blurb. That being said, OMFG HFSB this book was good.
CJ is not your typical innocent little heroine. She's a tough chick who speaks her mind. She is in love with her friends boyfriend Tanner, but Tanner's friend Kyrone is chasing her for some NSA sex. And he gets more then he bargained for.
I can't really summarize it past that. TL Smith does a beautiful job at weaving a deep intricate story that twists so elegantly into heartbreak you don't even see it coming. TL Smith is my one click no matter what author and she does not disappoint with this book. This is a must read!!!
I had a hard time with this one, parts of the story seemed glossed over and the relationships seemed rushed and half-assed. CJ and Kyrone were almost immature in the beginning of their relationship (i.e. “ding dong in my wing wong” and his constant reference to his “12’ pole”). The attempt at a love-triangle between Tanner and CJ was laughable. Then later, it was one drama after another and left me more depressed than happy. I liked the idea of the storyline but it just fell flat in my opinion.
I really liked the 'idea" of this book I liked the Chemistry between CJ and Kyrone. I did feel the story was rushed and if she expanded on it would have been a brilliant read .. there is too many big gaps in the story for my liking I am left feeling wanting more and wondering what happened in between the years.. I think this could have been a full length book or even a 2 Part Series ..
This book is fabulous. It is well written. CJ is my favorite character. Kyrone wore her down. Kyrone is funny and loving to Christina. This book keeps you wanting to know what will happen next. CJ has been through a lot of loss in her life. I hope T. L. Writes more about CJ and Kyrone. You will love this couple.
Kyron Kyron.....perfect book boyfriend. What can I say I really enjoyed it. Love in all the wrong places. Best kind of love right? I loved CJs character as well. Independent and realistic. But Kyron was my most fav can you tell....I love the way he just takes what he wants.
CJ isn't looking to settle down. What she wants is the one she can't have. Then here come annoying Kyrone and he takes CJ to a level she never thought she could be on. Can the one person that gets on your nerves be your future? Will Kyrone be enough to make CJ forget about Tanner?
The book was okay......But it kind of rushed along skipping so many information..but later on filling in the pieces in a rather Not So Good Way....An okay try from this author.....the plot was awesome....A few errors here and there but you get the drift of things.......It is a must read...
I was really enjoying this book. Seeing C.J. going for what she wanted. Although she did let friend date the guy she had a crush on instead of letting her feelings known. When Kyrone sees her dancing he starts showing up whenever she disappears to dance. I did like Kyrone and he didn't hesitate to put the moves on C.J. I was a little confused since all she thought about was Tanner but then she ends up sleeping with Kyrone. Now he goes off to play professional ball and she moves to N.Y. A year goes by before they see each other again. Hook up and then go their separate ways. Another 2 yrs go by before she sees him again after the death of her grandfather. Hook up again even though he has a girlfriend now. It takes a while for them to get back together but when he is in an accident the stress gets to her and she loses their child. I was disappointed in the author for going this route. C.J. was a very strong independent woman and at this point she turns in to a whole different person. Leaves Kyrone in the hospital, starts drinking then tries to kill herself. Just seem so out of character for her. I did enjoy the epilogue.
Ok.. where do I start??? I loved this one... it is out of the box for the author and I think that is what I loved the most. The leading lady, CJ, is snarky and sassy and comes up with some one liners that literally had me laughing out loud. Im not sure where TL came up with some of the one liners in this one, but they were perfect.
Antagonize me is not my "normal read". However, Iam glad I read it. It was a refreshing change of pace for me. And I read it in one sitting. I wanted to know what was going to happen, and since I was actually down and out with pneumonia at the time, I was actually kinda of glad because I was able to devour the story and not have to worry about those pesky life things like work and kids.
Antagonize me is a bit of a love triangle. And yet it isnt a love triangle. I know..weird and mysterious, but if you follow my reviews you know that is how I roll. I try not to give anything away because I hate taking away from the experience the reader gets when they have no idea what is coming.
I absolutely loved Kyrone. He was snarky and cocky and arrogant. Just the way I like my book boyfriends. I loved that he didnt take CJ's crap. I loved that he would go up against her, and the banter between the 2 of them was hilarious. Although they didnt seem like a "fit" they ended up being a perfect match. They just got each other.
The characters were loveable and relateable. And honestly, even though the author has this as a stand alone, I am secretly hoping we will end up with the stories of some of the side characters. And again, I am not going to say who because it will give too much away.
Another thing I really liked about this was that it didnt end up going where I thought it was going to go. It kept throwing me curve balls which kept me on my toes and I love that in a book.
Antagonize me is a good blend of comedy and angst. And truthfully, the only reason I didnt feel like I could 5 star this one is because Iam not a huge angst fan. And for me there was just a touch to much. I hope that makes sense. There wasnt so much angst and drama that I didnt want to finish and I didnt not find myself skimming to get thru it. Iam just not a huge fan of a long build up and I did find myself thinking "come on people--just get on with it." I know a good majority of people will think Iam off my rocker, and that is ok. Because we all know I walk to the beat of my own drummer. And one of the best things about books is that there is something for everyone and we all like different things.
Now, with that being said. If you are like me and you dont like a bunch of angst, still give this one a go. Like I said, it wasnt to the point you want to reach in and slap a character or 2. And it didnt drag to the point of no return. I do think it was blended well with the comedy factor. I just always want things to move along at my pace.
And get ready, because the ending?? Not what you are thinking at all.... comes out of nowhere. I literally picked my jaw off the floor. Because I did not see it coming!!!! And what a way to end the book!!! But dont worry, it is not a cliff hanger. Everything is wrapped up tight. It was just wrapped up way different than I thought it would be!!
*Does the hope dance with fingers crossed* --- Lets hope we see some more of this kind of comedy from the author... because we all need to be able to have a good laugh... and laugh you will do!!!!
**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.**
Antagonize me, might be one of the worst books I've ever read.
The story (when a plot line is actually taking place) is sped through and rushed to the point it would make your head spin. The character relationships are so glossed over that it really makes no sense, and you're left not giving a damn about any of what is happening. Dialogue set up appears out of no where with characters asking questions so far out of left field, it felt like a badly written fan fiction and not a professionally edited book.
The most annoying thing about this book is by far the characters though. I have never disliked this many characters in one book ever!
The main character is frankly a bitch and the attempt to make readers like her is dismal at best. It makes me think the author has a lot of pent up misogyny because literally there is not a single girl in this book that the main character doesn't bad mouth in some way. She also seems to think she is a special snowflake because she has dyed hair and wears slogan t-shirts, which some how makes her a cut above the rest. Any girl who doesn't measure up to her "alternative self" is bad mouthed, either out rightly or backhandedly. The constant referring to other women as "fucking crazy" or "psycho" from both the main character and other characters was actually disgusting and unneeded. CJ literally bad mouths a girl who isn't overly thrilled to meet her after her boyfriend ran off to spend time with CJ, which leads to Kyrone talking bad about this girl again later. Kyrone even suggests punching this same girlfriend as he is annoyed she wasn't nice to CJ. Sorry what?
Slut, whore, etc are constantly thrown around by both the male and female characters, along with the referring to women as bitches.
Kyrone has frankly a creep. From shoving his penis in CJ's face for no reason at all, to constantly molesting her, and admittedly carrying her around everywhere so she "doesn't run away" - he is not likable in any which way. In fact he scream desperate rapist. His jealously over any man who even breathes near CJ is over the top and his relationship with Tanner is so mind boggling, you have a heard time figuring out how they were ever friends.
Between the constant bashing and utter disrespect of girls, and the authors frantic scrambling to make any women who isn't CJ "desperate" and "easy" (Katrina being made out to be overly clingy, Natalia resorting to messy oral to make Kyrone stay, being excellent examples), and the sea of grammatical errors and bad wording in this book (Zingers such as "I screamed silently into his shirt" and "Her jaw dropped, reopened and dropped again"...What?), I would suggest not touching it with a "ten foot pole". Yep, I can make puns too.
How this book got the ratings it did to begin with is beyond me.
I enjoyed reading this book. The angst the back and forth was just the right amount of crazy for me to not be able to put down. CJ was complex. I felt for her that she had feelings for Tanner and her friend dismissed them and now she suffered silently. I was shocked that she was ok with the whole casual sex thing I wasn't really expecting that from her. Of course we all know that never works that way anyhow BUT at the time although it was super hot and gladly accepted I had been shocked. As much as I liked Tanner he pissed me off by not being able to stand up for what he wanted and in a relationship that was just ok to him. Ky was awesome !! He was blunt and funny and just the typical college guy you want as a friend and of course would never say no to because let's face it he is hot !! You could tell right away that CJ was NOT going to be a typical chick for Ky. The way he paid attention to her and the way he was always there , you knew he was feeling something and not knowing what to do with that. CJ was waiting on an opportunity to go to New York and fulfill her dream. Her grandad was her only family and with his belief in her and his help once she got the job she was able to move on from Texas. I wasn't happy with how she left and anyone who knows me or reads my reviews knows I hate the dreaded lapse in time , a year later , 2 years later etc etc. It was a little shocking to see how little CJ actually kept in touch with these so called friends. I would have thought she would have made more of an effort. Besides living with Hillary and spending time with Tick she honestly had no clue what anyone else was doing back in Texas. Thankfully for her these friends still loved and adored her and there were more than a couple times she really needed them and they came running. The book takes a way more serious tone towards the end and it was on the edge of your seat kind of stuff. I was horrified and so glad to see it turn out differently than it could have.
“We can’t always have what we want, and sometimes that’s the way life is meant to be. Sometimes destiny places other people in our path, a path that should not be mixed. But also sometimes, just sometimes, the paths cross, causing an explosive reaction.”
This was my first read from T.L. and it will not be my last. Her writing style is honest and direct. Relationships are not all flowers and teddy bears, and T.L. showed us this with Antagonize Me. She takes us into the struggles that come with relationships, and with life in general.
“My smile is forced now, trying to hide the pieces of my heart that have shattered with his gift. It’s nothing special to anyone else, but to us, we'll, it was our beginning.”
CJ is a relatable character. She’s real and doesn’t take shit from anyone. She's not afraid to be herself, and she also sees people for who they are. The demons that CJ deals with opens your heart up for her. Then there is Kyrone! Kyrone, Kyrone, Kyrone...The ultimate bad boy that will do bad things to you...oh yes please! He has a smart mouth, hot bod, and some surprises behind his tough guy exterior. When these two strong characters connect, watch out! You will not be able to put Antagonize Me down.
“I think I should not break him any more than this will. He doesn’t need to love someone with holes in them. Everyone I love, something goes wrong, or someone dies, or someone leaves. He deserves better, so much better than me.”
I love the honest approach that T.L. took when she wrote Antagonize Me. I find that her words are very touching and truthful, and she doesn’t shy away from writing about serious situations. I look forward to reading more books from T.L. Smith!!
*** Gifted in exchange for my honest review, as part of the release tour ***
This book has a different feel to it from Ms Smith's other series, Krinos is dark and delishiously escapism, This book has a more reality based feel to it, similar to the Dilemma series, which I love, but the characters have a much younger feel to them.
I like that its broken into parts, and the alternate POVs give you a greater understanding of both CJ and Tyrone.
It is a fast paced story-line and CJ is a strong character, she has plans and she intends to make them happen, and not let love stand in her way.
Tyrone - what can I say, he first appears to be a typical 'Jock' with a different girl hanging off him each night, and Tyrone one thing on his mind (12 inches if he is to believed!!) but he has seen something in CJ that he wants.
They play a cat and mouse game to start with and eventually they hook up because they make sparks when they get together.
"We can’t always have what we want, and sometimes that’s the way life is meant to be."
I am not going to give you a blow by blow account of the book, I will just say that as the book progresses it not just a college romance book, but takes you through the years as CJ and Tyrone go out and find their way in the world.
As Ms Smith is quite adept at doing, she will pull your heart strings like a skilled conductor at a symphony.
I cried, I laughed and I hoped that the pair would find a time when their paths would align and it would finally be their turn for happiness.
Quirky with depth and so very different from my last TL Smith read.
CJ is a college student that is in love with Tanner but he is dating her friend. The friend who has everything she wants, in a way. CJ is an outside the box kind of girl. She is feisty and speaks her mind. She tends to be a bit of loner and beats to her own drum. No one has her heart as she hasn't quite found her place in life yet. That is where Kyrone's proposal for just sex becomes appealing. Kyrone finds CJ a challenge, she is not like the other girls and that makes him want more than just one night with her. He is an entertaining character and every possible ridiculous line he can think of.
Over the next number of years CJ finds her place but is riddle with heartbreak. When she is at her worst, she finds Kyrone again and again. He pops in for "just sex" and often a few laughs. Their journey is an interesting one. It is filled with disasters and happiness. Do opposites have the ability to more than just attract each other? Or will old friendship and love be the answer to a happily ever after? Is there really a happily ever after for this band of college friends?
This book was an enjoyable standalone. I rolled my eyes, giggled and had my heart broken. There were some points where I thought time moved too quickly and I got a little bit lost. Some other things didn't make sense or I was unsure about their significance (if any). The book did flow well and was easy to get into. Each character had their own place in the story and they were all interesting. This was a light entertaining read and one that is worth checking out.
