My mom let me read this book when I sick at home with chicken pox. Needless to say, it put my misery in perspective ;-) Seriously though, even if I read this book AGES ago (I was thirteen at the time), its remains one of the most warm, touching, and haunting stories I have ever read.

THIS IS A BOOK I READ WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. IT TEACHES ALOT OF LESSONS OF LIFE AND LIVING. IT ALSO SHOWS THAT WE REALLY DON'T KNOW OURSELVES AS FAR AS WHAT NATURE INSTILLED IN US AND WHAT IS IN OUR HEARTS. THIS MADE A GREAT IMPRESSION ON ME AND STAYS WITH ME EVEN UNTIL TODAY.

This novel was required reading for my 9th grade English class and I fell in LOVE with the story of a veteran discovering his sickness years after being back in his regular life for years. It is emotional, a slightly "slow" read, but worth every word. I reread it last year, 15 years after my freshman year and can honestly say that this is one of the most moving stories I've ever read.

It's not a blockbuster book, but it should be.

The original of this story was the first book I ever read. That book, as well as this one, have had a profound effect on me. It is beautifully written and enlightens the reader as to what is happening with this disease and the ramifications, both personally and scientifically. Thank you.

A biography of a young man's life during WWI and afterwards when he contracted leprosy, living on Culion Island for 25 years in the Philippines and how he was able to inspire and implement changes to help the people have jobs and maintain a sense of worth. Recommended reading.

I read this book the first time while I was in High School and it still remains my favorite book of all time. Poignant, terrifying, hard to put down. I’ve re-read several times.

Good book! Enjoyed it. It is the story of Ned Langford who was in the Spanish American war. After 9 years back in the USA, leprosy rears its ugly head and he returns to a leprosarium in the Phillipenes. Ned was a real person and the story of his life is very real.

I forget how I found this gem of a book, but it was such a real and touching tale, about a part of history I had not previously known, and a life that seemed very far from my own. The book covers a range of categories including history, medicine, and sociology. The main character, Ned Langford, has what is commonly known as leprosy, and yet the life he manages to regain is described in such a way that I, believe it or not, marvel and envy at such happiness. I think this book so worthwhile to seek out, from used bookstores and the like.

Now out of print, it is a non-fiction story of Ned who was afflicted with a then fatal and stigmatized disease - Leprosy. Faking his death so that his family would be spared of the agony of dealing with him, he spends the rest of his life in Manila, Philipines, in a fort where all lepers are tended to - a fort known as The Sanctuary of Sorrow because of its afflicted members. Philippines had been struck with this deadly disease since the last 300 years, not too far back in history.

Ned encounters a love affair with a local woman, doomed to fail. A sorrowful story of a painful life, a doomed love and a failed hope of ever recovering.

Truly unbelievable story about a veteran who finds he has returned home with leprosy and fakes his death so that his family and fiancee don't have to deal with the pain of knowing he will be sent to a leper colony in the Phillipines, never to see them again. Amazing resilience and optimism in the face of wrenching and unimaginable circumstances.

I remember reading this when I was a kid and it made a lasting impression on me. The images that grew before my eyes are still with me and it sure is a touching and memorable book which will make you think. I found my old copy on the shelf while cleaning and I had to put it here :) If I remember correctly, this must be the first book that genuinely made me cry from compassion.

Book was kinda interesting. This man gets leprosy and fakes his death so his family doesnt try to contact him and get the disease. He moves to a leprosy colony and only comes back to the states right before he dies. Mainly about his life in the colony.
