If you want something simple and overall easy, this just might fit the bill.

Like the blurb says, when Will meets Joshua, he’s pleasantly surprised to realize that though Joshua isn’t his typical type, the big guy definitely hits many many buttons. What ensues is a nice progression as these two meet cute, start to date, and navigate their feelings for one another.

I like Bethke for the most part, but I realized with this story that for sure, her first person narratives just don’t click with me, unlike Hearts and Hazelnuts and her Requiem Inc. series which are in 3rd person and my faves of hers. Here, there’s too much tell and not enough show, and there was hope for some food porn and cafe bakery goodness all tied up in a fall holiday vibe…. not so.

However, don’t be disheartened. This was still enjoyable, having the bonus of a gentle giant and the fact that Bethke never skimps on the smexy!

Pumpkin Rolls and Porn Sounds is a short, sweet, simple, and slightly steamy opposites-attract M/M romance.

It is easy reading... but it didn’t do much for me, if I’m being honest.

My reactions here were much like those I had when reading Bethke’s Christmas story His Needs. I won’t bore you with the details, I’ll simply say, once again, I felt a personal disconnect to the writing and the characters. It may very well be a simple case of incompatibility between reader and writer, and that’s totally okay. We can’t win them all, nor should we.

I guess my main issue with this particular tale revolved around the focus on physical appearance. I felt Will came across as unappealingly vain (from page one), regularly appearing self-obsessed with his own image, while Joshua was at the other end of the spectrum, proving his own insecurities and worries about his own image with his constant and repetitive need for Will to explain why he was even with Joshua, even though Will had done nothing but prove his interest and attraction time and time again.

Both of these character attitudes were a bit of a turn off for me. In particular, I could have at least done with a better understanding of why Joshua felt the way he felt, but the reasons behind his insecurities were brushed aside with a simple “I’ve had bad experiences in the past” type-comment.

As other reviews can attest, this reaction may just be a ‘me’ thing, so don’t take me too seriously if this sounds like something that will work for you.

Will Grant wasn’t expecting anything, really, when his mother guilted him into attending one of her PFLAG meetings. But he takes one look at the speaker they have that night and he is smitten. Which is odd, since Joshua is not really his type. But there is something about the man than intrigues Will. And Will has every intention of getting closer to Joshua, even if he has to eat every pumpkin roll in Joshua’s cafe to do it (that is a sacrifice he is more than willing to take!).

I’m feeling kinda bad right now, because I skipped one of my PFLAG meetings in order to stay home and read this. Turns out writing a story is a time-consuming business and it cuts severely into my free reading time. But I don’t think I could function without reading something and I am really glad that the something I read tonight was this.

It’s so fluffy!

This was only 50 or so pages, but it was a sweet 50 pages. There is not a lot of conflict (other than a few minor issues) and absolutely no angst. It was as sweet and lovely as one of those pumpkin rolls sounded like. God, I could murder a pumpkin roll right now.

This was a very quick read and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Both of the characters were interesting, and I loved that Will found himself falling for someone he never expected to fancy. Sometimes Joshua is a bit unsure why Will wants him, and honestly, Will doesn’t have an answer for why he found Joshua initially attractive, but it doesn’t matter why. He just does. And he is perfectly fine showing just how attracted to Joshua he is. Over and over and over. Just to thorough, you know. ;)

Very good story and I’d love to see more of these two, if the author ever wants to indulge me. A perfect light snack of a book. Though I will say, maybe have a few snacks around before you start reading, because I am famished and in serious need of pumpkin delicacies (that are, sadly, in very short supply around here).

First of all, I needed to address something that made me happy of this story. The supportive parents. Yep. I read many contemporary MM romance and I think my heart has slowly turned to stone whenever I have to read parents being homophobic and throw out their LGBT children. While it is a real life issue we still often encounter, but it has been too much of occurrence in MM romance stories, I think I’ve become immune and have lost my sympathetic card.

In this story Will’s parents started and ran the local PFLAG chapter and then later on Joshua told everybody about his own father who “might not understand him but still loves his son no matter what”. It just warmed my heart. There are parents like these too, wonderful and loving parents who will stand behind their homosexual children and protect them from harm. Why don’t we put spotlight on them as well? Just to keep our hope that things will get better. So thank you for this, Kris T. Bethke!

Anyway, the story itself is pretty cute. Solely written from Will’s perspective I enjoyed reading how he started to fall for Joshua, whom Will described as “absolutely wasn’t the type of guy who normally turned my head”. Joshua is beefy with facial hairs and taller than Will – while Will admits that he likes men who looks more like him (those who embraces all stereotypes). Oh, and Joshua had this Third Date rule in which he won’t have sexual intercourse before they both have third date. Reading how it rattled Will was amusing. I definitely loved how his friends and family knew about how much Will was expecting to finally getting laid!

I did found Joshua’s lack of self-esteem in terms of his physique to be baffling though – since he had his own admirers (in parents and others). I guess it was because Bethke never really described why Joshua was uncomfortable in his own skin. Did Joshua have a history with previous lovers who mocked him about how he looked? I mean, I kept waiting for Joshua to explain about his past, of his uncompromising stance of the Third Date rule, but it never happened.

Overall, it was a delightful story with lack of drama. It might be a good read in between heavier and more emotional stories.

Most people have a type of person they are attracted to. In quite a few cases, those types, for one reason or another, never seem to work out for the longer run. Sometimes the types we do not expect to be interested in, the people who don’t seem exciting or fascinating at first glance, are exactly the ones who are right for us.

This was a short, cute, feel-good read, not much drama or conflict - perhaps that was missing for me to give it 5 stars.

4 stars for sheer cuteness!!

This was a super fluffy, super sweet, super fun little novella, and just what I needed.

Will Grant, gay, a bit of a twink, shorter than most at 5'6" or so, is attending a local PFLAG group meeting where he is introduced to Joshua Rhinehardt, who's giving a speech at the meeting. Tall, hairy, meaty, Joshua is someone Will would not usually look at twice.

But the voice, OMG. Will is intrigued, can't get Joshua out of his mind, and ends up at Joshua's bakery to taste the famous Pumpkin rolls. Which is where the porny sounds come in.

The two seem entirely mismatched, but love is love, and I fell for them both as the story progressed. Will, from whose 1st person POV the book is written, knows exactly what he wants. Joshua wants Will too, but seems to think that his appearance is not what Will would call attractive.

Well... he's wrong.

I loved how the author allowed Will to recognize Joshua's fears, and how he was patient while Joshua figured things out. And also kind and supportive, open and honest. Will sort of knew he had to get Joshua to open up, to voice the fears, to talk about them honestly. To be assured of Will's feelings. Will also was quite self-aware, knew his assets and shortcomings. And he wasn't afraid to take a plunge.

Joshua, too, was a great character. He knew what he wanted, he was out and proud, but also didn't think much of himself. It appeared as if he'd been really hurt in the past, even though that wasn't mentioned. He was at once hot for Will but also in disbelief that someone like Will could want him. His insecurities kept him from believing in the relationship for a while, and toward the ending, it kind of bothered me a little bit that he would keep harping on that one thing, when everything else seemed to work for them both.

Then again, it perhaps helped Will to understand that words are just words, and actions speak louder.

One scene had me laughing out loud at Will's obliviousness, but it also served as a catalyst for the two men to have a heart to heart about their relationship.

There were some giggly moments in this novel, and some hot boyloving, and this book was the perfect antidote for the winter blahs. Well done, new-to-me author!

This one was both sweet and dirty. The kind, hardworking, dedicated MC with the self-confidence issues got a little irksome in parts, but I was ultimately left with a smile on my face.

Pumpkin Rolls and Porn Sounds is a short story about Will Grant and Joshua Rhinehardt, who is the owner of a pastry shop. This is told in first person, present tense, from Will’s pov.

Will Grant has the most supportive, if really too involved, family. When he came out, his parents started the local PFLAG chapter and they continue to run it. He is an only child and his mom is really good at guilting him into doing things. Such as attending a PFLAG meeting to hear a new speaker, Joshua. Will straight out says, Joshua isn’t his type. “… if I had passed him on the street I wouldn’t have given him a second look.”

Joshua owns a café, Pounds and Grounds, and he is very upfront about the fact that it was his father’s support that made him successful. A father who doesn’t understand “the gay” but loves his son and supports him. Joshua’s message was so powerful.

Will, who really comes across as flighty, dramatic and a little bit shallow, is enchanted by Joshua’s voice. As he flirts and tries to get Joshua’s attention, it’s cute and sweet. Made all the better by Joshua’s third date rule. I loved that.

This is a fairly short story (101 pages on iPad) and it’s pretty fluffy and angst free. The scene where Joshua tells Will about his conversation with Will’s dad? Awesome, because you get to see the growth Will has made. Well, after his diva fit, of course! It’s really cute and sweet!

What a wonderful delight this story is! Opposites attract. Will Grant was an outrageous, flamboyant and forward young man with lithe bod while Joshua was an older big hairy hunk of man who was rather conservative in term of dating style.

The story just flew charmingly from their first introduction to datings right to the end. I loved Will's parents and that Will took initiative to pursue the rather insecure big man. Also the rather old-fashioned courting - glad that Joshua insisted on third date rule, despite instant mutual attractions from their first meeting. An angst-free no drama with happy ending.

I can't help it, somehow I was a bit disappointed.
Perhaps it was simply too short for me but I couldn't connect with the characters or "feel" their love or why they were attracted to each other.
Nevertheless all in all it was a nice read just not exactly what I had hoped for after reading the blurb.

Super cute little story about being attracted to someone not your type and the insecurity that can come along with that kind of situation. Still a fun little read. I noticed though that the guy on the cover appears to be eating chicken, not the pumpkin roll sitting in front of him. ;-)

Summary:
This may be a relatively short story, but the characters and plot were well developed and thought out. It was inspiring how Will's parents support gave him the security and inner strength to be himself, something that is very important to all young people. I enjoyed how Will's mother guilted him into going to the PFLAG meeting just so he could meet Joshua, but no one ever expected the attraction that immediately between them. Can two such different people find common ground? People say that opposites attract, but it is difficult enough for people with similar backgrounds to get together let alone ones that are completely different. This was a very heartwarming and fun story to read.

I loved this story, I already read other titles by this author and always had a good time with them. Pumpkin Rolls and Porn Sounds is a very sweet and lovely short, Will and Joshua are two young men interesting, busy with their jobs, but ready to be supportive and active with PFLAG meetings. They meet and soon something strong seems to be born between them, but Joshua wants to take his time to know Will, especially since he’s not the exactly Will’s type.

I liked the pace of the story, the narration wasn’t rushed as often happens with titles short like this one. I fully enjoyed the amazing characters, their times together. I loved how both Will and Joshua felt real to me, with their dreams, but most of all with their insecurities and fault.

I feel to recommend this story by Kris T. Bethke, it’s easy and simple, a joy to read.

The cover art by lovely and fitting, I like it a lot

This is a super cute, super easy read that is well-written and full of great “feels”.

Will and Joshua meet at a PFLAG meeting and pretty much hit it off right from the start. Joshua is a little insecure and that causes them to move slowly at first, but it is absolutely the right thing for them.

The sex is very hawt. The love is frickin’ adorable. The MCs are really cute, too.

All in all a very full, though short, story with a big heart.

This is a really sweet romance with nice dating. Will is lovely as he finds himself attracted to Josh who is not his usual type. Josh is wonderful, a baker and a big beautiful man which is a kind of hero I love

Josh has self esteem issues around his looks. Will really finds his verve with Josh.

The story format doesn't allow the depth to deal with these topics I would have liked but it is a nice read with a very nice connections between the leads.

I didn't pay attention to the length of this book so it was shorter than I thought it would be. I liked it regardless but this was a story that skimmed the surface and got to point B rather fast. I wasn't sure at one point where the story was going to go once they got together but something a bit out of the blue (for me) popped up. This was a short, sweet read.
