Janice Maynard came to the writing life early! When her third grade short story, “The Princess and the Robbers”, won a red ribbon in a school arts fair, Janice was hooked. She followed up that early success with a more commercial piece in the sixth grade… “Why My Mom Loves To Drink Coke”. No advance for that one, but she won a six-pack of Coke… remember those great little bottles?
In junior high Janice began circulating her work to a wider audience. A dozen or so notebook pages stapled together made the rounds in some particularly boring classes, with the riveting tales carefully hidden behind textbooks.
High school meant the big time… editor of the school newspaper, the Maroon and White. Janice used her insightful editorials to delve into such meaty subjects as “locker room odor” and “why we need two-ply tissue in the student bathrooms”.
College brought lots of writing, but very little of it creative… four years later, Janice stepped into the adult world as a fully certified elementary teacher.
Despite motherhood, full-time employment, and keeping up with an “always into something” husband, Janice never lost her love of writing or the desire to be published. In 1996 she realized her long-time dream when Kensington Publishing bought her first book, Sweetheart. That exciting moment was followed by the sales of two more books in the Precious Gem line.
In the fall of 2002, Janice left the classroom to pursue writing full-time.
Up until the end, I think this was maybe 3 stars? And then....the ending. It almost seemed like the author got tired of writing this book, and just said "THE HELL WITH IT" and finished with the most abrupt, ridiculous wrap-up I've ever seen. The hero went from suffering from severe mental issues concerning childhood abuse/refusing to consider children in his future to "LET'S MAKE A BABY, HONEY!" in one paragraph.
That was not a very good book. The whole story takes place in less than 1 week, which does not leave room for character development, emotions growing or realism. The characters are a bit schematic and often behave irrationally or unrealistically. And there was too much sex, and furthermore unprotected sex, considering the length of the story. I did not buy their HEA.
Good book. Gillian is back on Wolff Mountain and staying with her mother while she looks for a new job. When her car goes off the road in the rain, she is rescued by Devlyn, who doesn't recognize her at first. When he does, the feelings of guilt over the way he treated her one time when they were children come rushing back. He also discovers he is very attracted to her. As a way to help her out while keeping her close, he hires her as a consultant for the school his family is building in the nearby town. Their attraction is intense, but both of them have some serious issues to overcome before they can be together. I really liked both Gillian and Devlyn. Gillian was very cautious about being around Devlyn. She knew that their attraction couldn't go anywhere. He is a rich playboy who dates some of the most beautiful women around. She is an ordinary looking third grade teacher whose mother is the Wolff's housekeeper. Those feelings aren't helped by her mother who keeps emphasizing those differences instead of telling her that she is good enough for anyone. Devlyn has never wanted to commit to anyone. He has some things in his past that make him certain that he would never be a good husband or father. When they split over his attitude, both are heartbroken, though he doesn't really understand why he feels the way he does. Gillian goes to him and finally gets the story of why he feels as he does and is able to show him how wrong he is to be worried. I loved the way she went after him and wouldn't let him chase her away.
After Devlyn rescues Gillian from a car accident, they both have a case of the hot pants for each other. Yeah, cuz car accidents will do that to you. However, they must resist their strong attraction to each other. Devlyn because he's a Harlequin man - he's got issues. Gillian because she's a Harlequin heroine - she doesn't think she's pretty enough for him. Thankfully all of their problems are easily overcome with a couple of bouts of adequate sex.
I love the Wolff books, a lot. This one was no exception. I fell in love with the heroine right away and drooled over the hero. There was a lot of points I didn't agree on and some I didn't like but overall the novel is well written and does keep you intrigued. 4 stars!
I read this book on Kindle even though it was posted as a paperback. I couldn't find a Kindle version to post. I really enjoy this series. I really enjoyed this story. I was very surprised toward the end. I never expected that..........Not giving anything away, read it for yourself.
"The Maid's Daughter" Janice Maynard, I really enjoyed this novel; speaking from a reader who read the book in a morning/afternoon time frame. This is was my first The Men of Wolff Mountain book in the miniseries . I'm looking forward to reading the past books for this series!!
I swear to god, the beginning was so good, a solid 4-star read, when he rescued her from the car accident and we learn that they actually know each other from childhood. And I did enjoy that part. There was some good chemistry, not gonna lie, and they start their relationship with some clear rules: no strings attached, just sex.
But of course, they start falling for each other. And I was ok with that but the hero was kind of a jerk at times and the heroine was a spineless doormat.
And then the ending? It was as if the author got tired of writing and just said "Fuck this shit!" and that's how we got what we got and that's why my rating dropped from solid 4 to very meh 2 stars.
Ini novel sulit dikategorikan sbg social climber tapi bgmn ya. Soalnya bercerita ttg anak majikan yg pulkam dan sudah kaya raya kemudian merayu anak pelayan rumahnya. Klise sih. Karakter Devlyn yg pny masa lalu yg suram menyebabkan dirinya jd sosok pria yg unik.
Not my type solution.
I loved reading the next installment of this series. I also love seeing big, strong men brought to their knees with love, when they've sworn never to love, ever. My husband was the same way. We've been married almost 24 years now. LOL
"Never try to hide from a Wolff,” he said, teasing her. “I’ll always find you.”
Sometimes You Don’t Want a Second Chance.
I really have to stop reading books that have a super rich male protagonist. (Is there even situations where it’s the other way around?) Also it’s easy to “make your first million” when you already have money — unless you’re telling us that he is supposed to be spoiled and snobby (you probably weren’t).
The novel kicks off with our über-rich CEO Devlyn Wolff driving home to his Wolff Mountain (you will also see many lone wolf reference and plays on his last name) in the dusk when an oncoming car wrapped itself into a telephone pole.
You guessed it; the person in that car is the other protagonist to our Devlyn — Gillian Carlyle, his family’s maid’s daughter — which he doesn’t recognize because they haven’t seen each other in a long time. They used to know each other!
A second chance. A tragic history to their lives. I feel like I typed the exact same review already.
The book is boring. I mean great — your family has a dark past — apparently everyone in these books all do. There’s nothing making you stand out against all the other books. You didn’t even make me cry (or care)! There was no obstacles. No one really cared that you two are together minus stern warnings. The sex parts weren’t even good. (I guess you can’t write cock in Harlequin books but you can write breasts?)
I give it 2/5 because the book threw in a nice plot of philanthropy for Devlyn and his Wolff family. It was worth the quick read but not your money.
Also kids, always wear condoms. Characters who don’t wear condoms take me out of the story unless it is intention.
Rich reclusive dude gets a second chance at being friends and more with a childhood acquaintance when they get in an accident on the family's mountain. Super wealthy Devlyn Wolff hurt the young Gillian Carlyle when they were children because she tried to be a friend after Devlyn's mother's funeral, but he harshly rejected her and then they avoided each other for the next twenty years. So the car accident brings them together and then Devlyn offers Gillian a job to keep her in his life. So a bit of office romance as well as the second chances although the office is the mountain that his family owns and the school project which Gillian is supposed to take care of. This brings cute and sexy opportunities for outside sexy time which is uncomfortable and I personally do not recommend but beggars can't be choosers when there are intrusive observant family members at the homes so private time is difficult to find. Well written and edited romance which is expected with Harlequin publications, with a surprising hidden child abuse theme that is treated with respect. 192 pages and found this as a kindle freebie 2 stars
Looking through the ratings I see that either people enjoyed it a lot or not at all. I however, love Devlyn as a character just for the mere fact that he is tormented. Yes to many that may sound strange but I like how the author seemed to be able to grasp the emotion behind his character and describe what he was feeling and why and how through time that feeling did or did not progress. I will admit that I found his 'finding' the one to get him to realize it was not his fault and healing him business was rather cliche. But overall because of his character I have to say I liked the book. Since I received this for free, this is the first I am reading of the series. So if I come by the others I most definitely see myself reading them, for we see how Devlyn was not the only one tormented by their pasts.
I liked it though not as much as Larkin's story, soit gets 3,5*. I knew there was going to be abuse since I've read ahead but I wish it wasn't shown like Devlyn fell in love and magically all of his problems went away. Like one minute he's freaking out about having kids and being abusive parent and in the next he's saying he hopes they'll produce kid that day/night. If there had to be a "big fight" why couldn't they have been trying to work it out and keep Jamie's abuse triggering Devlyn's memories, running away and Gillian going after him. Or having him want to have kids in an epilogue set few months later. It still wouldn't be perfect of course but I feel like it would've been better. Gotta say I'm not the biggest fan of Annalise, she was mean (and not only here from what I remember). I understand that she cares about her family and it's admirable but being mean and throwing accusations simply based on the fact that Gillian was housekeeper's daughter. If she thought her brother was being stupid for helping someone out or being used she should go to him about it, especially without evidence. When she first talked to him instead she said Gillian wasn't too pretty. Charming that one.

beautiful story of Devlyn the eldest son of Vincent Wolff who suffered abuse from his mother and Gillian the daughter of pne of the Maids id Wolff's castle. I loved both characters and the way Gillian discover different layers of Devlyn personality and loved him fiercely enough to go to him and help him aknowledge his past and deal with it. I really loved it. I would have preffered another cover, because this book is also about friendship, recoevring and not just another pinky romance.
O plot do livro é bom, mas foi mal executado. Parece que faltam partes da história. Fica tudo meio jogado, disperso. O casal não tem praticamente nenhuma química, e o final também deixou muito a desejar.
The plot of the book is good, but it was poorly executed. It feels like parts of the story are missing. Everything is a bit thrown around, scattered. The couple has practically no chemistry, and the ending also left a lot to be desired.
I didn't like it. I wasn't a fan of heroine chasing after hero at the end and her saying if he got her pregnant she'd expect him to marry her. I get why she said that because he had demons that he needed to get past, but I would rather him get there on his own. It felt like she was pursuing him while he didn't show an indication that he wanted anything beyond sleeping together. Np.

I listened to this book on Youtube. I really enjoyed the story of Jillian and Devin. Jillian remember Devin from when she was a little girl her mother was his family's maid and still is. Now she is working for him and he wants to have sex with her. Can she get through him and his fears?
I could swear that I have read this before but it may have been before Goodreads. Typical whirlwind romance with hero just sure there’s no way he’ll ever be good enough to be a husband and a heroine who loves him so much he can fight his demons.
It wasn't love at first sight. She remembered him, he couldn't pick her out of a crowd of one. But somehow the childhood acquaintances fall headlong in love after she agrees to be his lover. Easy quick read.
Some serious problems with the story --chauvinist older men, people who just met being in lust then love, badly handled ending plot. A fast read, though.
Awalnya menarik Semakin dibaca kok ya malah mengecewakan.seperti ditulis terlalu terburu2,dengan perubahan sikap karakternya yg mendadak bgt dan berakhir dengan solusi yg terlalu dipaksakan
