This is the story of Roo, a little dinosaur who one day meets a woolly mammoth in a hot-air balloon. The balloon has a hole and gradually deflates, floating down to the ground and leaving the little mammoth stranded. Roo saves the day by giving the mammoth a piece of his precious comfort blanket (his moomie, as he calls it) which they use to patch the hole.
A story about kindness and sharing, with lovable characters created by the best-selling illustrator of the Lettice the Dancing Rabbit series, Mandy Stanley.
We originally picked up this book for our son as our dog, a red setter, is named Roo! It turned out to be a sweet story of a little dinosaur who is very much attached to his comfort blanket - a situation that many parents of children will be familiar with!
In this story a large woolly mammoth finds his way into Roo's home because his hot air balloon is damaged. The only thing that will repair it, so the mammoth can fly home, is Roo's 'Moomie' (blanket). While Roo is sad, at first, to part with Moomie, he realises that he has made a new friend in mammoth, and that is more valuable to him. We touch on sharing and selflessness here, both good messages for childre, but one issue I had with this book is Roo's use of short sentences, such as, "Roo's Moomie", "Roo run", "Roo play". Fine, perhaps, for younger children, but overall not ideally what I want to continually read to my son.
Nonetheless a simple and sweet story that should appeal to very little ears. 3 stars.

Roo loves his little moomie. It goes wherever Roo goes. When Roo meets a mammoth named Wooly who has lost his way, he finds himself a new friend. However, Wooly met Roo because his hot air balloon got a tear in it. Wooly still needs to get back home, but when the only thing that can patch his balloon is Roo's moomie, what will Roo do?
This is a sweet story of kindness, friendship, and sacrifice.
Roo has his favorite blanket but when he meets and becomes friends with Wooly, who is stranded because his hot air balloon has a hole in it, Roo gives Wooly his blanket to help him get home. The blanket is then used to patch the hole in the hot air balloon and Wooly goes home.
Amazing illustrations and is a good book to read to kindergarten or first grade to teach about sacrifice and sharing.
Roo lives alone on a tropical island with his beloved Moomie. When a new friend's balloon crash lands on the island, Roo has lots of fun with Woolly. But Woolly can't stay forever, and his balloon needs to be fixed so he can go home. Can Roo help his new friend get on his way?
This is a very sweet book about sacrificial love for a friend. Roo is probably the sweetest little dinosaur around, and has a cute baby way of talking (often in just 2 word sentences). But even though Roo is little and simple in many ways, there's depths in that little heart that should inspire and move readers. You could have a great discussion with kids about giving being better than receiving and why Roo did what he did. The illustrations in this are adorable too. Lots of fun.
Roo The Roaring Dinosaur is about a dinosaur named Roo who loves his blankie very much. When Roo's new friend Wooly the mammoth gets stranded on his island, they instantly become best friends. Roo does a lot of things with Wooly, like piggy back rides, star gazing, and all the fun things he does with Blankie! Sadly, Wooly's giant balloon is broken and needs to be repaired. Roo realizes the only thing that is just the right size to fix Wooly's balloon is his beloved Blankie. Roo must make a hard choice between something he wants and helping his friend. This story teaches that sometimes in order to help friends, we may have to put their needs before our wants however, but that doesn't mean our selflessness will go unnoticed.
Activity- Have the children bring their favorite thing in the world to play with to class. Have a class toy exchange and ask them to give their toy to a classmate that they think might need it more than they do. At the end of the day, have the kids talk about how giving their favorite toy to someone else made them feel.

Summary: Roo the dinosaur loves his blankie more than anything. One day, Roo meets Wooly when Wooly's hot air balloon crashes on Roo's island. As much as Roo and Wooly love playing together, Wooly needs to get home. The new friends discover that the only thing capable of fixing Wooly's hot air balloon is Roo's blankie. This book is a great book for teaching about the concepts of sharing and being kind!
Activity: A fun activity would be for the students to design their own hot air balloons! They could design it however they wanted and discuss why they did it that way. It would be fun to have a spot on their hot air balloon dedicated to where Roo's blankie fixed the hole! Students could also brainstorm ideas of how they would like to play with Wooly and Roo. A discussion about times the students were kind or shared something special could also be held!
