Black Hills Baby is a first book in a Black Hills Rendezvous series. In it, you will meet Libby and Cooper. Yeah, their romance was okay and shit.. but damn, I have really gotten picky when it comes to this shit now.
Libby's sudden need to have a kid was meh to me. I just don't see it happening where she would give up some family value of a gold mine to just have a kid. But it kind of back fires on her when a child actor, name Cooper, responds to her message about having a kid.
Of course I could already see the shit storm that was coming our way. I also, however, already knew that this ending for them was going to be predictable af. I liked them but I wasn't fully invested into them.
I’ve read quite a few books by this author and, for me, by far the majority have been 5* reads and IMHO this is another! Most of the stories I’ve read from her have involved a small, close knit community - usually Marietta in Montana but the location has changed for this new series. This story is mainly set in the Sentinel Pass, a small community that you just can’t pass through as it is at a dead end road. They have some tourists, but not many and most folks have lived there for generations. . . . including the postmaster, Libby McGannon. She’s single and really wants to become a mother but has no boyfriend or prospect of one so she advertises on the internet for a sperm donor and that’s the trigger for the whole story and series….
Cooper Lindstrom is an actor and presenter who has been devastated by his mother’s untimely death, especially when he discovers she’s gambled away most of her own and his money, so much so that he’s having death threats from one bookie she dealt with. His current series is unlikely to be renewed so he needs to kick start his career again and he believes making a sitcom based upon Libby’s advert may be the way to recoup his losses. He contacts Libby and goes to visit and as attraction flares between them, Cooper finds that maybe he does want to become a real father to Libby’s child but with his secret agenda he knows that Libby will never forgive him for changing her safe haven town and for not being truthful from the start . . .
The town is filled with fantastic secondary characters and it is easy to see additional stories involving more of these in future. I particularly enjoyed the development of a relationship between Cooper and Libby, Mac, Kat, Jenna and Char. I’m hoping that there will be romance around the corner for all these characters as the series progresses. I really liked the small town winning out over glitz and glamour. There are plenty of obstacles to a HEA ending and how these are overcome keeps this heart warming story another winner as far as I’m concerned, as “Hollywood meets the real wild west” in this delightful small community romance.
I unashamedly love Debra Salonen's books and Black Hills Baby has earned its place among those books I will go back and reread over and over. Quite simply, it's a keeper. Both Libby and Cooper have their own insecurities. For Hollywood TV star Cooper there's a lack of self belief courtesy of his mother, who has managed every day of his life and career until the moment she died. Cooper doesn't think he's got much going for him in the brains department as his mother has conditioned him since he was a little boy to accept that he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. What he does have in spades are his looks, a given since he's a Hollywood star, and a sense of compassion epitomised in the way he looks out for his elderly neighbour. As for Libby, well she is also caring and compassionate, but doesn't have much faith in her ability to make a relationship work. Set in the black hills of South Dakota, this book really does depict a clash of two worlds and I have to say that it was enormously comforting to me to find the backwater charms of Sentinel Pass winning out over the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. If you like heartfelt love stories, then I feel sure you'll enjoy this one. I for one am now off to buy the sequel, Black Hills Billionaire, for another dose of the same.
How do I tell you how wonderful this book is? I wish I had a better way with words to tell you how great Libby and Coopers love story is. The characters in this small town story or just so real you could see yourself setting down to have coffee or tea with them. I wish the TV show that is being planned in the book around Libby and her hometown was really going to be coming on televison I so want to see it, or maybe a movie based on the book, I'd love to see it. I recommend this book to adult romance readers, I give it 5 stars, I say don't miss it it's a keeper, how eles can I say I loved it? I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a review, lucky me!
What’s that old saying? When life gives you lemons make lemonade. Yeah, okay. But if you’re plum outta sugar it’s gonna be pretty bitter lemonade! And that’s sort of where both Libby and Cooper are at the beginning of their adventure.
Libby is the postmaster of a very tiny, off the beaten track town in the Black Hills called Sentinel Pass Events in and around her life have brought her to the point where she wants a baby, but knows there is no relationship to make that dream come true the old fashioned way. So… she places an interesting ad for a sperm donor in exchange for a small percentage of a gold mine. The fact that the mine hasn’t produced gold in a very long time is beside the point to Libby – she figures a guy would love the bragging rights vs the actual profits. She has everything thought out – except the reality of the whole plan, and maybe falling for the guy.
Cooper’s world has sort of imploded on him. His reality show is most likely in its last season since it’s tanking in the ratings. He’s worked his entire life since he was in diapers at something in the entertainment industry, actor, model, TV host. He knew his mother liked to gamble. And since she directed every aspect of his career, she also had control of the finances. She was his mother, why wouldn’t he trust her? Maybe because she’s a gambler, an addicted to gambling gambler. And now she was dead. As he might soon be if he can’t pay off her debts to a bookie who isn’t willing to wait for his money. Coop’s gone from having his life pretty much together – to see it spiraling out of control. In an odd set of circumstances, he came across Libby’s ad. First thought – gold mine. Money. Second thought – why not? It wasn’t as if he needed the sperm. And that final either brilliant or the dumbest thing ever thought – wouldn’t this whole thing make a great sit-com. He could be back on his feet with a hit, and get the bookie and his ex-wives off his back. No need for Libby to know his plans, and shouldn’t the townsfolk be excited to have the tourists flocking to their tiny, unknown town? *sigh* Oh, Cooper.
Not surprisingly, things did not go according to either Libby’s or Cooper’s plans. And that is where the fun begins.
I completely enjoyed this kick off the series story of Cooper and Libby’s romance. Now to be honest, Cooper could have been an annoying character. The fact that he isn’t comes through the crafting and writing of Ms Salonen. We are completely aware that Coop does not understand the world outside of the “magic universe” of the entertainment industry. His entire profitability has depended upon his looks and talent. His mother was the worst of the stage mothers around, and she kept him firmly under her thumb by convincing him that he was the bumbling village idiot. And sadly, in some ways he was – but now, he’s going to get a taste of real life, consequences of his actions and caring about someone else’s future more than his own.
Black Hills Baby gives us a charming setting, a wide variety of interesting and eccentric secondary characters who will be around throughout the series – and a chance to watch this train wreck change into something amazing. That’s worth following a series for, in my opinion. I loved it and would definitely recommend this story and series to any Romance reader who loves complicated characters, detailed story lines and simply a heck of a good time falling into a story.
To be honest, this took me a lot to get through. I think there were about 50 or more pages too many, full of details of feelings and thoughts that were repeated too many times from both the thoughts of the heroine and the hero of the piece. They dragged the story out and helped it to lose momentum.
I thought Libby was a strong character to start, but she seemed to lose that strength as the story moved along. And for someone who spent so much time in the public eye, Cooper spent too much time whining and in a self-pity bag. I loved the love story itself, because I love a good HEA. However, Cooper's thought processes were simply too childish and depressing to me. When he decided to accept the deal with Libby, it would have been nice to see him get past some of the things that happened because of his mother's mishandling of his finances, pick himself up and take charge of the situation. It isn't until he returns to the town that he seems to wants to take any kind of responsibility for his action. And then, it's like night and day, down to his sudden referrals to her as "Lib" and "my love" in public. It just doesn't compute. I could understand the change in pet names once they were in private, but not in a public situation, in front of the entire town...a town, I might add, that he is trying to win over for his sitcom.
Also, we never hear any more about the streak of gold Cooper noticed while he was in the mine. Had he been that hard up for money, I would think that would have been one of the first things he would have pointed out to Libby's brother or to Libby herself. This was just one more thing that didn't add up.
I think it could be a good story if some of the bothersome monologue were to be edited out and if Cooper would actually grow up and take responsibility for his situation sooner. The HEA was perfect, and in fact, I liked the entire scene in the kitchen where she tells him what has occurred since he left. I think this story could be cleaned up to make a good romance. I simply isn't there right now.
Libby McGannon is all kinds of careful and undramatic. But when she decides that she needs to have a child, she puts up an Internet ad and offers a share of her family gold mine in exchange for a sperm donation. Before she has a chance to change her mind Cooper Lindstrom responds. He’s a child actor grown into a heart throb who is down on his luck. His controlling mother died recently and he is being threatened by a gambling syndicate to repay her losses. He needs to get out of the city and maybe a small town in South Dakota is far enough away? Libby has never met anyone like him before and putting him up in the cabin out the back of her place while they get to know each other, means that he is within her reach. And isn’t that the problem? *** I confess that I read out the synopsis of this book to my kids and we all laughed at how ridiculous it was. Then one said ‘is the book just as bad?’ I downloaded it. (It was free in a bookbub promo) and I have to admit that it is not as bad as I thought it would be. I had some early issues:
Even though I feel like a dried up shell and am afraid my soul is too barren at this point to host a fertilized egg. (Kindle Locations 218-219).
Oh dear. Sweetie if you’re trying to grow a baby in your soul, that could be why it isn’t working? Is there some reason she can’t just get a donation from a reputable sperm clinic and it will cost her almost nothing? And Cooper is doing this to hide from a bookie and then is presumably filming it and broadcasting his location? He’s not smart, is he? That should be wind shear not ‘wind sheer’… oh, no I’m editing again. But then I got caught up in the story. It ends happily (not a spoiler as it is a romance) and by the end I was rooting for these two. 3 stars
Welcome to Sentinel Pass, South Dakota! This first book in Debra Salonen’s Black Hills series got me hooked right away.
Hollywood heartthrob Cooper Lindstrom’s finances are a mess – after his mother (and manager) passes away, he finds out that she has gambled away almost all of his money. In order to temporarily escape the bookie who is trying to collect on her debts, Cooper travels to Sentinel Pass to earn a bit of money by donating his sperm.
Libby McGannon is the postmaster of Sentinel Pass and doesn’t feel like she will ever find the right person, especially with the limited male offerings in Sentinel Pass. She wants a baby of her own, however, so she places and ad online to purchase sperm for in-vitro. She will give the donor 25% share in her family’s gold mine, conveniently leaving out that it hasn’t produced much gold.
After connecting online, Libby has Cooper come to Sentinel Pass so that they can meet and determine if he is the right man for her needs. When Cooper arrives in Sentinel Pass, he quickly realizes that Libby’s story and the quirky residents of Sentinel Pass would make for the perfect sitcom. He never expected to fall in love with Libby. When Libby finds out about Cooper’s plans, she feels betrayed. Can these two overcome their differences and let love lead the way?
All of the characters in this book are great, not just Cooper and Libby, and I can’t wait to read about the escapades of the others in future Black Hills installments. Well done, Ms. Salonen! If you enjoy small town romances with a touch of humor, this book is for you.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, finding love when you least except it, and to all of the quirky townspeople of Sentinel Pass. Hollywood heart throb, Coop needs to make some fast money when he finds this add for a sperm donor. Libby, has not had any luck in the boyfriend department but she wants to be a mother, so she is on the lookout for a sperm donor. They soon agree to this, so Coop makes a trip to Sentinel Pass, but soon finds this would be the perfect place for a tv sitcom. What he does not plan on is finding true love. Once Libby finds out the truth of the sitcom, she soon puts an end to the sperm donor business, but is it to late.
I highly recommend this book to all romance readers. I truly believe it would be an awesome tv sitcom!! I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series, Black Hills Billionaire. I relieved this book from the author for an honest review.
This wasn't what I expected in a book about a Hollywood star. Coop has been ruled and organised by his mother his whole life and we gradually get to see his insecurities and lack of self-belief. I just wanted to give him a hug! Libby lives where she is but needs a child to complete her life. These two come together in a quirky and beautiful was. If I'm picky I would love to have followed them a bit further, for Coop to learn more about himself and how his mother wasn't always right. A really lovely, gentle read with well written characters and a large cast, with the main characters glowing brightly.
This was a really fun story. Cooper and Libby were both great characters. Cooper was the perfect combination of snooty actor and bumbling guy with low self-esteem. It was fun to watch how his character grew throughout his "adventure" in Sentinel Pass. Libby was a very strong character, almost too strong. She spent way too much time caring about what everyone else would think or say about her. It's one of the hazards of being in a very small town. Her friends were a great crew of girls though. It was a fun story to read.
If you've never read a Debra Salonen book, start with this one. The characters are sweet, small townish, yet savvy, strong, loyal-and then Hollywood comes to town in the form of Cooper Lindstrom. Cooper and Libby sizzle and pop as they find their way in making an online proposition work for them both. I love these two, and the little town if Sentinal Pass. You will, too.
Libby wants to have a baby. She puts a online ad out for s sperm doner. Chad answers the ad. He just lost him mom to a heart attack and is being pestered by a loan shark. He thinks he can get the money from the mine she is offering a share in. But he actually is also thinking about writing a show about the whole thing. But love seems to seep through.
This is a cute book. Reminiscent of Harlequin romance. Small town postmistress goes to the internet to look for a sperm donor. Reality TV star responds to the add. The third main characyer is the toen
Cooper Lindstrom, a Hollywood actor is having a hard time dealing with the death of his mother and how she left his financial situation and the down turn in his career. Libby McGannon, the Postmaster of Sentinel Pass, South Dakota put an ad on the Internet for a man's sperm in trade for 1/4 interest in a gold mine. Coop answered that posting and out of the hundreds of responses, Libby picked him and he found the escape from his difficulties he was looking for. He had a plan for his next TV series that sets Black Hills Baby in motion.
The characters, the witty comments and the dialogue were delightful. Coop starts out seeming like a hard to like hero but he keeps growing on you as he figures out what he really wants. Libby is sweet, giving and well-liked in her small town until it gets out that a Hollywood film crew is coming to town.
The setting is described in detail. The characters are well-developed and the ending happy to make this a funny romance that I loved.
I received this book free from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing an honest review. I could only stay with the book to chapter 5 and then I gave up, I could not get into it. Cooper is an actor on a drowning TV reality show, his mother has just died and left thousands of dollars in debt to her bookie, and both of his alimony checks to his 2 ex's bounced. He sees an on line ad in exchange for his sperm he gets a quarter of a gold mine and he jumps on it. Libby is the post master in the small South Dakota town she has lived in all her life. She wants a baby and her clock is getting close to time out so she places an on line ad for a quarter share of a gold mine in exchange for sperm. Should she mention that the mine does not produce gold? Nah.
Great premise and story, and I did enjoy it, only problem was that it took around half the book for the romance to actually start, and I felt like the romance and drama was pushed in in the end.. If the romance (and the dramatic twist) hade come earlier and been given more room it would have been four stars!
Fun concept with a clutsy, dumb blonde Hollywood actor for the hero, and a steadfast, dependable, small town post master for a heroine. I enjoyed the Black Hills story setting. A few minor issues with story telling but over all an enjoyable read.
It has an Intreating story line, believe able people , a small town that anyone would love to live in. Just a truly enjoyable book to read. Try it, you won’t be sorry
Wow! Off the wall story line of a small village meets Hollywood with caring people all around. Libby wants more in her life but gets more than she bargained for.
This was a really good read. At first I wasn't sure if I would like it but the more I kept reading the more interesting the plot line got. Plus the more I read the more the characters really played out in my head. It was like imagining a reality TV series that played out in my imagination. Debra has a very interesting way of filling in all the details at just the right time. I really enjoyed this book.
