Tutoring the captain of Frost Lake High's soccer team isn't on her bucket list. And neither is falling for him.
Seventeen-year-old Lacey Kerr is a lot of head cheerleader, an A+ student, vice president of student council, a loyal friend, and beloved by her classmates.
What she isn't is a fan of star soccer player Vaughn Collins.
And he knows it.
Unfortunately for him, he needs her.
With his grades on the line, he'll do anything to turn it around and keep his spot on the soccer team. Even if it means winning over his ex-girlfriend's best friend and convincing her to tutor him.
They're different. She's sunshine and he's…not. She has a bucket list of fun things to do before high school is over and he's allergic to fun.
But as they spend more time together, studying and crossing things off Lacey's list, they realize they're more alike than either of them wants to admit.
She doesn't want to fall for him, and he doesn't want to fall for anyone. They're both good at playing the game, but maybe this time it could be forever.
This is a classic sports romance. Team captain x tutor. Though in this case the athlete was the fmc bestfirends ex, which I found a little off putting because the author made us hate him in the last book, (or atleast I did) I found Lacey and Vaughns relationship very dense, and I felt like they did'nt really have any tension or passion between them. I also jst could not get past how Lacey was dating her bestfriends ex that did her so dirty, even though she has a new boyfriend.
I want to start off by thanking NetGalley, Rebecca Jenshak & Bloom Books for sending me this book. I am most grateful, and I will provide an honest review. Everything I’ll say is formed of my opinion only.
Review time!!
Are Vaughn and Lacey better than Claire and Austin? One thousand percent. There’s something about the tutor and the captain of a team trope that will always get me. I’m a sucker for that and it kinda being grumpy x sunshine too? Adorable.
In the beginning, I was a little off putted considering this is Claire’s ex that Lacey was getting with, but given their age, I think it’s fine. I thought a second chance romance would be better for Claire and Vaughn but come to think of it, they never really made sense romantically.
They benefited off of each other in the sense of having the same goals. That’s all really. What Vaughn did (leaving Claire in the first book) will always be shitty but it’s one of those leeway moments you can have for some characters.
If they were in their late twenties acting like this, I’d obviously be like ‘erm no’ BUT they’re teens here so high school ‘drama/relationships’ makes sense. I do believe though, however, that Vaughn could have had a better character development.
In a way, it didn’t feel as if his character got much justice from the first book, but towards the end, I really liked his character. Do I think Vaughn could be a bit more yearn-y/pathetically down bad? Yes. But, I mostly wish that every time.
I liked Lacey’s character though actually. More than I expected to. I do, however, hoped we could have gotten more interactions of her dad and his dad. It feels important to me that it happens. Regardless, I enjoyed it.
The football (soccer) moments? Freaking everything to me. I would have liked more in depth football moments but I’ll take it. Also, the mention of Arsenal was off putting. I’m saying that because I hate the club with everything in me. I am an Arsenal hater, so naturally, when they came up, I side eyed.
Pick a better team, girl. My Liverpool heart is breaking every time that stupid Arse club is mentioned. Anyone but them. Well that’s not true, I hate every club that’s not mine. Okay, I’m getting distracted.
My favourite scene was probably when the two of them kissed underneath the stars (bucket list check). It was such a soft and sweet scene, it’s pure romantic softness moments that I love to read about.
Overall, I enjoyed this book but I believe it could be improved in other aspects [as listed above] and possibly a little longer by giving us scenes of them travelling internationally.
Like for instance, incorporating a school field to go abroad and in a way, Lacey does that list. And other stuff on the list gets completed. But, yeah, nonetheless, an adorable, sweet, heartfelt book.
I hope we get Rowan’s book next. Rowan and Austin’s sister (maybe). I’m excited either way!
I don't read a lot of YA romance but if Rebecca writes it I will read it and I am so glad I did! This was such a sweet story with all the high school nostalgia! LOVED IT!
Vaughn's sole focus is Soccer and is failing math. He turns to the smartest girl in his grade to tutor him which so happens to be his ex's best friend. Lacey is the peppiest person in school and so full of sunshine so she isn't thrilled to help Vaughn who is serious all the time and doesn't know how to let loose. The more time they spend together the more they realize that they may have judged each other too harshly. They begin to push each other out of their comfort zones and come together to complete Lacey's high school bucket list is the sweetest way.
Vaughn stepped up in the biggest way! The way he wanted to help Lacey check off every single line on her bucket list was so dang cute. Lacey helped Vaughn realize there is more to life than just soccer. The character growth between them was so incredible! The connection was perfectly done for a high school couple. I didn't feel like it was too unrealistic or too much. And Vaughn's grand gesture at the end had me so giddy! I can't wait to read more from this series!!
AUDIO: This was narrated by Jesse Vilinsky and Andrew Eiden. I enjoyed this one a lot! They both embodied the high school setting and gave into all the highs and lows that come with that age.
-YA Romance -Soccer Captain x Cheerleading Captain -Grumpy x Sunshine -She tutors him -Opposites Attract -Best Friends Ex -Bucket List
First of all, Thank you Rebecca & NetGalley for gifting me this early reading opportunity!!!
This is my second book by Rebecca Jenshak and she just has a way of pulling me in! I can’t wait to read more by her.
This was a cute, heartfelt, high school romance, with mild spice & lots of great characters! At first I was a little put off by the whole best friend’s ex trope, however the way this was written makes it impossible not to pull for these two!! I was so drawn into their characters and all they were dealing with in their personal lives, but also really enjoyed the relationship and bonding between them & the side characters as well.
Lacey is the cheerleader who is good at math & Vaughn is the captain of the soccer team who needs to pass this algebra test! This was a fun tutor x team captain story, with some added emotional aspect. A great story about finding what makes you happy and getting out of your comfort zone! These two were so perfect together & Lacey was just this optimistic ray of sunshine that Vaughn absolutely needed in his life! I loved these two and this story!
after enjoying the first book, i was excited for this one, and it did not disappoint. i had a great time again. lacey reminds me of myself trying to be my best self in high school with school, sports, etc., which made her very relatable to my younger self 🫂 i love lacey and vaughn together. they were super cutie and overall this was a super cute read!
lacey is a head cheerleader, an A+ student, vice president of student council, a good friend, and loved by her classmates. she isn’t a fan of star soccer player vaughn (he is after all her best friend’s ex). however, he needs her because his grades and spot on the team are on the line. he plans to convince her to tutor him so he can continue playing, BUT the more time they spend together, they realize they are more alike than they want to admit.
tropes: grumpy x sunshine, best friend’s ex bf, cheerleader x soccer player, tutoring the team captain, bucket list, young adult
Playing with Forever is book two of the Frost Lake High Series and it was completely adorable! This was my first arc read of 2026 and I really enjoyed this one. I don't often read YA romance, but I will read anything and everything that Rebecca writes! It was a classic cheer captain x star soccer player that was needing some help with Algebra to maintain his eligibility to play soccer. These two were opposites in everyday, definitely a grumpy x sunshine story, and I loved that Lacey brought out some positivity and ability to actually just enjoy high school for Vaughn. Overall, such a fun YA romance and I would definitely recommend this one!
I adored this book! It’s been a while since I’ve read a YA romance, mainly cause I don’t have any auto-4-or-5-stars authors for this genre but now I gained one! Thank you Rebecca for the ARC 🩷
Every type of romance can be cute but there is something different about high school romance. It’s simply a different kind of cute. I loved how Lacey and Vaughn weren’t into each other right away. I don’t mind instant attraction but I LOVE when the relationship between the main characters slowly develops and this is exactly what happens here! ⚽️🎓Soccer player team captain X tutor (she’s also a cheerleader!) 💞He’s her best friend’s ex but it’s not really a forbidden trope (a pro for me, I’m not a huge fan of any type of forbidden tropes) 📋 she has a high school bucket list to complete
It wasn’t my first Rebecca’s book (but it was my first YA one!) so I knew I would enjoy the writing style. The characterization is well done, too, as always.
One of my favorite parts about Rebecca’s sports romance is the sports aspect. I love reading sports romance but I’m not exactly into any of the sports I read about, also not a fan of any team etc. With that said - I love how Rebecca’s books do have the sports paragraphs! The actual sport really happens on page and the writing of such scenes and the amount of them is perfect. I think it’s balanced well for both parties to enjoy - sports enthusiasts and people like me ;).
While sticking to the series order is obviously advised, this book totally works as a standalone. I haven’t read the first book in the series and I don’t feel like it affected my experience with Playing with Forever negatively.
Playing with Forever is book two in the Frost Lake High series, and it completely won me over. This YA sports romance follows Lacey and Vaughn and delivers such a cute, heartfelt high school love story that’s easy to fall into.
At first, I was a little unsure because of the best friend’s ex-boyfriend trope, and I also wasn’t the biggest Vaughn fan after book one. But Rebecca Jenshak handled both so well. The situation felt realistic for a high school romance, especially since Claire and Vaughn didn’t have much in common beyond their shared drive and work ethic. That made Lacey and Vaughn’s relationship feel natural, genuine, and earned.
I loved the tutor x student and cheerleader x soccer star dynamics, paired with a classic grumpy (Vaughn) x sunshine (Lacey) vibe. The banter between them was adorable, and while they seem like complete opposites at first, they actually have a lot in common and truly balance each other out. Completing Lacey’s bucket list together was such a sweet way to deepen their bond.
Vaughn’s character development was a standout for me. Rebecca really gave him a redemption arc, and by the end, I couldn’t help but root for him. This story had all the first real love energy—innocent, emotional, and full of heart.
Overall, this was a sweet, cozy, and feel-good high school romance. At this point, whatever Rebecca Jenshak writes, I’ll absolutely read it. And I’m really hoping Rowan gets his own book next!
"Maybe she has changed me. Or maybe I’m just finally figuring out who I really am."
⭐️3.75
This was a cute, easy read, pretty much everything you’d expect from a YA romance with sports elements. The plot is simple to follow, and I enjoyed the bucket list concept; it was fun watching Lacey work her way through it and grow along the way.
For me, Vaughn had the strongest character development. Seeing him slowly open up and figure out who he really is, and what he wants beyond soccer, was one of the highlights of the story.
Some moments did feel a bit cliché, especially the team captain and cheerleader dynamic, and the fact that he’s her best friend’s ex wasn’t the most compelling trope for me. That said, it all makes sense given that the characters are teenagers, and it fits the overall tone of the book.
Overall, a sweet and enjoyable read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloom Books for the advanced e-copy.
I’m quickly becoming a Rebecca Jenshak fan! This is my first YA book of hers and it was so sweet. It is set in high school, which isn’t always my favorite but the characters were mature and they really sucked me in. I couldn’t put this one down! Vaughn is the captain of the soccer team and he is in desperate need of a tutor so he can stay eligible to play. Lacey is the sunshine cheerleader that is friendly to everyone except Vaughn. Lacey is best friends with Vaughn’s ex and she really makes him work for her friendship. This was such a sweet story. I loved the chemistry and banter between Lacey and Vaughn. These two are more similar than they think and they form such a sweet connection. It really makes me want to go back and read book one in the series. I can’t wait for more from Frost Lake High!
Thank you Bloom and NetGalley for the arc!
Read if you love: ✨grumpy x sunshine ✨cheerleader FMC x soccer player MMC ✨bucket list ✨best friend’s ex
This was a cute YA high school sports romance perfect for fans of authors like Lynn Painter. I liked that the soccer player MMC had no interest in dating but ends up falling for his ex's best friend and math tutor. While she is busy trying not to cross the 'girl code' and focus on completing her dead mom's senior year bucket list that she never finished. There's lots of charming banter, outings and it was good on audio too. Definitely an enjoyable second book in the Frost Lake High series. Many thanks to Bloom Books for sending me a physical ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.
Steam level: kissing only until the epilogue when the couple are older (mild fade to black details)
First ARC of the year and I LOVED it 😭 I adored the first book of this series so much- it was the first book I read in 2025, so I was super excited to have the chance to read the sequel early! Pretty much got approved and finished the book all within 10 hours 🤣
This series is so stinking sweet. It’s YA (which is not normally my jam) but I found this group of characters to be so charming and mature which I find to not always be the case with books set in high school. The romance is tender and wholesome while also having conflict without unnecessary drama. Rebecca Jenshak is an auto-read author for me and this set of books has become my favorite series of hers.
“Maybe she has changed me. Or maybe I’m just finally figuring out who I really am.” s changed me. Or maybe I’m just finally figuring out who I really am.”
Ah young love. Those confusing feelings. So innocent and pure. The excitement of something new and unexpected. It’s been awhile since a read a high school romance, and this one brought back all those experiences. Plus the pressure of grades and balancing sports.
Playing with Forever is so cute. It’s well written, and has a nice flow. This is my first book by Rebecca Jenshak and I’ll definitely pick up more.
Thank you to Bloom & Rebecca for the gifted ARC paperback!
soccer player • cheerleader • best friend’s ex-boyfriend • she has a bucket list • he’s helping her with it
this book was the perfect ya romance! i loved the relationship between lacey and vaughn, i feel like they both pulled each other out of their comfort zone in different ways. the grumpy x sunshine vibes fit their characters so well and i loved the tutor dynamic to friends to more!
if you’re looking for an adorable ya book i would deff recommend this series i loved both books and im hoping we get another book for rowan’s character next!!
This is a cute and mildly spicy sports romance about what happens when people are willing to give up their preconceived ideas about what love is and try something new.
Lacey Kerr is the classic high school It Girl; she’s cheer captain, gets great grades, and has strong relationships with her peers. But, she’s pretty busy and just doesn’t see dating as something worth her time.
Vaughn Collins is the brooding captain and star player of the school soccer team. With the state championship approaching, he doesn’t have time to be distracted by girls. That all changes when he manages to convince Lacey to tutor him to get him back into good academic standing and back onto the field. Can both of them accept that sometimes, having a partner can be an asset rather than a liability, or will they return to their old ways?
When I first started reading this book, I found it to be slightly predictable. Lacey mostly fits into the mold of a high-achieving teenage female protagonist. Although her character is slightly more nuanced due to the caretaking role she plays for her overworked single father and the absence of her mother, the majority of her sections involve glitter and her extremely supportive group of friends.
I also found some of the details at the outset to be too much; there were two scenes involving pencils and pencil lead that nearly put me over the edge. As a middle school educator, I can say definitively that my students a) do not use mechanical pencils and b) can’t keep track of any writing utensil, leaving the floor littered with pencils by the time the bell rings each day.
However, I was able to get past these beginning details that screamed “I am establishing the setting as a high school with typical teenagers!” as the story progressed. The dialogue struck me as realistic, with some swearing, but nothing gratuitous. The parties at Boone’s house also seemed in line with something that could happen after any major high school sports game, and so, the book began to settle into something that I could enjoy, rather than cringe at.
Vaughn was the character who won me over. I delighted in his bumbling attempts at romance (e.g. the protein bar) that were so earnest, but also so off-base. I respected his inner conflict of choosing soccer vs. Lacey as well as how it played out at the end of the book without being too predictable. His relationship with his celebrity father, who is also his coach, was another point of interest in the story as they navigated their changing dynamics when Lacey entered the picture. My only complaint was that I thought it was a little much that Vaughn drove a Range Rover. Even though his dad is rich, elsewhere in the book, it is noted that they purposefully live on the quieter side of town so as not to be flashy, so it seems strange that he would drive such a nice car. But that’s a small detail in comparison to the overall development of his character.
The place where my opinion as an adult likely would diverge from that of a teenager is the bucket list. I didn’t mind that Lacey had the bucket list or that she was working toward completing it (I thought this added good structure to the story), but the updated list at the end of many chapters seemed gimmicky to me. I bet teens would love this detail, though. I know that if I had read this in high school, I probably would have crafted my own bucket list after reading this book!
There is some teen drinking, swearing, and some sexual content in this book (it stops just short of actual sex, though). My copy says it is recommended for ages 16+. I can think of a number of 8th graders who would adore the story (and Vaughn!), so I wouldn’t let those mature elements stop me from recommending it to them as an independent reading book.
This book is for anyone who wants a light and easy high school romance that also has the excitement of a sports team entering the championship part of their season, plus characters grappling with family dynamics and how to maintain their sense of self when entering a new relationship.
Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS/Bloom Books for providing this book for review consideration via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
I may have just found my first feel good romance to begin 2026.❤️ Yes, I realize I'm reviewing this in 2025, but Playing with Forever doesn't officially release until January 2026 so my reasoning stands.
I couldn't set this book down from the moment I picked it up. It's a wonderful view into the demands of being a top high school athlete; with everything that entails - like keeping up your grades, the extra-curriculars, the demanding workouts, and if there is time left - friends or even love. For Vaughn Collins and the way he was raised he would answer no. Outside of school, soccer is his only focus. For Lacey Kerr she finds a way to balance everything and everyone in her busy schedule so she would say yes. Lacey and Vaughn would seem like total opposites when you stand them side by side and for the most part that is true. Lacey is outgoing, bubbly, and smiles at everyone she sees, while Vaughn is stoic, introverted, and hardly says two words to those around him. However, outside appearances may be more deceiving than they appear and these two may actually have more in common they ever would have thought. Sooo, of course this book is also about the first feelings of falling in love, the crazy intensity of thinking about each other all👏 the👏 time👏, and the intense chemistry that comes along with first kisses and long make-out sessions.😍
I was completely captivated by these two and I was honestly shocked by how drawn-in I was by this story. In a way, this was Vaughn's redemption story, not that he was a villain per se, but in the first book, he is Claire's ex-boyfriend and Claire is Lacey's best friend. I don't want to say more to give away too much in either book, but even Vaughn admits he's not the greatest boyfriend because he's so singularly focused on soccer. For what it's worth, it was really nice to get his point of view and understand that he's not a bad guy, but instead just a normal teen with his own problems. Even Claire stands up for him, now that she's happy in her own relationship, saying pretty much the same thing. Lacey checks in with her a few times and it's so sweet to see these two best friends supporting one another and not have any bitterness attached to a relationship that is no longer relevant. Is it realistic at this age, probably not, but Jenshak writes it extremely well and I loved reading how close these two girls are nonetheless.
Lacey is the girl in school that makes you wonder if she ever sleeps. Head cheerleader, perfect grades, on the student council, helps everyone and always has a smile on her face...except for Vaughn. She's still a bit salty at him for dumping her best friend, but because it's Lacey, it also doesn't last long. She truly can't dislike anyone and for that I was grateful. Once she lets Vaughn in, you find out he's actually a likable guy, he just needed a chance to have his story told. It's the small things that speak volumes with him and where Lacy is boisterous with her love and friendship, his quiet emotions shouted from the rooftops. I think it's why I was so enthralled with these two, their yin and yang, but also where they met in the middle, it's what love truly is.
The friendship circle within this book is amazing. The secondary characters always enhance the story, without distracting from the plot and I love that about her writing. 🥰 It's an aspect that Jenshak does extremely well, no matter what she writes. Lacey's personality is larger than life, so it's basically a character all on its own, but the soccer team is full of fun players. I can see more books coming from this world as they each get a book.👌😍
Thank you to Netgalley, Sourcebooks, and Bloom Books for the advance review copy and all opinions are my own.
Playing with Forever is a charming and engaging YA romance that I couldn’t put down from the first page. All of that Rebecca Jenshak magic, just the YA version. The heartfelt romance, the found family of delightful characters, the complex big feelings of first love and growing up, and the nostalgia of high school life and sports and everything in between, from maintaining grades and extracurriculars to rigorous training schedules. It's loads of fun and super cute.
Vaughn Collins, captain of the soccer team, is completely focused on soccer, while Lacey Kerr seems to effortlessly balance school, activities, friends, and family. At first glance, they could not be more different. Lacey is outgoing, bubbly, and warm, whereas Vaughn is stoic, introverted, and reserved. Yet beneath the surface, they have more in common than either realizes, and the chemistry between them is electric.
This book also explores first love in all its intensity. The nervous excitement, the constant thoughts of each other, and the passionate, tender moments that make young romance so compelling. I was completely invested in both Lacey and Vaughn. This story also serves as a kind of redemption arc for Vaughn, allowing readers to see his perspective and understand his choices, which adds nuance to his character. Lacey and her best friend Claire’s friendship is equally well-written, with no lingering bitterness despite the romantic history, which I appreciated. To be honest, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about Lacey dating her bestie's ex that we were made not to like....but their friendship weathers this well.
I love Lacey. She's smart, capable, and endlessly kind. Vaughn complements her perfectly, with quiet emotions that contrast her expressive nature. Together, they strike a beautiful balance, and their relationship is as much about friendship, understanding, and growth as it is about romance. The side characters, including friends and teammates, enhance the story without detracting from the main plot, and the high school sports environment adds energy and excitement. You know the sports are gonna be good in a Jenshak book.
Some aspects might feel a bit tropey or predictable, such as the cheerleader and soccer captain and other archetypal dynamics. But, there are authentic characters at the core of the tropes. Vaughn’s growth throughout the book is the best part, and he certainly has a much louder and compelling arc. Seeing him open up emotionally and reassess his priorities beyond soccer is compelling, and him evolving into a different kind of partner and friend is really satisfying, especially after book 1.
The sports elements are fun, though I will say I expected a bit more in a Jenshak book. The bucket list concept is charming and super cute though, and while some details may feel gimmicky to adult readers, teens will likely adore it. And this adult did too. This is mostly YA in content (some drinking and swearing, fade to black spicy type insinuations, nothing explicity), overall a sweet, lighthearted tone.
Overall, Playing with Forever is an adorable, heartfelt, and relatable YA romance. It balances high school drama, sports, friendships, and first love with deft charisma. Lacey and Vaughn’s chemistry is compelling, and the story’s blend of tenderness, humor, and emotional growth makes it a highly enjoyable read. Fans of Rebecca Jenshak’s work will not be disappointed, and this book is an excellent addition to the Frost Lake High series.
I breezed through this second installment of the Frost Lake High series, and this time, the focus was on Lacey, the head cheerleader and A+ student as she gets sucked into tutoring Vaughn, the Captain of the soccer team, so that he can remain eligible to play with the State Championships on the horizon. Did I mention he's her best-friend's ex?!? This is a classic grumpy sunshine trope, as Lacey is everyone's cheerleader and adores fun while Vaughn seems to enjoy little more than soccer. When Lacey discovers her deceased mother's high school wish list, she decides to finish it for her and add her own tasks as a way to help her feel closer to her. As her and Vaughn grow closer and spend more tome together, he helps her complete her list, but is his focus on her taking him off his game plan?
I think what I love about this series is getting both MC's perspectives, so that l can see l their insecurities and personalities. Lacey misses her Dad who works all the time and puts a lot of pressure on herself to be involved while keeping her perfect grades. Vaughn feels the pressures of his father/coach's expectations and the distance between he and his mom who literally lives across the pond and their seemingly non-existent relationship since his parents divorce. I also love that their high school experience mimicked mine--after hangs at someone's cabin, four wheeler rides, fire pits, and Homecoming dances. Maybe it makes me nostalgic, but there's just something about small-town experiences and of course, a solid sports team to root for!
Of course there's the dreaded 3rd Act breakup, but Vaughn needed that space to realize that he could be on top of his game and still lose AND still be a good boyfriend. I loved how his team helped him see this through their supportive sharing circle where they all passed the ball and shared their insecurities and failures to help him see that they all have weaknesses and owning it just makes them human (more of this in YA sports romance!). I also enjoyed seeing how his Dad opening up to him about his mom was a part of this breakthrough as well. I wish we would have gotten a bit more about his progress with his mom besides the phone calls in the Epilogue though (he's in Europe, closer to his mom...why hasn't she visited?!?). I also l thought Claire's acceptance of Lacey and Graham dating was lacking any sort of weirdness at all, and although her and Austin are still solid in this book, I just didn't buy that it would go that smoothly for high school juniors. But maybe Claire is just a better person than me!
As always, I adore Rowan, and I am really hoping that the next book will be about him and someone who can step in and make him feel special since his absent parents can't seem to.
Thanks to Netgalley & Bloom Books for the e-ARC!

Playing with Forever is my first read of 2026 and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way! A grumpy(broody) soccer star and a sunshine, glitter loving cheerleader experience young love while dealing with the pressures of high school. Vaughn is struggling with Algebra II and needs Lacey's help, but he is the guy who broke her best friends heart. They decide to leave the past in the past and get to know each other in the present, finding out that they have more in common that expected. I couldn't put down this read because of the swoon-worthy moments, high-school/young love nostalgia, and ultimately the heartfelt story about not being afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
Vaughn is a top soccer star for Frost Lake High and his dad just so happens to be the coach/retired pro-soccer player. He lives and breathes the sport, and that why is what easy to miss studying for Algebra II. He seeks help from Lacey who is just about the smartest girl in school, but he doubts she will help. After all, she never really liked him especially after be broke up with her best friend. While her best friend Claire, already forgave him, it is hard for Lacey to see the good in him, and chooses to see him arrogant, broody, and mysterious. But when Vaughn is benched for not keeping his grades up, she surprises everyone when she agrees to tutor him.
Lacey is a bubbly young woman who is full of team spirit. She is the captain of the cheerleading team, loves school, and is loyal. But Vaughn is about to test everything including her patience. She lays down the rules and if he accepts, she will tutor him and get him ready for his re-take exam. What she didn't expect was to get to know him on a personal level. Both rarely dated because they focused too much on their respective passions, soccer & getting good grades.
There was so much beauty in watching them fall for each other. Being vulnerable was hard for them, but together it came easily. I loved that a bucket list was incorporated in the story. It was not only a buffer for Lacey and Vaughn but it made every check off the list even more special. What started off a way to remember her late mother, turned into beautiful moments of stepping out of their comfort zones and cherishing life.
Playing with Forever is a 5 star romance that will find a permanent spot on your bookshelf. It is book 2 in the Frost Lake High series, but can be read as a standalone. Highly recommend to readers who enjoy the following tropes: young love, grumpy/sunshine, broody, mysterious MMC, sports romance.
Thank you so much to Sourcebooks & Bloom Books for the complimentary ebook & book!
This book is out now!
Last year I was introduced to Rebecca Jenshak's work and was immediately taken by it. And so I was excited to see that she also wrote young adult. And my goodness this was SO good!!! I often worry when I read YA which way it will go - more on the juvenile side or more realistic. And this one is on the more realistic side.
My heart. I absolutely love both Vaughn and Lacey. I don't know why I love reading about high school relationships. Maybe because they are just so darn sweet and make me wish that I had that kind of high school experience? Both of them felt very mature for their age. Lacey having to rely on herself a lot of time. This girl had such a good head on her shoulder; being able to balance being a teen, volunteering, head cheerleader and just being active in school. I loved her friendship with Claire and how they were so honest with one another!
"I like you. I like you a lot, and I don't want to be the guy who sucks at relationships anymore."
Vaughn beat up on himself so much and I love how supportive Lacey was to him. There was a moment that he was really down on himself and she just plopped herself down and didn't want to let him push her away. I also love how he was self aware to know that he was doing something wrong in their relationship but with that his immediate reaction was to run and blame himself. He was just so head over heels for Lacey. I love their flirty banter and for a YA things got a little spicy. Now I'm not talking like her adult books but a little bit more teasing than the average YA book (at least the ones I read).
The real villain of this book was Vaughn's dad Jude Collins. I understand he was a pro athlete and he knows what it takes to make it as a top soccer player. But dude retired to a high school soccer coach and just needs to take it down a notch. He put so much pressure on his son and wouldn't just let him be a teenager. I was happy that Vaughn stood up to him and asked to go to the homecoming again.
This is book 2 in the series and I had not read the first one but did not feel like I was missing so much in the first. I was able to figure out Austin and Claire's story from what the author provided. I am hoping that Rowan gets his own book. He was such a fun side character and I want to see him fall in love.
This book just made me so happy as I was reading. I highly recommend if you are looking for a young adult romance, acquaintances to couple, tutor x athlete romance!
“Sometimes you need to show up for people even when they don’t want you there.”
Playing With Forever is the second installment in the Lake Frost High series, and it shines just as brightly as the first. This time, the spotlight lands on Lacey—the sunny, whip smart cheer captain who practically radiates optimism—and Vaughn, the quiet, brooding captain of the soccer team who keeps his world tightly guarded. Lacey doesn’t hate Vaughn because of any drama with Claire; she hates him on principle, mostly because he broke up with her best friend. But when Vaughn asks her for help with math, she starts to see him different… and she sees changes everything.
Their dynamic is incredibly sweet and undeniably swoony. Lacey believes in Vaughn long before he believes in himself, pushing him to see beyond the limits he’s placed on his own future. And Vaughn, in turn, sees past Lacey’s sunshine veneer to the girl who’s been pretending she’s fine with the distance in her relationship with her dad. He’s the first person who notices that her bright exterior hides a longing she doesn’t know how to voice.
“Maybe she has changed me. Or maybe I’m just finally figuring out who I really am.”
Vaughn’s character growth is especially well done. His journey from single minded athlete to someone willing to let more matter—to let someone matter—is heartfelt and satisfying. And Lacey’s growth is just as meaningful. As she helps Vaughn open up, she’s forced to confront her own fears about wanting more from the people she loves. Their opposite personalities make their connection feel even more electric. They challenge each other, soften each other, and pull each other out of their comfort zones in the best ways.
Their banter is adorable, their chemistry is warm and steady, and their emotional beats land with genuine heart. Lacey’s positivity becomes Vaughn’s lifeline when he’s struggling to stay afloat, and Vaughn gives Lacey the space to admit what she really wants instead of pretending everything is perfect.
“I’m better with you. Not worse. I see that now. When you’re in the stands or by my side, I feel like I can do anything.”
Playing With Forever is everything I want in a young adult sports romance—fun, heartfelt, character driven, and full of charm. I’m loving this cast, loving this world, and absolutely committed to seeing where this series goes next.

Seventeen-year-old Lacey Kerr is a lot of things: head cheerleader, an A+ student, vice president of student council, a loyal friend, and beloved by her classmates.

I have now read three Rebecca Jenshak books and I can officially confirm that she’s one of my new favorite romance authors. I haven’t given any of them less than four stars.
This book was so freaking cute. They go APPLE PICKING ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! I fell in love with both Lacey and Vaughn. Lacey being pure optimism, kindness and sunshine and Vaughn being the reserved and quiet but always paying attention kind of person.
This is a Best Friend’s ex trope but let me clarify that there is no drama and no competition between the girls in this book (thanks Rebecca). The main characters are high schoolers but it never gave cringe.
I was hooked since the very first page and I couldn’t stop reading. If I had to be picky, I would’ve loved to explore Lacey’s relationship with her father a little bit more and Vaughn’s with his mother. I felt like something more could’ve been done there but this is me nitpicking.
PS: I’d love to read more about Rowan…

**ARC Review** Playing with Forever (Frost Lake High #2) by Rebecca Jenshak Release date: 1/20/26
Head cheerleader and straight A student Lacey reluctantly agrees to tutor Vaughn, the Captain of the soccer team and her best friend's ex-boyfriend, when his math grade gets him benched in a pivotal time in the season. The two don't see eye-to-eye at first, because Lacey holds a grudge against Vaughn for the way he treated her best friend, Claire, even though Claire is over it and happily in love with Vaughn's teammate Austin.
Lacey is all smiles, pep, and optimism, and Vaughn is quiet and brooding, but soon they realize they have more in common than they realized-- Both driven, both sporty and the heads of their teams, and both have somewhat complicated family dynamics-- and their animosity melts away.
Besides helping him understand Algebra II, Lacey brings out a lighter side in Vaughn that she wants to see more of. Turns out when the broody soccer star actually smiles, he's irresistible! And when Vaughn finds Lacey's highschool bucket list, he goes out of his way to help her check off some items, bringing them even closer.
But when Vaughn's father, former soccer superstar and his current hardass coach, expresses concern about Lacey making Vaughn lose focus, will Vaughn give up the good thing he found with Lacey? Or will her support & belief in him prove to be exactly what he needs to succeed?
This sporty YA romance had all the high school feels. I found myself swooning over the little things that would have felt huge to highschool me. The glances, the smiles, the lingering touches, and the kisses 😘😍🥰. Oh boy, did that bring me back! It was such a good read!
4.75⭐️ .5🌶
I read an advanced copy of this book, and this is my honest review. Thank you to Netgalley, Bloom, and Rebecca Jenshak for the ARC
Playing with Forever is a charming YA romance that captures everything nostalgic about high school—bucket lists, big dreams, academic pressure, and the terrifying excitement of falling for someone when the future still feels wide open.
Lacey Kerr is pure sunshine in the best way: driven, kind, overachieving without being unbearable, and deeply loyal to the people she loves. Vaughn Collins is her opposite—reserved, serious, and emotionally guarded. Their dynamic starts off prickly (ex-drama always adds tension), but the tutoring setup creates a gentle forced proximity that lets their connection grow naturally.
The bucket list element is a standout. Watching Vaughn slowly step outside his comfort zone while Lacey learns not everything needs to be planned makes their relationship feel balanced and meaningful. Their time together isn’t just about romance—it’s about growth, vulnerability, and figuring out who you are before everything changes.
What really works here is the emotional restraint. This is YA done right: clean romance, heartfelt moments, and butterflies without unnecessary angst. The stakes feel real in a high-school way—grades, friendships, reputations, and the fear of caring too much.
Vaughn’s quiet devotion and Lacey’s warmth make this a cozy, feel-good read that still has substance. It’s ideal for readers who love slow-burn tension, tutoring romances, and that “last semester before everything changes” energy.
Tropes: ⚽️YA sports romance ⚽️Tutor x athlete ⚽️Sunshine x grumpy ⚽️Opposites attract
If you’re looking for a wholesome, swoony read that feels like summer evenings and senior-year nostalgia, Playing with Forever is an easy win. 💛⚽️

Blurb Tutoring the captain of Frost Lake High's soccer team isn't on her bucket list. And neither is falling for him.
Vaughn, he needs her help to keep playing soccer on the team Lacey, she is the sunshine and his ex’s best friend
Layec and Vaughn and their beautiful young journey to love
This young adult romance is more than just that. The story follows Lacey and Vaughn. She is Claire’s, who was the main character in the first book, best friend. And he is Claire’s ex. With everything that happened in the first book, it is safe to say she is not his greatest fan. But Vaughn needs the smart girls to tutor him, so he can keep doing what he loves most, playing soccer. The first encounters are rocky but slowly they find their groove and something more than expected. Lacey and Vaughn fall for each other but with everything in their past, shared friends and completely opposite characters things are more than difficult. She is always happy and has something to do, attend or to be. He only wants to play soccer and stay at home. But then again, they are so different that they are perfect for each other. If only they could see that too. When a game ends with a loss for Vaughn he shuts her out and pulls back. But forgetting Lacey is harder than he thought. And Lacey’s heart took a big hit from his behavior. Can and will they find a way together and make things work? Are their feelings strong enough? Can Vaughn come out of his shell and meet Lacey in the middle. Two wonderful characters, so different with so much in common. One beautiful love story. A wonderful book.

I loved Stealing for Keeps (book 1) so wa super excited to go back to Frost Lake High for Lacey and Vaughn’s story!!
Serious quiet soccer captain Vaughn needs helping passing his Algebra class or he won’t be able to play. Bubbly head cheerleader Lacey agrees to tutor him even though she’s not his biggest fan as he is her best friend’s ex. However Lacey learns there is more to Vaughn than meets the eye and when he discovers she is trying to complete her mum’s high school bucket list, Vaughn is on hand to help her tick off everything before the end of the school year.
Adult or YA, doesn’t matter to me I will read anything Rebecca writes and devour it! It was such an easy fast read and exactly what I was in the mood for. Rebecca’s writing never fails to impress me and I love the high school setting she created. It made me so nostalgic for my own younger years. I loved this take on best friend’s ex - said best friend is Claire from book 1 and she’s happily dating Austin so no jealous girls in this one! They both put a lot of pressure on themselves to success, Vaughn with soccer and Lacey with getting into a good school. But they were also just enjoying the fun of being teenagers, staying out partying and hanging out with friends. The bucket list was a really good storyline to bring them closer together and allow them to explore the spark between them. I also really liked the dynamic that the author brought with both of the characters being raised by their dads, with the mums not so much in the picture.
Highly recommend this book and the series if you’re looking for a high school YA romance!
First off I want to thank NetGalley, Bloom books, and Rebecca Jenshak for an ARC of this! It was so heartwarming and heartfelt. I felt like such a giddy high schooler reading this.
There’s just something about the team captain and tutor trope. I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did. I honestly forgot about all the high school stress until I read this. Vaughn is the soccer team captain who needs help with passing Algebra II. Lacey is the peppy, top of the class, captain of the cheer team girl. Both Lacey and Vaughn run in the same crowd but Lacey doesn’t seem to like Vaughn since he is her best friend’s ex. But Vaughn is desperate to pass Algebra II even if it means he has to beg Lacey for her help.
I really like reading about Lacey and Vaughn. I thought they were so cute together. It felt so refreshing to see their interactions. I loved how open they were to each other. They said exactly how they felt and laid all their cards on the line. They both just understood each other. I can see why everyone thought they worked well together. And let’s not forget the other friends in the group. I love a friend group that support one another and want everyone to be happy.
One of my favorite scenes between Lacey and Vaughn was when they took a ride to go apple picking in someone’s yard. I thought it was so cute how he picked her up to reach for the apples and she made him store them in his clothes. I liked that he wanted to be able to help her by crossing things off her bucket list.
This was so heartfelt. It truly felt like such a cozy read.
Playing with Forever was such a sweet YA book that is so fitting for those high school dreamers. It was so inspiring and gave us that sliver of hope that young love can happen and actually last.
Lacey Kerr has more to her than just being a typical 17 year old cheerleader. She’s super smart, beautiful, a loyal friend, and one of the hardest workers. She seems to be able to do it all-Balancing cheering, her school work, and her relationships very well while always having the biggest smile on her face. The star soccer player, Vaughn Collins, is probably the only thing Lacey isn’t a fan of. He broke her best friend’s heart and is completely opposite of Lacey. She’s all smiles and fun, and he’s just…..not.
Vaughn needs help passing math in order to stay on the soccer team, and his only hope is of course, Lacey. So after some convincing, Lacey puts her differences aside and agrees to help him. As opposite as they are, they work really well together and became more than just friends. Vaughn changes a little the more and more he’s around Lacey. He notices he’s actually a lot happier than he’s ever been, his grades are getting better, and he sees there’s more to life than just soccer.
With a few bumps along the way, you’ll see the growth in both Lacey and Vaughn, and how they handle everything that’s thrown to them.
One of my favorite parts of this book is the bucket list Lacey is trying to complete, and how Vaughn is pretty much her sidekick in checking everything off of her list.
